The Flight Before Christmas12/10 CBSA flying squirrel shows a young reindeer, who believes his long-lost father was part of Santa’s airborne sleigh team, how to soar into the sky in this surprisingly dark and emotionally complex one-hour animated tale from Finland. The voice cast includes Emma Roberts (“Nancy Drew”) and Norm MacDonald (“Saturday Night Live”).

The 13th Annual A Home for the Holidays12/21 CBSLet’s hope the number 13 proves lucky for the children featured in this year’s edition of the heartwarming holiday special, in which celebrities share inspirational stories of adoption and profile children look-ing for homes as well as those who have found forever families. Performers include Martina McBride, Mary J. Blige, Justin Bieber, One Republic and Christina Perri.

Brian Boitano Skating Spectacular12/18 NBCAs the boys from “South Park” famously asked, what would Brian Boitano do? Well, at this time of year, he’d host this annual special featuring some of his fellow champion figure skaters. The band Chicago provides music for the show, which includes performances by Yuka Sato, Michael Weiss, Ryan Bradley, and the British duo Sinead and John Kerr, among others.

Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice12/5 ABCLanny and Wayne, the elves introduced in the 2009 special “Disney Prep & Landing” who oversee Santa’s arrivals at children’s houses, return in this new tale with a new mission: recovering some classified North Pole technology that a naughty youngster has gotten hold of. Dave Foley, Derek Richardson and Sarah Chalke lead the voice cast.

A Night at the Movies12/6 TCMThe new episode “Merry Christmas” looks at the holiday-themed films that have become part of many families’ seasonal celebrations, including old favorites “Miracle on 34th Street” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.” A screening of one not-quite-so-old classic, “A Christmas Story,” follows.

The Elf on the Shelf: An Elf’s Story12/9 CBSSo how does Santa know who’s naughty and nice anyway? According to this ani-mated special, he uses spies -- er, scouts. They’re elves whose duty is to keep tabs on children’s behavior and let the big guy know which list to put them on. Based on a popular children’s book, this is the story of one such elf, Chippey, and his mission to help a troubled boy learn to believe in Christmas magic.

From the moment the Peanuts gang skates, and Pigpen manages to raise a cloud of dust on ice in the opening of “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” a feeling of all is right with the world washes over viewers.

Charlie Brown could well be a barometer for judging character: If people don’t like him, are they worth knowing?

It’s not easy being honorable when your mom sounds like a trombone and even your dog doesn’t respect you. Yet Charlie Brown, he with the

yellow sweater and dubious athletic abilities, is one of the most honorable characters ever drawn. For this we have the late great Charles M. Schulz to thank.

Two new CD collections – “The Charlie Brown Collection” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas” are out, featuring the tree even more famous than the one at Rockefeller Center.

Since 1965, the Christmas cartoon has become the standard for which all should be compared. There’s a solid plot,

character development and lessons. When the story begins, Charlie Brown (he’s never just Charlie) explains to Linus that he’s sad. “I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to feel,” he says.

specimen with a few spindly branches. Linus, the voice of reason, tells him, “It doesn’t quite match the modern spirit.”

“I don’t care,” Charlie Brown says. “I think it needs me.”

Indeed it does. We all do.What Charlie Brown realizes is that the real

spirit of Christmas has been corrupted. It’s too commercial, too fast, and too flippant.

As popular as this classic is, it’s difficult to imagine it landing on network TV as a new show today because of its forthright speech about Jesus. When Charlie Brown wonders if anyone knows the true meaning of Christmas, Linus volunteers that he does.

“And there were in the same country, shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them,” Linus says.

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior, which is Christ the Lord,” Linus says without fanfare. “And this shall be a sign onto you. Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in the manger. And sud-denly there was with the angel a multitude in the heavenly host, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace goodwill toward men.”

Linus takes his blanket and says, “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

of the enormous head with sparse hair and most plaintive of expressions is never heeded.

