Every year they fl ock to performances of Handel’s “Messiah” – musicians, vocalists, members of the audience – never seeming to tire of the experience.

“It’s the music that is so wonderful and so inspiring,” says Daniel J. McNabb, “Messiah” director at First Presbyterian Church, Michi-gan City, for the past 45 years. “That’s what people feel every year. The music inspires us over and over and over. The marriage be-tween text and music is so strong.”

Messiah Continued from Page 1

Soloists returning to Michigan City for the “Mes-siah” include Kim Jones, soprano, and Matt Daniel, tenor, both Lyric Opera performers who appeared this summer at International Friendship Gardens. Jones is a Chicagoan who has sung with opera com-panies in Houston, Paris, Tokyo, and radio orches-tras in Germany and Denmark, as well as the Mich-igan City Chamber Music Festival. Daniel, a South Bend resident and music instructor, frequently per-forms the “Messiah” with other ensembles, includ-ing the Elkhart Symphony Orchestra.

Internationally acclaimed baritone Robert Orth, a longtime friend of McNabb’s, will also return for

talent, was persuaded to pursue a career in music. He spent four years traveling and studying in Italy, and during this time he began to compose operas in the Italian style.

In 1711, when Handel was just 26 years old, his fi rst opera, Rinaldo, opened to great acclaim in Lon-don. He then wrote an Ode for the Queen’s Birthday, and was given an annual allowance by Queen Anne. He spent the rest of his life in England, composing over 40 operas and many pieces for the royal court.

English audiences became disenchanted with Italian opera, according to music historians, be-cause of “their unintelligible language being sung

Today, Michigan City’s “Messiah” has a 135-mem-ber choir and a 45-piece orchestra, plus organ and harpsichord. Vicky Warkentien, director of music at Bethel College, Mishawaka, is assisting McNabb with this year’s performance. The fi rst violin sec-tion is headed by Monica Schaefer, concert master, and the second violin section by Nic Orbovic. John Remmel is the organist and Lee Meyer plays the harpsichord.

Rehearsals have already begun. “That fi rst re-hearsal is like a homecoming,” McNabb says. “It’s the biggest high I get from anything all year. People who haven’t seen each other since the last ‘Messiah’ hug one another and carry on; it’s like a family re-union, an annual tradition.”

Handel’s “Messiah,” one of the world’s most popu-lar musical compositions, is an oratorio based on a biblical libretto, relating the life of Christ the Sav-ior. Though Handel was born in Germany, he lived in England for almost 50 years and composed most of his works, including “Messiah,” in the English language. The oratorio also shows the infl uence of the composer’s years in Italy, where he developed a great love of Italian opera and its use of sopranos and tenors in important solo roles.

this year’s performance. Orth was named “Artist of the Year” by both New York City Opera and Seattle Opera. He has sung for almost every major opera company in the United States, including those in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston, Miami, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Boston.

The mezzo soprano will be Colleen Lovenello of Chesterton.

“The soloists contribute their own interpretations to the music,” McNabb says. “Each performance will be a little different,” a factor which contributes to its enduring appeal.

“Messiah” expenses are almost entirely covered by donations. It has become a tradition to make donations “in memory of ’ or “in honor of ’ a favor-ite person. Michigan City audiences also follow the practice observed worldwide, of standing through-out the Hallelujah chorus. According to tradition, King George II rose to his feet at the fi rst notes of this triumphant chorus, and the entire audience followed, remaining standing until the end of the piece.

by artists of questionable morals.” Handel then turned to compositions more appealing to the mid-dle classes, such as English oratorios, and is given credit for having “democratized music.” He was a controversial fi gure, however, often criticized by the clergy for writing biblical dramas that were to be performed in secular theatres.

“Messiah,” his most famous oratorio, is a medi-tation on the life of Christ the Savior. It is based on a libretto by Charles Jennens, mostly of verses from the King James Bible. It was fi rst performed

in Dublin in 1742, at a charity event organized to free 142 men from debtors’ prison. Praised by Lord Kinnoul for “excellent entertainment,” Handel re-sponded, “My lord, I should be sorry that I only en-tertained them. I wish to make men better.”

Handel, a devout Lutheran, composed “Messiah” in a 24-day period of religious and emotional fervor. The piece established his preeminent position in the annals of music history. He was buried in Westmin-ster Cathedral, with over 3,000 persons in atten-dance at his funeral.

