A Message from Fr. Carlos _________________________________________
Dr. Thomas Lane Butts tells the story of six
people who froze to death around a campfire on a
bitterly cold night. Each had a stick of wood they
might have contributed to the fire, but for reasons
satisfactory to themselves each person refused to
give what they had. A woman would not give her
stick of wood because there was an African-
American person in the circle. A homeless man
would not give because there was a rich man there.
The rich man would not give because his
contribution would warm someone who was
obviously shiftless and lazy. Another would not give
his stick when he recognized one not of his
particular religious faith. The African-American man
withheld his piece of wood as a way of getting even
with the whites for all they had done to him and his
race. And the fire died as each person withheld
his/her piece of fuel for reasons justifiable to them.
This story was originally told in a poem that ends
with these tragic lines: “Six logs held fast in death’s
still hand was proof of human sin; They did not die
from the cold without; they died from the cold
within.” (Rev. Siegfried S. Johnson) –
As I read the Gospel for our Breaking of the
Bread, I cannot help but wonder: Did the widow in
the story hear Jesus’ words praising her? It doesn’t
really matter my friends because whether she heard
them or not she was doing that which was pleasing
to God. Jesus praises her and invites his disciples to
imitate this woman not for what she put in the
collection basket but rather for the sacrifice with
which she gave. Jesus watches how his people put
in their coins in the collection basket. He does not
watch at the amount of the checks but at how it is
given, Jesus looks at the heart of the givers. This is
the lesson for us his followers too; we give of what
we have. We do not give that which is not ours, that
which is not in our hands. In her own way, this
widow was contributing to God’s temple to advance
the Faith of her race; she glowed with her love for
God and for His Temple. Today we will do well
meditating upon the fact that we too have been
called to move and advance forward God’s Kingdom
here in Bayville and beyond not just with our
material things but also with those beautiful talents
God has bestowed upon us.
Let us keep doing good daily and then let us
also disappear. It really doesn’t matter if we hear or
not the praises of people. And like the widow from
the Gospel, let us give of ourselves to the Lord
always WITHHOLDING NOTHING!
May your week be prosperous and your
generosity unmatchable,
Fr. Carlos “What We Do In Life Echoes in Eternity”
Joke of the week…
A six-year-old boy, home from his first day
at Church, was asked what he thought of the Holy
Mass. “It was OK,” he replied, “but I think it was
unfair that the pastor at the altar did all the work, and
then a bunch of other people came around and took
away all the money.” Amen to that small lad’s
insight!

Bishop Robert Barron’s
“The Mass”
Hear Ye, Hear Ye, all those who want to know more
about the Mass…
Have you ever wondered what the Mass was about
and what it means? Why does the Catholic Church
insist on a “Sunday Obligation” to attend Mass?
Well, I’m glad you asked. For six weeks beginning
October 6, 2021 we will look at the Mass through a
video series presented by Bishop Robert Barron,
Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles. He is the former
rector of Mundelein Seminary in Chicago, and he is
the founder of Word on Fire Ministries, he is also an
author of several books, an in-demand speaker, and
he was the creator of the Catholicism series that
aired several years ago. Bishop Barron will walk us
through the Mass to help us better understand what it
is and why the Church places a great emphasis on it.
We will see how the Mass brings us into the
heavenly realm and how we are joined to Christ
himself through this encounter at the Mass. By the
end we will wonder, as Bishop Barron does, why do
75% of our Catholic brothers and sisters stay away.
Join me in this journey into this treasured encounter
with God with Bishop Barron as our guide.
Every Wednesday, October 6-November 10, 2021
(six weeks), 11:00 am-12:00 pm in Fr. Brennan Hall
*There is no cost, no registration. All that is required
is you, and a desire to better understand and
appreciate the Mass. Won’t you join me as we
encounter Heaven on earth in the beauty of the
Mass? -Fr. Dan
