Introduction Dear Fellow Entrepreneur, CONGRATULATIONS on investing in yourself and your business by purchasing this “Step-by-Step” module on How to Set Up an Autoresponder in 1ShoppingCart! The audio that comes with this Module is from a webinar I did on the same topic and also includes Setting Up Broadcasts (a bonus for you!). Autoresponders are one of the absolute best ways to ensure that you provide great customer service while leveraging your time and energy. Once you understand the power of an autoresponder, you’ll wonder how you ever functioned without it – and you’ll certainly realize how much more you can now do, by working just once and letting it work for you again and again. There are many different systems which allow you to send autoresponders. This Module is focused only on sending autoresponders through the 1ShoppingCart platform. Come, let’s get leveraged. . . Dedicated To Your Extraordinary Success,

SECTION 1: An Overview of Autoresponders

Do you remember, years ago, when you would send someone an email message

and you’d get back this icky little message which indicated that there was an

error and your message couldn’t be delivered for whatever reason?

THAT “icky” message was the first of what we know as autoresponders.

Another autoresponder that we know so well is when sending someone an email

and one automatically comes back stating that “Jane” is on vacation and will

respond to your email when she returns.

Autoresponders allow you to create email messages and follow-up at preset

intervals with the recipients.

Notice that I didn’t say “preset DATES” here…autoresponders are scheduled

based on the number of days after the date the person first signed up. We’ll

cover that more in a bit.

Autoresponders have come A LONG WAY! Here are just a few things that you

can now easily do using autoresponders:

Create a free giveaway on your website and send it out as a multi-step e-

course

Follow-up with clients after they’ve purchased a product – you can

schedule emails to go out for an unlimited period of time!

Send out a multi-step audio seminar

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 5

Automatically send out reminders and notices to members of a group

coaching program

Send out confirmation details when someone signs up for your

teleseminars

Send out an “evergreen” newsletter to your prospects

How nice is it that you can write something just ONE time and have it

automatically go out again and again and again with no further action from you.

WHEW! And online marketing was supposed to be hard! ☺

Before we move on, I want to mention here that many people successfully use

systems such as Constant Contact (www.ConstantContact.com) to send out their

newsletters. That is a great system, but it is NOT an autoresponder – with

Constant Contact, YOU have to initiate the sending of information, not the

prospect.

Now that you have an idea of the types of things autoresponders CAN do, let’s

look at HOW to do them.

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 6

SECTION 2: Creating an Autoresponder

If you do not yet have an account on the 1ShoppingCart platform, please sign up

for one now at www.SandraCart.com – if you have an account with any of the

systems which run 1ShoppingCart, you’re all set.

Here are a few systems which run 1ShoppingCart:

www.SandraCart.com

Kickstart Cart

Practice Pay Solutions

Professional Cart Solutions

2Checkout

1ShoppingCart

There are a host of others as well.

Once you have your account information, go ahead and login to your shopping

cart.

After logging in, please go to the “Email & Marketing” tab and select

“Autoresponders” and then “Create an Autoresponder”.

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 7

Once you’ve completed all the steps, you’ll see the following:

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 8

This is what I call the “front screen” of an autoresponder. We’re going to fill this

in and then take a break and work on the content of our autoresponder.

1. What do you wish to name the autoresponder? This is a name that is

seen only by you.

a. For our purposes, let’s call the autoresponder “Autoresponder

Test”.

2. Do you wish for the autoresponder to be “Direct Subscribe Enabled”?

a. If you wish for someone to be able to click a URL link and be

automatically subscribed to this autoresponder, you’ll want to

choose the “YES” option.

b. If you want clients and prospects to have to fill out a form or

make a specific purchase in order to be on this autoresponder

list, you’ll want to choose the “NO” option.

c. For our purposes, let’s choose “YES”.

3. “Unsubscribe Autoresponder” – when someone is signed up for THIS

autoresponder, do you want them to be automatically unsubscribed from

another?

a. This works great when you have an autoresponder for a section

of your list who MAY be interested in purchasing Product X

(they are prospects). Once they DO purchase Product X, you

will want them to be unsubscribed from the “prospect

autoresponder” as they are now receiving the “client

autoresponder”.

