MOBILIZING ONTARIO’S EXCELLENCE IN BRAIN RESEARCH

The National Academy of Sciences in the United States recognizes the crucial importance of collaboration in the

field of neuroscience. Their 2008 Workshop Report – From Molecules to Minds – describes the importance of

    collaboration.

“Recognizing that neuroscience is not, of course, really a single field is important. Rather it is a multidisciplinary

enterprise including diverse fields of biology, psychology, neurology, chemistry, mathematics, physics,

engineering, computer science and more. If scientists within neuroscience and related disciplines could unite

around a small set of goals, the opportunity for advancing our understanding of brain and mental function

    would be huge.”

The Ontario Brain Institute is cultivating this multidisciplinary collaboration. Its goal is to improve brain health.

To do this we created research programs called "Integrated Discovery Programs" that bring together scientists,

clinicians, industry representatives and patient advocacy groups from across Ontario. We believe this approach

will help to foster the kind of fresh thinking that takes breakthroughs in the lab and turns them into ground-

breaking outcomes for patients and families.

    OUR INTEGRATED DISCOVERY PROGRAMS

We call it "Integrated Discovery" because:

it gathers together all the researchers and clinical sites dealing with a specific disease, for example,

    intractable epilepsy.

it addresses disorders that represent a significant burden to Ontarians, their families and Ontario’s society

and economy, by engaging clinicians and basic scientists.

it mobilizes researchers skilled in all the relevant tools and platforms required to understand the causes

and treatments of a disease, to enable the fullest understanding of the disease mechanisms.

Integrated Discovery enables researchers in one disorder area to apply their discoveries and findings to

other disorders, because imaging and clinical data are gathered and kept in a common format. This lets

researchers pursue questions and hypotheses across disorders to discover common mechanisms that may

    have unexpected explanatory power

    Our Programs

Our research programs, called "Integrated Discovery Programs", have five underlying principles. The research

    must:

rank as excellent on an international stage

    focus on the patient

integrate across Ontario and across disciplines

    involve standardized assessments

    have a translational thrust

A Renewed Vision for Education in Ontario

Achieving Excellence: A Renewed Vision for Education in Ontario (PDF, 1.42 MB)

Vibrant communities and a prosperous society are built on thefoundation of a strong education system. Today, Ontario's publiclyfunded education system – acknowledged as one of the best in theworld – partners with parents, guardians and communities todevelop graduates who are personally successful, economicallyproductive and actively engaged citizens. We now have more highschool graduates than ever before, and more students are meetingthe high provincial academic standards than were a decade ago.Our graduates are also entering a world that is more competitive, globally connected and technologically engaged than in any otherperiod in history. With a track record of success that we can buildon, and with the opportunities available in a more interconnectedworld, the time has come for us to aim even higher.

That is why in fall 2013, individuals and organizations across the province came together to consider and discussthe skills and knowledge Ontario learners will need in the future. The government received input fromrepresentatives within the education system, including parents and students, teachers, support staff and school andsystem leaders, as well as input from individuals and groups outside the education sector, including businesses andnon-profit organizations. Achieving Excellence is the result of their feedback.

    Mission Statement

Ontario is committed to the success and well-being of every student and child. Learners in the province's educationsystem will develop the knowledge, skills and characteristics that will lead them to become personally successful, economically productive and actively engaged citizens.

Ontario will cultivate and continuously develop a high-quality teaching profession and strong leadership at all levelsof the system. Our education system will be characterized by high expectations and success for all. It will beresponsive, high quality, accessible and integrated from early learning and child care to adult education.

Together, we will build on past achievements and move forward with ambitious goals.

Our Success in Education – Now and in the Future

As Ontario embarks on a renewed vision of success for all learners, the province will build on a solid foundation. Adecade ago, only 54 per cent of children in grades 3 and 6 met provincial standards in literacy and numeracy. Thatnumber has grown significantly, and today 71 per cent of grade 3 and 6 students are achieving our high provincial

standards.1 In addition, only 68 per cent of students were graduating from high school a decade ago. Now, 83 percent of students are graduating. That means there are an additional 138,000 high school graduates in Ontariobecause of the education reforms of the past 10 years.

1 Ontario's provincial standard is equivalent to a "B" grade.

Our renewed vision for education includes the valuable insights and contributions of many individuals andorganizations, including representatives from the education, business, research and innovation, not-for-profit,municipal, multicultural, French language and Aboriginal communities. Time and again, our partners highlighted theinnovation and creativity in teaching and learning that is already taking place in Ontario's classrooms. Spreadingthis approach across the entire education system will only be possible with the leadership and commitment ofeducators and the involvement of our many community partners, especially our learners and their families.

We know that change is never easy, and realizing the goals set out in Achieving Excellence will require thecontinued commitment of all of our partners. However, the evidence of the past decade demonstrates that oureducation system is capable of making real, positive change. We know that in order to build a better system weneed to value the work of all education professionals – early childhood educators, teachers, support staff, schooland system leaders and administrators. We also know that policy decisions and the allocation of resources have tobe guided by evidence and research. It is through these principles that we have seen success in the past, and theseprinciples will continue to guide us in the future as we develop more rigorous, relevant and innovative approachesto learning.

