The Epiphany of the Lord

January 3, 2020 Reading I: Isaiah 60:1-6 Responsorial Psalm: 72:1-2,7-8,10-11,12-13 Reading II: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12

Theme: “Behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is the newborn king of the Jews?’” (Gospel).

I wish you all a Blessed, New, and Healthy New Year! Let us hold on to our faith in God who loves us truly in Christ. I pray that all of you be protected from harm, evil and sickness.

I greet all Parishioners of Holy Name, Happy Feast Day too. St. Luke tells us, “On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived” (Luke 2:21). We as a community of Holy Name profess our devotion to the Child Jesus, our Lord and Savior. May Christ Jesus continue to bless and protect us.

As we celebrate today the Feast of Epiphany, we remember the Magi who traveled from afar to visit and offer gifts to the newborn child Jesus. We admire their devotion and respect to the Lord. They are the models of how we need to worship and praise God in our own lives. Every worship day (Sunday) and all days of obligation, we imitate the Magi. Out of gratitude and honor, precious gifts were offered to the Lord. In our love offering, we show the same gratitude and love to the Lord and his Church.

There are actually four men vested with power and influence in today’s Gospel. Herod and the three Magi. They all sought the Lord but Herod, insecure and corrupt wanted to harm and put to death the child Jesus. Remember what he did to the Holy Innocents. We never run out of Herods in the world and probably encounter them too often in our journey.

Like the Magi, we come to the Lord every time we receive Him in the Holy Eucharist and the sacraments. We also do not mind the inconvenience and even threats to our life when it comes to worshipping and paying homage to the Lord. God who loves us that he sent his Son Jesus deserves every moment of our own life and sacrifice. Let us come and worship him as we support and pray for one another. Let us learn his message of mercy, forgiveness, and peace in the world.

Let pray: God our Father, we thank you for your generosity in Jesus Christ your son and the Holy Spirit. Please protect and guide us all this new year and all the days of our lives, Amen.

Epifanía del Señor 3 de enero de 2020

Lectura I: Isaías 60: 1-6 Salmo responsorial: 72: 1-2,7-8,10-11,12-13 Lectura II: Efesios 3: 2-3a, 5-6 Evangelio: Mateo 2: 1-12

The Epiphany of the Lord “Reflect, today, upon these Magi and see them as a symbol of what you are called to do. You are called from the foreign place of this world to seek out the Messiah. What is God using to call you to Himself? When you discover Him, do not hesitate to acknowledge the full truth of who He is, lying prostrate before Him in complete and humble submission. Lord, I love You and adore You. I lay my life before You and surrender all. You are my Divine King and Savior. My life is Yours. (Pray three times and then prostrate yourself before the Lord) Jesus, I trust in You.”

Pastoral Reflection By Melanie Salazar, Pastoral Council Member

Merry Christmas season! Christ is born! Glory to God! “Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory.” How beautiful are the words of the first reading from the first Holy Mass of the calendar year. God is telling His chosen people to RISE UP. They are to rise up after darkness and thick clouds have covered the earth and the people, but the light of the Lord shines upon them. So too we living during our modern times and the 2020 pandemic, are called to RISE UP in SPLENDOR in 2021! A new year has begun with the light of the Lord guiding us so long as we follow it. The Psalms teach us to praise Christ the King and have confidence that EVERY NATION WILL PRAISE THE LORD! Not just a few, not just some, but EVERY NATION. Even the nations that have never heard the name of Jesus Christ and the nations that forbid His name to be said—all will one day worship Him who is King of the World. The Gospel reading shows us the beauty and humility of the God of all creation becoming part of creation. Jesus humbled Himself to begin life as a single zygote, go through the stages of fetal development, and be born in a manger. Great magi prostrated themselves before their King. The magi teach us that Jesus is deserving of worship at all stages of His life. Jesus was equally God both born and preborn, as a baby and a grown man. Praise be the name of Jesus, now and forever. Amen.

Holy Name Church Attendance Procedures

Mandatory Face Masks Must Be Worn Properly

We ask for Christian patience and understanding during these difficult and challenging times. It is imperative that each of us strictly abide by these procedures to prevent contamination and/or spread of the Covid-19 to one another.

For the safety of all, these procedures are mandatory and must be adhered to for Mass attendance. Anyone who cannot comply are asked to leave. Holy Name Catholic Church Procedures will follow the Archdiocese of San Antonio Guidelines for Mass Attendees and are as follows:

1. If you are feeling sick, we ask that you stay safe at home. We highly encourage those who are most vulnerable to continue to participate in mass via live stream or website (holynameusa.org). 2. Wash hands thoroughly before coming to the church. 3. Everyone must have their temperature taken before entering the church when applicable. Anyone with a fever will not be allowed entry. Anyone coughing or sneezing may not be allowed entry. 4. All must wear a face mask that covers both nose and mouth before entering the church and throughout the Mass. No exceptions except for infant children. 5. Bring hand sanitizer, your own missal or other mass aids to church. 6. Always maintain 6 feet between you and others not in your cohabitating family. 7. Follow the instructions of the ushers as you enter and leave the Church. 8. When guided by the ushers to receive communion, wear your mask receiving Communion, only removing it or lifting the mask up to consume Jesus away from the Priest or Deacon. 9. Seating will be on a first come first served basis for now, Mass capacity will be dependent on the number of attendees in each group, we can Safely seat. 10. Unfortunately, there will be no saving of seats. We ask that you ensure you enter with whomever you want to sit with. Once seated we cannot allow anyone to reposition because it will compromise the 6-foot separation distance. 11. After receiving Communion, we need everyone to maintain in their seats until the ushers direct your row towards the exits. We ask that you please be patient, as we are doing our best to maintain exiting in an orderly manner. 12. Finally, we ask that you be very patient with us, especially our volunteers who did not establish these procedures, but are only following them. They are giving of their time to help us conduct Mass, without volunteers this Mass would not happen. Thank you.
