Deakin University aims to be a catalyst for positive change for the individuals and the communities it serves.Deakin has a proud history of broadening access to education. One of its founding features was a commitment to off-campus teaching that ensured higher education was not only accessible, but responsive to a student’s work, family and lifestyle commitments.

Today, equity and access continues to be one of Deakin’s core commitments. It is embedded within the University’s planning framework to ensure that individuals and groups who might not otherwise enjoy the benefits that flow from participation in higher education, have the opportunity to do so.

Education is key to social, cultural and economic prosperity. Yet access to education can be costly. That is why at Deakin we use our best endeavours to make higher education accessible for those most in need of assistance.

Deakin’s commitment to broadening access to education is reflected in the growing number and range of Access and Equity Scholarships available at the University. The scholarships are developed specifically for people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to access higher education – students from disadvantaged financial backgrounds; students from regional and rural backgrounds; students with a disability; mature-age students; and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

In addition to its scholarships program, Deakin has a range of initiatives that reinforce its commitment to student equity and access. These include an Equity and Diversity Unit; distance education; flexible study options and sophisticated online technology; as well as a range of student support services including a Disability Resource Centre, health and medical  services, counselling and personal development, and academic skills resources.

The University also recognises and rewards students who demonstrate outstanding academic skills through its wide range of Academic Excellence Scholarships. I encourage you to take the time to read about the range of scholarships available through the Deakin Scholarships program.

I look forward to welcoming you to the University.

The Difference is Deakin

Graduate sooner and get a head start on your career. At Deakin you don’t have to study a general degree before studying professional awards such as law, accounting or engineering. Deakin’s new trimester system gives you the potential to fast-track your degree, so you can start your career sooner.

Deakin prepares you for the real world by providing opportunities to gain valuable experience and develop real workplace skills in courses that are taught by industry professionals and through industry placements, internships and overseas study programs.

With more than 550 courses to choose from, Deakin offers you a broad range of options. Deakin continues to adapt and create new courses to meet ongoing trends in the Australian and international labour market, in addition to providing high quality traditional courses of study.

Study how and when you want. At Deakin it’s your choice. Multiple course entry and exit points, deferment, and full-time and part-time study all allow you the flexibility to structure your study to suit your lifestyle, as well as your work and personal commitments. Deakin also uses innovative technology to deliver its courses including online resources like podcasts and MP3s.

Deakin offers a total university experience. You will receive a quality yet flexible education that prepares you for the real world.

Our strong industry partnerships, state-of-the-art facilities and vibrant Campuses provide a meaningful learning experience and guide you to achieve your career aspirations.

The annual Australian Graduate Survey conducted by the Federal

Government found that in 2008, 85.2 per cent of bachelor degree graduates were in full-time employment within four months of graduating.

Choice of study environments. With Campuses located in Melbourne at Burwood, Geelong and Warrnambool on Victoria’s south-west coast, Deakin allows you to choose between metro, regional or rural study environments.

Employers have indicated that they want graduates who are broadly educated, lateral thinkers. From ecology or marketing, to IT and forensic science you can shape your study to suit your interests – or your career. We also offer a wide range of combined courses to help make you a highly sought-after employee. Deakin’s Graduate Certificate of Arts and Sciences gives you the opportunity to take on studies beyond the field of your degree, at the same time as studying an undergraduate degree.

Deakin understands that self-paced online learning will play a major role in your ongoing career development; as a result all undergraduate students are required to complete at least one unit of their course fully online.

Deakin’s courses are developed with industry and professional input from specialised Course Advisory Boards. Through these professional links we ensure that our courses are relevant, practical and deliver the skills in demand in the workplace, so you can hit the ground running.

Deakin’s recent achievements have been recognised through many awards, including an Award for Teaching Excellence and five Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in the 2008 Australian Learning and Teaching Council Awards.

Students tell us that Deakin’s supportive staff and friendly environment make it a great place to meet different people with new ideas. Our welcoming atmosphere also ensures that we continue to treat our students as individuals with freedom of thought and action.

Profile

Ashley Lamble IGNITED Scholarship recipient Bachelor of Engineering/ Bachelor of Commerce, Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds

Ashley was awarded the IGNITED scholarship after achieving an ENTER of 92.6 in her final year at Strathcona Baptist Girls Grammar School. She received a $10 000 scholarship and academic mentoring.

