PRINCIPAL’S REPORTIt is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Bush Bulletin Term 3 Edition #1. Again this high quality document ensures that the wonderful achievements of the past weeks are recognised and applauded.

At the end of term 2 the school bid farewell to three valued members of staff. These staff members were in addition to Mr Frank Rodi who retired from the science staff midway through term 2.

Ms Annette Ross has managed our canteen for 20 years and looked after the culinary desires of staff and students and she has chosen to retire. The canteen is not only a source of nourishment it is also a source of profit for the community and with all profits being ploughed back into school resources. We wish her all the best. The canteen is continuing to thrive with Ms Lily Lee assum-ing the role of manager and Ms Kelly Whelan joining the staff.

The school also saw Mr Michael Thomson and Ms Doina Ilea retire from the Creative and Performing Arts faculty. Ms Ilea has taught music with great passion and has inspired many young men to further their own musi-cal dreams. She will be missed from the CAPA staff. Mr Thomson is an art teacher and former student. Mr Thomson has set up the wonderful Duke of Edingburgh scheme and we are very fortunate that he is continuing to lead that program.

The school welcomed a new executive member of staff, Ms Suzana Milovanovic, Head Teacher Teaching and Learning. Ms Milovanovic is a trained English teacher and she will be supporting our rich teaching and learn-

ing program currently being run by Mr Andrew Fairley (and also Ms Annabel Chapman). Ms Milovanovic has taught in the Fairfield area and is also an experienced teacher mentor. As such she will bring great experience in the support of our early career teachers. Ms Milovanovic is very experienced in the teaching of literacy which is greatly valued by the broad school community.

I am thrilled to see the report of year 11 students Wessam Had-id and Christian Iacullo who took the opportunity to represent Homebush at the Strathfield Chamber of Commerce luncheon where they heard the world renowned economist and speaker, Peter Switzer, discuss the global financial crisis and the loom-ing environmental problems of global warming. I am sure you will enjoy reading their report in this bulletin.

Note, also the flyers on the RTA’s decision to mark “Dragon’s Teeth” on the school zones surrounding our school. This will assist road users slow their speed and increase the safety for our students in the vicinity of the school. I continue to be amazed at the large number of cars that drop off or pick up students in unsafe locations, like near or on the car park driveways, or near the bus stop in McKenzie street in the afternoon. There are many places, slightly further away than the front or back gate, but much more safe for your son and other users of the school.

The opening of our newly refurbished science labs was a fantastic occasion. Our local member and great supporter of the school, The Honorable Ms Virginia Judge, along with the School Education Director Ms Angela Lyris, attended this gala event. Ms Judge praised the school for its academic and sport-ing successes but made a strong plea to continue to promote and develop such learning areas as languages and the perform-ing arts. The P&C was also well represented with Vice Presi-dent Ms Simone Burton and the School Council was represent-ed by Ms Joanne Coverdale. The SRC attended and assisted with the function which was chaired by Vice Captain Tom Burton, with Captain Dennis Griffen-Colls and SRC President speaking strongly in support of this state government initiative.

Thanks to all the parents who attended parent teacher evenings in terms 2 and 3 as your support for your sons encourages them to strive for their best. Many students are trying to choose courses for 2011 and again I will say that students should choose those courses that they enjoy, are good at, and that they want for their career plans.

Let us not forget our year 12 students who are doing their Trial HSC and completing major works. We wish you all the very best for your assessments.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL TEACHING & LEARNING

Mr Tim Jurd welcomes Ms Milovanovic to the school.

The happy band of canteen workers welcomes Ms Kelly Whelan to the fold.

Term 3 greets us with a series of significant curriculum events – one is, of course, the Trial HSC. It’s reas-suring to see Year 12 students applying what they’ve learnt in their study skills programs over the course of high school: note taking, mnemonics, practice papers, using the library effectively during study periods. For some, the demands can begin to seem overwhelming. An important strategy is ‘chunking’ – breaking down a large task into more manageable chunks. The feeling of success generated when a chunk is complete is motiva-tion in itself.

Subject selection processes are well underway for Year 8 and Year 10. Parent attendance at our information ses-sions was excellent. The same guiding principle applies to both years: choose subjects that you are interested in and are good at. I encourage students and parents to think carefully about their choices and adhere to the timelines given, as we can’t guarantee that any later changes can be accommodated and these are subjects that they will be doing for TWO years..

BOB (Battle Of the Brains) is one of the many extra-curricular events that our students are involved in. BOB happens at the end of each term and involves 30 enthusi-astic readers (chosen from the Premier’s Reading Chal-lenge participants) to test their knowledge of all things literary, against 30 enthusiastic readers from Birrong Girls. There are two trophies to be won – last term each school earned a trophy. Congratulations to all students involved, including the helpers, and to the staff who organised this wonderful event where students continue to impress us with their detailed knowledge.

