STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Jesus returns to heaven, apparently leaving us behind, but with the promise of the Spirit, which we will celebrate next Sunday at Pente-cost. However, the bottom line is this, and it is awesome – WE are the real presence of Jesus among God’s people. WE are stewards of his real presence.

The first reading has a charge to the disciples – and by extension through the Church for two millen-nia – to us. In the Acts of the Apostles Jesus tells the apostles, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Not many of us have given witness to Jesus in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria; however, some of us might consider Gainesville, Fl. to be the end of the Earth! Do we give witness to our faith in Jesus here where we live, work, and study day in and day out? As St. Francis is attributed as saying, “Preach the gospel, and if necessary, use words.” We don’t have to stand on street corners or the Plaza of the Americas with a bull horn and big signs. Do our everyday interpersonal actions reveal the love and peace of Jesus in us? We can witness to our parish faith community and the student center through serving as liturgical min-isters. Please see the parish web page: www.catholicgators.org/ministries or call the office for information.

Through our baptism, communion, and confirmation we are filled with the grace of God, the pres-ence of Jesus, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Let us live as stewards of God’s presence in his creation and among his children.

From the Office for Vocations

May 8, 2016 - Ascension of the Lord

Jesus promised his disciples that they would be clothed in power from God. As a follower of Jesus, you are also given that same promise. Pray for the grace to be a faithful witness. (Luke 24:46-53). If you have a question about a vocation to the priesthood

or religious life, contact Father David Ruchinski, Vo-cation Director, at (904) 262-3200 ext. 101, or email

[email protected].

From the Justice and Peace Commission

“Look about you with Christ’s eyes, listen with his ears, feel and think with his heart and mind. Are you ready to give all as he did for truth and justice? We must respond with a renewed social action that stems from the universal love that knows no bounds, ensuring that our works of mercy and justice become hope in action for others.”

- Pope Benedict XVI, Addressing Young People and Seminarians, 19 April 2008