In the Christmas special, Charlie Brown is dispatched to buy a tree for the play. Lucy orders him to get the “biggest aluminum tree you can find, maybe paint it pink.”

Of course Charlie Brown finds a scraggly

Charlie Brown then talks to Lucy, posing as a psychiatrist, who advises, him quite correctly, that he needs to be involved and the group needs a director for its Christmas play.

A perfect match is forged. Not that anyone really listens to Charlie Brown.

Do they listen to him as baseball manager? No, he

Santa settles into an armchair. Mrs. Claus reminds him of his tight schedule, including that extra stop in Florida for the Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade Sunday, Dec. 25, on ABC.

Santa just laughs. And yes, he really does laugh, “Ho, ho, ho!”

Mrs. Claus shuts the doors to the elves’ workshop, muffling the din. The big night is a few weeks off, but he’s unfazed.

“Well, I have been doing this for an awful long time,” he says.

It may seem surprising that Santa would sit for an interview during his busiest season, but he says, “With the economy in a tailspin, I felt I needed to reassure children that Christmas will come this year.”

Rudolph pokes his head through a window, and Santa tells him to return to the stable.

“Now where was I?” Santa says. “Oh yes, many parents worry they can’t keep their houses, never mind buy expensive toys. I want to tell everyone Christmas never goes away, though it may be a little different.”

On Christmas Eve, NBC offers its second airing of the classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” this holiday season (the first was Dec. 3). This year also marks the 1946 film’s 65th anniversary.

“It has a life of its own,” says Jimmy Hawkins, who played Tommy Bailey, the youngest son of the film’s hero, George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart). “It’s part of the tradition. While people are making eggnog or trimming the tree or having people in, it’s always playing.”

“It’s a Wonderful Life” took a cir-cuitous path to its beloved status. It began as “The Greatest Gift,” an unsold short story by Civil War historian Philip Van Doren Stern – which he self-published as a Christmas card for friends and family – that was bought by Republic Pictures for $10,000.

After three unsuccessful attempts to craft a screen-play, it landed with Capra, whom some critics had derided for relying on a particular brand of sentimen-tality, dubbed “Capra-corn.”

However this epithet may be applied to Capra’s other films, it’s an unfair label to put on “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The film starts with many glowing scenes of yester-year as George grows up in the idyllic small town of Bedford Falls. But the misuse of power by town boss Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore) overshadows the Bailey family and its building-and-loan business.

George longs to see the world, but Potter’s machinations and other circum-stances thwart his dreams, trapping him in Bedford Falls. Outwardly he does the right things, but inwardly he nurses a deep well of frustration, anger and bit-terness.

On one fateful Christmas Eve, it all boils over. George contemplates suicide, until an angel (Henry Travers) shows him that he is not a failure after all.

While the movie ends on a hopeful note, its unflinching look at the tri-

umphs and heartaches of real life allows the film to be taken seriously and not just considered heartwarming holiday fluff.

“He gets to see what life would have been like had he not been born,” Hawkins says. “He sees that fam-ily, friends and belief in miracles is what it’s all about. He’s just grateful to be back. But yeah, it was very dark.”

While not a box-office flop, the movie was hardly a hit, and it probably would have faded into obscurity had not a clerical error caused the copyright to expire in the early 1970s. Freed from paying royalties for the film, TV stations played it wall to wall between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“In Los Angeles, one time,” Hawkins says, “between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, it played 11 times.”

BY JAY BOBBINLessons can be taught anytime, anywhere ... and it’s quite possible

Jean Shepherd had that in mind with “A Christmas Story.”The humorist devised “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash,”

the novel behind the 1983 movie classic that begins its now-tradi-tional 24-hour-marathon workout Saturday, Dec. 24, on TBS. Also the screenplay’s co-writer, Shepherd narrates the misadventures of wide-eyed young Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) and his family during a 1940s holiday season in Indiana.