  • Achieving Excellence: A Renewed Vision for Education in Ontario

    http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/about/excellent.html?platform=hootsuite[2016/02/11 19:29:36]

120,000 teachers, and 2.2 million students, is among the world's highest-performingschool systems. It consistently achieves top-quartile mathematics scores and top-decile reading scores in PISA.”– McKinsey & Company, How the World's Most Improved School Systems KeepGetting Better (2010). p. 47

    Defining Our Renewed Goals

Achieving Excellence builds on the education system's three current priorities: increasing student achievement, closing gaps in student achievement and increasing public confidence in publicly funded education. It encompassesthese goals and reaches deeper and broader, raising expectations both for the system and for the potential of ourchildren and students.

Our renewed goals for education are:

Achieving Excellence: Children and students of all ages will achieve high levels of academic performance, acquire valuable skills and demonstrate good citizenship. Educators will be supported in learning continuouslyand will be recognized as among the best in the world.

Ensuring Equity: All children and students will be inspired to reach their full potential, with access to richlearning experiences that begin at birth and continue into adulthood.

Promoting Well-Being: All children and students will develop enhanced mental and physical health, apositive sense of self and belonging, and the skills to make positive choices.

Enhancing Public Confidence: Ontarians will continue to have confidence in a publicly funded educationsystem that helps develop new generations of confident, capable and caring citizens.

These four goals are interconnected – success in one contributes to success in the others. Our progress over thelast 10 years tells us that when educators, students, parents and guardians, and our many other partners focus ona small number of clearly defined goals, those goals can be achieved.

    Conclusion

The world is changing rapidly. That is why Achieving Excellence challenges the education sector in Ontario totransform to meet the expectations of today and build the vibrant, prosperous province of tomorrow. Through thisrenewed vision, Ontario is setting its sights on a comprehensive and continuous education system that supportschildren all the way from birth to adulthood. It will be a system that recognizes well-being as an instrumental factorin students' academic success, and promotes greater equity to ensure that all students can be their best.

This is an exciting and inspiring time for education in Ontario. Our past accomplishments have built a strongfoundation for future success. We have so much to be proud of, and now is the time to aspire to even greateraccomplishments for all of our learners.

By raising expectations for what our education system can accomplish, Achieving Excellence can help uncover anddevelop the potential of all learners. It will reveal learner's hidden gifts and spark new passions for future careers. We can develop compassionate and actively engaged citizens who graduate high school equipped for thetechnology-driven, globalized world. They will be well-rounded individuals who have not only strong basic skills butalso the critical thinking skills, imagination and resilience to excel in – and create – the new jobs of tomorrow.

This renewed vision for the future of education in Ontario sets ambitious goals. We know these goals are achievablebecause we have proved over the past decade that by working together with a common purpose we can help ourstudents reach new heights of success. At the core of Achieving Excellence is a commitment to collaborative, continuous learning among educators, leaders and government. Combined with broad partnerships with families, communities and businesses, all working together, we can create a system that is even more accessible, integratedand responsive – one that will give our children the knowledge and skills they need to succeed and the confidenceto embrace the challenges of the future.

By working together, we can make Achieving Excellence a reality. We can give all of our children the opportunity toreach their potential. We can support their success inside and outside of the classroom. And we can build a betterprovince for all Ontarians.

    Northern Psychiatric Outreach Program @CAMH

The Northern Psychiatric Outreach Program at CAMH (NPOP-C) is committed to providingclinical service, education, and support of the highest quality to communities throughoutOntario, but in particular those communities which are rural, remote, or are consideredunder-serviced in terms of mental health care. We will continually strive towardmultidisciplinary, contextually relevant, community-oriented service and education.

CONSULTANT SERVICESThe NPOP-C evolved from a 1993 Underserviced Area Program Committee. What beganearly in 1994 with consultation service to Kenora, Ontario, expanded in 1995 to include thesites of Parry Sound, Peterborough, Sault Ste. Marie, Sioux Lookout and Timmins, Ontario. The NPOP-C has continued to expand with over seventy faculty consultants, and servescommunities throughout Ontario including Atikokan, Baffin Island, Elora, Fort William,Kenora, New Liskeard, North Bay, Parry Sound, Sault St. Marie, Sioux Lookout, Surbury,Thunder Bay, Timmins, and Wawa.

In addition, NPOP-C staff and consultants participate in the delivery of clinical andeducational telemedicine services from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH)to sites across Ontario, with priority given to Northern sites. This allows NPOP-C tocomplement fly-in/drive-in services offered to our partner communities as well as provideneeded psychiatric consultations to more remote sites not served by visiting physicians.Connectivity and clinician fees for telemedicine are provided by the Ontario TelemedicineNetwork (OTN).*

EDUCATIONThe OTN infrastructure can be used to link residents completing Royal College accreditedcore rotations in North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay to seminars and supervisionfrom CAMH and other University of Toronto-affilliated teaching hospitals. ContinuingEducation (CE) seminars and presentations by CAMH faculty are also being provided to avariety of remote sites within Ontario through the OTN connection.

NPOP-C electives are available in Campbellford, Cobourg, Elora, Kenora, New Liskeard,Parry Sound, Peterborough, Sault Ste. Marie, Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, Timmins,Uxbridge, and Wawa.