Dunes Theatre Holiday Pizza PartySun., Dec. 13, 2:00-4:00 p.m. (Indiana time), The

Dunes Summer Theatre is hosting a Holiday Pizza Party at Miller Pizza by the Beach for kids, ages 7 to 12 and their parents, who may be interested in joining the Dunes winter theatre session. This is an opportunity to catch up with old friends from last summer, maybe meet some new ones and discuss upcoming productions. Perhaps there will even be a little impromptu script reading.

The Dunes is planning a production of “Aesop’s Fables” in February. Don’t worry!! Coming to the pizza party does not automatically mean you have to sign up for the winter season. They would like to hear your ideas about the coming 2010 summer season as well. All are welcome: returnees and new-bies, or those just curious about the acting program. RSVP’s to [email protected] are encour-aged but not necessary. You’ll be able to sign your children up if you wish, or there will be fl yers to take home and peruse; and you can sign up later by email. All details will be given at the party.

Miller Pizza by the Beach is located in Karwick Plaza right next to Al’s Supermarket.

Singer/Actor Tom Wopat at AcornSaturday, December 12th, 8 p.m. MI timeTom Wopat Concert (star of Broadway and Dukes

of Hazzard) at The Acorn Theater, 107 Generations Dr., Three Oaks, MI

Tickets: $35; reserve at 269/756-3879 or www.acorntheater.com

Critically acclaimed and Tony-nominated singer and actor Tom Wopat celebrated the 100th birthday of composer Harold Arlen with the February 2005 release of Dissertation on the State of Bliss, a col-lection of Arlen favorites and rarities. Since then, Wopat has released a collection of music that really swings! Consider It Swung is his eighth studio al-bum.

Wopat got his start on Broadway in the musical “I Love My Wife” in 1977 and has never strayed very far from the theatre. He appeared in “Annie Get Your Gun” opposite Bernadette Peters, in stage revivals of “Chicago” and “42nd Street” and more recently in David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross.”

Wopat fi rst started singing and dancing in high school musicals, and studied music at the Univer-sity of Wisconsin before making his television de-but in 1978. He starred in -- and directed -- several episodes of the popular “Dukes of Hazzard,” playing Luke Duke in the show, which ran from 1979-1985. After the series ended, Wopat made his triumphant return to Broadway (“Annie Get Your Gun”), and continued to appear on television (Cybill, Home Im-provement, and hosting his own show on TNN/The Nashville Network). Oliver Mansion Decorated for HolidaysIn 1897, when the J. D. Oliver family celebrated

their fi rst Yuletide season in their new home, Cop-shaholm, they began a family tradition of placing their Christmas tree in the den. Now part of the Center for History, Copshaholm continues to be decorated for the holidays. Through January 3, visi-tors to Copshaholm, the Oliver mansion, can see 16 Christmas trees as well as festooned fi replace man-tels throughout the 38-room home. Tour times are Mon.-Sat., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and Sunday, 1 & 2 p.m. Admission is $8/adults, $6.50/seniors, $5/youth 6-17, and free/members.

Copshaholm was home to the J. D. family, who moved into their new home at 808 West Washington in South Bend, IN, on January 1, 1897. Copshaholm, as they later named it, was designed by Charles Alonzo Rich of New York and built in 1895-96. The Victorian mansion would be home to the Oliver fam-ily for the next 75 years. Copshaholm’s furnishings are original, showing the house as it appeared when the Oliver family lived there. J. D. Oliver was presi-dent of the Oliver Chilled Plow Works, located in South Bend. The company was founded by J.D.’s father, James Oliver, inventor of the chilled plow. Copshaholm and the Historic Oliver Garden are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For nearly fi ve decades during the last century, area residents and visitors congregated and danced in Silver Beach’s original, wood-fl oored Shadowland Ballroom. At ten cents a dance, the hall was the entertainment centerpiece of southwest Michigan. The New Shadowland Ballroom, complete with a coved ceiling and a wood fl oor, which includes a sec-tion of the original wood fl oor, is reminiscent of the original attraction.

