Robust Mission andA Balanced Budget

It takes $50,000 a month to keep our church moving forward, and the goal is within sight: robust mission on a balanced bud-get! We’re so grateful to you who have already made your com-mitment for next year.

Pledge cards continue to be available on the table just outside the sanctuary, and in the church office. You can put your completed card in the offering plate on Sunday, or drop it off at the office.

If you haven’t yet made your pledge for 2018, please, let us hear from you before the end of the month. We’re looking for all of our members and friends who participate in this ministry to share in its financial support and, if you did pledge for 2017 but haven’t yet committed to 2018, we’re asking you to consider a 5% increase over last year.

Praise God, and Hurrah! Our stewardship campaign for 2018 is off to a great start, and we are excited to think of the goals we will reach and the important work we will do when all of our members and friends have made their financial pledge. Making a pledge (even if it’s for less than what you expect to be able to give) helps to define the budget and what the church can do in the coming year. Pledge cards con-tinue to be available on the table just outside the sanctuary, and in the church office.

If you haven’t already, please consider setting up an automatic payment. It’s easy and very secure to arrange a direct debit from your checking or savings account. You can put the direct debit information on a pledge card or, at any time, you can use the simple form that’s available in the church office.

Out of the Office hours with Josh resumes on Mondays this Advent. Join Josh at The Office on December 4, 11

and 18 from 6:30PM - 8:00PM

Upcoming Blood Drive Dates: April 15, 2018 - 8am - Noon

Joy of Sharing Cookbook

From one very satisfied customer: “What a great cookbook!!! I just paged thru each page. Love the surprises as you go thru from Bob Graham's cocktail to previous members recipes to humor to really awesome recipe ideas!! It is a treasure!!” -Jane Murtaugh

Frequent comments – “It is so professional!” Yes, indeed, it is. The committee spent hours and hours on the creation of this cookbook. Plan to spend an hour or two going from front to back, as you read a bit of history about our church, a funny story from Pastor Dave, the dedication to our beloved Mrs. “G”, and then on to favorite recipes submitted by so many of our church members and friends.

The pictures assembled therein of some favorite events within our church during the past few years only add to the pure pleasure of this book. Many thanks to Reidar and Laura Hahn for the cover photo of most of the cooks who made contributions of recipes of their favorite everyday and holiday dishes.

Only a few weeks left before Christmas. Make out your list, then pick up your cookbooks on Sunday. On December 3 look for Julie Griffith and Carol Ludemann; on December 10 – Edy Finley and Kay Cameron. On December 17 – the last Sunday before Christmas – we’ll have the cookbook table staffed for those last-minute purchases. $15 each, cash or check made payable to Women’s Fellowship.

Think “outside the box” – a cookbook would make a wonderful hostess gift, birthday present, that “little something extra” instead of bath beads or a handkerchief. Questions? See or call Pat Kitner – 630.584.1205 [email protected]

January 19th: THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG (2008) by Muriel Barbery; discussion at the home of Josephine and Peter Ball

In a bourgeois apartment building in Paris, we encoun-ter Renée, an intelligent, philosophical, and cultured concierge who masks herself as the stereotypical uned-ucated “super” to avoid suspicion from the building’s pretentious inhabitants. Also living in the building is Paloma, the adolescent daughter of a parliamentarian, who has decided to commit suicide on her thirteenth birthday because she cannot bear to live among the rich. Although they are passing strangers, it is through Renée’s observations and Paloma’s journal entries that The Elegance of the Hedgehog reveals the absurd lives of the wealthy. That is until a Japanese businessman moves into the building and brings the two characters together. A critical success in France…“Resistance is futile. You might as well buy it before someone recom-mends it for your book group. Its charm will make you say yes.”—The Guardian.

March 16th: THE ART OF HEARING HEARTBEATS (2012) by Jan-Philipp Sendker; dis-cussion at the home of Trish and J.T. Thompson

A poignant and inspirational love story set in Burma, The Art of Hearing Heartbeats spans the decades between the 1950s and the present. When a success-ful New York lawyer suddenly disappears without a trace, neither his wife nor his daughter Julia has any idea where he might be…until they find a love letter he wrote many years ago, to a Burmese woman they have never heard of. Intent on solving the mystery and coming to terms with her father’s past, Julia decides to travel to the village where the woman lived. There she uncovers a tale of unimaginable hardship, resilience, and passion that will reaffirm the reader’s belief in the power of love to move mountains…a huge hit in Europe…“A beautiful tale bound to enchant readers on this side of the Atlantic.”—Booklist.

Novel Approaches 2017-2018May 18th: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD (2016) by Colson Whitehead; discussion at the home of Marilyn and Dave Schave

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and #1 New York Times best seller. Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an out-cast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood—where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned…though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted. In Whitehead’s ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor—engineers and conductors oper-ate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. As Whitehead brilliantly re-creates the unique terrors for black people in the pre–Civil War era, his narrative seamlessly weaves the saga of America from the brutal importation of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day.

