Motorcycle Awareness Month
– already! We have cool bumper
stickers with “Moon Eyes” that
say “LOOK OUT FOR MO-
TORCYCLES”. Grab some at
The House and help spread the
word. The Bike Blessing is May
7th – don’t miss it!
Thanks to all the HOG volunteers who graciously gave
their time at the bike show. Our chapter is richer because
of it. You all did a great job!
I didn’t make it to Hollister as planned. The weather was
crappy so went to San Diego instead. I did make a couple
big dealer parties in Phoenix for AZ Bike Week. Chester’s
HD had a Gretchen Wilson concert and Buddy Stubbs HD
had a huge party. I got to visit with lots of HD enthusiasts
from all over the US including AK..
I was happy to see the Muni Street Sweepers out early this
year. Give them a pat on the back if you have a chance.
I just found out that May 14th is the official national
Women’s Ride Day – what’s happening LOH???
Live Ride for MDA is different this year. We are selling
raffle tickets instead of Live Ride packs. The ride will be
from Anchorage to a huge party at Alaska Raceway Park in
Palmer. Raffle tickets are $20 each or 6 for $100. All bik-
ers who buy 6 tickets for $100 will get an HD/MDA pin
and invite to the Live Ride party on July 16. Bikers are
encouraged to check out as many tickets as they think they
can sell. If you sell $800 of raffle tickets you will be in the
Parade of Heroes. The tickets are available at The House or
the MDA Office. The prize is a 2011 Harley Sportster.
Bring your bike by The House to register for The HOG
Alaska / Yukon Mileage Plan. There will be at least three
winners this year.
Our “Spring Kick off Party” will be on the weekend of
May 13-15. We will have our “HOH Tent Event” starting
on Friday the 13th through Sunday the 15th. We will have
bands, a beer garden, lots of food, fun, prizes and games on
Saturday the 14th. Mark your calendar and spread the word
– we wanna have a BIG PARTY! If you are selling a bike,
get it registered for the “Tent Event”. Space is limited.
Harley-Davidson will be the official sponsor of the HOKA
HEY Rally this year. It will start at Chester’s HD in Mesa
AZ and end in Nova Scotia with a route through all of the
“lower 48” states. Who’s gonna go?
The tragedy of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan will
have some effect on the production of Harley-Davidson
motorcycles. A chip used in the radio is in short supply and
may cause HD to cut back as many as 6000 radio equipped
touring models. We can only imagine what the people of
Japan are going through – keep them in your prayers.
It sure feels good to be back in the wind! Stay safe and see
you at The House!
Barry
This year the live ride will be from
Anchorage Alaska to the Alaska
Raceway Park in Palmer
There is going to be a little different spin on
the event from previous years.
Evidently, instead of getting pledges, this year
we will be selling raffle tickets. The tickets
sell for $20.00 each or 6 for $100. If you
buy 6 tickets you get a HD MDA pin and
entry into the Live Ride.
Those of you who wish to check out some tick-
ets can work toward the Parade of Heroes. To
be in the Parade you must sell a minimum of
$800 worth of tickets.
The tickets are currently available at the
House of Harley. So swing by and pick up yours

ASST. DIRECTOR ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR
Hello from the saddlebags of
your Assistant Director
Activities Officer.
Hope everyone’s month
went great. The bike show I
thought was a huge success;
hats off to Dia and all of the
volunteers who put on a great show! As for me I have
put some miles on my bike and oh my it feels sooo
good to get out on the road again. I almost forgot how
good it feels to ride, oh my! what a fantastic feeling!
For those of you who are riding please be careful of
the cages out there. They don’t pay attention to what
they’re doing and will try to squash you like a bug.
We have some awesome rides coming up this sum-
mer, unfortunately, due to my new job I may not get
to attend all of them but I will try my hardest to get to
most of them.
The HOG rally this year is being held in Fair-
banks and the Website to sign up is up and running
now. For those who sign up early there will be a
really nice coin for you as a reward! You will not see
another coin like this anywhere and you will only get
it for signing up early. That means there won’t be any
available to purchase at the Rally.
We also have the Meet in the Middle coming up
soon don't forget to call the Grizzly Bear and make
your reservation. They still have a lot of rooms avail-
able. the Black Sheep have graciously stepped in to
cook for us, and as most of your know those guys are
awesome cooks. The cost is very reasonable for what
you get, $20.00 in advance and $25.00 once there.
We would really like to get a good count of who will
be coming so please buy your tickets early. They
need to know how much to bring! On the menu is:
steaks, potatoes, chicken and some deserts - awesome
spread! So come on up meet some new people and
enjoy some fantastic cooking.
We also have a couple of overnighters planned,
one to Beaver Creek (remember your passports) and
also one to Valdez. Hope everyone has a great sum-
mer, take care.
And as Always Rubber Side Down Chrome Side Up.