Those who never miss a December viewing of “A Christmas Story” know its wisdom already, but here are some of the pearls we’ve gleaned:1. Be careful with a Red Ryder air rifle, or “you’ll shoot your eye out.”

2. Don’t stick your face in your mashed potatoes, then snort like a pig.

3. Don’t let your mother bundle you up so tightly you can’t get up if you fall down.

4. A lamp resembling a woman’s leg works as well as any other lamp.

5. Don’t rule out Chinese food for Christmas dinner.

6. Make sure your home heater is in working order before winter comes.

7. If you sit on the lap of a mean store Santa, have an exit plan. (And try not to make it a slide.)

8. Don’t put your tongue on a metal pole in freezing temperatures.

Just as everyone knows winter will come again, so will a snowman named Frosty.Since 1969, there hasn’t been a year when television has missed out on showing

the animated special “Frosty the Snowman,” based on one of the holiday season’s most popular songs. This year is no different: It’s set to “thumpety-thump-thump” its way to CBS again Friday, Dec. 9, but “Frosty” fans don’t even have to wait that long.

A Blu-ray edition of the show was released recently. “Frosty” also has been available on DVD for some time, both by itself and in combination packs that also include some of the other seasonal specials produced by genre titans Arthur Rankin Jr,. and Jules Bass, very notably “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

The legend of “Frosty” actually owes a lot to “Rudolph,” which “singing cowboy” Gene Autry recorded in 1949. In a bid to replicate that success – surprise! – Autry released

“Frosty,” created by songwriters Walter “Jack” Rollins and Steve Nelson, the next year. And, indeed. lightning struck twice.

In fact, it struck many more times, considering the range of performers who put their own musical spins on “Frosty” … everyone from Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald to the Beach Boys and the Jackson 5. Oh, and the Partridge Family and Alvin and the Chipmunks, too.

Other than Autry’s version, though, the definitive “Frosty” arguably was recorded by comedian Jimmy Durante. It’s no surprise, then, that Rankin and Bass signed him up to participate in their cartoon representation of the tale that the tune tells. Like Autry, though, they needed “Rudolph” first.

The television producers sold their vision of the reindeer story to NBC in 1964, and it was such an immediate success – with its ending even being revised after its first telecast, since so many viewers demanded to know what

became of the Misfit Toys – other Rankin/Bass productions were inevitable. “Frosty” was among the first of the follow-ups, but instead of using the company’s “Animagic” stop-motion-puppet process, it went for a more traditional style of animation.

CBS has had “Frosty” from the beginning. In the story narrated by Durante, youngster Karen (voice of cartoon veteran June Foray, who also spoke for several

other characters in the show) foregoes the proposed name Oatmeal for the snowman that she and several friends

build. What ultimately brings Frosty to life (with the voice of comic Jackie Vernon) is the special hat tossed aside by a magician (voice of Billy De Wolfe).

The illusionist becomes the villain of the piece, trying to get his hat back as Frosty and Karen go on

the run. The outcome leaves Karen in a puddle of tears and Frosty in … well, just a puddle,

until help arrives in the form on someone by the name of Santa Claus.

All ends happily, as it has each Christmas season for more than 40 years. “Frosty Returns” and “The Legend

of Frosty the Snowman” were done by different producers, but Rankin/Bass also

turned out “Frosty’s Winter Wonderland” and “Rudolph and Frosty‘s Christmas in July.” Still,

for the vast majority of “Frosty” followers, there’s nothing like the original.

And as Frosty himself promises, “I’ll be back again some day.” In roughly 12 months, we predict.

