Both Huddersfield Partnership and Huddersfield Police are praising intelligence software in the fight against crime in the town centre. In early 2015 Huddersfield Partnership is teamed up with Huddersfield Police Station to launch intelligence software DISC (Database and Intranet for Safer Communities) to help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the town centre particularly theft from businesses. The software aims is to further support crime prevention efforts by providing retailers, businesses, pubs and clubs with information about criminal activity in the town. It provides information to businesses in the town centre in real time. Members can view galleries of individuals and receive alerts concerning individuals who are wanted or have been sentenced due to crimes they have committed. The software comes in the form of an intranet but alerts and notifications can be sent straight to a mobile device if it has email access. The system can also be used to report incidents. Karen Hobson, Partnership Manager says, ?We have seen real benefits to the use of this software and it has been instrumental in helping the police apprehend a number of individuals. We now want to give businesses a free trial, in order that local businesses can see how much of a great tool it is. For the whole month of March 2016, local businesses can access the software for FREE. Usually, to access the DISC software, businesses need to become a member of Huddersfield Partnership. Membership is as little as £96 per year dependent upon the size of the business. Karen added ?There are many benefits to becoming a member of the Partnership, accessing the DISC software is just one of them? however, to showcase the DISC software, we felt offering a free trial would be a fantastic thing to do. Sgt Mandy Mellor, who is assigned to preside over the town centre, commented, 'DISC has been a fantastic tool for the Police to update shops/stores on the prolific shoplifters, persistent beggars, persons wanted, arrested, court results, prison releases etc. It is great that we have other people who know the persistent offenders, and can be the eyes and ears for the Police, notifying us of persons that are wanted etc. The intelligence is updated on a daily basis so the information is very up to date. Before DISC, shops/stores were only kept up to date on a monthly basis at the meetings. When staff cannot attend the crime retail meetings, the briefing is uploaded onto the software so stores/shops do not miss out and can obtain the information/intelligence immediately. HUDDERSFIELD IT FIRM JOIN GOVERNMENT LED SECURITY PROGRAMME Huddersf ield based IT support provider, P2 Technologies, has joined the Yorkshire Cyber Security Cluster, a government led organisat ion developed to highl ight the importance of cyber security within businesses.

The Yorkshire Cyber Security Cluster is an init iative which helps regional businesses within the Information Security f ield to work collaboratively to build and increase information security knowledge. It provides a networking platform to share ideas and best practice, and subsequently enables organisations to deliver high value contracts.

The YCSC has been formed under the umbrella of the UK Cyber Security Forum, an organisation that represents small companies who are actively working in cyber security across the UK.

P2?s trusted employees work with its clients to continually improve their business IT, forward plan and deliver robust IT strategies to deliver the best results. Part of P2?s commitment to clients is to ensure they are protected from cyber security threats including malware and viruses, which continue to be a global issue.

In fact, cyber-crime is a growing threat and can affect businesses of all sizes. For example Booking.com was hacked and 10,000 email addresses were leaked, TalkTalk also had their data breached which cost the company £35 mill ion.

Hackers are making more direct attempts to extort companies by using social engineering to coerce people into circumventing security systems. The number of attempts has also increased signif icantly as criminals seek to capitalise.

It is because of this change of landscape that P2 is taking proactive action to advise and update customers on the increased risk. Each month, P2 join the exclusive group of thought leaders from the IT industry to form the YCSC. These meetings allow the group to generate ideas on protecting businesses IT and implement new ideas and processes for organisations based within the Yorkshire region.

Roger Pearson, Director at P2 Technologies, commented on the partnership; ?Security in business IT is a massive consideration for f irms and needs to be constantly monitored, managed and improved. The YCSC works towards highlighting IT risks and reducing them with practical and successful solutions. Joining the exclusive group positions P2 as the only Huddersf ield IT f irm that can implement the new security processes the YCSC develop, therefore benefitt ing our clients massively.?

A BUSINESS WORKSHOP YOU WON?T WANT TO MISS!

Welcome to the February edit ion of member of the month . This month, we are pleased to int roduce you to Hardev Kaur commercial special ist f rom Wilkinson Woodward Norcl i f fe Sol icitors

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Please give a brief descript ion of your organisat ion: Wilkinson Woodward Norclif fe and Co - trusted legal expertise since 1886

1. Why did your organisat ion join the partnership? As an established and trusted name in Huddersf ield, we felt it was important to support the work of the Partnership in promoting and bringing together Huddersf ield?s business community.

2. What are your aspirat ions for 2016? I have lived in Huddersf ield for numerous years and I am already familiar with many businesses in the area. Now that I am also working in Huddersf ield, I look forward to meeting more local businesses and becoming a valuable advisor to the local business community. children?s development within the Arts

3. Give three words to describe your organisat ion? Trusted, friendly experts

4. Give us three words about yoursel f? Approachable, reliable, hard-working

5. What do you think are the main chal lenges for the legal profession? In recent years traditional law f irms have faced f ierce competit ion from other legal service providers. Wilkinson Woodward is pleased to continually offer a high level of expertise, a personal service and local knowledge.

