SUNDAY’S REFLECTION: Rejoice!

Today has traditionally been called “Gaudete Sunday.” The Latin tag is derived from Paul’s appeal in the second read-ing to “rejoice always in the Lord,” and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in pris-on. But from there he could see the progress of God’s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judg-ment Day. Today the Church selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is “the season of joy.” Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless.

KEEPING SUNDAY - ALL DAY As we take time each week to celebrate the Paschal Mystery in the Eucharist and to rest from the burdens of our daily lives, we remind ourselves that we are made in the image and likeness of God who “rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken” (Gn 2:2).

To celebrate the Lord’s Day more fully, consider trying the following:

♦ Don’t use Sunday as your catch-all day for errands and household chores.

♦ Share a family meal after Mass. Have the whole family join in the preparation and cleanup.

♦ Go for a walk or bike ride and give thanks to God for the beauty of nature.

♦ Spend time reading the Bible or a spiritual book. ♦ Pray the Rosary or the Liturgy of the Hours, alone or with

others. ♦ Visit parishioners and others who are homebound. ♦ Read Bible stories to your children. ♦ Turn off your gadgets and enjoy the silence.

Info. taken from USCCB from Celebrating the Lord’s Day

LEGION OF MARY Would you like to receive Our Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima in your home for a week’s visit? We have openings available for next year, starting in January 2019. You will keep her for one week. If you would like the blessing of our Lady’s visit, please call Rosa at 951-249-5938.

CHURCH CLEAN-UP Helpers needed to clean-up the Lord’s house. Please join us every Thursday after the 9:00am Mass. For more details, call Roz Esh at 714-654-6810.

ATTENTION: FLU SEASON If you are sick, please consider staying home from Mass. Catholics who are ill are excused from Sunday worship out of respect and concern for their fellow worshipers; therefore, it is not a sin. Catholics who are ill may make a spiritual communion during the time of their illness.

To ward off the colds and flu, remember to wash your hands throughout the day, keep your hands away from your face, get plenty of rest, and drink lots of fluids. We pray for all those who are sick; may they have a speedy recovery.

NOTE FROM OUR ADMINISTRAT0R

Dear Holy Spirit Church Family,

May the Advent Season that is upon us, help each of us to understand the mystery of God’s love for us in our daily lives.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, the Finance Council and I have recently noticed a decline in our Sunday Collection. Our initial review suggests that your contributions have shifted to our capital campaign project, Our Lady of Grace Pastoral Center. These generous contributions are greatly appreciated for the renovation and expansion of Doyle Hall and therefore may only be used for this purpose. The daily operation of our Parish counts on our Sunday Collections. As you may realize, the cost of living has been increasing. For the Church, this means an increase in minimum wages, utilities like water, electricity, garbage pick-up etc...

As good stewards of your gifts to the Parish, we, the Parish priests and staff, are making a conscious effort to conserve energy and reuse office supplies wherever possible. Further studies are in place and we hope to share further details at a later time. In the meantime, if God has blessed you financially, we ask that you would consider increasing your weekly contribution by at least $1 per person in your family. If everyone who attends Mass would participate, our Parish operational expenses should be able to be maintained. Again, thank you for your love and ongoing support to our Parish.

Fr. Joseph Thuong Tran
