Thanks to our committed facilitator, School Chaplain Chris Prouty, for leading this community initiative. Zone Carnival Success Thank you to our Athletics Carnival team and congratulations to our students who participated successfully in the recent zone carnival. You were a credit to the school and demonstrated great sports and learner characteristics. The importance of being on time for school Research indicates success in learning is strongly linked to strong participation in school programs which is linked to school attendance. It is very important for children to develop habits of punctuality at an early age, beginning from the time they start school.

Some of the benefits of being on time to school include;

Ensures that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities that happen early in the day when they are most alert.

Helps your child to learn about routines and commitment.

Gives your child time to greet their friends before class. This can reduce the possibility of disruptions in the classroom.

Arriving on time every day supports children to feel strong connections to school and to have a positive view of themselves.

At Homebush West Public School there is on site teacher supervision from 8:30am. We strongly encourage all students to be at school by 8:45am every day in order to be ready to learn and enjoy a successful day. Speech Pathology Week This week is Speech Pathology Week. We acknowledge the work of Naomi Halligan who partners with us at Homebush West to ensure best practice We appreciate her expertise and the deep care she demonstrates for our students and their families.

Senior Girls Soccer Ms Pashley Junior Girls Soccer Ms Pene Senior Boys Soccer Mr Smith Junior Boys Soccer Mr Penman Senior Mixed Netball – Ms Tuazon Junior Netball – Ms Joseph Senior Boys Soccer For our final round of the season we played at Mason Synthetic against Victoria Avenue and the match was a fitting end to our season. The two evenly matched teams tussled early on until the breakthrough came for Victoria Avenue through a well-constructed goal. From the ensuing kick-off we struck back immediately through a series of slick passes between Pravin and Ridhwan. Victoria Avenue hit back with a fantastic strike before we evened up again with a persistent effort resulting in Ridhwan bagging a second. The second half was a tight affair and a draw looked like a fair result as the play went end to end. Victoria Avenue snatched the winner from a corner with only a few minutes left and although we lost, we played one of our better matches of the season. Thanks for a great season, it was amazing to watch the development and improvement throughout the season and the fantastic sense of fair play displayed each week. Mr Smith

Senior Girls Soccer Another smashing day with what I would call perfect soccer weather conditions! Last Friday Homebush West had the opportunity to play a new team in the other division’s pool - Russell Lea. We went into the game not knowing anything about our opponents but what we did know was that we were in form. The field available for us to play on was a bit smaller than our standard field which meant that space was slightly minimised. This was a bit of a worry at first because our game so utilises this space normally. But it was no matter! Our girls came out terribly strong with Sabrina’s first goal resulting from putting pressure on the keeper, causing a fumble and then her follow through kick slotting it well past the goal line! Her second goal followed with a great running break straight to goal with no stammer in her shot! Then her third goal was an absolute whopper! Came running in, one on one with the keeper, both went into tackle the ball but Sabrina came in with way more strength and accuracy causing the ball to go straight to the top left corner of the goal! The Homebush West team were consistently playing well, passing the ball, tackling hard and using what space we had which resulted in providing the opportunities that we took advantage of! Half time came but our girls didn’t want it. No one wanted to come off the field! In the second half Yuuki took charge of the left side and took a long shot from well outside the box! It was stopped by a defender who kicked it back but Yuuki followed it up by returning it with a HUGE tackling kick straight to the back of the net! No one was stopping that one! Koharu and Amani tore up the middle with Koharu scoring not one but two more goals (bringing her total to 7 goals in the last 3 games!). Her goals came from chasing through kicks and very cleverly timed runs. Absolutely beautiful to watch! Claire shone in the backline today by being completely impenetrable and by her gigantic, powerful clearances! Jaw-dropping! What a way to finish a truly successful soccer season with a 7- 0 win! I don’t need to tell you because if you have been reading these match reports each week it is abundantly clear how significantly our team has improved. My only downfall of the season is that it has ended. Coaching these incredible players has been a highlight for me. You are all so inspirational! Thank you for a sensational season. Ms Pashley Junior Boys Soccer On the 23rd of August at Mason Park Homebush West Public School had their first goal and win playing against Victoria Avenue. Our first half had suspense and kept you on the edge of your seat. Homebush West had some superb runs up the field however couldn’t capitalise on the small windows of opportunity. Thankfully our defence skills have been consistent this seasons, never allowing the opposition to score a goal. At half time we had a brief chat about keeping our positions, looking for open spaces and communicating with each other. Our second half was just as intense. Our team capitalised on the open spaces and kept up the chat. Half way through the half, our opportunity arrived. The ball came from the other end after a goal kick and the team worked it up the other end of the field. The team looked for open spaces, and took advantage. Pranav crossed the ball to Luka, and he took his shot however it hit the post. The goal keeper was scrounging around for the ball, while Yath (who was a defender) came running in and out the ball through the goal! We erupted in cheer! Some tears of pride were shed by the coach and players, making it 1-0. But the game wasn’t over. They team had to keep their defence up and they were tested greatly. There were several close calls along the way, yet they kept their minds focused. The final whistle sounded and a sigh of relief was let out. We had won our first game 1-0. It was admirable to see the team keep their sportsmanship till the end. Shaking the opposition’s hands and congratulating them on a good game. I am so proud of how much the team has grown over this season. Their skills, communication and respect for the game and each other has really shown what a good team can do. I’m so proud to have coached such an enthusiastic and motivated team. They never gave up, kept going even when they weren’t feeling their best and they kept their growth mindset through the entire season. Well done team you’ve represented your school proudly week after week. Mr Penman

