Reading Start practising your spellings! Vocabulary Activity: Before to page 18 please complete vocab on pg. 3.
Reading Fill in your reading log. Comprehension Activity: Re-read to page 18 then answer inference questions on pg. 7.
Reading Skill: Using page 13/14 of the book, draw Hogarth’s father’s emotions and write his thoughts on pg. 13.
Reading SPaG Activity: Spelling test - dictation and correction (page 17 and 18). Suffix/Prefix worksheet (pg. 19)

Writing Task: Read chapter 2 to page 16, line ‘So what did they do?’ Role-play – pretend you are one of the villagers or farmers in the story. How would you feel if you were told the Iron Man was back? Task: Using page 4, draw your character in the middle box. Around the outside, I would like you to scribe your character’s emotions and feelings about the appearance of the Iron Man. Also think about what your character thinks should be done with the Iron Man.
Writing Task: What would you say to your parents if you wanted the next new toy? You would have to be very persuasive. Task 1: (pg,8) Have a go at matching the persuasive techniques on the left to the examples on the right. Task 2: Read Extract 1 (pg.9) and try using the key at the bottom, highlight the persuasive features in the text. Task 3: (Pg.10) Write the examples from the top grid, into the correct place on the bottom grid. Then make up your own!

I would like you to think about how different characters would respond to the news of the Iron Man. If you were Hogarth, would you want to hurt the Iron Man, or save him? Task: (pg. 14) Circle whether each character is for or against destroying the Iron Man and then explain how/what they would do with him?
Writing Task: Today, you will get to plan your speech for Hogarth’s Town Council Debate. Choose a character: 1 – Hogarth and his family. 2 – A group of farmers. 3 – Members of the NOPDWT (The National Organisation of the Prevention of the Destruction of Wild Things) 4 – The local police force. 5 – A university teacher with a specialist in Alien Life. Task: (Pg 20) Plan and then write your speech to the council.

Science:
This week we are investigating liquids! Have a look at the poster I have added to your class website page, called ‘Year 3 – Science’ for some experiments you could do: - mixing oil and waterfloating/sinking (density jar)- filtering- making water bend- colourful water- creating a water wall – howtricky can you make it?
Density Jar Experiment: You need to think scientifically! Scientific skills: carefully observe, gather evidence, ask questions. You need to: plan a fair test, make comparisons, spot patterns. Questions: Do the objects float or sink in the water? Can you find anything that will sink in the oil but float in the water? You will need to record your observations: photos, videos, drawings, labelled diagrams. Don’t forget to share your conclusions on PM. You could do a Science show to demonstrate your experiment to your family and resent your findings!
- Mrs Tinley
Art and Design:
Friday 8th June is World Oceans Day which raises awareness of the importance of protecting and restoring the world’s oceans and the sea life that live within it. This week I would like you to create an underwater diorama using a cardboard box. KS2: There are 5 layers within an ocean. Can you label them on your diorama? I would love to see them once completed on Purple Mash! Here are some great examples to inspire you:
- Mrs Painter
P.S.H.E:
Discussion Time – Children are to discuss the title – Being Me in my World. What do they think this means? Answers will vary depending on the age of the child. On flipchart/paper draw the world. As children give their answers annotate the world. Ask children to suggest what they think is important in their world, giving reasons why they are important to them.
Activity – Positives This activity can be completed as a family/in groups or as a whole class. Each child/person decorates and personalise around the edge of an A4 piece of paper. They then pass their page around the family/class/group for everybody to write a positive comment about them on their page. These pages can then be made into a family/group/class book or can be kept separately.
- Mrs Butler
Forest School:
Cloud watching.
Is it a dog? Is it a rabbit? Is it a king sitting on his throne, or a monkey eating a banana?
Cloud watching is a fun thing for children and adults. Find a comfy spot, blanket or chair and lie down looking up at the clouds, use your imagination to find shapes and pictures “hidden” in the clouds and point them out to each other. You can even make up stories about what you see. Then when you go back in you could keep the cloud watching fun going with painting the clouds you have seen.

WALT: discuss words that capture their interest and imagination.
The focus of your comprehension questions this week is on Inferring information from the text, I
would like you to hunt for clues in the text which help the reader understand how someone might
be feeling or why something is happening.
The Iron Man by Ted Hughes Chapter 2
Remember to write your answers in full sentences.
Looking Questions 1) Look at page 14.
It says: Hogarth’s father slowed… Why did he do this? Tick two.
He was happy and leisurely driving.
He was old and had to slow down.
He was curious why there were lights in the tree.
He was scared of the Iron Man.
Clue Questions 2) What clues are there on page 15 and 16, that the farmers were angry?
Find three.
Thinking Questions 3) Day after day, the farmers visited the hole they had dug to trap the Iron Man.
Imagine you are one of the farmers. How would you feel? Explain why and giveevidence from the text to back up your thoughts.

WALT: annotate persuasive features in a text,
Read through this persuasive extract. Using the key at the bottom of the page, colour
the persuasive techniques used in the text. Think about why the author has chosen to
use these techniques. What is the purpose of this text?
How many of you, like me, have done your bit for the environment
diligently, but found yourself in the situation where you are forced to
throw recyclable products into the non-recyclable bin, because you have
simply run out of space in your recycling bin?
More than 77% of consumers questioned said that they were irritated by
the amount of wasteful packaging they had to dispose of, while 52% of
shoppers try to avoid buying over-packaged goods.
Why then do supermarkets insist on continuing this pointless practice?
Since when has an apple pie been such a perishable product that it
requires four layers of packaging to protect it? Last night, fancying one
such sweet pie, I made the mistake of popping to the shops and buying a
box of pastries by a well-known brand. By the time I had helped my poor
apple pie from its foil, plastic, polythene and cardboard prison, I had lost
all appetite for the thing. Furthermore, two of the offending ‘protective’
elements weren’t even recyclable.

WALT: understand and use persuasive techniques.
Sort the following statements into the grid below according to their language feature. Then have a go at writing your own to do with the Iron Man!
I’m lovin’ it, lovin’ it, lovin’ it… lovin’ it like that! It’s simply fantastic, brilliant, amazing.
Would you be willing to take that chance? 27% 6-11 year olds spend too much time on the computer.
It is suggested that only 75% of people drink water every day. We are all equal.
Sport is important to keep you happy, healthy, and motivated. Is this what you think is best?
You decide! We will become a better world. We will become a kinder world.

Date: Wednesday 10th June
WALT: Use our skills of inferencing to write a character’s inner monologue.
Read page 13 from “The rain poured down,” until the bottom of page 14.
Task: For each box, draw the expression on Hogarth’s father’s face and
write in the thought bubble what he must be feeling.
The rain poured down. Hogarth’s father drove hard. The headlights lit up the road and bushes. Suddenly – two headlamps in a tall treetop at the roadside ahead. Headlamps in a treetop? How? Hogarth’s father slowed, peering up to see what the lights might be, up in the treetop.
As he slowed, a giant iron foot came down in the middle of the road, a foot as big as a single bed. And the headlamps came down closer. And a giant hand reached down towards the windshield. The Iron Man!
Hogarth’s father put on speed, he aimed his car at the foot. Crash! He knocked the foot out of the way. He drove on, faster and faster. And behind him, on the road, a clanging clattering boom went up, as if an iron skyscraper had collapsed. The iron giant, with his foot knocked from under him, had toppled over.
