Power requirements

Power requirements for electrical equipment differ from area to area Theoperating voltage of this machine is preset at the factory according to it s intended destination. However, some models are equipped with a voltage selector. If your machine is so equipped, before connecting check to see that the VOLTAGE SELECTOR on the rear panel is set to the voltage for your area.

Features

WARNING

This equipment generates and uses radio frequency energy and if

not installed and used properly, that is, in strict accordance with the

We greatly appreciate your purchase of the AKAIEWV2000 EWI & EVI Sound Module.

The EWV2000 is a sound module exclusively for use with the EWI 1000 (woodwind type) or EVI 1000 (brass/valve type) wind instrument style controller.

This manual includes detailed explanations of operations, etc. de signed to show you how to use the superior functions of the EWV2000 to their fullest extent.

• The EWV2000 is a 2-system type "analog synthesizer module" with 2 VCOs, 2 VCFs, 2 VC As, and 4 EGs.

• The EVW2000 can be used to produce a rich variety of expressions with the breath sensor, lip sensor, and touch sensor of the EWI 1000 or EVI 1000 wind instrument controller, including rise and fall of the tone, strength of the tone, pulse width modulation, clarity of timbre, vibration effects, and glide effects.

• Using the two synthesizers makes it possible to create a variety of voices and play in a variety of ways, for example by producing two

different sounds simultaneously or slightly varying the attack and sustain for the two sources.

• The EWV2000 is equipped with 64 built-in memory banks, and the voice in each bank can be named.

• MIDI OUT jacks, so an external MIDI sound source or sampler can also be played from the EWI1000 or EVI1000.

• Audio signals can be input from an external component, for exam

ple a sampler, and mixed with the synthesized sound, and voices and expressions can be created using the sampled sound.

• 16-character LCD dialogue-style easy operation improves operabil-ity and ease of verification when editing.

• Equipped with tape interface for external storage of memory files, so voice data can be recorded on cassette tapes.

• 64 ready-playable voices are stored in the memory banks upon shipment. These voices can easily be used as a base for creating your own voices.

• Polyphonic play of up to 4 sounds is possible on an external MIDI-compatible sound source using the programmed polyphonic chord patterns.

POWER: Power Switch Use this switch to turn the power of the EWV2000 on and off. PROGRAM UP/DOWN: Program Up/Down Jack Use this jack to connect a foot switch. The memory bank number can be switched using the foot switch. (For details, refer to the explanation on Page 7). INSTRUMENT: Controller Connection Jack Use this jack to connect the exclusive EWI1000 or EVI1000 wind instru ment style controller. VIBRATE: Vibration Control Knob This knob adjusts the level of the vibrato (VCO), pulse width modulation (PWM), growl and wow-wow (VCF), and tremolo (VCA) for the lip sensor on the EWI1000 or the vibration lever on the EVI1000. The func tion of this knob depends on the mode selected with the VIB button de scribed below.

BEND: Bend Control Knob This knob is used to manually adjust the bend width for the bender plate/ touch sensor on the EWI1000 or EVI1000. Use it to move the pitch up or down. The outer, large knob is the adjuster for properly operating the bender plate's touch sensor. Turn this knob clockwise without touching the bender plate until the LED lights, then turn it back a little counterclock wise so that the LED turns off. The adjustment is now complete. GLIDE: Glide Control Knob

Use this knob to obtain a glide effect (soft rising or falling of the pitch) with the glide plate/touch sensor on the EW11000 or EV11000. If you use this with skill you can achieve portamento. Adjust the outer adjust knob in the same way as for the BEND knob. BREATH: Breath Control Knob Adjust this knob so that the VCO, PWM, VCF, and VCA function smoothly according to the strength of the breath blown into the mouth piece on the EWI1000 or EVI1000. The outer, large knob is the adjuster for properly operating the breath sensor for the mouthpiece. Adjust it in the same way as for the BEND and GLIDE knobs, without blowing into the mouthpiece.

VALUE: Value Slide Controller This controller is used in the EDIT mode when editing to increase or de crease, select, turn on or off, and choose letters, etc. for the parameters.

(D VALUE UP/DOWN: Value Up/Down Keys These keys are used in the PLAY mode to increase or decrease the number of the memory banks. Also, in the EDIT mode, they can be used increase or decrease, select, turn on or off, or change letters or codes for the parameters one step at a time (by pressing the desired key once).