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 9

b. For our purposes, we’ll leave this blank.

4. “From email address” – who do you want the autoresponder to be from

(note that if people wish to send a note back, it will go to this address).

a. For our purposes, let’s use [email protected].

5. “From name” – what is the name that you want the autoresponder to come

from?

a. For our purposes, let’s use “Sandra Martini, the Automatic

Business Coach”.

6. “Shareable” – setting this to YES will allow you to import (or inherit) this

autoresponder series into another account using the “Inherit

Autoresponder” link at the top of the page.

a. For our purposes, this will be set to “No”.

7. “Opt-in Verification Message” – If you have “opt-in verification” turned on

within your account (meaning double opt-in), you have the ability to

choose a different confirmation email for each of your autoresponders.

Simply choose the message you would like to send out for your new

autoresponder sign-ups from the drop-down box; you can view the

message in a pop-up by clicking on the link to the right of the drop-down

box.

If you do not have opt-in verification turned on, you can skip this step.

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 10

8. Click SAVE and the system will automatically bring you to your first blank

message.

When all is said and done, our page should look like this:

This is where we actually type our first autoresponder message.

We’re going to take a break from the system and talk about WHAT the

autoresponder will say.

Since you’ve saved your autoresponder, you may now exit from your shopping

cart (it will be there when we go back). ☺

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 11

SECTION 3: Planning Your Autoresponder Series

I wanted to give you a taste of how simple setting up your autoresponder in the

system will be.

Now that you’ve had that, it’s time for the *tough* part – actually writing your

autoresponder series.

For purposes of this Module, let’s assume we want to have an audio series go

out as follows:

Day 0 (the day someone signs up for the autoresponder or the day they

purchased something): Audio Message 1

Day 2 (2 days after they signed up): Audio Message 2

Day 4 (4 days after they originally signed up or purchased): Audio

Message 3

Day 6 (6 days after they originally signed up or purchased): Audio

Message 4

Day 8 (8 days after they originally signed up or purchased): Audio

Message 5

Remember earlier I mentioned that autoresponders are not “date” driven, they

are “day” driven? The above shows you exactly what that means: you can not

“tell” an autoresponder to go out on a certain day and time – the timing is

different for every person, depending on when she signed up for a particular

autoresponder.

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 12

Great, now that we know the timing of our autoresponder series, we need to write

the content.

Upon sign-up, we want to thank our prospect for signing up to receive this free

audio mini-series and tell them a little bit about what we’ll be sending them.

Here’s a simple and effective way to do that:

Hi %$Firstname$%, Thank you for signing up! I'm delighted you could join me for my simple step-by-step, "5 Quick and Easy Steps to Put Your Marketing on Autopilot" audio mini-workshop and e-course. Ready to get started? Here's the link to Tip 1 where I'll coach you on: "How to stand out from the crowd". http://www.SandraMartini.com/audio-step1.html (Listening time - just over 2 minutes) Oh...and turn your speakers up! Here's what's coming up next: => Tip 2: What's the most overlooked way to reinforce what you do - with no extra effort => Tip 3: How to become an instant expert => Tip 4: How to make your clients WANT to refer you again and again => Tip 5: How to make your work do double and triple duty in 5 minutes a day Enjoy! Sandra Martini The Automatic Business Coach P.S. I recommend implementing or scheduling each step right

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 13

after you hear it. This way, by the time this mini-course is over, you'll have made visible, tangible progress towards your goal of an automatic business which gives you more f'ree time AND more mo'ney!

Let’s dissect what we see above:

1. The “funky” spelling of the word “FIRSTNAME” after the word “Hi” is the

shopping cart’s way of inserting the person’s real first name (based on

how they signed up). So it would state “Hi Jane,”.

2. You’ll notice that I indicate how long the audio is. It’s done as a

convenience – after all, we’re all busy and will want to know if it’s 2

minutes or 20.

3. We give them a “taste” of what’s coming up by listing the coming steps.

This reminds them that more tips are coming and builds curiosity about

the actual tips themselves.

4. We purposefully misspelled “money” and “free” – this is to avoid

computers tagging this message as spam.