The theme “Everything Old is New Again” will be brought to life for the evening. Lavish decorations will create a nostalgic atmosphere, as will “Ciga-rette Girls”, in full 1940s era costume, selling candy cigarettes and chocolate cigars. A palm reader will also be on hand to provide insights as to what to expect in the coming year.

There will be an open bar with specialty drinks available, including a Cotton Candy Martini, paying homage to the old Silver Beach Amusement Park.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and this toe-tapping event will conclude at 12:30 a.m. Tickets $150 per person, $40 of which is tax deductible. Tickets are available at the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra Offi ce at 269.982.4030 or online at www.smso.org

Fernwood Yule Appeals To All Agesby William F. Keefe

eartwarming sessions with Santa?? Holiday shopping where each gift has seasonal magic?

Old and new holiday traditions like these are helping fashion yet another enchanting Yule season at the Fern-wood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve. The December program high-lights range from wizard-level ice carv-ing demonstrations to face-to-face se-ances with Santa and on to music in the Clark Gallery between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. on each December Sunday.

As in past years, reports Jan Ferris, Fernwood’s Special Projects Manager, natural materials adorn the center’s halls inside and out in the rich seasonal mode originated by Fernwood founder Kay Boydston. The effect is to offer “in-spiration to visitors open to decorating ideas for their homes” while also creat-ing a colorful wonderland.

The natural materials include crafted evergreen boughs and various other cut and arranged ele-ments, noted Ms. Ferris.

The Santas standing in for the Master Santa at the North Pole are also keeping busy, as is their cus-tom, on the weekends preceding Christmas. Young-sters with confi dential lists for Santa can dine with the Jolly Spirit at 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m breakfast on Saturday, December 19.

Santa’s schedule will have Mr. Claus on duty also from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on both Saturdays and Sun-days, December 12 and 13, and 19 and 20.

What is Christmas without lights? Answering that call of Yuletide beauty, Ms. Ferris and her help-

A young Fernwood fan takes advantage of a once-a-year chance to make a case for some badly needed Yule gifts. The concerned Santa also goes by the name Dick Schinkel.

ers haven’t forgotten special illumination for the Christmas holidays.

“Miles of…lighting will give way to tastefully lit highlights around the Visitor Center and nearby gardens…,” reveals a Yule announcement. “In this spirit, complimentary strands of LED lights will be distributed to the fi rst 50 visitors each Saturday and Sunday in December, courtesy of sponsor Indi-ana Michigan Power.”

December visiting hours will be Tuesdays through Fridays: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sat-urdays: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and Sundays: noon to 6:00 p.m.

Santa’s Special Events on Tap

For those interested, a number of guidelines help round out the December schedule. Some of these replicate features or arrangements that visitors will recall from earlier Yule Seasons. Among the special items are:

-- Beginning November 20 and continuing until January 31, 2010, an exhibit of watercolor paint-ings by Cyndy Callog is open for viewing in the Clark Gallery.

-- Because seating is limited in the Fernwood Gallery for the breakfast with Mr. Claus on De-cember 19, advance registration for the event will be required by the Friday prior to the breakfast. The fee for the breakfast will be $12.00 for adults and $8.00 for children aged 11 and younger. Notes the Fernwood schedule: “Santa’s helpers will be on hand to help young attendees make a craft (at

breakfast) that he or she can take home and hang on the Christmas tree.”

-- Musicians and vocalists slated to perform from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on December Sundays include Molly Moon and Riley O’Connor on December 13; and the “Mockingbird,” featuring John Tolhuizen with Pat and Paul Banks on December 20.

-- On the principle that there’s strength in num-bers, three proxies will share the important Kris Kringle duties during Fernwood’s December “ap-pointments with Santa” sessions. The three are Jim Crocker, Dick Schinkel, and Robert Mangold.

All three understand from their North Pole train-ing that the messages they receive from their tod-dler interviewees must go special delivery to San-ta’s workshop.

Ice as an Art Medium

Two December Saturdays--the 12th and 19th--boast demonstrations of a skill that many consider an art form. “Just as an artist works magic on a blank canvas, ice carvers work their magic on a big block of ice,” notes the Christmas schedule. And in case an invitation is needed, “Come watch expert ice carvers create works of art in ice…, or come view the creations during the week as long as they last!”

The tentative schedules of the ice carvers for De-cember 12 are Randy Veldman, Vance Price, and Rich Eberly.