® DISPLAY: Display Section LED SOURCE 1— In the PLAY mode, this LED lights for a voice whose source 1 level is "1" or greater. In the EDIT mode, it lights when setting the various parameters for source 1.

LED SOURCE 2— In the PLAY mode, this LED lights for a voice whose source 2 level is "I" or greater. In the EDIT mode, it lights when setting the various parameters for source 2. THE LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY (LCD) indicates various messages, voice names, and parameters for the EWV2000 in 16 characters. The dis play is equipped with a backlight, so it can be seen even in dark places. The CONTRAST knob adjusts the contrast of the LCD. Adjust it according to the place in which you are using the EWV2000 to the position in which you can see the display more clearly.

(Jj) WRITE: Memory Write Button This button is used to store voices that you created or edited into the memory bank. It is also used to copy a memory bank which has been re-called onto another bank number.

® AUTO TUNE: Auto Tune Button When this button is pressed, the VCOs and VCFs of the EWV2000 are au tomatically set to the optimum tuning.

Make a habit of pressing this button before performances and before edit ing or creating new sounds.

TUNE: Tuning Button

This button is used to tune the pitch of the EWV2000 to match that of other instruments. Tuning is possible within a range of ± 100 cents. PHONES: Headphones Jack Use this jack to monitor over headphones. Adjust the volume with the LINE OUT knob. EDIT: Edit Mode Button

Use this button when creating or editing voices. After pressed, memory bank buttons 1 through 8 and memory number buttons 1 through 8 are used to select the parameters, the EWV2000 is set to the EDIT mode, and the parameters appear on the LCD. When pressed again, the EDIT mode is cancelled, the EWV2000 returns to the PLAY mode, and the bank number and voice name are displayed on the LCD. BACKWARD: Backward Button When setting parameters in the EDIT mode, if this button is pressed, the parameter being edited is moved backward to the previous parameter. Each time the button is pressed the parameter switches back one step. For details, refer to Page 33.

BANK (l-8)/SOURCE 1: Memory Bank/Source 1 Parameter Select Buttons

In the PLAY mode, these buttons select the memory bank (1 through 8), and in the EDIT mode, they select the source 1 parameters. NUMBER (1-8)/SOURCE 2: Memory Number/Source 2 Parameter Select Buttons

In the PLAY mode, these buttons select the memory numbers (1 through 8) together with the memory bank (1 through 8) select buttons (20). In the EDIT mode, they select the source 2 parameters.

k Parameter Select Buttons Buttons 2 through 5 are the same parameters for sources 1 and 2. J I- OSC: Used to select the VCO parameters. U- VCF: Used to select ihe VCF parameters. IS- VCF EG— Used to select the parameters for the VCF envelope

generator.

ts- LEVEL: Used to set up the absolute values of the source I and 2 pitches.

Buttons 6 through 8 are used for both source 1 and 2 (S- VIB/BEND: With this button, the vibrato (VCO), PWM, growl

(VCF), and tremolo (VCA) effects can be set for each voice. Also, the bend width for each voice can be set within a maximum range of ±700 cents.

CHORD: This is a special function which makes it possible to play an external MIDI compatible sound source in polyphonic. For details refer to Page 38. SAVE: Used to save voice data onto a tape. BREATH INTENSITY: With this button, the breath sensor efTect

m- EFFECT: This button contains modes for selecting the trigger (sin-gle/multi) for triggering the envelope generator and one of the three filters for processing voices. For details, refer to Pages 30,32. LABEL: Used to give names or labels to voices you have created. LOAD: Used to load data which has been saved onto a tape.

LINE OUT: Line Output Jack and Output Level Knob The output jack is a <£6.3mm standard phone plug jack. Connect it to the line input jack on a mixer or amplifier. Usually set the output level knob between the 8 and 10 position. EXT IN: External Sound Source Input Jack and Input Level Knob The input jack is a 06.3 mm standard phone plug jack. Connect it to the line output jack on an external synthesizer or digital sam pler. EXT IN is used with source 1..Usually set the input level knob be tween the center and the 10 position, and adjust the output level of the syn thesizer or digital sampler so that the sound is input with no distortion.

The func tion of this knob depends on the mode selected with the VIB button de scribed below.