5. We’re missing our full “email signature” (name, contact info, how to

unsubscribe) in what you see above. This information is automatically

added by the shopping cart to every email you send out so there’s no

need to duplicate it here.

The rest of the autoresponder series is listed in Appendix A if you wish to review

it.

What will your first autoresponder be?

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 14

Will it be a series like the one above or a single autoresponder with a link to a

special report or recipe series or template you’ve developed?

Outline the concept and the timing of your first autoresponder below:

You’re doing GREAT!

Writing the content for your autoresponder is always the tricky part – you want to

share so much information with your prospects and clients without overwhelming

them.

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 15

An important thing to remember is that you don’t have to share EVERYTHING

you know with them – they’re not going to be ready in this first autoresponder.

Here are a few tips for creating great autoresponder content:

1. Everything you learned in high school and college English is out the

window.

2. Personalize wherever you can (use the FIRSTNAME and other functions

within the shopping cart).

3. Keep it conversational. This is not a formal, legal notice – you want to

write like you speak. Pretend you’re sitting across the table from your

prospect enjoying a cup of sun-brewed tea.

4. Along with #3, keep it personal and write as if you’re writing to ONE

person, not a mailing list of thousands. The goal of all your

autoresponders is to connect with your readers.

5. Whenever writing emails, text, websites, autoresponders – anything that’s

viewed on a computer screen – remember to keep your sentences and

paragraphs short (no more than 4 or 5 lines).

6. Keep your writing simple – eliminate excess words.

7. Keep your writing clear and straightforward – don’t use industry jargon and

keep your writing clear enough so that a 6th grader can understand it.

Print out these tips and keep them near where you write until they become

second-nature. ☺

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 16

SECTION 4: Adding Content

Go ahead and log back into the shopping cart.

This time, we’re going to go to “Email & Marketing”/”Autoresponders”/”Manage

Autoresponders” since we’ve already created our base form.

You’re screen will look similar to the below, but may have only one

autoresponder (our “Autoresponder Test”) in it:

Click on “Edit” to the far right of the autoresponder name and you’ll be taken to

the screen we were on earlier with a few differences.

Notice that the “Autoresponder ID” field is now populated with a number. This is

a unique identification number assigned by the shopping cart in order to identify

this autoresponder (you don’t need to know the number – it’s internal to the

shopping cart).

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 17

The most new item on this page for us right now is that we can now click on

“New Message”.

Once you click on “New Message”, you’ll be taken to a screen where we can

start typing in our content:

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 18

This should look familiar from where we ended at the end of the last Section.

Let’s run down the fields so you have an understanding of what they all are:

1. Go To Message -- You will not select anything from this box. This option

is used for navigating from one message to another within the

autoresponder series. It’s a shortcut that makes it easier to edit different

messages in the series and since this is our first message, there are no

other options.

2. Days Delay -- The number of days delay you set for any message in the

series will always be the number of days from the date the subscriber first

signed up to this series (or purchased a product which has this

autoresponder).

3. Message Type -- Here you can choose the format of your autoresponder

message. You can use either HTML or Text email formats. HTML

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 19

formatting works great for newsletter type messages where you want to

add pictures and color to the email, while text works best when trying to

send a more personalized message and all that is needed is plain text.

4. Alternate Destination -- This field will typically be left empty. If you enter an

email address in this Field, our system will redirect the message to the

“Alternate Destination” email address instead of it being sent to the

subscriber.

5. Subject Line -- This will be the subject line of your email and what your

prospect sees in her inbox. This is a great place to add a person’s first

name (using the code on the right hand side) so it grabs their attention

when the email message comes in to their inbox.

a. A good subject line for us to use here is “Here's the audio series

you requested %$firstname$%”

b. Take some time to play around with those codes on the right

hand side – they can fill any of that personalized information in

for your prospects and clients AS LONG as the system contains

the info: If Jane didn’t give you her state and you want to use

“state”, her autoresponder will contain a space where the state

name should be.

6. Message Body -- This is where you type the email message. You can

enter your text into this area or paste HTML code to create an HTML

formatted message. Remember that you do NOT need to add your

contact info to the bottom as the shopping cart will automatically do that

for you.

