June 2, 2009.Emergency retraction of the CD-8 Drill Rig to transit position in case of hydraulic failure. The CD-8 was designed to raise the mast vertically off the ground so the vehicle can be driven away. DND requested that the CD-8 also had to be returned horizontally within the truck envelope for transit.

August 19, 2009.In the unlikely event of hydraulic failure a cable puller is now supplied with each CD-8 Drill Rig. Action item closed August 21, 2009.

August 2009.It was requested that a warning decal be provided with safety instructions in case the emergency retraction of the CD-8 Drill Rig was necessary.

A bilingual warning decal with safety instructions is now installed on all CD-8 Drill Rigs. Action Item closed September 15, 2009.

August 2009.There was concern that the mast hose could be damaged by catching onto a foreign object during vehicle transit.

Provide high quality velcro straps which wrap the hose during vehicle transit and is easily removed during drilling operations. Action item closed September 11, 2009.

March 31, 2010.During the CD-8 Drill Rig demonstration DND requested that the hose reel tension be increased.

Since the hose reels are adjustable they will all have their tension increased. Action Item closed April 20, 2010.

April 2, 2010.DND requested that the CD-8 Drill Rig be modified to increase the operating time of their hydraulic tools. June 21, 2010.Tests were conducted to measure back pressure and temperature when the hose reel was engaged.

July 30, 2010.Component changes were made and the hose reel was tested once again. The back pressure and temperature was measured to be acceptable. Action item closed August 5, 2010.

Lessons Learned

More thorough integration of DND staff in the design process would have been beneficial.

More thorough discussions of operational functions from COTS to MilCOTS system would have been beneficial.

Cooperating with Navistar was absolutely necessary to work with a large customer like DND. They provided solid engineering and management advice necessary for a project of this size to unfold.

The assistance that Navistar and DEW Engineering provided was very helpful in resolving issues.