Our teachers have participated in a very productive School Development Day at the beginning of this term, undertaking workshops in literacy, ICT skills and student engagement. This knowledge was then put to great use, developing lessons and refining programs for Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10). Visiting classrooms around the school, it was fabulous to see these lessons being put into action.

Thank you to the students, parents and staff who have welcomed me so warmly into my new role as Deputy Principal. Having been at Homebush Boys for 13 years, in a variety of roles, I feel very fortunate to be able to continue to contribute to our school community. Our central school values - striving for excellence, safety, learning and respect - are shown through our actions and our words. It’s reflected in how we speak to each other, how we listen to each other, how we wear our uniform – showing pride in our school. Read the piece included elsewhere in this edition to see a student’s perspective.

To all our students, keep trying, aim high:

“About the only thing that comes to us without effort is old age.” (Gloria Pitzer)

Ms Caitlin Dwyer

Most HSC students studying Modern, Ancient and Extension history attended lectures over several days in Week 10 last term. The lectures were held at Sydney University and were organised by the History Teacher’s Association of NSW.

Presentations revised historical content and provided valuable insights into achieving HSC success. I would like to thank Ms. Caramancion and Mr Doenau for attending the excursions. Selected students from the year 9 History Elective class will be attending NSW Parliament House on August 30. These students will represent the school at the “Close the Gap” conference on Aboriginal reconciliation. Mrs Symonds has been using materi-als provided by the organisers with her class in preparation for this event and her efforts in coordinating this excursion have been appreciated. Mr P. Mr. Thomson, it has been an inspiring experience for us at our school to have you as a teacher for the past nine years but it is with a heavy heart that we see you moving into retirement.

Mr. Thomson is an Englishman and he was a student at Homebush Boys High School from 1962 to 1967.

We are losing a talented, imaginative and artistic teacher. We wish you a relaxing and enjoyable retirement and hope to see you around soon.

Mr. Thomson’s place will be taken by Mr. Letsios, who is yet another imaginative and artistic teacher. We hope to have an excellent time with Mr. Letsios just as we had with Mr. Thomson.

YEAR 12 STUDENT FOLLOWS IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF RUGBY LEAGUE LEGEND

ARTHUR SUMMONS Year 12 student Paul Carter is follow-ing in the footsteps of a former student Arthur Summons when he tours Eu-rope later this year with the Australian Schoolboys Rugby League Team. In an article on Wikipedia it states that “...Summons was educated at the publicly funded selective Homebush Boys High School where he captained the school’s first grade rugby union side. He repre-sented for Combined High Schools”. Arthur represented Australia in both Rugby Union and Rugby League at the senior level touring the British Isles. In 1963 Arthur Summons with Norm Provan were immortalised in one of the most memorable sporting images ever captured in Australia, John O’Gready’s award winning photo ‘The Gladiators’ which later became the model for the NSWRL premiership Winfield Cup tro-phies from 1982 to 1995 and the NRL trophy since 1998.

Paul was chosen as Captain of the New South Wales Combined High Schools Rugby League team that contested the Australian Schoolboys Championships at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast during the June school holidays.

In their first game against Queensland, which NSWCHS lost, Paul was named “Man of the Match” and in the final against Queensland where the result was reversed he was named “Player of the Final”. Following the finals Paul was nominated “Best Player for NSWCHS” and was selected in the Australian Schoolboy Squad.

The players will spend a week at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra in preparation for their tour of England, Wales and France in November/Decem-ber this year. Paul was acknowledged for his success on the school assembly where he was presented with a cheque from the schools Excellence Fund. Paul also plays Water Polo and his ability in League has led to him being contracted to the “Bulldogs”. The school wishes him every success in his up and com-ing tour and his future career in Rugby League.

At a time when Year 12 students are undertaking the most crucial period leading up to their HSC, I can’t stress enough the importance of atten-dance and attempting past HSC exams under exam conditions. This is crucial not only in my Faculty area, English, but also in all other KLAs. A student can improve his HSC results, and subsequently, his ATAR, dramatically in those precious few weeks between the trial HSC and the HSC proper. Attendance is compulsory to all lessons. The English staff will undertake revi-sion programmes and reinforce exam procedures in order for your son to maximize his perfor-mance in the HSC.

Since the middle of last term, there have been numerous achievements and activities in the English Faculty. All activities during English Week were outstanding and they seem to get better every year. Year 7 students saw a highly entertaining play called Hot Pies and Potato Chips; Year 8 watched a wonderful production of My Girragundji at the Riverside Theatre in Parramatta; Year 9 experienced an informative production called Cyber Shots; Year 10 watched a hilarious mixture of Shakespearean plays; and Year 11 were entertained by the widely popular satirist Tug Dumbly in the school hall. Thank you, the parents, for supporting the school in widening your son’s perceptions of the world.

As well, other exciting news includes some excellent results in the various public speaking competitions. A huge thanks, and congratula-tions, to Ms Sahay for her efforts in organizing and supporting the boys.