Once we enter in the information from the last section, we see:

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 20

Once input, scroll to the bottom (you’ll scroll right by what the shopping cart

considers to be your email signature and what will be automatically appended to

the end of every email.

If you don’t like this signature, click on the “Contact Profile” link to be taken to a

place where you can change it.

Once you reach the bottom of the screen, click “Save Changes”.

You will stay on the same screen and now have the ability to click “New

Message” at the top if you are ready to put another message into this

autoresponder.

CONGRATULATIONS! You’ve just created your first autoresponder! Now let’s

get people to sign up to it!

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 21

SECTION 5: Getting Sign Ups

Now that your autoresponder series is built, how will you tell people about it so

they know to sign up?

There are several ways people can get onto your autoresponder:

They purchase a product and you set up the product so they automatically

receive a specific autoresponder. This is under the “Products/Add

Products” section of your shopping cart.

They click a link in your email or newsletter which generates an email to

the shopping cart and signs them up for the autoresponder when they hit

“Send”. (This is the “direct subscribe” address mentioned below.)

They fill out a form you’ve created which automatically signs them up for

your autoresponder when they hit “Submit” or “Subscribe”. You can set

these up under “Email & Marketing/Custom Forms/Create Form”. The

system has also created form links for you and you can access them

under the “Opt-in Forms” section of the “Custom Forms” menu.

If you are not comfortable with html coding, you may want your virtual

assistant or webmaster to walk you through creating forms the first time

you do it.

They send an email to your “direct subscribe” address and are

automatically signed up. This email address is listed in the “edit” screen of

the autoresponder.

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 22

You can also manually add someone to an autoresponder – this is not

encouraged as you want to ensure they KNOW they’re getting it and that

they WANT to receive it.

You now have all the tools you need to create autoresponders and start using

them in your marketing and client follow-up!

Congratulations on a job fabulously done!

This autoresponder series is a set of lessons sent to prospects when they register for a free e-course/audio mini-series from www.SandraMartini.com. Please note that as the prospects usually receive AUDIO tips, I’ve transcribed the tips and placed them at the end of each autoresponder. I’m delighted you decided to join me. Every 2 days, you’ll receive a quick and easy tip with an action request. If you’re like most self-employed people, you market yourself when you have time, when you think of it, or only when a specific opportunity comes along. This inconsistent marketing typically results in inconsistent clients. Throughout this audio & e-course, I’ll show you how marketing can be easy, automatic and, most importantly, authentic to who you are as a person. Here’s your first tip: “How to stand out from the crowd”.

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 26

In this day of technology, the personal touch is often forgotten in business. As a society, we cringe when yet another recording “answers” the phone or we receive yet another email. Think about how much it means when you receive something in the mail – delivered by a real, live person to your mailbox – and the letter or card isn’t asking you to do, or spend, anything. It’s a simple “thank you” for being a client or a “checking in” or perhaps a f’ree gift. You feel special and that business stands out in your mind. I “touch” my clients at least once a month this way. I have one of those huge year-at-a-glance calendars with my marketing campaigns scheduled. I’ve made this process automatic by putting everything on the calendar, explaining the steps and having my direct mail assistant (who is also my mom) take care of it. And now I even pay her. If you’re just starting out, I encourage you to enlist your children or parents to help with this task so you can focus on other things. You’ll be surprised what a trip to the local ice cream store or a nice dinner out will get you. Here’s the action I’m asking you to take: Identify how you can touch your clients, other than via email or an ezine, at least once each month AND how you can make the process automatic. In the next tip, I’ll share the most overlooked way to reinforce what you do in your business – automatically and with no extra effort so be sure to look for my email and turn up your speakers when you see it. A few days ago we talked about how technology has taken a lot of the personal touch out of interacting with our clients. Today, we’re going to use technology to our advantage. The most overlooked way to reinforce what you do – with no extra effort involves the use of a well-crafted email signature. Do you simply sign your emails and click “SEND” or do you use that valuable real estate on the bottom of the email to reinforce the results you get your clients? Notice I said “the results you get your clients” rather than “what you do”. That’s because, no one cares what you do. It’s true, they don’t. People do, however care about what you can do FOR THEM. EVERY email you send (even the ones to Aunt Thelma) should include a 5-line or less results-driven description of what you can do for your clients with a call to action to get them to do SOMETHING (usually visit your website to sign up for your ezine): Here’s one of mine (yes…I have more than one as I like to mix them up a bit to keep people reading): Sandra Martini, the Automatic Business Coach, and award-winning author teaches small business owners and entrepreneurs how to implement processes and systems designed to take them out of the day-to-day running of their business. Here’s your third tip of 5 Quick and Easy Ways To Put Your Marketing On Autopilot: “How to become an instant expert”.