(D TAPE IN/OUT: Cassette Tape Recorder Input/Output Jacks Use these jacks when saving or loading voice data onto or from a

cassette tape. Connect with mini plug cords.

(D MEMORY PROTECT: Memory Protect Switch This switch is used to protect the memory banks. Set to OFF when

writing voice data, or when loading or verifying data on a tape. Oth erwise, keep in the ON position.

(D MIDI OUT: MIDI Output Terminal

Use this terminal when you want to control another MIDI compo

nent (synthesizer or keyboard) or a MIDI sampler with the EWIlOOOorEVIlOOO.

Connections

Connecting to the EWIIOOO or EVIIOOO

Insert the connector plug securely using the exclusive cord included

with the EWV2000, as shown in the diagram.

NOTE: Make sure the power is turned off when connecting. The exclusive cord is a multi cable. Pulling strongly on the cord

or handling it roughly may damage it.

Connecting to an External Sound Stot

It is possible to control a MIDI component (synthesizer or keyboard)

or a MIDI digital sampler with the EWIIOOO or EVIIOOO by using the

MIDI OUT and EXT IN jacks.

1) Connect the MIDI OUT terminal with an AKAI DD-X25 or DD-X50 MIDI DIN 5P connector cable.

2) Connect the EXT IN jack with a standard phone plug cord.

How the EWV2000 Works

The EWV2000 EWI & EVI Sound Module is a synthesizer sound

module played with the EWI 1000 or EVI 1000 wind instrument style

controller.

It is basically two monophonic synthesizers combined into one unit,

and can produce two different sounds simultaneously. Also, it is

equipped with an external input jack, so it can be used to process or

play voices from another synthesizer or a digital sampler.

Sounds consist of three components — pitch, tone, and volume.

Pitch =* the height of the sound

Tone =* how harmonics are incorporated into the sound

Volume =* the strength of the sound

The tone peculiar to acoustic instruments such as pianos, violins,

flutes, or organs is formed by envelopes (the way the sound is pro

duced), which are variations of these three components over time. The tone is particularly governed by the envelopes for the harmonics

With a synthesizer, the strength of the sound and the amount of harmonics are generated by the "EG", the envelope generator. The

synthesizer is designed so that many different sounds can be created.

Basically, a voice is generated when the VCF (voltage controlled

filter) adds the changes of the harmonics to the audio signal (sound source) output from the VCO (voltage controlled oscillator), and the VCA (voltage controlled amplifier) adds the changes to the strength of the sound. There are also sounds which can only be produced by

adding an envelope to the VCO to obtain changes in pitch (such as the

sounds of cats, dogs, birds, or other animals, as well as humans).

Furthermore, if the synthesizer is to be called an "instrument", it

must have a controller to make it possible to play in any key and pitch.

Conventional synthesizers used keyboard type controllers. The

EWV2000 uses wind instrument type controllers. The EWV2000 is de

signed to obtain the key and pitch by changes in a special control vol tage.

The EWV2000 includes two synthesizer systems, so it offers many possibilities for creating sounds. For example, it can produce two dif ferent sounds simultaneously, the attack, sustain, and release can be varied, etc.

your lips. Depending on this pressure, the EWI1000 will function

Voice data has been stored in the 64 memory banks upon shipment from the factory. When using your EWV2000 for the first time, use the following procedure to save these voice data onto a cassette tape.

1) Prepare a cassette tape. There is no need to use a Hi-Fi audio cassette tape — a regular compact tape will do fine.

2) Using a mini-plug cord (available in stores), connect the EWV2000's TAPE OUT jack to the mike input jack on the cassette tape recorder.

Saving One Bank at a Time

With the EWV2000, it is possible to save one bank at a time. The

procedure is basically the same. First press the SAVE button.

The display will read:

This refers to bank "1". If the SAVE button is pressed again, the

voice data stored in bank 1 is recorded onto the tape.

2) Press the VERIFY button on the EWV2000.

4) Set the cassette tape recorder to the playback mode. A microprocessor in the EWV2000 checks whether there are any errors in the saved voice data.

If the display reads as shown above, rewind the tape, then in crease or decrease the volume and repeat steps 3 and 4 above

until "GOOD" appears. If "ERROR" appears several times, save the data once again.

Once the voice data has been properly saved, make an index for the tape and store the tape. The pre-programmed voice data can be loaded into the EWV2000 and used whenever needed.

