The Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour is distinctive in that all eight homes open to visitors on Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 10-12, can be reached by lake and land. And, given that choice,

die-hard Lakers likely will opt for the water route whenever possible.

“Ken and I love being out on the water,” said SML resident and tour regular Jean Hurt. “We generally arrange for out-of-town guests to join us for tour weekend, and going from home to home by boat is a great way to show them the lake. Besides, often the homes show their very best from the lake approach.”

“If the weather’s good,” Ken Hurt added, “we definitely prefer the water route. It’s usually faster and easier to get between houses that way. Tour volunteers staff each dock to assist with docking and to help get tour-goers in and out of their boats. They even remind us not to leave our tickets on board. If it appears there will be a long wait for docking space, we just move on and return when it is less crowded.”

Others use the “designated driver” approach, wherein a skipper drops off passengers and then lingers nearby while tour-goers explore each home.

This year’s tour is efficient by water, with the homes concentrated on the lower Roanoke (all below

Take along this issue of the Laker, which includes by-boat directions, as well as a copy of the 2014 Laker Map, available for free in racks around the region and at the Laker Media office (272 Westlake Road, behind Kroger). Pre-mark the route that’s best for you, depending on your starting point.

The SML Water Safety Council recommends all taking the tour by boat wear properly-fitting life jackets. At the very least, a jacket for each occupant should be on deck (rather than stowed away under seats or in a compartment) for easy access.

following pages in an order designed to provide an efficient trip by boat starting from Hales Ford Bridge.

The numbers for each home correspond to the official SML Charity Home Tour brochure, which is ordered on best visiting sequence by land. It is not the recommended sequence for boaters. Whether attending by boat or car, you may visit the homes in any order you wish. GPS coordinates given for each home’s dock are approximate.

Times indicated are estimated times from one dock to another with calm water and minimal boat traffic. Running time on tour days may be somewhat longer, depending on conditions. Use extra care around docks and other congested areas.

odd-numbered (green) channel markers will be on the right, and even-numbered (red) markers will be on the left. Going upstream (away from the dam), the opposite will be true. Lower-numbered markers are nearer the dam. Channel markers do not indicate distance to the dam or to one another, but rather channel boundaries in numerical sequence. It is prudent to stay well clear of all markers, especially if water is below full pond at the time of the tour. Watch for floating debris, especially if there has been significant rain. Unless otherwise directed, keep to the right side of river channels.

Orange banners will mark the dock of each Charity Home Tour home and volunteers will be on hand to assist boaters. At some homes, more than one dock will be in use; at others, dock space may be limited, and boaters may have to wait their turn to tie up. Do not use any dock where there is no one available to help with docking.

The Munn home underwent a makeover, including total house renovations, an addition, and extensive landscaping/hardscaping to resolve drainage issues. Little remains of the original appearance of the building or property. The addition included a garage, music room, master suite and exercise room with additional space underneath. New elements include beams, wood doors, trim and railings, all portraying the architect’s “Lux Lodge” Arts and Crafts design. The kitchen and fireplace were redone, and hardwood floors were installed. The remodeled deck has a wide view of Betty’s Creek. New exterior elements include roof extensions, stone and a new dock, all complementing the style. Engineered boulder walls retain the embankments on this sloping lot. The walk from the dock may have you puffing.

BY BOAT: Beginning at Hales Ford Bridge, travel downstream (toward Smith Mountain Dam), passing marker R27 on your right (starboard) side. Bear right into Betty’s Creek just before reaching the island situated between the entrances to Betty’s and Becky’s creeks. Angle across the mouth of Betty’s Creek toward the left shoreline, passing two small coves on the left. Slowly approach the third dock beyond, marked by a tall orange banner and staffed with volunteers to assist with docking. Approximate run time: 10–12 minutes

The Moonan home is a Cape Cod cottage-style house with intimate rooms, big windows, overhead pegged beams and abundant white trim. “I love intimate, inviting spaces,” said Michele Moonan, and the home reflects this cozy style. George acquired antique furniture while living in France; she collected pharmacy memorabilia, dolls and figurines. Both previously widowed, the couple combined their two households in this lake home, designed and built especially for them over three years. They also honor their former spouses in mementos, photos and the display of their collections. From the street, the steep driveway requires sure footing.

BY BOAT: Return to the mouth of Betty’s Creek and turn downstream, keeping the “barrier” island to port. Look for second cove on right after R25, with two no-wake buoys halfway in. Pass between the buoys and on to the 10th dock (fourth with cupola) on the right. Approximate run time: 10-12 minutes

The 5,000-square-foot Brownell/Shaw home was completely remodeled and redesigned by the homeowners in the Arts and Crafts style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Though the original footprint remains, before-and-after photos show the drastic changes and rearrangements to the home, which now include six bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths, a gourmet kitchen with 10-foot island and three copper sinks, and coffered-ceiling dining area opening to the great room. Outside, stylishly trimmed windows were added, along with new shingle siding and roof support details of Arts and Crafts design. It’s a gentle slope from the dock.