This year’s English and Writing Competitions, as well as the Year 7 Spelling Competition, were well supported. Unfortunately, I am unable to share results at this point due to the later than normal dates for these competitions this year.

2010 has continued the high involvement in debating, with teams the school fielded in the various competitions. We had, and still have, teams with 6 different coaches. The school has one inter-zone finalists - congratulations to the Year 12 team and their coach, Ms Porteous, and we wish the well in their final. I would like to thank Ms Mirkova, Mr Wills, Ms Quick, Ms McGuinness and Ms Porteous for the time and effort in organising their respective teams and the various debates.

Can I remind you of the importance of reading at home on a regular basis! Your son should be reading for at least 30 minutes per night. All students in years 7 – 9 have a wide reading programme in English which requires regular reading of novels that the students choose.

ENGLISH REPORT

In Term 2 all Drama students from Homebush Boys High school, Mr Koff and Ms Carrasco travelled to Riverside Theatre, Parramatta, to watch the per-formance Norm and Ahmed.

Norm and Ahmed is a text on the HSC text list for Drama.

This play was written in 1968 by Alex Buzo and has been performed by a va-riety of actors. Of interest for our boys was the fact that the character of Ahmed was performed by a former Homebush Boy, Craig Meneaud.

The small audience space allowed the audience to engage with the actors, as if they were observing the actions only metres away.

An extensive Q&A session was held after the performance. It was designed to enhance the students’ understanding of the play’s social and cultural context, plus the techniques used by Buzo and the inspiration behind the play. Several students from Homebush Boys asked questions and Hamish Campbell was fortunate enough to chat personally with Craig Meneaud.

DRAMA EXCURSIONS RIVERSIDE THEATRE

CAMPBELLTOWN ARTS CENTREOn the 1st July, Year 9 Drama trav-elled to the outer reaches of Sydney-Campbelltown-to watch the uplift-ing performance Helena and the Journey of Hello. This was located at the Campbelltown Arts Centre. It was a perfor-mance by the Terrapin Puppet Theatre with an exploration of ‘digital puppetry’, inspired by playing around with mo-bile phones. The Drama students

were amongst 3 other school that were able to watch this fine perfor-mance, one which also incorporated live music and amazing use of props and backdrops.

The students were also able to tour the rest of the arts centre and spend some quality time thinking and chatting by the waterfall in the Japanese gardens.

Their behavior was exemplary, especially considering the constant battle of changing trains and the chill of the Campbelltown: Sam Acga, Mahmoud Ayish, Charlie Brian, Brison Chow, Alex Feofiloff, Thomas Fletcher, Declan Lindsay, Chris Maybury, Ben Mirabito, Cameron Murray, Muhammad Saeed, Mohammad Sartawy, Akhilan-and Singh and Scott Worthington.

On Friday the 18th of June 40 Yr 8 Visual Arts students spent the whole day where they were involved in two workshops at our school. The students involved were selected as being identified as gifted and talented by their Visual Arts teachers. The students were placed in two groups where they were guided and assisted by experienced artists and visual arts teachers. One group used clay as a medium to produce some fantastic ceramic sculpture that was highly imaginative and dem-onstrated some excellent technical skills. Ceramic artist Elsa Jara guided and assisted the students was pleas-antly surprised at the creative abilities of the students, which is evident when you see the students work at the end of the day. The other workshop was led by our new Visual Arts teacher Mr. Tony Letsios who comes to our school as a highly experienced teacher as well as a practicing artist in his own right. The students were given a unique experience in urban/street art where they had to cut stencils and were also shown how to use an airbrush to create their contemporary artworks. At the end of the day the students all agreed it was lots of fun to be creative which was evident that even when the students were told they could have a break for recess they all wanted to continue with their artwork. We will be looking to organize an exhibition of the finished work will be held in the school common room at the beginning term 3.

VISUAL ARTSYEAR 8 GIFTED & TALENTED WORKSHOP

A City on Display: the 17th Biennale of Sydney

On Thursday the 17th of June, Mr. Letsious and Mr. Thomson accompanied year 10 and 11 photography stu-dents by train on an excursion to the Museum of Contem-porary Art in Circular Quay and Cockatoo Island.

Firstly we went to the Museum of Contemporary Art to see the marvelous art and photography exhibition. The theme of the exhibition was the 17th Biennale of Sydney – The Beauty of Distance: Songs of Survival in a Precari-ous Age. We learned how other artists arranged the fig-ures to create a particular composition in their images, as well as the ways they appealed to the senses of the viewer in their artwork.

After seeing that inspiring art and photography exhibition we took a ferry from Circular Quay to Cocka-too Island to explore the various structures and land-scapes in order to take some unique black and white photographs for our assessment task on decay.