After you have saved and verified the data, turn the MEMORY PROTECT switch back ON.

Use the same procedure as for verifying to load the voice data from the cassette tape back into the EWV2000.

1) Set the MEMORY PROTECT switch on the rear panel to the OFF position.

2) Press the TAPE button. 3) Press the LOAD button twice.

4) Playback the tape on which the voice data has been saved. 5) After you have loaded the data into the EWV2000, rewind the

tape.

Loading One Bank at a Time

Here also use the same procedure as for verifying! In this case, howev er, any bank can be loaded.

Example: Loading data saved in bank 1 into bank 8.

Procedure

(1) First turn off the MEMORY PROTECT switch on the rear panel.

(2) Press the TAPE button. (3) Press the LOAD button.

(4) Press the VALUE DOWN button to set to... j&

(5) Press the TAPE button again. (6) Replay the data saved in bank 1.

The bank 1 voice data is now loaded in bank 8. Note that the voice data previously set in bank 8 is cleared.

Verifying Data Saved One Bank at a Time If you have saved data onto the cassette tape one bank at a time, make sure to set the EWV2000 to the same bank as when saved.

to set the display to the same number as when you saved. Ex.:

Variois voices have been stored in the EWV2000's 64 memory banks

upon shipment from the factory. Each bank number has a voice name.

Now try playing the various voices.

Procedure

(1) Make sure the EWV2000's power is off.

(2) Connect the EWI1000 or EVI1000 controller to the EWV2000 using the exclusive control cable included with the controller.

(3) With your finger on the controller's glide plate, turn the EWV2000's power on, and press the AUTO TUNE button. The EWV2000's VCOs and VCFs are now automatically set to the op timum tuning.

(4) First, adjust the BREATH control knob. Without blowing into the mouthpiece, turn the outer BREATH control knob clockwise

to the point where the LED lights, then turn the knob slightly

back counterclockwise so that the LED turns off. The adjustment has now been completed.

(5) Next, adjust the GLIDE control knob. Without touching the glide plate for the EWI1000, and without blowing into the mouth

piece for the EVI1000, adjust in the same way as for the

BREATH control knob.

(6) Now adjust the BEND control knob. Without touching the con troller's bend plate, adjust in the same way as for the GLIDE con trol knob.

(7) When the BREATH, GLIDE, and BEND control knobs have been adjusted, check that the LINE OUT jack on the EWV2000 is

connected to an amplifier or mixer. To listen with headphones,

connect stereo headphones to the PHONES jack, and adjust the

output level with the LINE OUT knob.

(8) Select a voice. The EWV2000 is designed so that the voice memory banks and numbers can be switched by using the

VALUE UP and DOWN keys and BANK and NUMBER but tons on control panel or by using the foot switch.

(11) Change banks and numbers and try out many different sounds. (Refer to the respective manuals for operation and playing of the EWI1000 and EVI1000 controllers.)

(12) Now try adding a vibration effect. Turn the VIBRATE knob clockwise, then for the EWI1000 apply pressure to the mouth piece in short, quick movements, and for the EVI 1000 move the vibration lever in short, quick movements to obtain such ef fects as vibrato, growl, wow-wow, and tremolo.

The mode changes each time the VIB button is pressed. To obtain vi

brato, select mode (b), then use the VALUE UP and DOWN keys to input the value you think will be most effect.

Values: 00^ No effect. 50 — Medium effect. 100 —♦ Maximum effect.

NOTE: The parameters of the edited voice are set back to th parameters before editing if you switch from the EDI.

(15) Now try to obtain portamento using the glide effect.

The glide effect is obtained by touching the GLIDE PLATE for

the EWI1000, and according to the strength applied to the

mouthpiece for the EVI1000.

The time which it takes for the pitch to change can be made longer by turning the GLIDE TIME knob clockwise. Effective portamento can be achieved by skillfully setting the TIME knob.

(16) Now try to transpose. The operation is extremely simple — just hold in the TRANSPOSE button and use the VALUE UP and DOWN keys and set to the desired point.

Creating Sounds

With the EWV2000, it is possible to create a variety of different sounds by recalling the parameters on the 16-character LCD and set ting their values. Changing the voices already stored in the memory to create new sounds is called editing.

The creation of sound on the EWV2000 can be largely divided into two types.