With an interest and aptitude in maths and science, Ashley wanted to undertake a broad engineering course. She was drawn to Deakin as it offered a broad first year, allowing her to get a taste of the different facets of engineering. Ashley has chosen a broad combined degree enabling her to keep her future options open.

Presently, she has an interest in infrastructure which is steering her towards civil engineering. ‘I will most likely specialise in civil engineering. I like the idea of helping society, benefiting the community. Taking something that has always been there and applying new technologies to it, making it better.’

Ashley is aware the subjects she has chosen are traditionally male dominated, but recommends that if girls are interested in maths and science they should persevere and keep going. IGNITED (Initiative for a Girls’ Network in Information and Technology and Engineering at Deakin) is a scholarship and mentoring program aimed at attracting more top female students to engineering and IT courses.

Profile

Christine McLachlan Lindsay Fox scholarship recipient Bachelor of Information Systems (Honours) Now completing a PhD.

`Through the generosity of the Lindsay Fox Scholarship, which funded my student fees and study costs, I was able to complete my studies at Deakin University. I completed a Bachelor of Information Systems in 2007 and went on to enrol in honours. This decision was helped by the fact that I had one year of the scholarship still available to me.

During secondary school, my mother got sick and passed away and as the eldest daughter her responsibilities fell to me. I thought I would never get to university. In total, I attempted Year 12 three times, the last time dropping out because I found out I was pregnant. When my third child was seven, she asked when I would go back to school. I answered ‘today’ and started Women’s Access at Gordon TAFE that very day. After completing my TAFE qualification, I applied to study at Deakin University thinking I would never get in.

Now that I have completed my honours year, I have decided to continue studying and complete a PhD in one of the areas identified from my honours research. This has all been possible because of the generosity of Lindsay Fox.

Profile

Aaron Peppin Accommodation Scholarship recipient Studying final year of Bachelor of Laws, Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds

Aaron grew up in the small country town of Enfield, before moving to Ross Creek, about 20 minutes south-west of Ballarat. He knew he wanted to study law and was prepared to go anywhere, but wasn’t in the best financial situation. He credits his school careers counsellor for helping him apply for equity and access entry, which secured him an accommodation scholarship at Deakin.

‘Deakin stood out amongst other universities because, although I was prepared to move to Melbourne if necessary, the Geelong Campus was more within my comfort zone in terms of its regional location and size,’ says Aaron.

‘From my personal experience, one of the main issues I faced in looking for a place to study and live was affordability. University can become quite expensive with the cost of accommodation, books and day-to-day living expenses. Consequently, it is important to find a location where accommodation is affordable, in terms of being inclusive of utilities and also being in close proximity to the University, to minimise travel expenses.’

‘Scholarships make university affordable, especially for those who are financially independent of their parents,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, as one of my scholarships pays all student contributions, I will not have a HECS debt at the end of my course, and can thus consider options such as postgraduate study or overseas travel without worrying about the financial implications down the track.’

Profile

Thilini Ishara Ratnayake – International Scholarship Program recipient Studying third year of a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in accounting, finance and financial planning), Melbourne Campus at Burwood

Thilini is from Sri Lanka and went to school at Anula Vidyalaya in Colombo. She was a straight A-student and also involved in various extra-curricular activities at school, including performing in the western band and being the school’s Deputy Head Prefect in 2006. She was selected to study at the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, but decided to broaden her opportunities and apply for a scholarship at a foreign university. She was also experiencing financial hardship due to the ill health of one of her parents.

Thilini says the whole process of applying and receiving the scholarship was very easy.

`All I had to do was send my academic and other relevant achievements to the Deakin representative, which was followed by an interview. Then they got back to me with my offer which I subsequently accepted. Everything was well organised in order to make students feel good about the University even before going there,’ says Thilini.

`It is an immense opportunity to receive benefits for your high achievements and you feel like all your efforts are rewarded and appreciated. I feel really encouraged to study at a place like Deakin. I know they are proud to have me as a student, so I’m more dedicated towards my studies, because I want Deakin’s name to outshine other universities once I reach my goals in the future,’ she says

`Deakin University is a friendly place which offers a great range of paths and potential of a good job in the future. At the same time there are lots of sports and club activities, giving you a vast exposure to build your personality and make contact with other students who are from different nationalities and cultures.’