Cockatoo Island is a significant site in Australia’s his-tory. From 1839 to 1992, it was an imprisonment site for convicts and became essential to the maritime activity of this country. The island was abandoned until 2002, when the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust was established to undertake preservation and create a unique tourist attrac-tion. Many of the structures on the island are in various states of decay, making them excellent subjects for our assessment task. Some sculptures that featured in the art exhibition “The Beauty of Distance” were also on display at Cockatoo Island.

We then took the ferry back to Circular Quay. On the way Mr. Thomson took more remarkable photographs of land-scapes and scenes. After that we had a fabulous lunch and reached home around 4pm. Year 10 and 11 photography students enjoyed themselves and thought it was a very informative and inspiring day.

On the 9th May, it was Sunday and it was also my metric day. I woke up at 6:30am, then I walked 7 m to the bathroom, turned on the tap and released 1litre of water to wash my face for 1 minute and then I put 3g of toothpaste on my toothbrush. It took me 2.5 minutes to brush my teeth.

After all that, I changed into my swimming shorts and decided to go and swim 20 laps in the pool. The temperature outside was surprisingly low, it was about 5°C. When I entered the building where the pool was, the temperature was approximate-ly 20°C. I quickly did a 5 minute warm up which include 4 laps around the 25m pool, 10 push ups and 2 minute of stretching. With a splash, I was in the pool; the water was about 15°C, which was quite freezing cold in winter. I swam 250m first as a warm up before the real exercise began. After that I swam 750m; 150 butterfly, 150m backstroke, 150m breaststroke and 300m freestyle. After the last lap, I jumped in the 50°C SPA pool and it felt REALLY warm.

It was 8:00am when I got back. After walking 10m to the bathroom, I showered using 10litres of water and10ml of body wash. I then got changed and walked 5m to the living room, I saw my mum lying on the sofa not looking well. She had got a fever; her body temperature was 38°C, which meant I had to do the shopping as there were not enough things. I took $100 and walked 500m to the shopping centre. When I entered Coles, I bought 3litres of orange juice, 3litres of milk, 2kg of potatoes, 500g of sashimi and a bunch of other snacks. I payed the ca-shier $100 and got $16.5 change. Wow! The bags weighed like 7kg, I used all my strength to lift the bags as I wobbled another 500m on my way home.

When there was 245m left, a crazy dog tied to a pole barked suddenly and loudly when I was walking past it. The bark scared the living daylight out of me as I leapt ½ m off my feet. Items in the bags rolled 3m away from me which was the right distance for the ½ m creature. The monster tore a bag of chips into 18 pieces. I was so angry that I pushed the dog, it worked; it kept a distance of 4m from me. I collected the items and put them back in the bags. I ran at a speed of 10km/h to get home.I ran straight in my room and collapsed on the 2.5m bed. What a day!

MY METRIC DAY

Year 7 were treated to a mathematically wonderful, and eye- opening experience on the 29th of July. The boys participated in a number of mathematical activities pre-sented by Mr Peter Wilson from the World of Maths.

Each of the activities presented students with challeng-ing problems that required them to use teamwork to reach a solution. The boys were engaged and fascinated by the hands-on nature of the workshop and received the opportunity to apply their knowledge of mathematics in more practical situations.

When asked what they learnt from the workshop, a student (Shoham Kembhavi, 7H) replied “I learnt that Maths is fun!”

There’s no better way to start a term than being absent from school. For us, it was much more than computer games and Facebook, but meeting new people, learn-ing new things and eating delicious foods. All with the consent of Mr. Jurd himself. We were invites to an economics luncheon, hosted by the Strathfield Cham-ber of Commerce at Crystals Seafood Restaurant, with the guest speaker and a leading economist, Peter Switzer.

Arriving early was an interesting experience. Be-ing alone with Peter Switzer himself allowed us to introduce ourselves on an individual level and conduct a valuable conversation and business connection with one of Australia’s most famous financial commenta-tors.

As the room began to fill with business leaders from around Australia, we were mistaken numerous times for representatives of different financial institutions, ‘No sorry, we’re students from Homebush Boys High School’, our constant response. Although there were many people we desired to meet at the function, there was no better person to sit next to then the Mayor of Strathfield himself, Tony Maroun. After a short con-versation with one of the most important men in the area, the food began to appear on tables.

Peter Switzer began his comical but informative presentation on Australian business and the economy while we devoured the wonders of the sea. He be-gan talking about the Global Financial Crisis and the reasons Australia avoided recession, then moving on to the topic of business improvement. The focus was marketing and how a business needs to stand out of the crowd to be successful. Lateral thinking was also presented as a must to business growth. He provided examples of ways in which successful businesses have thought outside the box and achieved their goals.

After the presentation was finished, desert was served and the raffle, which we had all forgotten about, began. We were lucky enough to be one of the winners and although we weren’t allowed to take home the wine bottle, we were gifted with expensive chocolates instead.

Overall the day turned out to be much better than both of us had anticipated. Establishing future connections, open-ing our minds to the business and economic world and eating a delicious five course meal was the best way to start the new term.