Christmas PageantMark Your Calendars! On December 17th, the Sunday School children will be asked to participate in a Christmas Pageant directly after church. Rehearsals will take place during Sunday school on December 10th and 17th. If you haven’t been to church in awhile, but want to have your child participate, we are happy to have them! The kids have been practicing their songs for over a month in preparation for this pageant and they are getting excited for the big show. We need all the church members we can get to stay after the church service to come see these kids perform. We are asking that the church members sing along with our Sunday School kids, so make sure you have your singing voice ready! “Tickets” for the performance will go home in the bulletin on December 10th and December 17th. If you would like your child to be a part of this show just make sure that your child is at church on December 10th and/or December 17th. If you have questions, please email Kim Arneson at [email protected].

4th/5th Grade & 6th/7th Grade Sunday SchoolIn the month of December, we will be changing up our 4/5 & 6/7 Sunday School program. We are going to start a monthly service project with the 4/5 & 6/7 grades together. One Sunday a month, both classes will join forces to work on a project for the local community or maybe even our own church building. We look forward to working with these kids side by side and making a difference in our world together. In addition to this, 6/7 will also have a youth group Sunday as well, instead of a Bible lesson. We are working on hammering out the details for this program, but are hopeful that this will help prepare these kids for Confirmation and our GF youth group down the line. We are then asking that the other two Sundays of the month, that the 6/7 grade join everyone in the congregation during our worship service. Weekly emails will be sent designating where children should be on a Sunday morning as well as listed in our bulletin. This is a learning curve for us all, so we appreciate your patience as we try new methods of engaging the youth of our church during our Sunday School programs. If you have any questions, please email Kim Arneson at [email protected].

Cookies With SantaPlease join us after the service and the Christmas Pageant for Cookies with Santa. Santa will be visiting us in Rodg-ers Hall on December 17th at approximately 11:15am. We would love for any of our bakers of the CUCC to help us out and bring 1-2 dozen Christmas cookies to have with our hot cocoa bar. Sign up to bring cookies is on each of the Congre-gational Life Committee bulletin boards.

Each child (and maybe adult?) will get a chance to tell Santa what they want for Christmas, they will receive a small token, and there will be a photo opportunity. Please consider stay-ing after the Christmas Pageant for this fun holiday CUCC tradition!

Help is needed in the nursery for the 5pm and 8pm Christmas Eve services. We’re looking for both an

adult/college student as well as high school helper if possible. Contact Annie Adams if you are willing at

Reverse Advent CalendarEach month our church brings in food and other items to help people who live very close to where we live. Sometimes these people don’t have enough money to buy some of the things they need. During this Christmas time while we celebrate Jesus’ birth, we remember that he taught us to love everyone even those we don’t know. The calendar on the next page lists items that are much needed. Take a look at the items and pick whatever you would like to buy. If you would like, decorate a box to put the items you buy in it. You might want to keep it under your Christmas tree. Bring your items to Sunday school before December 31 and give them to Miss Kim. The Mission Committee will then be sure your donated items get to our friends who need them at the Salva-tion Army.

Night Ministry Stockings A Big Thank You!

The Mission Committee would like to thank every-one who sewed stockings, donated items, and helped

fill our stockings for Night Ministry. With your generosity and help from Manna funds to purchase additional items, our Sunday schoolers were able to fill all 52 stockings that were sewn! These stockings

will go a long way to make this season, built on Jesus’ love, a lot better for many of our sisters and brothers.

Early on after joining the church, I volunteered to make sandwiches, and helped bag items for Night Ministry. After a while, I just stopped. No particular reason. A recent letter from Wyonne peaked my interest. I had never considered going into the city and handing out food. I am more of a background worker. I was apprehensive. When we arrived at Humboldt Park, people were already there anticipating our arrival. Once we pulled up, a gentleman was right there at the back doors. He was looking for a coat. They were not shy and were anxious to get the food. One by one they came to each station. They were polite, grateful and appreciative of our presence. Many were familiar with each other and would gather to talk until they could come through the line again. I am quiet but I observed. I was curious of the older daughter filling her bag and her Mother’s bag . Her Mother in the background jabbering in a language I did not understand but her daughter smiling and laughing at times. There were not small children but a few younger adults. What was their story? Others, I wondered if they had been in the service. I was impressed with the caring individuals on the Night Ministry Van and the services they provide. Here I am handing out food. Am I cold? You bet. I have the comfort of knowing I will be getting into a warm van, walking into a warm home, curling up with a blanket and my kitty on my lap around a cozy fire. Those I saw tonight do not have that luxury but I know many felt fortunate and thankful for the food and coats receivedOn this experience, I cannot say now how different I am….. still reflecting. But will pray and ask God to show me the way to be a better servant to him.

Kay VargasonP.S. The gentleman who was looking for a coat received one. Cheetos Puffs were a big hit and we ran out. So…. next time when I am at Costco, I will be filling my cart.

Yes, we’re still looking for your donations of pop tops! Until infinity, and beyond………….. thanks so much for everyone’s contributions. It seems like such a little thing to do – tear off the tab from drink cans, soup cans, etc., but when you put them all together – wow!  Makes a big difference in the lives of families whose children are hospitalized. Put your pop tabs in the little green bag on the hutch outside the office, or put them in my mail box in the office.  Many, many thanks!

Thank you so very much!Pat Kitner, for the StC Golden K Kiwanis Club
