ANZAC Day Ceremony at Davey Square In the recent holiday break three of our School Leaders, Sandeep, Ridhwan and Yaliniyan, together with School Chaplain, Mrs Prouty, attended the annual Commemoration of ANZAC Day for the members of the Cumberland RSL sub-branch which was held on Sunday 28 April 2019 at the memorial in Davey Square Memorial at Davey Square Reserve, Coventry Road, Strathfield. They were able to represent our school at this very special service and we received compliments about how well they engaged with our local member for Strathfield, Mrs Jodi McKay MP. We thank them very much for attending this commemoration and showing their respect to past and present servicemen and women.

Hazardous Material Removal We report that some potentially hazardous materials were illegally dumped outside our school on Monday night. The materials have now been safely removed by a licenced hazardous material removalist. The school worked closely with Strathfield Council and waste specialists who have advised that the materials were not - or were highly unlikely - to contain hazardous material. Please see the notification at the end of this newsletter for more information.

Opportunity Class 2020 Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving, academically gifted students. These classes support gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Applications for opportunity class placement for current Year 4 students, for Year 5 entry, are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 31 July 2019. For consideration for entry into an OC class in 2020 parents need to apply at the beginning of next term. You will need to apply online using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from Tuesday 30 April 2019 in a printed application information bookleat https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 The t or application website opens on Tuesday 30 April 2019 and closes on Friday 17 May 2019. No late applications will be accepted. There are no paper application forms. Please contact the school for assistance if you are not able to do this. You must submit only ONE application for each student. Please return the 'Intention to Apply' notification which was sent to all Year 4 students last term, to the office by this Friday the 3rd of May. Copies of this form are also available on the school app. Stage 1 Incursion Stage 1 students had a fabulous time at the science incursion held by Fizzics Education at the end of last term. Students were able to observe experiments about light and sound energy. Students were confident, engaged and asked great questions. The facilitator was so impressed about how much the students already knew about sound and light after last term’s unit of work. Ms Saad

Kindy Buddies In Term 1, Kindergarten and Year 6 students engaged in our Homebush West 'Buddies Program'. This program allows our Kindergarten students to build a positive friendship with older peers who are familiar with school routines and school life. Year 6 students visited their Kindergarten buddy every Friday morning to teach them how to be a Homebush West STAR, and how to conduct themselves safely in the playground and classroom. The buddies read stories, learnt how to use the SeeSaw app, created Fancy Hats and developed their social skills. On Friday the 12th of April, our buddies ventured on a fun Teddy Bears Picnic at Melville Park. Students brought their favourite teddy bear from home and lots of delicious food and drinks to share. It was a wonderful way to end Term 1. The Buddies Program was a very valuable learning experience for all and our Year 6 students were fantastic role models to our kindergarten students. Congratulations everyone. Ms Loos

PSSA Reports Senior Girls Soccer – Ms Pashley Junior Girls Soccer – Ms Pene Senior Boys Soccer – Mr Smith Junior Boys Soccer – Mr Penman Senior Mixed Netball – Ms Tuazon Junior Mixed Netball – Ms Joseph Junior Boys Soccer Soccer season is upon us and PSSA Jnr Boys were excited for a big season. On the last day of the term Homebush West played against Croydon for our first game of the season. The boys were lead by Aryan our goal keeper who made some beautiful saves throughout the game. Pranav took on leadership in the game, helping the boys move into positions, trying to keep formation and being an all-round fair player on the field. Our training has been focusing on the general rules and ball control. We will start working on keeping our formation on the field and spreading out to use the whole field. The boys should be proud of how they have represented Homebush West, we have a big season ahead of us. Hopefully next week we’ll get some numbers on the score card. Mr Penman