Mobile Muster – Congratulations on all people who participated in the Mobile muster for 2010. Our school successfully collected 10.5kilograms of old mobiles phones, batteries & chargers. These items are non bio-degradable and should not be thrown into landfill. They contain a variety of metals & plastics, including hazard-ous materials which if thrown away could leach into the environment. Over 90% of the materials in mobiles are recyclable and are reused to make new products such as stainless steel, plastic fence posts and jewellery.

Enviro Inspiro – Congratulations on all the SRC boys for their part they played in entering the 2010 Enviro Inspiro Competition. The team this year achieved a High Commendation for their efforts. This year their environmental theme was the Enviro Mafia, which took the theme from the Godfather working for the school environment rather than being involved in crime.

World Tree Day – on Friday 30th July Ms Brown and 30 students will be involved in planting 60 native plants around our school as part of World Tree Day. On this day we will also be planting a Wollemi Pine, this tree is one of the world’s oldest and rarest species. The Wol-lemi pine was up till 10 years ago, thought to be extinct, but a small grove was found by a bushwalker in the Blue Mountains National Park.

National Solar Schools Program – Homebush Boys High School has been successful in gaining a grant for $50,000 to set up a solar electric system on top of the new gymnasium and an extra water storage tank running of the new gymnasium. The 2kW photovoltaic (PV) system will produce on average 7.1kWh/day which will be put back to the state electricity system and our school will be credited for the amount of electricity it gener-ates. Therefore on an annual basis this solar system will generate 2591.5kWh, and the school will be contribut-ing to removing 0.8 cars from our congested roads or planting 14 trees.

Imagine entering a completely different world… without leaving the comfort of your lounge chair. The opportunity awaits you!

The Premiers Reading Challenge is currently running and it will end on the 1st of September. It aims to en-courage the enjoyment of reading and the expansion of literacy. The Challenge is self administered online by students, parents and staff. Students are expected to read 20 books between March and August, 15 reading challenge books and 5 books of their own choice. The challenge is open to all students from Kindergarten to 9.

Last year 37 students undertook the challenge and 7 of those students received a Premiers Reading Chal-lenge Gold Award to recognise the achievement of their fourth completion of the challenge. The school offers many activities for people participating in the challenge. These include participating in the Battle of the Brains, a tournament between Homebush Boys and Birrong Girls.

Two tournaments are held: one at Homebush Boys and one at Birrong Girls. After the tournament participants are treated to a fabulous catered lunch. Another plus to undertake the Premiers Reading Challenge is the opportunity to participate in a trivia/sports afternoon at the end of the year. Again fabulous food awaits the literature lovers. The final incentive to undertake the challenge is the reward of a fabulous certificate and those who complete the challenge for the fourth year receive a Premiers Reading Challenge gold award, which will look great on a resume.

The last Battle of the Brains was a tremendous suc-cess due to the amount of students participating in this event. Mr. Fairley presented this fantastic event and was delighted to see student interest towards reading. Questions were asked about a variety of books including those by Peter Fitzsimon, J.K. Rowl-ing and Louis Lowry. All students gave it a good at-tempt and our school won by 6 points, and afterwards of course, a fabulous lunch was provided to please our tastebuds. Everyone enjoyed the day because we experience a different school atmosphere and learning in a new forum is always a plus.

This year 86 students have undertaken the challenge so far but the PRC Committee and Mrs. Kumaralin-gam want more students to participate in this tre-mendous activity. The PRC Committee consists of Sarankan Suresh-Kumar, Raghav Sareen, Denis Syl-vester, Gagan Jalendrha and Scott Worthington. It’s not too late to sign up for the challenge – if you have any concerns come and talk to the PRC Committee or Mrs. Kumaralingam. “We’re here to help and guide you to a world of reading!”

ABOUT 120 Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Chinese, Tamil, Kore-an and other students from four Sydney schools came together at Strathfield Girls High School last week for the first event of an innovative three-part intercultural program titled “Respect, Understanding and Acceptance”.

Devised by the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies Education Sec-retariat, the program brings together students from diverse cul-tural backgrounds in four geographical clusters across Sydney. The South West Sydney students met for a day of discussions and multimedia performances. Guest speaker Dai Le, Com-munity Relations Manager for the NSW Liberal Party, told the students of her treacherous journey to Australia on a tiny boat escaping Vietnam. She stressed the importance of building bridges between the diverse cultures which call this country home. NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff said the program encourages the students “to respect each others’ differ-ences and to have the guts to speak out when you see someone being isolated, marginalised or discriminated against.” The second event of the program will be held at the Sydney Jewish Museum in August, focusing on where racism can lead, with speakers including survivors of the Holocaust, the Cam-bodian genocide and the Stolen Generations. The third event will be held at Emanuel School in October and will feature interactive sessions with Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Aboriginal, Cambodian and other speakers.

