ELITE SQUAD Announcement: we would like to congratulate Derek Wasserfall on qualifying for the HVAC Elite Squad, and for signing up as part of the squad on 31 May. Derek ran a 1:19 half marathon at Woodview Starling Plumbers 21km. It is great for us as a club to acknowledge a man who is a loyal Villager, a fantastic runner on both road and trail, provides valuable input when asked and gives a lot back to the sport. Well done Derek!

THREE FALLS TRAIL RUN

Sunday 5 August 2018 - Three Falls Trail Run – There has been a great response from our

members and HVAC can boast a large number of entries for this event. Entries are sold out but

there is still the possibility of getting a substitute entry, or to be placed on the waiting list! It's a

tough 18.6km but no one cares what time you do. It's also for a great cause - all expenses are

covered by sponsors and every cent of the entry fee is ploughed into the reserve. There is also a

6.5km Fun Walk – enter on the day. The start and finish is at Forest View Primary and the

Villagers gazebo will be there (along with a cooler box and beverages of course). Please

take part in your 2018 Hillcrest Marathon T-shirt if you have one! Food will be sold by the school's

tuck shop. Friends and family welcome of course. More details at www.kloofconservancy.org.za

LETTER FROM A HILLCREST RESIDENT – PLEASE WILL ALL MEMBERS TAKE NOTE Hi Please, through you, can we urgently request that Villagers have a session with your members on the correct use of the Hillcrest roads when training. As an ex road runner (Golden Reef) we had a set of rules that allowed for a harmonious relationship with other road users. I am making this request after a number of incidents in the past couple of weeks which were totally unnecessary. We all know that there is virtually no twilight in Durban and it becomes dark quite rapidly, and combined with poor lighting on a number of our roads makes visibility very poor. I am a regular user of the roads around the Sports Club and have had a number incidents involving Villagers runners on Thursday evenings which have been unnecessary

1. ALL runners must have adequate reflectors or similar devices to make themselves visible. This must be compulsory.

2. Run on only the correct side of the road and when in a group don’t split up across the road which in many parts are narrow. Particularly those who do warm up runs.

3. Do not be abusive to motorists when, because of the lack of reflectors on the runners, put their lights on bright so as to see what the shape is approaching them.

4. When there are 2 cars driving in opposite directions down the road, runners need to move onto the verge ( not the cars) to let the cars pass each other.

5. If possible, have a senior runner at the head and rear and within the main training group to guide the runners and enforce the above.

We all don’t want an unnecessary accident. We all realise the runners need to use the roads, but it is not for their sole benefit and they also must respect the motorists that use the roads Thanking you in advance Kind regards, Rod Skjolde 082 320 3284

Dear Trail Runners and Walkers,

The very popular Mandela Day Trail Run will be staged for the 5th time this year on 25th August at

the Nelson Mandela Capture Site just outside Howick.

Celebrate Madiba

As South Africans, we look forward to any opportunity to celebrate the incredible legacy left to us

by Nelson Mandela, and as trail enthusiasts what better way to do this than out on the trails

surrounding one of the most significant landmarks in the history of this remarkable man and our

country.

Fast and flowing

Runners and walkers can look forward to non-technical, farm-style trails through the beautiful,

undulating Midlands landscape. There is a distance to suit every fitness level with 4, 8 and 15km

to choose from.

Whilst many will simply be out to enjoy a relaxing morning on the trails soaking up the Madiba

magic, the event also attracts elite athletes, and the racing at the sharp end of the field will be fast

and intense!