©2008 Sandra P. Martini, All Rights Reserved. www.SandraMartini.com 30

There are several ways you can become an expert in your field. By far the quickest way is speaking. Whether you speak at events, give talks for your local Rotary Club or Chamber of Commerce, host teleseminars or are a guest on other people’s calls, speaking will get you the most notoriety in the least amount of time. By having a “signature speech” – a speech that you are known for, you can easily give the same basic talk to different organizations. The benefit, of course, is that the more you give your signature speech, the more comfortable you are and the more naturally it comes to you. Not comfortable speaking in front of people? I advise you to do two things: 1/ get comfortable or at least learn how to do it without breaking out in sweat and 2/ start writing. If you start writing articles about your industry or success tips for your clients, you will become known as an expert. The process will be slower than if you speak, but it will happen. Tip 5 will share ways you can take those articles and do SO MANY more things with them – things which further build your expert status while making you money. Here’s the action I’m asking you to take: Even if you are not yet comfortable with speaking, I am challenging you to write your signature speech and “give it” to your spouse, partner, friends, children or pile of stuffed animals. Then (okay, two actions today), write at least 3 articles or success tips from the information in your signature speech. In the next tip, I’ll how you how to make your clients want to refer you again and again so be sure to look for my email and turn up your speakers when you see it. Here’s your fourth tip of 5 Quick and Easy Ways To Put Your Marketing On Autopilot: “How to make your clients want to refer you again and again”. The simplest way to make your clients want to refer you again and again is to ASK them to do it and then reward them for doing it. For example, if you sell information products as I do, you should have an affiliate program so those who have purchased your products can refer others and make a commission from it.

These are sales that you may not have had otherwise and it’s worth giving a percent to the referrer as a “thank you” – you are essentially creating a sales force which you pay only for actual sales. If you offer services, you should offer a free hour or a free service for every new client who is referred to you and commits to a certain level of service. If you are a virtual assistant, this could be 5 hours each month. It’s important that the reward be tied to an actual sale. You only want to pay out when you have received something in. Remember that no matter your reward system, clients will only refer you if they love your products and services. You want them willing to do it WITHOUT the reward, but having a reward makes it a no brainer. Here’s the action I’m asking you to take: Look at how you serve your clients (via products or services) and create a plan to reward them for referring you to others. In the next tip, I’ll how you how to work once and benefit again and again so be sure to look for my email and turn up your speakers when you see it. Here’s your last strategy for 5 Quick and Easy Ways To Put Your Marketing On Autopilot: “How to make your work do double and triple duty in 5 minutes a day”. The best way to leverage your time and energy is to repurpose everything you do. If you write an article for your newsletter, you should take that same article and post it on article submission sites such as EzineArticles.com. There are thousands of these websites. If you select 5 of the most popular, you can post your article to one site each day – in about 5 minutes. Doing so will drive visitors to your website to learn more about you and what you can offer them. Are you concerned you can’t post articles to article submission sites because you don’t yet have a newsletter or ezine? Don’t worry. You can still write the articles and post them while you work on getting your newsletter done. In strategy 3, you learned that speaking is the quickest way to establish yourself as an expert. That remains true. Submitting articles is the second best way to get recognized as an expert.

Here’s the action I’m asking you to take: Write one article in the next week – remember an “article” can be a listing of tips with a one sentence introduction and closing – and post it to Ezine Articles at www.EzineArticles.com. If you can’t write an article yourself, hire someone from Elance.com to do it for you. Thank you for joining me these last several days. Dedicated to your extraordinary success, Sandra