STUDENTS MEET FOR INTERCULTURAL EXPERIENCE Homebush Boys students Roberto Speranza, Mitchell

Davidson and Andrew Depta recently represented the Sydney North Region at the CHS Football Champion-ships held in Port Macquarie. The carnival consists of boys from all over NSW ranging from the North Coast, South Coast, Western NSW and the Riverina. The three day carnival is held as a selection trial for the CHS Football squads and has had players such as Mark Schwarzer, Brett Emerton and Jason Culina represent their regions in previous carnivals.

Sydney North went through the whole tournament undefeated as they topped their group after the first two days of competition. They went on to beat Sydney East in the Semi- Final 1-0 and defeat Sydney South West 2-1 in the final. Mitchell Davidson scored the first goal in the final when he calmly finished a great team move. The victory was unexpected as Sydney South West were the favourites to win the carnival but great team spirit got the Sydney North Boys across the line.

Mitchell had a very successful tournament scoring two goals and was selected in the CHS 1st’s squad. Andrew Depta was voted as the Sydney North MVP and was chosen as the CHS 2nd’s goalkeeper. Roberto Speranza demonstrated great leadership skills throughout the whole tournament as captain of the Sydney North team and was placed in the CHS shadow squad. Mr. Belgre the Homebush Boys 1st grade Football coach was also representing Sydney North at the carnival as the Man-ager of the team and must also be congratulated on his fine efforts and support of the boys.

HBHS WIN STATE CARNIVAL

OVERSEAS TRAVELIf students require leave to travel overseas parents must request approval for leave in writing, from the Principal.

The DET policy does not encourage student leave during the term. The policy states,

“Parents and carers are encouraged not to with-draw their children from school for family holi-days. If this is necessary parents should discuss these absences with the principal and may be requested to apply for a Certificate of Exemption from attendance at school. This will ensure that these absences are not permanently recorded as unjustified.”

• For approval the Principal requires:• Date of and purpose for travel• Copy of return ticket and/or trip itinerary• Evidence that the Year Adviser and Classroom

teachers have been consulted regarding les-sons and pending assessments.

• Leave greater than 15 days requires an ap-plication for a Certificate of Exemption and these applications may need to be referred to Regional Director.

Local Homebush Boys High School student Jason Luo has won the first prize of a Toyota Yaris in the Rotary Club of Burwood’s Community Chest Raffle. The Rotary Club of Burwood organizes these “Monster Raffles” twice a year to help local schools and a vast range of community, sport and service bodies to raise funds for their chosen causes. Jason was stunned to hear of his good fortune and his parents were delighted.

The project for Year 12 students at Homebush Boys was to raise funds to enable young children in Uganda, who are from families with HIV/AIDS and/or Tuberculosis, to attend school. Year 12 first supported the Kampala organisation Kawempe Home Care in 2008 when Year 12 students were approached to develop the website. Following the launch of the website at Homebush Boys High the Year 12 students felt that they wanted to do more and so raised enough money to sponsor twelve students to attend school. The Year 12 students of 2009 wanted to enable the students to continue their education and so approached the Rotary Club of Burwood to be part of their Community Chest Raffle. As a result the students were able to assist the twelve students and add an-other three young people.

This year students were able to raise enough funds to provide an-other years education for the fifteen students and add another one primary student. Students were encouraged to sell raffle books with the opportunity of winning an iPod Nano, Case, charger and iTunes voucher, and the seller of the most books received a signed framed Photograph of the 2009 Penrith Panthers.

Ashvin Ashok one of the Year 12 student organizers stated “that this was a great effort from students, staff, parents and the local community to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Through education it is hoped that the future life of these students will be enhanced” Ashvin also threw out the challenge to Year 12 stu-dents in 2011 to continue their support of these young people.

There was plenty of competition for the prize of the framed signed photograph of the 2009 Penrith Panthers Rugby League team with the winner Nidhim Thampy selling a remarkable 15 books. Ali El Kheir sold 10 books. Anthony Chau and Kieren Tran are keen supporters of the Penrith Panthers who have kindly presented personally signed photographs of their favourite players to them.

The following students were awarded “Community Service Awards” for selling two or more books:-Nidhin Thampy, Ali El Kheir, Anthony Chau, Kieren Tran, Srivinas Byreddy, Shivayan Saravanapavananthan, Jason Ou, Arivindraan Selverajoo, Joshua Shanthikumar, Michael Campisi, Amin Chami , Daniel Morgan, Shivayan Saravanaparamanthan, Dhananjay Pandya, Trey Chemma, Zac McCowage, Dennis Griffin-Colls, Sam Zhang, Matthew Truong, Phillip Zhang, Si-mon Kumar

Homebush Boys High is a proud member of the Austra-lian Red Cross ‘Club Red’ and participates in the NSW/ACT Vampire shield.

