We value the P&Cs ongoing support for our school s focus on ensuring our students are acvely engaged with healthy lifestyles and life skills. This support includes Walking School Bus, support for Walk Safely to School Day, and fundraising support for school sport and fitness resources. This term P&C have supported the school with the purchase of 16 bikes and helmets to the value of $6000 to start up our annual bike riding program. Professional bicycle riding coaches will deliver weekly lessons to our Stage 3 students for the remainder of the term catering for the needs of beginner, intermediate and advanced riders. Providing access to this specific training will ensure our students are not only equipped with important physical skills but will get the most out of the Stage 3 Camp in Dubbo later this year. It is interesng to note that almost 50% of students are currently not confident bike riders. This term we have also connued our commitment to implemenng the HWPS Table Tennis Program which will see our team compete in the NSW Primary Schools Table Tennis Compeon. Again, the school s commitment to ensuring broad parcipaon in rich, engaging, accessible healthy life skills and sports is evident. The school thanks P&C for the generous sponsorship of our new “Ride for Life” program. We value the P&C’s ongoing support for our school’s focus on ensuring our students are actively engaged with healthy lifestyles and life skills. This support includes Walking School Bus, support for Walk Safely to School Day, and fundraising support for school sport and fitness resources. This term P&C have supported the school with the purchase of 16 bikes and helmets to the value of $6000 to start up our annual bike riding program. Providing access to this specific training will ensure our students are not only equipped with important physical skills but will get the most out of the Stage 3 Camp in Dubbo later this year. It is interesting to note that almost 50% of students are currently not confident bike riders. This term we have also continued our commitment to implementing the HWPS Table Tennis Program which will see our team compete in the NSW Primary School’s Table Tennis Competition. Again, the school’s commitment to ensuring broad participation in rich, engaging, accessible healthy life skills and sports is evident. We thank Mr Fung and his team, who have made these initiatives possible.

We value

Quality in all that

we do

We are strong together, better together and more energised together, as week after week demonstrates at Homebush West. Recently we can be proud of the team work demonstrated by our students in participating in the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition and the National Simultaneous Story time, then there’s Year 6 leadership of Peer Support and our debating team who are developing and articulating opinions and improving confidence every day. Finally, we wish our Zone Cross Country competitors well this week.

Each week the Wrapped with Love group comprised of students, parents and members of the community meet to knit squares. These squares are then sewn together to make a beautiful blanket ‘wrap’ which are then sent overseas to people in need. Wraps are also donated within Australia through charities operating to support the homeless, asylum seekers, nursing homes and youth organisations. Through this initiative we not only contribute to our local community but the greater global community. Special thanks to Mrs Prouty, our School Chaplain, who leads this important initiative for our school community. It is so encouraging to witness happy, safe students accessing rich and fulfilling curriculum opportunities every day. What a wonderful school community in which to learn and grow. We really appreciate teachers and office staff and the support and help they gave. Thank you also to all families who sent along money to participate. We hope you loved your unique photos! Students were very enthusiastic about choosing their costumes and props and having their photo taken. They were also very excited about choosing the frame and taking the gift with them. We raised $1,385.73 from this fundraising activity. We now have several items such as the photo printer and toner ready to go for Father’s Day fundraising later this year! The P&C will be financially supporting a great project which will be announced shortly. All money raised by the P&C is used for the benefit of the school and community through the chaplaincy program and other projects the P&C funds.

Peer Support, Keeping Friends Week 2 During Peer Support this week the children will look at qualities their friends may have and the concept that we choose friends based on the qualities we admire in them. They will also explore the skills of friendship, specifically those of cooperating and listening. During the week encourage your child to show they are interested in the person they are talking to by being an active listener.

Debating This semester in debating, Stage 2 and 3 students have been working at perfecting their writing and speaking skills during afternoon debates. Debaters Suhaan, Sandeep, Adhrit and Jocelin competed against Strathfield North PS for their first 2019 local debate. Debater students have since attended Round 1 of the Zone debate against Concord West PS. Students have done a fantastic job of representing Homebush West PS. PSSA Reports Senior Girls Soccer Ms Pashley Junior Girls Soccer Ms Pene Senior Boys Soccer Ms Smith Junior Boys Soccer Mr Penman Senior Mixed Netball – Ms Tuazon Junior Netball – Ms Joseph Senior and Junior Girls Soccer Last Friday both teams had a BYE round so we walked down to Airey Park to make use of this warm, sunny autumn day. We utilised this valuable time to have an extended training session to further develop their skills and technique. We began our training session with dribbling relays with three levels of difficulty. We first started with the team dribbling from one side of the soccer field to the other to improve our ball control and speed. This was followed by dribbling the ball and passing the ball to their team player at the three-quarter mark. We then ended with the players passing the ball to each other down the line and running back to the front (tunnel/captain ball style). After lunch, we introduced a new game to the team called ‘Kings, Queens, and Jacks’. In a 3v3 style mini game, the students were required to play a fierce yet fast game of soccer. After 4 minutes, the winning team would then move “up” to the next level (e.g. Jacks to Queens) and the unsuccessful team of the match would move down and battle their new opposing team. These competitive, fast-paced rounds allowed all students to be actively involved, developing their skills and demonstrating their technique. The team loved it, especially the competitive nature of the game. We then ended our skill development session with a game of soccer (mixed teams). We love any opportunity for the junior and senior teams to learn from and with each other! It was a valuable afternoon of training to set our team up for success! We look forward to next week’s game against Newington PS at Centenary Park! Coach Pashley and Coach Pene