BY BOAT: Exit the Moonan’s cove and angle across the Roanoke channel, passing R22 on your left. Pass WC 1 that designates the beginning of Walton Creek, following the left shoreline to the 12th dock on left. The Shaw/Brownell home is tan with brown trim and sports a flag pole on shore and diving board on dock. Approximate run time: 10-12 minutes

Although the home of Paul and Nancy Stanley Van Dyke looks new, the 26-year-old home was recently remodeled. The homeowners desired a high-ceiling garage, which they got, along with a new wing with master suite and guest quarters, new kitchen, hickory flooring, new siding and other improvements. Everything looks open, bright and welcoming. Interesting artifacts include a South African zebra rug, masks and huge stuffed kudu (a type of antelope) above the fireplace. A media room cleverly converts to guest bedroom, and a large gaming area opens to a patio with outdoor kitchen and firepit. An antique fountain greets guests on the street side. Those arriving by boat have an easy walk to the house.

BY BOAT: Exit the Brownell/Shaw cove, staying toward left and passing the no-wake markers at Virginia Dare Marina. Head straight into the main section of Walton Creek, staying left when that section forks. The VanDyke’s gray-and-white dock will be on right almost at the end of the cove. Approximate run time: 5-7 minutes

In Montego Bay, the Massa home has a high view to the lake and Smith Mountain. The open-concept main floor with decorative columns provides a backdrop for a treasure trove of antiques, each item with its own story. There are several marble-topped tables; dining room antiques include an 1800s table, corner cabinet and buffet, antique chairs and lamps. A pie safe, dough box and trunks provide useful storage. The lower level includes a pool table and a walnut-topped bar, formerly used as a tailor’s bench by Pat Massa’s grandfather. Collections include miniature houses, Doulton dolls, Rose Medallion china, Delftware tobacco jars, birth plates, Santas and Dickens houses displayed in an upright trough.

BY BOAT: Backtrack out of Walton Creek, pointing toward the distant Park Place water tower and then entering the S-curve. Continue straight as you pass R17, leaving the water tower and small islands to your right. Pass along the outside of R15, then round the single shoal marker at the point of Park Place into the Montego Bay cove. Stay straight ahead when the cove bends, avoiding the shallows on your port side. Docking is at the nearby home of Bob and Ann Kosel, in the “heel” of that boot-shaped cove. Approximate run time: 10-12 minutes

The Diederich home demonstrates the power of vision and creativity when renovating a small cabin. Everything is new in the home, which doubled in size to 1,800 square feet and looks vintage in Arts and Crafts style. Notice the animal designs: pairs of herons, lizards, frogs each separated from its mate as Charlie is from his late wife, who passed away before the remodeling of “Bonnie’s Bungalow.” Carved wood sculptures

(a 10-foot bear, two herons and a 20-foot totem pole) decorate woodsy landscape, which includes abundant rhododendron. A paver driveway becomes a path to the lake, passing ponds, a waterfall, stone patio and firepit. The path to the dock is steep, so use caution.

BY BOAT: Backtrack out the Montego Bay cove to the main channel, keeping the two shoal markers where you enter the main channel to your right. Head down the Roanoke River toward Vista Pointe condos, avoiding the shoal markers between R11 and R8 (adjacent to the Bernard’s Landing Marina cove). Pass R6, then angle left around R4 and R2 and on toward the dam’s cut. Spot W1 in the distance at your 11 o’clock bearing and head toward it. Pass W1 on your left and follow that shore until you point toward the cove’s center finger. Enter that and look for the dock flag and totem pole about a third of a mile down, on the righthand shoreline of that finger. Approximate run time: 25-30 minutes

Bob and Pat Wetherel’s home in Contentment Island, with its cedar shake exterior, has a Nantucket look about it. Large windows show views of the lake and lush landscaping. The three-level 8,800-square-foot home has vintage touches reminiscent of the 1920s, including antique doors (nine from a home in Covington, entry door from Roanoke and side door from Boston); dark wood trim; retro tile work; antique-looking tub; medallion ceilings; and vintage light fixtures. Dramatic hall closet doors came from a Rocky Mount bowling alley. The four-bedroom home also includes a seven-seat theater and adjoining game room with dark-wood bar. The walk from the dock up to the house is an easy one.

BY BOAT: Exit Witcher Creek, pass R2 and angle across the large bay toward Vista Pointe and, further on, B1 (which marks the entrance to the Blackwater River). Angle to the right of the channel, rounding markers B2, B4, B6 and B8. Adjacent to B10, begin angling across the channel, passing the no-wake buoys of Pelican Point Marina on your left. Continue angling across the cove beyond the marina, aiming toward the Wetherel home to your right of the free-standing chimney, large oak and yellow house on the point that is dead ahead. Deeper water is to the right of Wetherel’s dock; avoid shoal buoy and rocks on the point to left of the dock. Approximate run time: 25-30 minutes

The home of Mark and Jacqueline Oliver has a number of automotive-themed mementos and art that reflect the homeowners’ interests – Mark rides a Harley Davidson and Jacqueline a BMW trike. Two outdoor decks running the length of the home provide a long view down the Blackwater channel toward Smith Mountain. Empty lots on each side provide privacy for the property. The 5,000-square-foot home has three bedrooms and an office. There are two stone fireplaces and stone-fronted bars, plus a family-heirloom grandfather clock, antique secretary, round-glass curio cabinet and an oversized media console on the lower level. Pontoons may pull up on the secluded beach just before the dock.

BY BOAT: Return to the Blackwater River channel and head upstream, passing the entrance to Gills Creek on the right at B12 and continuing on through the mini S-curve, B19-B22. Pass close to B24 and watch for B26 very close to the right hand shore as you motor on. Pass the cove beyond B26 and look for the second dock on your right. Approximate run time: 10-12 minutes

Return to your starting point, keeping to the right side of the channels when practical. A direct run back to Hales Ford Bridge will take about 50 minutes.