Recently Chris Chilton the Community Relations Officer from Parramatta visited the school to present a certificate in the 2009-10 Vampire Shield Competition, to Year 11 Blood donations coordinator, Erkan Altun. Homebush finished second in the region but more importantly the 146 donations helped 438 people.

Chris told the school assembly that “One in three people will require blood in their lifetime but currently only one in 30 people give blood and that every week 26,000 blood donations are needed around Australia to help people including those with cancer, undergoing surgery, burns victims, mums-to-be and premature babies.” The compe-tition for the 2010-11 Vampire Shield starts now and Year 12 student Jack Barrett will be coordinating 80 Year 12 students to donate blood during the last two weeks of this term.

The Grand Final washout failed to dampen the spirits of the Homebush Boys 13’s Rugby team who completed the season as undefeated co-premiers. Their Grand Final op-ponents were to be Ashfield Boys, who they had defeated 42-10 during the premiership rounds. The teams compete in the North West Metropolitan Zone which included semi-finalists Randwick Boys and Asquith Boys. The remainder of the competition was made up with Epping, Normanhurst and North Sydney Boys High Schools. The team was lead by robust forwards Kirk-Stephen Tuivaii and Nicholas Fletcher. The strong running pair set a platform for Tony Lee, Vincent Christie and Stephano Totitis to be creative. Luke Potoru, Craig Miller, Aden Clarkson and Rami Eldrick provided a solid base for the scrum to control possession. Breakaways, Martin Perkins, Michael Napoli and Luke Mansfield scavenged well at the breakdown to steal valuable possession. The speedy and talented backline scored a bagful of trys. Koheleti Vaitaiki, Taniela Moeakiola and Gus Tabikh guided the backline with David Sun, Tarek Zraika, Youseff Iqbal, Amin Chami and Dylan Fuller scoring on many occasions. Utility players, Nabil Bardouh, Kayin Chan, Billal ElSayed, Joshua Evans, Ahmad Kaddour and Liam Peters added thrust and energy to the team each time they took the field. Custodian fullback, Angus Armstrong made valuable ground each time he fielded the ball. He possessed a long kicking game and was safe under the high ball. For several team members this was their second successive premiership of great success. The season will be remem-bered as one where our skill level improved and our knowledge of the Sydney Rail System was outstanding.

UNDEFEATED CO-PREMIERS

It was a season that didn’t really happen. Washout after washout meant that we seemed to rarely take the field and even missed out on playing in the final for both teams. This said, it was a very fun season.

Our squad was made up of a very large group of Year 12 students with some very worthy additions from years 10 and 11. It was tremendous to see such a close group of mates show such enthusiasm for the game and I’m sure that they’ll have very fond memories when they look back on their last season of sport at Homebush.

This group of mates could also play. We were enthusias-tic, passionate, skilful and exciting to watch. Some of the passing moves witnessed from the sideline were terrific and it was great to see how much fun the teams had.

3RD & 4TH GRADE FOOTBALL

Word of the talent in the squad obviously spread around the school and we had to be constantly on our guard against the many talent scouts who often attempted to poach players to player higher grades.

In fact, it was common to see players from higher grades at our wet weather training sessions at-tempting to pick up the finer points of the games or learn a new, exciting move that we had perfected. The boys should all be proud of a tremendous sea-son (we made the grand final in both grades) and the way they played the game.

A special mention should also go to our fantastic manager Colin Tse. He was exceptionally organ-ised and showed great leadership skills in helping out the team. Thanks also to Mr Belgre for organis-ing referees for all home fixtures. This certainly made coaching a lot easier and enjoyable.

Mr Fairley and Mr Wilson

This winter season has been an outstanding perfor-mance by this team. This team’s history has been a slow one, with one win last season and several losses and draws in the past.

With the strong leadership of Zaheer Ebrahim, this team of Year 7-9s have made a great impact on the competition, winning almost fifty percent of the their games. The highlights of the season were the wins over Epping Boys, our close rivals. Our ad-venturous goalkeeper Panayioti kept several goals out all season, supported by Matthew Yau and Vipul Lal. We were never short of substitutes like Piratheepaan Thirunamam, Jathurson Subachan-dran and James Cai. Manager Don Washington’s checking of equipment allowed all players such as Jun Xin Kha and Alex aka Todd-man Flynn to be prepared to play. Dilawar Gill’s steady hand in the D and the constant running by Fergus Knox, Zac Anderson-Foster, Liam Talbot and Suresh Tharma-linkam created the ‘W’ attack. One glove-wearing Grant Choi was our strongest hitter of the ball and was aided in defending by Harry Watterson. Finally it was Geoffrey Ta and Zaheer Ebrahim’s experi-ence that paved the way to the fantastic sporting spirit seen in the team.

This success led the team into the semi-finals where we met the Homebush Boys A team and were defeated. Despite this, the ‘Groovy Cats’ remained upbeat and enjoyed their final game of the season.

Congratulations Junior Hockey Bs’ and see you next season.

