“Epiphany”

If God could lie down in a cattle trough,

is any object safe from transformation?

If a pheasant girl can be the mother of God.

Is any life safe from the invasion of the eternal?

If all this could happen, O God,

what places of darkness on our earth are pregnant

with light waiting to be born this night:

If all this could happen, O God,

then you could be, and are, anywhere, everywhere

waiting to be born this night

in the most unbelievable places, perhaps even

in our hearts.

Amen.

Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany when the three wise men came to pay homage to the Infant Jesus. In our Religious Education classes, every day of the year our catechists and volunteers help to make Jesus known to our children. As Jesus revealed himself to the wise men and simple shepherds, he reveals himself to our children through the beautiful hearts of our volunteers. As the wise men found Jesus by following the star, how can we be “stars” for Jesus? Not the Hollywood Stars, nor the Sports Stars, but beacons of light and hope for others, especially for those who find themselves in darkness and those who have not yet met our Lord and Savior. We ask for your continued prayers and support as we continue our catechetical journey into our new semester.

Religious Education classes resume on January 7, 2019.

Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany and sing the traditional hymn for this feast written by John Hopkins Jr., We Three Kings. John Hopkins Jr. was born in Pittsburgh, the son of an Episcopal bishop. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1839 and earned a Master’s degree in 1845. In 1850 he graduated from the General Theological Seminary and became the seminary’s first music teacher from 1855 to 1857. The Episcopal Church celebrated Epiphany in both American and the United Kingdom and during the 1800s this special day was traditionally the day the Christmas tree was taken down and children received the gifts and treats that had been hanging on it since it has been first cut. John Hopkins Jr. had no children of his own, but had several nieces and nephews and often observed them counting down the moments until they could raid the evergreen. They, like so many, were unaware of the symbolism the bearing of gifts had to those brought by the wise men to Jesus. In 1857 he decided his gift to this nieces and nephews would be a moving tribute to the legendary visitors from the East as described in the gospel of Matthew. As a seminary graduate, he knew little was know about the travelers so he combined the biblical record of the trip with legends that had been passed down. The result is a song that is instructive and worshipful. The cadence of the melody fully captures the image of a trip across the desert and plains on camels. The hymn has an oriental, or Middle Eastern feel, and the words dramatically embrace the trip, as if he had been there with them. John Hopkins Jr. served as rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Williamsport, Pennsylvania and delivered the eulogy at the funeral of President Ulysses S. Grant. He died in 1885 in Hudson, NY and is buried next to his father at Bishop’s House, Rock Point, Vermont. As we sing the refrain today, think of his powerful view of the star, guiding the wise men on their journey then, and all of us on our life’s journey now.

“star of wonder, star of night…...guide us to they perfect light”

EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

January 7, 2019

First Reading: Isaiah 60, 1-6

Isaiah rejoices over the light and glory that will shine upon Jerusalem. He describes how the wealth of nations will

be brought to Jerusalem, and travelers will arrive bearing gifts and praising God.

Second Reading: Ephesians 3, 2-3a. 5-6

Paul explains to the Ephesians that the Gentiles are now co-heirs with the Jews. Through Jesus, they became

members of the same body. Therefore, they would receive everything God had promised the Jewish converts if they

followed Christ's teachings.

Gospel: Matthew 2, 1-12

Astrologers from the east came looking for the newborn king of the Jews, which greatly disturbed King Herod. Herod

wanted to kill Jesus, and asked the astrologers to return and tell him where Jesus was. The astrologers found Jesus

and brought him gifts, but received a message in a dream telling them not to return to Herod.