Senior Girls Soccer – Ms Pashley On the last day of Term 1 Homebush West played against a very energetic Burwood PS! Our senior girls absolutely SMASHED it!!! We went into tackles hard, we used the width of the field and really started to pass to each other! As a result Sabrina secured our team an incredible goal that gave us our very first win! Our defensive back line were impenetrable, a special mention to Koharu and Viktoria for their sensational clearance kicks! All the girls have shown such a huge improvement over the years and it is so fulfilling to see their development take flight! Your coach is so proud of each and every single one of you! Bring on the season! Ms Pashley Junior Girls Soccer On the last Friday of Term 1 the Junior Girls Soccer teams played against Burwood PS in a fantastic friendly to kick start the season! What a game!!! Although both junior teams walked away with a final score of 0-0, they played an intense game showing their readiness for the upcoming season. I am extremely proud of each and every one of the girls. They are so determined and have grasped the skills of soccer so quickly and capably after only just two training sessions. I am so excited for the season ahead! Well done girls!!! Enjoy the well-deserved break. Coach Pene Senior Mixed Netball This week we played against Enfield Public School. The A Team tied and scored 3 all, while B team won 5 nil. The matches were extremely intense. The players of the week were Olivia and Elena. It was an exciting and interesting game. The two players of the week showed great defensive and shooting skills. All of the members in A and B team played so well, with most of them playing their first game of netball. Next week, we will aim to improve on our stepping. Well done to both teams for their effort. Written by: Akshyaa and Saanvi

Senior Boys Soccer The team played their first game of the season against Croydon Public School. The first half saw Croydon put away two goals to lead at the break which was unfortunate as our boys were playing great football and were unlucky to be behind. The second half opened with our team piling on the pressure before Croydon scored a nice counter attacking goal. To our boys credit they hung in there and controlled the match. The hard work paid off when a Milind corner was deftly put away by Javan. A brilliant passing passage followed involving half our team, resulting in Milind’s clever ball across the goal being calmly slotted by Sebastian. Time was the enemy and the game ended 3-2 to Croydon but we were well on top and were unfortunate not to get the win. Outstanding effort across the park today with everyone turning in a stellar performance. Well done boys. Mr Smith Junior Mixed Netball This week was the first game of the season for Netball and we played against Enfield Public School. The Junior A team made great defensive efforts and fantastic attacking raids to the shooting circle. They were able to capitalise on this, scoring two goals to nil. The B team also played a great defensive game but were defeated by one goal to nil. Ms Joseph Stewart House Donation Drive 2019 Win a $4000 Holiday to a destination of your choice. Notification of Hazardous Material

Dear Parents/Carers Please be aware that rubbish containing potentially hazardous materials was identified on the Exeter Road footpath in front of the school this morning. This material was illegally dumped by an unknown member of the public.

The Strathfield Council’s Waste Management Team responded swiftly. The materials were assessed by hazardous material specialists and were professionally disposed of by 2pm today

The waste was initially secured and covered, barriers were placed around the waste. The school worked closely with Strathfield Council to have the waste professional removed and the area cleaned. Removal of the waste was undertaken by a licenced hazardous and asbestos removalist, all legal requirements and health and safety compliances were ensured. We wish to assure parents that the safety and welfare of our students, staff and community is always our priority. If you have any concerns about possible exposure to hazardous materials, further information is available from the SafeWork NSW website www.safework.nsw.gov.au and can also be found at the link below. https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment/factsheets/Pages/asbestos-and-health-risks.aspx

We are confident to report that the matter has been swiftly, and safely dealt with. If you have any information about the illegal dumping of materials, or if you have further questions, please contact us as soon as possible, within business hours. Regards, Estelle Southall Principal

Opportunity Class 2020

Woolworths Earn and Learn is back!!

Woolworths 超市的购物积分卷又开始了

的指定盒子里。 Stewart House Donation Drive 2019

Stewart House 捐款抽奖活动奖品丰富,包括价值$4000 的假期。我们会把信封发回家,

请家长捐两块钱,放在信封交回学校。在信封后面填好你们的个人联络资料。信封要在