1. The first is by acoustic envelopes using the breath. This is the method best suited for playing the EWI1000 and EVI1000 The acoustic envelopes output by the breath sensor without using the VCF-EG and VCA-EG (the use of the breath by the player) con trol the VCF cut-off frequency, the resonance, the VCA volume and the VCO pitch, making it possible to create a rich variety of ex pressions.

2. The second is by setting the VCF-EG and VCA-EG with skill to create a wide variety of sounds. This is the same as for regular analog synthesizers. Percussive sounds or special effect sounds can also be produced. By using the breath with skill, it is possible to create a rich variety of dynamics and expressions.

Procedures for Creating Sound with Acoustic Envelopes

(1) First, set up so that basic playing is possible. (2) Select a bank number for a voice which you don't mind chang-

ing.

Play the recalled voice and readjust the BREATH kndbs (Refer to Page 14.)

(4) Next, press the EDIT button. The basic sound range1 for source 1 appears on the display.

Ex.: OSC-1 FREQ: MM

To select a different basic sound range, either press the VALUE UP or DOWN keys or use the slide controller.

(5) Next, press the source 2 LEVEL button and use the VALUE DOWN key to set the value to "00".

(10) Now press the source 1 VCF-EG button and set the parameters as follows:

Here also, all parameters are set to "00". It is also possible to set only the VCF-EG DEPTH value to "00". With the above settings, the VCF and VCA operate fully according to the acous tic envelope output of the breath.

(11) Now blow into the EWI1000 or EVI1000 and adjust the VCF cut-off frequency and resonance. First press the source 1 VCF button and the use the VALUE keys to adjust the cut-off fre quency.

Ex.:

When set to "00", it may happen that no sound is produced unless you blow very hard. At the "100" setting, there is no va riation in the tone depending on the intensity of the breath. Thus, set to a cut-off frequency between "00" and "50" where it is easy to obtain expression. First try setting to about "10", then try increasing and decreasing the resonance.

(12) Again press the source 1 VCF button and set to the resonance setting mode.

(13) Now press the source 1 VCF button again set to the oscillator wave frequency modulation mode. This gives the sound a dis torted effect.

Set to the sound you prefer. AT "00", the effect is minimum. (14) Next set to the pitch follower setting mode, which varies the

VCF cut-off frequency as a function of the pitch. Press the source 1 VCF button to enter this mode.

At **00" there is no effect. Usually set to between "10" and "50". For some sounds, you may want to set it at "100". Basi cally set so that the tone and volume are equal for all sounds from bass through treble then find the best setting for the vari ous passages.

(15) Again press the source 1 VCF button and adjust the highpass filter cut-off frequency.

At "00" there is no effect. When set to "100", the low frequen cies become practically inaudible. Usually use between "00" and "50". To create more delicate sounds, set to between "60" and "100".

(16) Now try changing the sound source waveform. Press the source 1 OSC button to set to the sound source waveform select mode.

Ex.: OSC-1 WAVE AAAA

Use the VALUE UP and DOWN keys to change the waveform. The basic tone changes when the waveform is changed.

When the resonance is set to "100", strident sounds are generated for that cut-off frequency. Usually it is best to set to between "00" and "50".

(17) Now press the OSC button again and set to the waveform pulse width control mode.

Try moving the VALUE slide controller up and down. The

tone should change further.

Try using various pulse widths while playing, and also change

the waveforms so that you can hear the variations.

These are the basic operations for creating sound with acoustic enve

lopes. Set the parameters to many different values and through trial

and error you'll find the types of sounds you like. Also use this proce

dure as a base to make source 2 sounds.

Creating Sounds with the EG for Source 2

(1) First press the source 1 LEVEL button and set the value to

Try playing with these settings. The sound is similar to that of an oboe.

Also, by setting the VIB/BEND and BREATH INTENSITY parame

ters as follows, it is possible to obtain dynamic expression as a function

of the intensity of the breath.

(8) Now press the VIB/BEND button located on the source 1 side

and set the lip sensor parameters.

Ex.:

(9) Next press the source 2 BREATH INTENSITY button and

set the parameters as follows:

When blown strongly, the sound will be loud and bright.

Set the BREATH VCF and BREATH VCA values according to tW

passage and phrase to increase the ability for expression.