It’s MAY! Summer is here
after a long winter and a
long spring. It’s time to get
the bikes out if you haven't
done so yet. Just watch out
for gravel and pot holes.
They will get you if you’re not watching for them.
Thanks for all the help at the bike show. I handed out
25 patches with 2011 on them.
I'm having the first grip class on May 3rd Tues at
6:00pm and then every other Tues after that. It’s up-
stairs at HOH. The first Wed. Night Ride is on the 4th.
Meet at HOH at 6pm and leave at 6:30 sharp. Then
on Sat May 7th is the annual Bike Blessing at the
downtown park strip. I'm going to try to keep my
groups small this year. So I thank all of the road cap-
tains that will help out this year in advance.
The best way to deal with an unexpected obstacle in
your path is to...
#1 Not ever have an obstacle in your path. Well, duh,
right? You’re probable thinking, I'm not a psychic -
the only way to make sure I never find an obstacle in
my path is to never get on my motorcycle!" True
enough. But remember, safe riding is all about risk
reduction not risk elimination. So with that in mind,
let’s start by going back to some of the very basic-
because it’s impossible to overemphasize the funda-
mentals! If you've taken a basic rider training class,
you may recall that much emphasis was placed on
"S.E.E."- which stands for Search, Evaluate, Execute,
This three-step concept boils down to actively look-
ing for potential hazards and dangerous situations that
may develop, analyzing what you see and deciding
how to react and then reacting.

LADIES OF HARLEY I’m flying home from an unexpected trip to Florida to sprinkle my aunt’s ashes. Sharing grief with family has brought me the closure I was seeking. Balancing the sadness is a feeling of comfort and belonging, a new sense of being connected to my roots.
I had forgotten that Aunt Debbie was the pioneer that led my family north to Alaska in 1979. Living so far away, we’re fortunate to have friends that feel like family. We all have the family we’re born with, and the one we build. If we’re lucky those paths overlap
What does any of this have to do with riding? Everything!
Photos were shared with me of my grandfather on Harleys he rode through his life. Pictures of my mom and her siblings happily sitting on his bike just like the ones I have of my kids now. I remember being squished between my grandparents, riding on his Harley. Just yesterday my grannie told me how much she al-ways wanted to ride her own ride, but never did; but I am.
So my aunt gave me one last gift, reuniting me with my family in the South, sharing our history and love of riding. It changes everything to have my own roots, not just chasing Alvin’s passion.
May is Woman’s Riding Month and that’s exactly what I want to do, RIDE!!! So, wherever you are in your journey I wish you safe and memorable rides. See you out there.

SAFETY Aloha All -
What an amazing turnout we had at the HOH on Demo Day!! Awesome weather, cool bikes, outstanding food, and most importantly the fellowship with everyone there.
Last month’s lesson was: Pre-Ride Inspection, T-CLOCS: T-Tires and Wheels, C - Controls, L-Lights and Electrics, O-Oil and Other Fluids, C-Chassis, S-Stands.
This months lesson: Turning (turns, corners and curves)
Turning a motorcycle involves four primary steps: slow, look, press and roll. Al-though in reality these may not be distinct steps, they make a good starting point for learning to ride smoothly and safely through turns, corners and curves. Making good turns takes proper judgment and good timing.
Slow: Reduce speed as needed before entering a turn.
Look: Search through the entire turn and keep your eyes moving. Evaluate the entire turn as soon as pos-sible - surface characteristics, sharpness of the turn, and overall traffic conditions.
Press: To initiate motorcycle lean, press forward on the handgrip in the directions of the turn. This is referred to as counter-steering (the front wheel briefly points in the opposite direction of the turn). Press left handgrip, lean left, go left press right handgrip, lean right, go right.
Roll: Roll on the throttle to keep from losing speed, unless you identify trouble or entered the turn with too much speed. Maintaining or slightly increasing throttle will help you stabilize the motorcycle's suspen-sion. Try to avoid rapid acceleration or deceleration when in a turn.
My fellow riders, this past weekend we had our first motorcycle death of the 2011 season. Please be careful out there utilize SEE, ride your on ride and take responsibility for yourself. Prayers to his family during this tragic event.
Motorcycle Driver Dies in Kenai Peninsula Crash
The Associated Press
6:59 a.m. AKDT, April 26, 2011 KENAI, Alaska— Alaska State Troopers say a 55-year-old motorcy-
cle driver from Kenai died from injuries suffered in a collision with a sport utility vehicle.
Troopers say James Stutsman was not wearing a helmet late Saturday night when he crashed at
the Kenai Spur Highway and Redoubt Avenue.
The driver of the SUV, 26-year-old Thomas Dyer of Kenai, was not injured.
Officers impounded both vehicles. Troopers say the cause of the crash is under investigation.

