Man’s History
Pre-History Paleolithic Neolithic Civilization
• Pre-history - Earliest man to the point where man starts to make tools.
• Paleolithic Age - Old Stone Age
• Neolithic - New Stone Age • Civilization – Man starts
to settle in towns and domesticates animals and crops.
Earliest Man
• Prior to useful speech • Man was a scavenger • Evidence of earliest man in South Africa
– Lucy (1960s) – Other discoveries since pre-date even Lucy – The Real Eve
Paleolithic Age
• Tool making was very rudimentary. • Man was a nomad, following the herds and
the seasons. • Clan/Tribal groupings.
Bronze Age
• Bronze held an advantage over copper due to its durability and ability to hold an edge.
• Bronze is an alloy – An alloy is a mixture of
two metals.
• Bronze – Copper and Tin in an
alloy ratio of 10:1
People, Places, and Things
• Mesopotamia • Fertile Crescent
– Area includes Mesopotamia and extends into Asia Minor (Turkey) and along the coast of the Mediterranean.
People, Places, and Things
• Homo sapiens – Wise or Thinking Man. This is the man to which all of our civilization and great strides can be attributed.
Ancient Egypt
Periods • Old Kingdom (2700-2620
B.C.) about 4700 years ago
• Middle Kingdom (2134-1786 B.C.)
• New Kingdom ( 1575-1087 B.C.)
Became a single nation when upper and Lower Egypt unified