Junior Girls Soccer Last Friday the Junior Girls Soccer Teams played against Russell Lea PS in our last skill development match of the season! What a way to celebrate the end of the season with the team demonstrating all they have learned and developed over the last two terms. Unfortunately, the Junior As lost 0-2 but the Junior Bs won 2-0. When asked to reflect on the season, the team shared their most memorable moments, what they’ve enjoyed most and what they’ve learned and they’re key takeaways from this year’s Winter PSSA experience. Here are their reflections:

I enjoyed playing with my team all the time. Ellaisha

From the experience, I’m taking away that losing is not a bad thing. Nehaa

My most memorable moment was when I nearly scored a goal. It was so close! Sudharshana

My key takeaway is communication and working as a team is needed to score a goal. Akshika

My most memorable moment was when I saved four goals! Bianca

I enjoyed making new friends. Jogalie

I enjoyed learning from others. Melissa

My most memorable moment was the first time we scored a goal. I felt really happy for the team! Ruby

I enjoyed improving my soccer technique and skills every week. Melanie

My most memorable moment was when I did a really big kick down the field from the goal line. That made me feel happy. Chloe

I enjoyed improving my ability to tackle the ball from my opponent every week. I’m more confident now! Ally

My most memorable moment was when I kicked the ball form midfield nearly straight into the goal! And also when the team compliments each other! Laura

My most memorable moment was when an opponent kicked the ball high and while it was still in the air, I kicked the ball back down the field! Jade

From this experience, my key takeaway is that you need to scan to make a decision to move to the right position/zone on the field. Faith

My most memorable moment was when I played defence and I didn’t let the ball get past me once! Ritika

I enjoyed how strong our team is every week. Ashleigh

My most memorable moment was when I scored four goals in one match! I couldn’t have done it without my team mates supporting me and my coach. Anshu

It’s been a wonderful season coaching the Juniors! Their weekly efforts, commitment to training, their positive attitude; as well as their determination, growth mindset and support towards each other has made this season truly successful. Well done team. I am so extremely proud of each and every one of you and I have loved coaching you all! Until next Winter, keep practising and believing in yourselves.

Senior Mixed Netball Last Friday Homebush West versed Summer Hill Public School and Croyden Park Public School. The A team had an amazing game against Summer Hill, but unfortunately lost to the score 7-11. Today James wasn't here, so Suhaan had to take his place. The B team also had a good game, the score was 6-1, winning them a victory! The players of the week were Chinmayee because of her positive sportsmanship even if the other team scored. Akshath was the B team's player of the week because of his consistent goal scoring. Overall, what a fantastic and enthusiastic finish to the season! Within the enrolment cap, a number of enrolment places (the buffer) must be kept aside for the likely number of local students who will need to enrol during the year. For this reason, a school will not take non-local students once they reach their buffer, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

100-point residential address checkParents planning to enrol their child at a school that is near or at their buffer or cap will be asked to complete the 100-point residential address check to confirm they live within the school’s designated intake area. This means you will need to provide documents to verify your child’s current address. So that schools only seek information relevant to your child’s enrolment, a list of approved documents for the residential address check is available from the school or the department’s website at https://education.nsw.gov.au/policy-library/policies/enrolment-of-students-in-nsw-government-schools.