HOT.
No, I am not talking about the temperature. That would be H.O.G. Officer Training recently
conducted in Reno, Nevada at the end of March.
I was fortunately one of the four of your chapter officers that got to attend H.O.T for the first
time. Boy-o-boy that training was AWSOME! If you ever had any doubt that Harley-Davidson
knows how to put on a conference, let me tell you, they know how and then some!
First of all, we almost did not make it to Reno. After landing in Seattle and arriving at the
Horizon Air gate for our flight into Reno we were told the weather in Reno was not looking
good. They told us that if our flight could not get into Reno, they would drop us in Fresno, California! So, know-
ing that the entire Sierra Nevada mountain range was having an epic snow storm and all the passes were closed, I
asked the nice lady at the gate how were they going to get us to Reno from Fresno if that was were we got dropped.
She said they would bus us to Reno… I informed her that all the highway passes were closed with no forecasted
opening. She was a bit dumbfounded. As it turned out, we were able to land in Reno, but just barely as it was
blowing and snowing sideways and the cloud ceiling was just above minimums.
In the blizzard, we made it to the Nugget Casino hotel check-in counter. As we were unloading our luggage, be-
hind us rolled in a couple of Harley riders who had ridden up to Reno from southern Nevada. I was astonished!
Yes the roads were not frozen and icy, but there was a lot of slush and the blowing snow had completely covered
them. Wow, my hat was off to them for soldiering on in that lousy weather and making it to the Nugget. Amaz-
ingly, the next day the sun came out and all that snow was gone!
First thing the next morning we were served breakfast with a little over 600 of our fellow H.O.G officers, all in
one room. We had officers from all over the western region. After breakfast we gathered in the main ballroom for
the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was a full body experience. There was a fine smoke in the room to
better show off the laser light show going on. Up on the main stage was a few of the new bikes from this years line
up with spot lights on them. Of course there was great music being played and on each side of the main stage were
two large screens with slide show images of motorcycle riding and H.O.G. chapter activities. When the first speak-
ers were about to come on stage, the music was stopped and the sound of Harley-Davidson motorcycle engine rev-
ving up was blasted into the ballroom. The crowd went wild with cheers and applause.
We were introduced to most all of the regional managers, our instructors and support personnel along with sev-
eral inspirational videos. The rest of the weekend was spent in breakout sessions addressing every aspect of H.O.G.
chapter operations. There was so much information available that each of us had to pick what was most appropriate
for our officer position. I of course spent my time in all the financial management sessions.
It was so great to be in sessions with fellow Treasurers and to exchange ideas, experiences and expectations. It
was very much a give and take experience in the sessions and I was sad when the weekend sessions concluded.
The party that they threw for us on Friday night was fantastic! There was a great cover band, a wonderful buffet
and large dance floor. A good time was definitely had by all.
Sadly, it all came to an end on Saturday afternoon with the closing ceremony. We elected to stay in Reno an ex-
tra day to do some sight seeing.
We went to Virginia City, which is about an hour south of Reno. The road to Virginia City is twisty mountain
road that screamed out to be ridden on two wheels. Unfortunately, we were in a car. The whole town is a National
Historic Landmark and it was extremely interesting to walk around and see it first hand. Virginia City is historical
for its silver and gold mines. I really want to go back there on two wheels and do some more exploration.
The four of us that attended this HOG Officer Training all agreed that it was a fantastic experience and well
worth our time. We met so many interesting people and learned of so many great rides and rallies to attend
throughout the western region. Hopefully this training will translate into improvements in our local Chapter 66. It
was an intense weekend of learning, but also very rewarding. I do want to go again next year, it was that much fun!