Time again for the corn-cob pipe and button nose:

Q: Have you always liked the song named after you?A: I’ll admit it took some getting used to. I love the way it ends, since I guess I did “go down in history.” But I’m not too fond of being reminded how other reindeer “used to laugh and call (me)

names.” Hey, how would YOU like hearing that year after year? I mean, it’s been more than 40 years. Can’t we all just move on? Don’t get me wrong, though: I’m not bitter about the tune. Despite never having seen

a single penny of the residuals.Q: Did you always have faith in Hermey’s dental potential?A: Listen. Anyone who’s that con-

vinced he can do what he really wants to is going to be a success, whatever he sets his heart on. I haven’t seen him in awhile. I wonder

if he still has that over-gelled flip in his hair. Always envied that.

Q: How uncomfortable was that fake black nose you had to wear?

A: Don’t get me started! As far as others were concerned, it got the job done for a while, but me? In my mind, I could still see it blinking. It’s like many people who have just lost a lot of weight; others may say you look slim, but in the mirror, you see the same old you.Q: What attracted you to Clarice?A: Have you ever seen the special? Sweet, pretty, compassionate, nonjudgmental – what wasn’t to like? I don’t mean to boast, but I think this reindeer got much luckier than a lot of humans do.

Q: Did you like the job Sam the Snowman did in narrating your story?A: Certainly! What a warm, comforting presence. And the way he sang “Holly Jolly Christmas” and “Silver and Gold”? Why, the great Burl Ives couldn’t have done better!Q: Are things still the way they used to be in Santa’s Workshop?A: Toys have gotten unbelievably advanced. I mean, Barbie has a working cell phone now! Some of the elves had to take a computer-training course a few years back. They got strange looks from the other students – I guess it was like “Amish in the City” – but they came back ready to handle any-thing that came up. They do seem to play around with Xboxes way too much. That’s just my opinion, but I’m sticking to it.Q: What did you think when Santa finally asked you to guide his sleigh that foggy Christmas Eve?A: Are you kidding? It was like a minor-league ballplayer being called up to the majors. Or an understudy being given the lead in the play. As I told Kriss Kringle at the time, “It will be an honor, sir.” And it was! It was!Q: How did Santa’s sleigh manage to fly in the special without any evidence of wind shear?A: Oh, you are getting way too analytical. It’s magic! Or should I say “Animagic”?Q: What will you be doing this Christmas Eve?A: All you need to do is walk outside and look up. I wouldn’t miss it.

Poseidon on New Year’s Eve, the cruise ship’s pas-sengers are merrily crooning “Auld Lang Syne” at the moment the vessel begins to capsize. Like many other sites, the Posei-don hasn’t yet gotten rid of its Christmas tree, which comes in lucky for the survi-vors who have to climb it to survive.

BY JAY BOBBIN

“About Last Night ... ” (1986): As evidence that almost anyone’s New Year’s Eve has to go better, take Danny and Debbie (Rob Lowe, Demi Moore), whose live-in relationship hits the skids amid a huge holi-day crowd at a favorite Chicago bar. While she wants to comfort a girlfriend who’s just suffered a trauma in love, he wants to party, and the rest pretty much spells itself out.

“When Harry Met Sally ... ” (1989): Although the picture has a postscript beyond it, this comedy’s pivotal scene is set at a New Year’s Eve party where hopeless – and hapless – roman-tic Sally (Meg Ryan) isn’t feeling very celebratory, until longtime confidant Harry (Billy Crystal) shows up and finally professes the feelings for her that took so long to develop.

“Peter’s Friends” (1992): Along the lines of “The Big Chill,” this engaging British-made comedy reunites a group of college chums at one’s (Stephen Fry) English estate on New Year’s Eve. A couple of the film’s other actors directed (Kenneth Branagh) and co-wrote (Rita Rudner) the picture, which also features Hugh Laurie, well before he became an American television star in “House.”

“Entrapment” (1999): The dawn of the millennium is a big factor in this heist caper, as a master thief (Sean Connery)and the insurance investigator (CatherineZeta-Jones) who’s after him scheme toswipe billions of dollars while just about everyone else is cheering the arrival of the21st century.