NOTE: A clicking sound will be produced if the BREATH VCF

and BREATH VCA values are stronger than the VCF-EG

DEPTH and VCA-EG DEPTH values when breath is ap

plied. When creating sounds, try increasing and decreasing

parameter values to find the best point.

This is due to electric signal reasons and is not a problem with

your equipment. Set the parameter values so that this doesn't

happen.

(10) Now press the EFFECT button located on the source 1 side and

see how the effect filter modes change the sound.

Use the VALUE UP and DOWN buttons to switch the effect filter. To create a sound similar to an oboe, use filter "2".

Mixing Source 1 and Source 2

With the EWV2000, it is possible to mix and play two different voices created with source 1 and source 2. By skillfully creating sounds you

can store a total of 128 voices in the 64 memory banks.

A. Playing only source 1 voices

(1) Press the source 1 LEVEL button and use the VALUE keys to set the value to "100".

The EWV2000 envelope generators are equipped with two trigger

modes, "SINGLE" and "MULTCH". Usually use the "SINGLE"

mode, but for non-legato and staccato pieces try using the

"MULTCH" mode.

The BACKWARD button comes in extremely handy when creating

sounds. When it is pressed while a certain parameter is being edited,

the display returns to the previous parameter. The parameter changes back each time the button is pressed.

function makes it possible to create a variety of sound source wave

Set the VCF and VCA levels etc. so that the source 1 and source 2 sounds are produced simultaneously. Next play with different wave

forms set for OSC-1 and OSC-2. You should be able to discover a lot of different sounds. In particular, controlling the VCO pulse widths provides even greater variations.

This synchronized operation is quite effective. Try changing the

OSC-2 "FREQ" parameter - the OSC-l pitch will change simultan, ously. Also control the OSC-2 "OSC-EG DEPTH" parameter so th_

you understand the effect. The "EG" parameters for the VCFs are used for the "OSC-EG" parameters for the VCOs.

"OSC-l" includes a "WAVE ENV FM" function for applying strong modulation with the signal output from the source 2 VCF. If

this function is used with skill, it is possible to create special effects like the sound of a bell or metallic sounds.

Try changing the value and playing. Set the source 2 LEVEL to "00"

and control the OSC-2 "FREQ", and "FINE" parameters. To begin

with, it is a good idea to set the cut-off frequency for the source 2 VCF

to "100".

One special technique is to set the cut-off frequency for the source 2

VCF between "00" and "20" and add complex modulation using the

VCF-EG or BREATH VCF.

Interesting effects can also be obtained by varying the OSC-2 pitch

with the "OSC-EG DEPTH" or "BREATH VCO". Create original sounds through a trial and error process. Also set the source 2 level to

With the EWV2000, it is possible to store the voices which you have

created in 64 memory banks. In the EDIT mode, after setting the vari

ous parameters, press the WRITE button. If the display reads:

The EWV2000 is equipped with a MIDI OUT terminal, making it

possible to play an external MIDI-compatible sound source from the

Ways of Using the

Of the data sent from the MIDI OUT terminal, the velocity value is

fixed at "40H", so dynamics cannot be achieved using the breath. For

this reason, the EWV2000 is equipped with an EXT IN jack, and ex

pression — dynamics or modulation — can be enhanced via the

EWV2000's VCFs and VCAs.

Use a MIDI cable and a standard phone plug audio cable to connect as

shown in the diagram.

With this setting, the external sound source's line output signal is

input to the source 1 VCF via the EWV2000's EXT IN jack.

Outline:

When the "EXT BALANCE" value is set to -100, the sound soun

waveform signal output from the source 1 VCO is completely turned

off and only the external sound source's line output signal passes

through the source 1 VCF.

(3) Set the VCF EG and VCA EG depths to "00" and the "BREATH VCF" and "BREATH VCA" values to "100",

then play. Setting the VCF cut-off frequency to between "00"

and "50" is effective.

Ex.:

Setting the "BREATH RESON" adds variation to the changes in

sound.

Use the EXT IN jack skillfully to play voices from external MIDI-

compatible synthesizers or digital samplers with rich expression.

Tl Of course it is also possible to apply vibrato, glide, and bend effects for the external sound source and mix it with a source 2 voice to achieve a heavier sound. Also, if the EXT BALANCE value is set between -50 and +50, source 1 VCO voices can also be mixed. Try it.

