Travel Marketing and Sales Course No. 8169 Elective 36 weeks - 3 credits Prerequisite: Recommendation of Counselor Previous Courses in Marketing and Family and Consumer Sciences Preferred
This course prepares students for entry-level positions in the hotel and catering world. This course is designed to do the following:
• Prepare students for jobs in various hotels, restaurants and other hotel and catering related institutions
• Goal is to serve others in a professional manner • Learn on a daily basis fundamentals of operating and running a
hotel • Learn to run a restaurant and catering company • Participate in a simulated hotel and restaurant • Cooking demonstrations • Plan various food tastings • Plan and cater breakfast, lunch
and dinner for various school functions
• Explore careers in the fields of hotel, catering and tourism
• Participate in DECA activities Emphasize occupational skills
for workers in the hotel and catering field
• Plan mock conferences, expos, meetings, cooking shows and other events
• Have hands-on catering training at hotels, restaurants, and other related venues
• Plan various food tastings • Cooking demonstrations • Approve internships in hotel and catering settings • Plan and cater breakfast, lunch and dinner for various school
functions • Personal growth and skill development opportunities are
provided through DECA

Salaries vary according to education level, however one can still advance in this industry with little or no college. Hard work and perseverance are a must in order to advance. Starting salaries for entry-level positions average around $27,000 and up! Hotel manager salary ranges start at $100,000 and up! Areas of employment include: hotels, restaurants, resorts, travel agencies, cruise ships, casinos, and travel and tourism organizations, entrepreneurship.
Students in Hotel & Catering are expected to take the National
Professional Certification in Customer Service Test.
