Fourth Sunday of

Ordinary Time (B) January 31, 2021

Reading I: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 Responsorial Psalm: 95:1-2,6-7,7-9 Reading II: 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 Gospel: Mark 1:21-28

Theme: “Jesus rebuked him and said, ‘Quiet! Come out of him!’ The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud

cry came out of him. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’” (Gospel).

In the diagnosis of any disease, the clearer you discover and understand the disease, the faster you seek the cure and address the problem. In spiritual life, it is the same. We name the culprit of the spiritual disease, Satan. He who disobeyed God wishes to sow the seed of revolt and chaos in the life of people. It is through deceit, lies, and smart ways to cut short the will of God in our lives. Satan markets hell as heaven and many believe in him.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus confronted the Devil and rebuked him. “Jesus rebuked him and said, ‘Quiet! Come out of him!’ The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him” (Gospel). The Devil knows Jesus Christ and therefore familiar with God’s power and might. In fact when confronted, Satan obeys and follows the command of Jesus.

Our Lord Jesus shows us how to deal of the Devil’s presence and ways. It needs rebuking, confronting, and commanding in the name of Jesus Christ. The power of the Lord is enough to drive the presence of Satan. If you are dealing with Satan, it is naïve and even a mistake to rely on your own power. You will be run over and completely dominated. You know you are under the spell of Satan because you will never have the interest to love and worship the true God. Here is how we know about ungodly life; you build a life that is not based on God’s grace and you believe that you can go on in life without God’s help and support. Therefore, you live and move in the lies and magic of Satan. In Jesus’ name, command him to depart and not bother you.

Let us pray: God our Father, strengthen us in faith and trust in you through Son Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever, Amen.

In behalf of Archbishop Gustavo Garcia Siller and the Parishioners of Holy Name, I would like to congratulate Raymond and Rebecca Elizondo for this year’s Lumen Gentium awardees. I appreciate your ministry and the service you do to the community of Holy Name. God bless you.

Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario (B) 31 de enero de 2021

Primera lectura: Deuteronomio 18: 15-20 Salmo responsorial: 95: 1-2,6-7,7-9 Lectura II: 1 Corintios 7: 32-35 Evangelio: Marcos 1: 21-28

Parish Mission Statement: To unite our Parish family to grow in faith, love, and charity as we become active stewards in our church and community.

Pastoral Reflection By Lucy Cruz, Pastoral Council Member

In this week’s readings we are reminded of our responsibilities as Catholics. We are to remain devoted to God and our spouse. Our faith and love should remain undivided. It is in this message we see our duties defined as a Catholic and as a husband or wife. It is often witnessed in society the lack of devotion in God’s plan. We see this in negative individuals, low attendance in mass, and decreased faith in our community. God is powerful, God is love. In trying times it is important to remember that his love carries us through the hard and difficult times like the pandemic. We must remain people of faith. Most importantly, we must remember our duties as Catholics. _________________________________________________________________

Pope Francis proclaims “Year of St Joseph”

A creatively courageous father, example of love Patris corde highlights “the creative courage” of St. Joseph, which “emerges especially in the way we deal with difficulties.” “The carpenter of Nazareth,” explains the Pope, was able to turn a problem into a possibility by trusting in divine providence.” He had to deal with “the concrete problems” his Family faced, problems faced by other families in the world, and especially those of migrants. In this sense, St. Joseph is “the special patron of all those forced to leave their native lands because of war, hatred, persecution and poverty.” As the guardian of Jesus and Mary, Joseph cannot “be other than the guardian of the Church,” of her motherhood, and of the Body of Christ. “Consequently, every poor, needy, suffering or dying person, every stranger, every prisoner, every infirm person is ‘the child’ whom Joseph continues to protect.” From St Joseph, writes Pope Francis, “we must learn… to love the Church and the poor” (5). A father who teaches the value, dignity and joy of work “A carpenter who earned an honest living to provide for his family,” St Joseph also teaches us “the value, the dignity and the joy of what it means to eat bread that is the fruit of one’s own labour.” This aspect of Joseph’s character provides Pope Francis the opportunity to launch an appeal in favour of work, which has become “a burning social issue” even in countries with a certain level of well-being. “there is a renewed need to appreciate the importance of dignified work, of which Saint Joseph is an exemplary patron,” the Pope writes. Work, he says, “is a means of participating in the work of salvation, an opportunity to hasten the coming of the Kingdom, to develop our talents and abilities, and to put them at the service of society and fraternal communion.” Those who work, he explains, “are cooperating with God himself, and in some way become creators of the world around us.” Pope Francis encourages everyone “to rediscover the value, the importance and the necessity of work for bringing about a new ‘normal’ from which no one is excluded.” Especially in light of rising unemployment due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pope calls everyone to “review our priorities” and to express our firm conviction that no young person, no person at all, no family should be without work!” (6).

Holy Name Church Attendance Procedures

Mandatory Face Masks Must Be Worn Properly

We ask for Christian patience and understanding during these difficult and challenging times. It is imperative that each of us strictly abide by these procedures to prevent contamination and/or spread of the Covid-19 to one another.

For the safety of all, these procedures are mandatory and must be adhered to for Mass attendance. Anyone who cannot comply are asked to leave. Holy Name Catholic Church Procedures will follow the Archdiocese of San Antonio Guidelines for Mass Attendees and are as follows:

1. If you are feeling sick, we ask that you stay safe at home. We highly encourage those who are most vulnerable to continue to participate in mass via live stream or website (holynameusa.org). 2. Wash hands thoroughly before coming to the church. 3. Everyone must have their temperature taken before entering the church when applicable. Anyone with a fever will not be allowed entry. Anyone coughing or sneezing may not be allowed entry. 4. All must wear a face mask that covers both nose and mouth before entering the church and throughout the Mass. No exceptions except for infant children. 5. Bring hand sanitizer, your own missal or other mass aids to church. 6. Always maintain 6 feet between you and others not in your cohabitating family. 7. Follow the instructions of the ushers as you enter and leave the Church. 8. When guided by the ushers to receive communion, wear your mask receiving Communion, only removing it or lifting the mask up to consume Jesus away from the Priest or Deacon. 9. Seating will be on a first come first served basis for now, Mass capacity will be dependent on the number of attendees in each group, we can Safely seat. 10. Unfortunately, there will be no saving of seats. We ask that you ensure you enter with whomever you want to sit with. Once seated we cannot allow anyone to reposition because it will compromise the 6-foot separation distance. 11. After receiving Communion, we need everyone to maintain in their seats until the ushers direct your row towards the exits. We ask that you please be patient, as we are doing our best to maintain exiting in an orderly manner. 12. Finally, we ask that you be very patient with us, especially our volunteers who did not establish these procedures, but are only following them. They are giving of their time to help us conduct Mass, without volunteers this Mass would not happen. Thank you.
