20 21 IT WAS THE DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING, Nov. 25, 2005. The previous year had turned out to be a historical one for Keane––their debut album, Hopes and Fears, reached the top the UK Albums Chart upon release and went on to become the best-selling British album of the year. Eighteen months of world touring later, we caught up with Tom, Tim and Richard for this photo shoot, which took place in their studio in England. They were in the process of recording their second studio album, Under the Iron Sea, with their vintage Yamaha CP70B piano, S90 keyboard and Absolute Maple Nouveau Custom drum kit. It was a blistery cold day, but the band was more than amenable, even agreeing to take several photos outside in a converted green room (seen here in theTable of Contents). Under the Iron Sea would turn out to have a much darker undertone than their debut album, hinting at hurt and frustration from the band members. The album reached the top of the charts, and the first single "Is It Any Wonder," would go on to earn the band a GRAMMY ® nomi- nation for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Since this photo shoot, Keane has released another album, Perfect Symmetry, and an EP, Night Train, resulting in four consecutive number 1 albums in the UK for a grand total of more than 10 million albums sold, firmly establishing them as one of Britain's most successful and cherished bands.
