IC3 Internet and Computer Core Certification Preparation

Introduction to Computers ITSC1001

The Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3) program is the world’s first validated, standards-based training and certification program for basic computing and Internet knowledge and skills. Successful completion of IC3 ensures you have the knowledge and skills required for basic use of computer hardware, software, networks, and the Internet. It provides you with practical fundamental knowledge of personal computers, including how computers and home/workplace networks work, operating systems, basic understanding of word processing, spreadsheets, Internet applications, e-mail, communications and integration. This is a 76-hour certification preparation course, geared to prepare students for all three parts of the Internet and Computer Core Certifications: Computing Fundamentals, Key Applications, and Living Online

COURSE OBJECTIVE: This is a certification preparation course, geared to prepare students for all three parts of the Internet and Computer Core Certifications: Computing Fundamentals, Key Applications, and Living Online. The course includes pre-assessment, classroom instruction, e-learning support and computer based applications. Certification testing is offered at HCCS-Authorized Testing Center or any Certiport-ATC.

GOALS/LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

• Understand computing fundamentals • Understand basic computer concepts • Understand Windows XP • Use Microsoft Office • Understand the basics of networking and the Internet

STUDENT EVALUATION: The student will demonstrate mastery of these objectives by successful classroom and as observed by the instructor and certification exam results. A computerized pre-assessment and post-assessment will be used to assess participants.

• Identify different types of computers, how computers work (process information) and how individual computers fit into larger systems

• Identify the function of computer hardware components and common problems associated with individual components

• Identify issues relating to computer performance and how it is affected by different components of the computer

• Identify the factors that go into a decision on how to purchase a computer or select a computer for work, school, or home

• Identify how software works and how software and hardware work together to perform computing tasks

• Identify different types of software, the tasks for which each type of software is most suited, and the popular programs in each software category

• Be able to start and exit a Windows application and utilize sources of online help • Identify common on-screen elements of Windows applications, change application

settings, and manage files within an application • Perform common editing (cut, copy, paste, spell check, etc.), formatting (fonts, margins,

tabs, etc.) and printing functions • Identify network fundamentals and the benefits and risks of network computing • Identify the relationship between computer networks, other communications networks

(like the telephone network) and the Internet • Identify how electronic mail works • Identify how to use an electronic mail application • Identify the appropriate use of e-mail and e-mail related "netiquette • Identify how computers are used in different areas of work, school, and home • Identify the risks of using computer hardware and software • Identify how to use the Internet safely and legally

REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE: To receive a Certificate of Completion, students must meet the following requirements:

• Attend at least 80% of scheduled class time • Complete the course assignments and training project demonstrating 80% mastery of

course concepts to instructor.

PREREQUISITE: N/A. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: IC3 BASICS, Thompson COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS This is a 76-hour instructor lead and e-learning blended learning course, in which class participation will be expected. courses are discussed in the didactic portion of the course. Other learning opportunities are explored by discovering the students' interest and explaining the various disciplines offered at HCCS.

♦ Opportunities for supplemental Instruction - Students are informed of various books,

publications, videos, and software found in the HCCS library which relates to the field of study. Outside assignments are given to enhance learning.

♦ Speaker Forum - Speakers from the Industry sectors are invited to share information on

opportunities in employment and technical support.
