This was what was so surprising about the behavior of Jesus. Although he was their close friend, he chose to stay away, that Gods glory would be manifested. This is a persistent theme in Johns Gospel. Right to the very end, Jesusworks were meant to give glory to the Father. GIVE GLORY TO GOD On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, just before we begin to enter Holy Week, we are sum-moned to Bethany. The Administrator’s Desk

In this time of the Coronavirus some of you may have reflected that God has given or allowed us all to do penance, not just individually, but communally. We cannot talk to each other face-to-face, we cannot gather in public spaces, especially at church, we cannot go to restaurants; all of which are good and legitimate pleasures. It seems the Lord wants us to enter more deeply, perhaps than we ever have, into the fasting, abstinence, and charity of the Lenten season. I encourage you to embrace the disciplines that have been imposed on us and not deny them. If we embrace these penances of silence, absence, avoiding public gatherings, and others, and unite them to the sufferings of Jesus on the Cross, or offer them to God, He will use them to accomplish spiritual goods: conversions of friends and enemies, return of children to church, and healings among other things, and even our own growth in holiness. So, as the spiritual disciplines of Lent have been thrust upon us, let us embrace them, offer them to God, Father, Son, and Spirit for our spiritual benefit and for those around us.

IGNITE Campaign

The IGNITE Campaign has been temporarily suspended; however if you are in the process of sending-in your pledge, please continue to do so. I have sent mine. In fact, since the Lord is merciful to those who show mercy, it is an opportune time to show mercy to others by filling-in your pledge card and mailing it in. Even a small monthly, quarterly, or yearly donation will benefit many and obtain mercy from the Lord.

Online Giving

In the absence of Sunday Mass collections we are asking that pa-rishioners either mail-in their weekly gifts, drop-them-off in the Drop Box on the porch of the new rectory (I think this can be done in the spirit of the ‘Stay-at-home’ order, since it supports our church’s needs including online worship), or donate online through our website www.holyfamilycatholicchurchmcnairtx.org, or Face-book at: holy-family Baytown. If you use bill pay through your bank, you can add Holy Family to your bill list for the bank to send a check to the parish, at 7122 Whiting Rock St., Baytown, TX 77521, for you. Or, you can use the following link: https://www.archgh.org/ways-to-give/parish-offertory-support/ and select our parish name. The Archdiocese will send the money to the parish. Our fixed expenses (required every month) are about $9000 and our variable costs are about $1250-$2500; so even with the minimum of $1250 our expenses are about $10,250 each month. In charity, I ask you to remember to maintain your regular donations and mail-in the envelopes with a check or choose one of the other options. One of the precepts of the Church is to provide for the financial support of your church, I humbly ask that you do. Thank you.

REGULATIONS FOR FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Fast and abstinence are two common penances in the Church. Absti-nence means we do no eat meat. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. The obligation to abstain on the appointed days begins the day after your fourteenth birthday. Fasting means that we eat only one full meal on the fast day. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days when we are obliged to fast. Two other light meals are permitted, but eating between meals is not permitted. You are obliged to observe the fast from the day after your eighteenth birthday until the day after your fifty-ninth birthday. Pregnant women and people who are sick are not obliged to fast. Others who feel they are unable to observe the laws of fast and abstinence should consult a parish priest or confessor. Fast and abstinence are recognized forms of penance. By doing these and oth-er penances, we can realize that interior change of heart that is so necessary for all Christians.

A PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my

soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were

already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen. ************************************

TELEVISED AND LIVE STREAMING MASS

Go to www.archgh.org; under COVID-19 Latest Updates, click on learn more, then click on Visit our digital guide to watching Mass online

for a list of parishes who are offering Mass online with the times and the venue such as Facebook, YouTube, or the Website.

Livestreaming of Mass from Holy Family Catholic

This Sunday at 9:30 AM I will broad-cast Mass live on the parish’s Facebook account. Our Facebook account is: holy-family Baytown. If you go there, it should be easy to watch Mass live. If you miss it, it will be rebroadcast at 12 Noon, and of course at a later date. It will be available later, on our parish website. I encourage everyone to set-aside the time they normally worship on Saturday evening or Sunday morn-ing and create a “mini-church” in your home where you can watch a Mass (live or taped) and participate like you would on Sundays. When it comes to receiving Holy Communion, you may make a “spiritual communion” by invit-ing the Lord Jesus to spiritually come into your soul at this time.

CCE

I will be contacting the CCE teachers to discuss how parents or grandparents can continue educating their children in the faith at home at this time.

Parish Communications

I will also be discussing how to im-prove parish communications using electronic media with our IGNTIE con-sultant. If you have any ideas that you would like to share, feel free to email them to us at: [email protected].

We ask for your blessings upon our effort to help secure the future of the Church in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. May your people respond with hope and gen-erosity to our campaign, IGNITE: Our Faith, Our Mission. May the sacrifices we make together today bear fruit in lives of faith for gen-erations to come. We ask this through Christ Our Lord.