201020 Homebush Boys ‘Old Boy’, Giorgio Speranza completed his

HSC in 2008. Over the past two years he has pursued his dual goals of tertiary studies and a professional football career.

Giorgio represented the First XI Football over three seasons at Homebush Boys collecting many premierships and awards as he progressed through the age divisions.

The 2010 season saw him play 22 First Grade games in his first season with Marconi. Giorgio achieved a major goal when he signed with Sydney to play in the A-League in the forthcoming season. He has played several trial games as current premiers, Sydney, prepare for the 2010/2011 season.

Speranza joins a host of other ‘Old Boys’ pursuing careers in professional sport. Phillip Hughes played several test matches as an opening test batsman in the 2009/2010 season. Mitchell Starc played his second season as a medium paced bowler with the New South Wales Sheffield Shield team while former Wal-laby Rodney Blake will be playing with the Melbourne fran-chise in the Super 16s Rugby. Nathan Massey will continue his Rugby League career after signing with Canberra for the 2011 season. Current Australian School Boys Rugby League player, Paul Carter, will continue his career with the Bulldogs.

Sports Coordinator Ron Tedford said: “All of these former students contributed enormously while at school. They are fine young men and have been outstanding members of our school community. We wish them well in their professional sporting endeavours”.

LOCAL IN THE BIG TIME

Giorgio shows his form on the field.

What is the importance of our school name?

There are many reasons why Homebush Boys is known to be a highly respected school among the streets of Sydney. Our achievements in our school curriculum and in athletic/sporting achievements together make our school great.

But it mainly comes down to one thing that really shows how great our school is: our ambassadors and how they represent the school, being good citizens and members of the public, wearing our uniform with pride, not just on school grounds but also out of school. Every student has a role to play in being an ambassador of our school.

Each year group has a number of students to represent them on the Student Representative Council. These young men are the leaders of our school. Each and every move they take on and off the school grounds reflects what type of school we are; it is especially these people that show everyone who we are and what we’re about.

It is not only the SRC who are our ambassadors - people in the Drum Corps are ambassadors of our school and even students representing our school in sport are ambassadors of the school, but most importantly YOU are an ambassador of our school. Wearing the Home-bush Boys uniform is like saying to the public, ‘I go to a school of greatness’. That is why it is essential to always be doing your best while wearing your uniform.

I believe one good thing about our school is that most students don’t need to be told how to act out in the public while representing our school. Most students automatically know to do the right and responsible thing which gives our school a great name. An example of this is something I witnessed myself. I was on a train home and a man had left the train, leaving his wallet behind on the seat. A student decided to go and pick the wallet up, run out of the train while the doors were closing to give it to the man. He wasn’t supposed to get off at that stop, but he was doing the right thing and giving the wallet back to the man.

This is the type of thing that gives our school a great name and reputation. This is the type of thing YOU should think about next time you’re representing your school. Always make a good impression and do the right thing. Next time you’re in the public eye representing our school, think to yourself, I’m here to do the school proud and show everyone how much of a great school Homebush Boys really is.

Winter SportThe 2010 Winter Sports Season reached its conclusion with Homebush once again performing extremely well in the North West Metropolitan Zone Competition which is comprised of seven boys high schools (Ashfield, Asquith, Epping, Homebush, Normanhurst, North Sydney & Randwick). We finished equal first with Epping as the Champion Winter School.

We made it into 30 semi-finals (only missed out on 3) and were meant to contest 17 finals, but wet weather made it impossible to play many of them. We ended up being co-premiers in most of those. The Premier-ship/co-Premiership winning teams (12 in all) were: 1st, 3rd & 4th Grade Football, 13A & B, 14A & 14B, 15A & 15B Football, Senior Hockey, Senior Lawn Bowls, 13’s & 15’s Rugby.

40km/h school zones

The 40km/h school zone slows traffic in the vicinity of the school.

Most 40km/h school zones operate between 8am and 9:30am and from 2:30pm till 4pm. The 40km/h school zone speed limit must be observed even if school children cannot be seen.

A 40km/h school zone operates on all gazetted school days including staff development days (pupil free days).

While some schools may operate on different term dates, school zone speed limits MUST be adhered to during NSW Government determined school terms.

Gazetted school term dates for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 are listed below.

Gazetted school term dates can be found on the RTA website and

the websites of the NSW Board of Studies and the NSW Department of Education and Training.

Western Division

A small number of schools in the Western Division of NSW commence the school year one week later than schools in the remainder of the state.

Non-standard 40km/h school zone times

There are a small number of non-standard school zone times in NSW. Red signs at these schools display the non-standard times which apply.

The minimum penalty for speeding in an operating 40km/h school zone is a $141 fine and the loss of 2* demerit points.

Dragon's teeth road markings

To increase motorists’ awareness of 40km/h school zones, triangular dragon’s teeth road markings will indicate that the vehicle is entering a school zone.