Senior Boys Soccer Last Friday the team notched up their first win of the season against Burwood PS. The scoring was opened early in the first half after some solid teamwork led to a great shot from Ahmet being saved only for Ridhwan to pounce on the spilled ball and slot it away. More great teamwork led to Sebastian rounding the keeper and splitting two defenders for a goal. Fantastic passing and defence allowed us to keep the pressure on and add another goal before the end of the half. We lost our shape in the second half and squandered numerous opportunities but were still able to put on two more goals to end the game at five nil. Ridhwan finished with four but the teamwork and defence that generated the goals, particularly in the first half was outstanding. Well done team. Mr Smith

Junior Boys Soccer Last Friday Homebush West played against Burwood PS at Mason Park. Although this was one of our best games, unfortunately we were not able to bring home a win. We had some strong attacking opportunities, which kept the opposition on their toes. Thank you to Krish and Luka for running the ball up, with Derek on the wing supporting. Our defence and clearance rate this game was at an all-time high, Hugo, Yath and Arjan, were all over the ball this week clearing it away from our goals, stopping a scoring opportunity. The team are continually improving, it’s great to see them consistently on the up. Our training was focussing on passing the ball with space, communication, goal kicking and accuracy. All players are becoming familiar with their positions which is thoroughly improving our game. Mr Penman Senior Mixed Netball Last Friday we played against Homebush PS. Both teams improved a lot in defence but reflected that we need to spread out more and throw the ball quicker. The A Team lost 11 - 4, while the B Team won 7 - 0. Mrs Tuazon was very impressed and gave amazing feedback to all players. Both teams worked hard using their outside arm in defence and driving with the ball and moving the ball around in the shooting circle. The players of the week were Akshath for his great shooting and Jayaditya for some amazing defence and intercepts. Next week, the seniors are looking forward to another great match. Written by: Saanvi and Chinmayee Junior Netball Last week the teams played against Homebush PS, fortunately both teams won! The Junior A team played a fast paced game. In the first 2 minutes Homebush scored a goal, which put us on the back foot. At the next centre pass we worked the ball quickly into the circle and were able to level the score. From then on we were able to steadily defend and covert. This week also saw us use the skills we have been learning in training. Some of these skills were driving into the circle and using your outer arm to defend and attack. Final score for the A team was was 6-1. Well done A’s! Written by Grace The final score for the B team was 6-0. The game had great defence and attack on both sides. Kobina was outstanding this week as Goal Shooter, which saw her awarded player of the game. We hope to have more fun games like this. Well done B’s. We have commenced the School Run4Fun Colour Explosion which is as a major fundraiser next term so we do ask for your support. The more money we raise the more we can provide for the students through vital school projects, in particular Stage 3 Camp and Year 6 Farewell and Graduation.

The School Run4Fun Colour Explosion has been postponed and will now be held on Wednesday 24th July, 2019 (Term 3, Week

1). We do ask that you bring a spare change of clothes to school, most importantly a plain white shirt as the students will be

covered in powder from head to toe. The day’s focus is on fun and fitness with the added benefit of raising funds for our school.

Colour Powder

The colour powder used in our event has been sourced direct from India, the home of Holi Powder. It is made of high quality

corn starch and permitted food colours. It’s non-toxic, biodegradable, skin safe and environmentally friendly. Toxicological Risk

Assessment and ingredient listings can be obtained from the School Office upon request. Students with asthma are advised to

be careful in their decision to participate.

How Does My Child Fundraise?

Students have now received a Sponsorship Form with instructions on how to raise money and order prizes. Students obtain

donations in cash using the Sponsorship Form together with online fundraising. Students should continue to collect money over

The safety and wellbeing of our children is paramount. As parents and carers we can’t always be with our children to advise and protect them.

When out and about, children can be confronted with situations where good decision-making is vital. With this in mind, advising our children with appropriate responses to certain situations will help them avoid trouble and danger.

Here are some simple tips to give your children for when they are out and about.

Protect your child walking home

■ ALWAYS identify safe places on the way home from school.

■ DO NOT stop and talk to people you don’t know. Go straight home or to your intended destination.

■ ALWAYS find a safe place if you feel frightened. These include schools, shops, churches or police/fire/ambulance stations and tell them that you are frightened.

■ NEVER get into a car with someone you don’t know.

Protect your child on public transport

■ NEVER travel in isolated areas. Find crowded carriages, guard’s compartment (marked with a blue light) or at the front of the bus.

■ ALWAYS try to travel in groups of friends if possible.

Protect your child when in public spaces

■ ALWAYS carry a contact number for your parents. (On a card attached to your clothing, written on your arms or in your phone).

■ DO NOT walk away from family or friends without telling them where you are going, when you’ll be back and who you are with.

■ ALWAYS walk away from fights or arguments, unpleasant or aggressive behaviour and take your friends with you.

■ REMEMBER, always tell your parents, carer or teacher if something has happened.