Selection criteria for non-local enrolmentSibling enrolments are now clearly prioritised (where possible) and selection criteria for non-local enrolment will not include student ability, performance or achievement.

The Enrolment of Students in NSW Government Schools policy is in place to assist schools to meet their obligations under the Education Act 1990 - to ensure that every student has a place at their local school. The policy also communicates to staff and the community a transparent enrolment process.

Why was the enrolment policy revised?Across the state, many communities are changing. Some are growing at rates never seen before. Some schools that used to be able to accept out-of-area enrolments, no longer have the room to do so.The revised policy is designed to support schools to manage all enrolment applications, encourage greater consistency in decision-making and make sure the enrolment choices are clear for parents.

What are the changes? The enrolment capThe enrolment cap is the number of students that can be enrolled at a school based on the school’s permanent accommodation. The enrolment cap tells us whether the school may or may not have the capacity to accept non-local enrolments. It is not a target or limit on the number of local enrolments a school can take. Each school with a local intake area will have a cap set by the department from Term 4 2019.

ContactFor general enquiries contact: 1300 679 332 or email: [email protected] enrolment enquiries, speak to your local school. Find school contact details at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/going-to-a-public-school/finding-a-public-school

I already have a child enrolled as an out-of-area student in a NSW Government school. Can I enrol my other children at that school too? This will depend on the capacity of the school:· If the school is not near its buffer, then siblings should

be able to be enrolled at the school. In fact, siblings of students currently enrolled will be prioritised, where possible, over other non-local enrolment applications.

· If the school is nearing its buffer, then the school will form a non-local enrolment panel. The panel considers non-local enrolment applications when the number of non-local applications received exceeds the number of places available below the buffer. Again, in this instance, siblings of students currently enrolled will be prioritised, where possible, over other non-local enrolment applications.

· If the school is at capacity they will not accept non-local enrolment applications unless there are exceptional circumstances.

I have already accepted an offer for my child to attend a school in 2020 that is not my local school. What happens now? The enrolment will proceed. Non-local enrolments accepted before Term 4 2019 for students starting in 2020 should not be affected.

What is the criteria for enrolment in a school that is not my local school? Schools that are able to accept non-local enrolment applications establish a non-local enrolment selection panel, if demand exceeds the number of places below the school’s buffer. Schools are required to make the selection criteria available to the school community.

My circumstances are challenging and I think this school is best for my child. We live outside the school’s intake area. What should I do?We understand that not everyone’s circumstances are the same, and that there are instances where exceptional circumstances will need to be considered. Your circumstances should be discussed with the principal of your local school who can assist you to negotiate an out-of-area enrolment if there are exceptional and compelling circumstances.

What has not changed?Schools will continue to enrol students who live in their local intake area, regardless of the school’s cap status. There are no changes to enrolment rights of siblings of non-local students. In schools with available places, each enrolment application is considered on its merits, including if siblings currently attend the school. If the school is below capacity, out-of-area applications for siblings of current students will be given enrolment priority.Schools will continue to provide families with support and advice during the enrolment process, including assessment of exceptional and compelling circumstances particularly for vulnerable students and their families.Schools will also continue to apply the policy fairly and consistently using transparent and accountable processes when making decisions around enrolment applications. Parents have a right to appeal to determine whether the stated processes have been applied in a procedurally fair manner.

But what do the changes mean for me?What if my child is already enrolled but we do not live in that school’s intake area?Your child will remain enrolled at the school as the revised policy does not affect students already enrolled in NSW Government schools.

We were in area when my child was enrolled in the school. The department has since changed the school’s boundary and our residence is now out of area. I have other children and I want them all to go to the same school. What are my options? At times it is necessary for the department to make adjustments to a school’s local enrolment intake area. This could mean a family with a child/children already enrolled is then outside the local intake area. When this happens, the family will still be able to enrol siblings together at the school, regardless of whether the school is over the buffer or cap.
