Letter from the President
Aloha EWI of Honolulu! Thank you to Kim Asuncion for being an inspiration and leader to all of us. I am grateful to have worked beside Kim this last year, and I have learned so much from her. I have big shoes to fill. Kim, I hope I do you proud. Gratitude is this year’s theme. Google’s definition of gratitude is the quality of being thankful, and readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. The members of EWI live this each day, which is one of the reasons we are a successful chapter.
Our mission at EWI is to bring together key individuals from diverse businesses for promoting member firms, enhancing personal and professional development, and encouraging community involvement. I think EWI of Honolulu exceeds the mission. We are grateful for the opportunity to interact on a personal and professional level. We support each other in our careers, and we encourage each other in our endeavors; however, we are more than our professions and connections. This is more than a network group…this is a family. As this year’s president, I will do my best to lead, and with our members share the EWI vision and continue the growth of the chapter. Thank you to the 2019- 2020 EWI Board and appointees, JaDawn Perez, Francine Lee-Kadota, Joanna Hall, Karynthya Trevino, Sherry Ravago, Jenni Liu, Karen Yonemoto, Preet Nijjar, Rose Balagtas, Madeleine Noa, Leianne Pedro, Melissa Tree, Brenda Kanno, and Kim Asuncion for giving of their time and talents. With gratitude as the theme, I challenge each one of you to write down ten things you are grateful for each day for next 30 days. It can be as simple as the first sip of coffee, to spending time with family. Look at all things in your life that bring you joy. Each day doesn’t have to be different, think about what you were thankful for that day. Once we start looking at the positive, then the negative of the day goes away. To quote John F. Kennedy: As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. I am grateful to be your 2019 – 2020 president and I am looking forward to a great year. Thank you! Roseann Freitas President EWI of Honolulu 2019-2020

EWI’s 24th ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT, “FORE” EDUCATION What a beautiful day it was at our 24th Annual Golf Tournament, “Fore” Education, at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club in Ewa Beach on Friday, 8/23/19! We had 3 Platinum sponsors, 13 Gold teams, 27 Golf teams, numerous volunteers, lots of food, drinks, prizes and great weather. We netted about $29,000 after expenses and taxes. As you know, these monies will help fund our 2 scholarships and more next year. Thank you to all our wonderful sponsors, participants, volunteers, donors, Hawaii Prince Golf Club for a great venue, Sheraton Waikiki for the awesome bentos, Bird of Paradise Restaurant for the delicious dinner, Oahu Spine and Rehab for the soothing massages, our EWI Past Presidents and New City Nissan for the Hole in One sponsorships and our tireless volunteers that made this special day possible. It would not have been possible without everyone involved. Thank you so much to my supportive Ways & Means committee for all your help! Really appreciate everyone’s efforts. Looking forward to next year! Sincerely Yours, Francine Lee-Kadota, 2018-2019 Ways & Means Director

OCTOBER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEBINAR
Live Your Best Yes
Have you ever agreed to a project for a peer, leader (or friend or family), that was outside your capacity or boundaries, simply because you didn’t want to disappoint someone? Do you feel like you walk around with the weight of the world on your shoulders, teetering on the edge of burnout, because you’re afraid to say no or striving to prove your worth? Setting and communicating boundaries and expectations often feels difficult because it’s linked to a core element we often overlook – our level of confidence. Many times, we find ourselves working harder at someone else’s happiness and success over our own. This doesn’t lead to success, it leads to resentment and frustration. How can you live your best yes, the one that keeps you and your team thriving, while avoiding commitments that lead to chaos? This interactive webinar teaches simple tools to help you discover why you tend to say yes when you want to say no, how to create a more confident mindset, and how to collaborate for results (even when others don’t agree). You’ll walk away with a simple framework to help you kindly communicate healthy boundaries.
Participants will walk away with: • The importance communicating boundaries plays in successful career and life relationships • Recognizing the link between their confidence and ability to communicate expectations, and how to positively impact it. • A self-coaching tool to improve their confidence and prevent burnout before it starts. • A framework to communicate boundaries that emphasizes collaboration and results.
