Second Collection Next Week The Archdiocese of Military Service was established by Saint John Paul II in 1985 to provide the Catholic Church’s full range of pastoral ministries to those in the United States Armed Forces. The mission of the Archdiocese is to “serve those who serve” by providing the same pastoral care and services as any other Catholic diocese to Catholics serving in the United States Armed Forces, enrolled in U.S. Military Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs’ Medical Centers in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Guam, working in civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations. The Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA gives each of us the opportunity to serve those who serve.

Saint John Neumann’s Story Perhaps because the United States got a later start in the history of the world, it has relatively

few canonized saints, but their number is increasing. John Neumann was born in what is now the Czech Republic. After studying in Prague, he came to New York at 25 and was ordained a priest. He did missionary work in New York until he was 29, when he joined the Redemptorists and became its first member to profess vows in the United States. He continued missionary work in Maryland, Virginia and Ohio, where he became popular with the Germans.

At 41, as bishop of Philadelphia, he organized the parochial school system into a diocesan one, increasing the number of pupils almost twentyfold within a short time.

Gifted with outstanding organizing ability, he drew into the city many teaching communities of sisters and the Christian Brothers. During his brief assignment as vice provincial for the Redemptorists, he placed them in the forefront of the parochial movement.

Well-known for his holiness and learning, spiritual writing and preaching, on October 13, 1963, John Neumann became the first American bishop to be beatified. Canonized in 1977, he is buried in St. Peter the Apostle Church in Philadelphia. Feast day – January 5. Source: https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-john-neumann/

Mystical Word

written by L.J. Milone, Director of Faith Formation, [email protected]

January 5, 2020 page five

Today is the feast of the Epiphany. We celebrate the wise men from the East seeking Jesus: “And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother.” These magi came to adore a child, which is a fact we might skip over. A child symbolizes littleness, lowliness, and poverty. To be a child in ancient Israelite society was to be nobody. This is an important point about the Gospel’s path of holiness. For, it is a path of nothingness: detachment, dis-identification from all things, and self-emptying.

This is, fundamentally, the mystery of Christmas. God became a vulnerable, helpless human child. God self-emptied. We may not think of Christmas like this. My twins are a good reminder for me of just how helpless God became. These days they often roll onto their tummies and lift their heads. But they can’t stay there too long. They’ll start crying because they can’t roll over onto their backs again. And, that’s just one thing they can’t do by themselves! Perhaps some of the fascination with infants is that they disarm us and enable us to realize we are all helpless, vulnerable, and weak. We are not often told however, that these are prized Gospel values. Jesus’ way to happiness, holiness, and fulfillment involves being nobody and nothing.

To further this conversation and make it at least a little concrete, I want to reflect on a short and tragically unknown story of a holy man from ancient Christian Syria. It is a rich story, and, so, we will reflect on it throughout the month of January. Still, the core of the story is quite simple. The holy man was from the rich, noble class in Rome. He left his family on the day they arranged a luxurious marriage for him. He slipped away on a ship and found his way to Edessa, which is in Syria. In Edessa, the holy man spent his days praying in a church. In the evening, he would beg for some food. He ate only one meal a day. Any food he received over his needs he gave away to the poor. He then stayed with the poor of Edessa, spending time with and sleeping among them.

But, when they slept, he would rise and pray, against a wall, making a cross with his body. The holy man did this for many years. The story of this anonymous holy man raises an

important assumption about saints. We tend to think that being holy means we must be special, miraculous, and extraordinary. In short, we think it means doing something heroic for God. The man of God did not do anything world-changing during his poor and abased life. He prayed. He ate modestly. He lived among the poor. That was it. Jesus does not call us to do extraordinary feats of holiness. It really is not about that at all. For Jesus, it is

not heroic religion but Gospel nothingness that matters. The man of God does nothing spectacular. Most lives of saints throughout history have lauded the holy person’s extraordinary ascetical feats. The man of God only prays and, modestly for a saint, eats one meal a day. The man of God’s unremarkable life demonstrates a perfectly ordinary and fully Gospel-based dedication to God alone. First, he prayed. He lived in the silence, mystery, and nothingness of God. To embrace such degrading poverty out of love for God means he truly desired God alone. He must have been quite detached from his whole ego-mind with all its judgmental, condemnatory, endlessly commentating thoughts. Second, he must have let go of any and all social expectations. In fact, it seems he was totally detached from what other people thought of him. Third, the holy man’s singular desire was to disappear into God. Nothing else. He did not crave recognition. He actively shunned it. He did not desire to do something great for God. He only wanted to know God. This holy man, anonymous and lowly, shows us a simple, everyday way to live for God: pray, accept lowliness, and don’t worry about what others might think.

Most of all, if we want to know God, be holy, and move through this world with inner freedom and tremendous joy, there is one thing to do: pray! And, prayer is not talking to God, but communing with the mystery of God beyond thinking. Even more, remaining in the holy presence of God as much as we can all day long is the real secret to growing in holiness. There is no divine intimacy without taking time for real deep prayer, which lets go of thinking to rest in God through faith.