Other challenges are the threat to legal aid and new legislation and regulation - l imitations on legal aid have also made it dif f icult for some individuals to access justice. Thankfully, legal aid is stil l available for some legal services. On a local level, the Legal Advice Clinic at the University of Huddersf ield plays a vital role in providing access to legal services aimed at those who are unable to afford the cost of obtaining legal advice. We are very pleased and proud to support the work of the University?s Legal Clinic.

As a result of new legislation and regulation there have been huge increases in Court and Tribunal fees which have signif icantly impacted on the volumes of legal work in certain areas as well as access to justice for individuals wishing to make claims in those areas.

6. What has been your proudest achievement within your career history to date? The day I qualif ied as a solicitor in 2006 because this was the culmination of

many years hard work. It was also the point at which I started working directly with businesses and handling their legal needs

7. What are your goals in the next f ive years? To build more relationships with local businesses and have a positive impact on Huddersf ield?s business community. Acquiring and disposing of commercial property can be a complex and technical process - being able to guide business owners through this process is a rewarding experience as it can have a hugely positive impact on their operation. I hope to help many Huddersf ield businesses in this way over the coming years.

8. If you could pass on one single piece of advice to a budding lawyer, what would it be? Work hard every day. Never stop trying ? even when you think you have ?made it? and make the most of every opportunity to serve your clients well.

9. If you could change something about Huddersf ield what would it be? I would like to see Huddersf ield attracting more young professionals and to see empty businesses premises f il led.

10. If you could give the Partnership some advice what would it be? Continue to work hard at raising the prof ile of both the Partnership and the town?s businesses so that it becomes a valued part of Huddersf ield?s business network

Over the past couple of months, Kirklees have invited people to register their views about the draf t Local Plan. Thank you to al l of you who took the t ime to have your say ? whatever your views.

The Local Plan will shape Huddersf ield?s future in terms of economic and social growth over the next 20 years, so it?s really important that everyone had the opportunity to comment on how they want our town to evolve.

In particular, we?d particularly l ike to thank all those people who supported our plans for Farnley Country Park and the benefits it could bring to Huddersf ield and the wider Kirklees area.

We set out a vision for a country park that could be something signif icant for Huddersf ield. If ? and only if ? other landowners wished to join in and partner with us, there would be the opportunity to link existing footpaths to create a large circular route. We have not, as has been suggested, applied for planning permission or planned to build infrastructure on land belonging to anyone else.

It has become apparent that the majority of neighbouring landowners do not wish to participate in Farnley Country Park. That means our plans to create a country park for Huddersf ield, will go ahead on our 1,500 acres of land.

Despite reports, very few public footpaths cross our land. At the moment, none of these paths are suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs, which is something we?d like to address through Farnley Country Park. There are no areas for cyclists and only two, short bridleways. Through Farnley Country Park we can open up more of our land to more people for more leisure, health and educational activit ies.

Any funding that is generated will go towards providing such facilit ies on our land that will encourage people to visit the Park. Farming will continue on the Estate, as will the conservation work that we currently undertake as members of Natural England?s Higher Level Stewardship scheme.

The decision as to what happens next is in the hands of Kirklees Metropolitan Council. However, our stance remains the same as it has been all along:

If Kirklees have to build on green belt, then get a country park out of it!

THANK YOU FOR HAVING YOUR SAY

As the clean up af ter Storms Desmond, Eva and Frank cont inues, we have developed an early warning system that wil l alert customers that an except ional f lood event may be about to occur.

Identifying customers that are in f lood risk areas, together with using online data sources P2 have integrated f lood alert warnings in to their remote monitoring platform. P2's helpdesk have in depth knowledge of each customer system, the potential impact to their productivity and have updated procedures of managing the contact to proactively advise on best course of action.

Many companies rely upon insurance as their current risk procedure, when in fact; they should question how their intangible assets such as productivity and customer service are protected. Most businesses rely on a trusted IT partner to manage the recovery process, however most companies are unaware of the time to recover systems even when they have an adequate backup in place.

As these extreme weather events become more common and other signif icant negative events on business such as cyber-attacks and equipment failure, there is an ever increasing need to have in place both a disaster recovery plan and systems that ensure business continuity. Disaster recovery planning is a documented process detailing the steps required to recover the IT systems back to a state of operation.

Disaster recovery planning requires a detailed review of identifying the IT services required for business operations and the recovery time required to get those systems back in place. A disaster recovery plan will then define the IT systems required for business continuity such as cloud IT systems or cloud backup to real t ime replication of server systems across two physical locations or more.

For more information on disaster recovery planning and business continuity, call P2 today on 01484 779020.
