Please note that as from the start of April, we will revert to a 05.45pm start for our time trial and please note that we wearing some sort of reflective gear and/or light will be compulsory for ALL runners. You can purchase a reflective belt from Julyette for R10, so there is no excuse! It is your responsibility to remain visible and safe. Keep the music out of the ears and please run on the pavements when necessary we like to think that runners own the roads and have right of way, but in reality this is not the case. Please also run in SINGLE FILE. We really do not want any nasty incidents. Our sport in KZN is in quite an interesting state at present. I am sure you also saw the communication from John Hall stating that 2019 would be the last Maritzburg Marathon, while it is clear that the Deloitte Marathon organisation was a shambles and some marathon runners didn’t even get a sachet of water during the entire event. There is much for them to get right for next year’s race. In addition, the new venue of the Umgeni Marathon put a lot of runners off and just as an example HVAC only had one marathon finisher (Well done Robin Soulsby!) This should hopefully place into perspective just how difficult and demanding organising a successful race can be. Peter and his race committee can feel very proud of what they have achieved over many years in hosting a successful Hillcrest Marathon. Of course the ongoing ASA KZNA board Task Team drama continues and legal papers are going back and forth on a regular basis. We are told that the main ASA KZNA board issues will go to arbitration in June. Hopefully we will send the light at the end of the tunnel by then! What is clear is that the KZNA coffers are running dry and the Task Team had to make very last minute travel plans to get the KZN Youth and Junior athletes down to Paarl for the National Champs this week, using the money held in trust at the attorneys. Will be interesting to see if there is any fall out from this. On a far more exciting note, we have had some terrific performances from our members lately. Firstly, Siyanda Mkhize and Bongumusa Zondi have qualified for our “Elite Squad”. Well done! While young Josh Steytler continues to excel in various forms and disciplines in the swim and/or bike and/or run environment. Do yourself a favour and check out some his performances that are regularly posted on our FB page by his dad, Clayton. I cant keep up with just how many medals he has won of late!

Hello my fellow Villagers Very quickly the days are becoming shorter and those long training runs are run in the dark for longer periods….that can only mean one thing – Ultra “season” is around the corner. On the Comrades front, the finish area gazebo/tent has been booked and paid for by HVAC, while we have lined up four very interesting talks in the lead up to Comrades – novices should really take advantage and try to attend them all. In addition, we have confirmed our guest speaker for our Pre-Comrades Pasta Party, and believe me when I tell you that this person has heaps and heaps of experience and has many interesting stories to tell Keep safe out there and keep those injuries at bay! COMRADES NOVICE TRAINING Comrades Novice Training is in full swing - contact Kathy Naylor [email protected]

THE SUBSTITUTION PROCESS

Runners who were unable to enter the 2019 Comrades Marathon during the official entry period at the end of last year are in luck. There is still an opportunity to be part of The Ultimate Human Race on Sunday, 9 June 2019 through the Substitution Process. The 2019 Comrades Marathon Substitution Process officially opens this Friday.

The process runs for an extra two weeks this year, opening on 1 March 2019 and closing on Monday, 15 April 2019. The Substitution Process allows for a runner who has not entered to substitute an entrant who has withdrawn or intends to withdraw from the 2019 Comrades Marathon.

Substitutions can only take effect on a like for like basis, meaning SA runners can only substitute for SA entrants, Rest of Africa (ROA) for other ROA runners and International runners for International entrants.

Prospective substitutes are encouraged to do their applications online. www.comrades.com Alternatively, they may send their completed applications via email to [email protected] or hand deliver them to Comrades House in Pietermaritzburg.