The chord patterns are programmed within the range —12—0 +12. The key note range is C—B.

Chord pattern examples: Unison 00:00 (2 notes)

+9:+9:+9(3notes) -5:-5:-5:-5(4notes)

Harmony 00:+4:+7 (3 notes)

-12:-5:00:+4(4notes) Octave -12:00 (2 notes)

-12:00: + 12(3notes)

A maximum of 4 polyphonic notes can be set.

This is one of the major functions on the EWV2000. Polyphonic chord patterns (unison, harmony, octave bars, dissonant chords, etc.) which you have programmed yourself can be played in polyphonic on an ex ternal MIDI-compatible sound source.

Setting Procedures

(1) First set the MIDI transmission channel to match the receiving channel of the external sound source.

(2) Next press the EDIT button. (3) Now press the TAPE button. The display will read as follows:

When the cursor is at the CD value position, use the UP and DOWN buttons to set the program number between 00 and 15.

A maximum of 16 chord patterns can be programmed, and the chord patterns can be assigned at random to the 12 notes/1 octave of key notes.

(4) After inputting the program number, press the TAPE button to move the cursor.

(5) Use the VALUE UP and DOWN keys to set the first note for the chord pattern within the range — 12 — 0 — -I-12.

(6) After the first note is set, press the TAPE button to move the cursor and set the second note.

(7) If the chord pattern you are programming only consists of 2 notes, leave the area for the 3rd and 4th notes empty by using

the VALUE UP and DOWN keys and setting the blanks located between the — 1 and 00 values.

Ex.: CD// //://:

If the chord pattern consists of 3 notes, leave the area for the 4th note empty.

Ex.: CD// //://://:

If the chord pattern consists of 4 notes, set the areas for all four notes.

(8) Once program number "00" is set, press the TAPE button to move the cursor to the program number area, then press the VALUE UP key to set to "01". Now repeat steps (4) through (7) to set the chord pattern for program number "01".

Ex.: CD/1 //:+4:+7:

(9) Now repeat steps (4) through (8) to set the chord patterns through program number "15".

Ex.: CD15-12:-5://:+4

(10) When you have finished programming up to 16 chord patterns, assign the chord patterns to a key note.

First press the CHORD button. The display will read:

CHORD PLAY :0FF

Now press the VALUE UP button. The display will change as follows:

CHORD PLAY ON

(11) When the above is displayed, press the CHORD button again to switch to the mode in which it is possible to assign chord pat

terns to key notes.

Thus, every time the CHORD button is pressed, the key nof changes in order.

After the key note reaches B, it returns to C. Upon shipment from the factory, all key notes are set to program number "00". When rtie

same program number is assigned to all key notes, the polyphonic

chord shifts as you play key notes of different pitches.

After all key notes have been assigned program numbers, store these in the memory banks. These polyphonic chord programs can be stored for each voice.

The polyphonic chords you have programmed can be saved onto a cassette tape along with the voice data. However, when saving one bank at a time, the chord pattern data is not recorded. When saving, verifying, or loading the data onto or from a cassette tape, always use the following modes:

NOTE: The assigned data is cleared when the EDIT button is pressed to set to the PLAY mode and another bank number is recalled while assigning program numbers to key notes.

First turn the MEMORY PROTECT switch on the rear panel to the OFF position. Next hold in the WRITE button and set the bank number.

Parameter Copy Function

The EWV2000 is equipped with a convenient function by which the

source 1 side parameters can be copied onto the source 2 side (or vice

versa) in the EDT mode.

Procedure

Example: Copying the source 1 VCF EG parameters onto the source

(1) First, set to the EDIT mode.

(2) Hold in the source 1 VCF EG button and press the source 2 VCF

EG button. The display will flash, and when copying is completed,

the source 2 LED will light.

This parameter copy function will only work for items common for

both the source 1 and source 2 parameters. Thus, the FREQ, FINE,

WAVE, PULSE WIDTH, and OSC EG data for OSC can be copied

between source 1 and source 2.

This copy function can be used to set the same voices for source 1 and

source 2, or to transfer the source 1 (or source 2) voices onto source 2

(or source 1). NOTE: The copy function will work for OSC, VCF, VCF EG, VCA

EG, LEVEL, and BREATH INTENSITY, but not for

VIB/BEN, CHORD, EFFECT, or LABEL.