Holiday schedules permitting, Howard Busfi eld will entertain visitors with his expert transforma-tions of an ice block on December 19.

A series of Fernwood Visitor Alerts for the Christ-mas season (and later) offers the following tips: Shop in the Fernwood Gift Shop and Outdoor Gar-den Shop for the perfect Yule gift… The Fernwood Botanical Garden will be closed December 24 and 25 and December 31 and January 1 for Christmas and New Year’s…

It might be called close order drill. Wielding a specialty tool, the ice carver shapes by cutting and gouging on the ice block,

fi nally fi nishing with the fi gure he’s got in mind. (Image courtesy Fernwood Botanical Garden; Jan Ferris photo)

Cold weather, cold work. An ice carver wields the saw much as an artist might wield a brush--and the creations come out of the blocks as works of

art. (Image courtesy Fernwood Botanical Garden; Jan Ferris photo)

LaPorte Co. Historical Society MuseumHoliday Events and Displays at the MuseumThe La Porte County Historical Society Museum

is featuring “A Movieland Christmas” as its theme for holiday displays this year. Throughout the muse-um, located at 2405 Indiana Ave. in La Porte, scenes from favorite movies with a Christmas theme will be depicted.

In the 1950’s Living Room exhibit, reminders of the perennial favorite “A Christmas Story” will be on view. Period clothing from the museum collec-tion will be used on mannequins to illustrate scenes from other popular fi lms such as “White Christmas” and “Christmas in Connecticut.” In addition, items from the locally-produced movie Prancer will be ex-hibited, including a scale model of the farmhouse actually used in fi lming.

The Giese Miniature Church, a local tradition over 60 years old, will be displayed now through the middle of January. The little church features a mechanized choir that marches down the aisle, a minister who bows and kneels, and miniature chandeliers and colored lights. Christmas music and a short sermon, (de-livered by the voice of La Porte’s own Ken Coe,) round out this holiday treat.

On Sat., Dec. 12, the mu-seum will feature A Visit with St. Nicholas! from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Cre-ated especially for children and their families, the visit gives kids a chance to sit on Santa’s lap, and enjoy complimentary cookies and punch.

At 1:00 p.m. on Dec. 12, the unveiling of the mu-seum’s newest attraction, Fischerville Railroad, will

take place. Recently donated by the family of Dr. Allan Fischer who created it, this N-Scale model railroad layout encompasses mountains, tunnels, bridges, and a town complete with business and residential districts. A member of the Duneland Model Railroad Club will be on hand to give a brief program.

The LaPorte Co. Historical Society Museum, 2405 Indiana Ave., La Porte, is open Tues.–Sat., 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Phone for admission prices at 219-324-6767, or visit www.laportecountyhistory.org. The facility is accessible to those with disabilities.

Oh What A Feast We HadTradition, being thankful for our families, help-

ing each other and loving each other is what was celebrated at Notre Dame Pre School. On Wednes-day November 25th an early Thanksgiving was held by the Pre Schoolers.

Everyone was dressed for the occasion and happy to prepare the meal. The morning was started off by reviewing the menu. We prepared everything with the exception of the meat. The delicious tur-key (chicken leg) was provided by our friends at Al’s. It was exciting to prepare the corn bread, corn, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and butter. Each item was made fresh the morning of the feast in our very own Parish Center Kitchen; just down the hall from our classroom.

Everything (corn bread, cranberry sauce and set-ting the table) was prepared by a team, but the but-ter took all of us. We make our own butter by put-ting heavy whipping cream in a jar and shaking it over and over and over again. As each person took their turn to shake, the rest counted to ten, in Eng-lish, Spanish and Chinese. We were amazed at the fi nished product and you would be too...so give it a try for your Thanksgiving Feast. It is quite yummy on the corn bread. We hope you give this a try, it just might be a new tradition for you! We love it and are happy to share it with you.

For the fi rst time ever I spent most of Cyber Mon-day on the internet, searching for bargains. Since I was not in the market for electronics, my shopping adventure did not lead anywhere. Which is prob-ably a good thing, since I have been exhorting the message about shopping locally in this column for years. Thus, I betrayed my own advice and wasted much of a day glued to my monitor, all for naught.

What I did not do, and should have, was to go back to columns I wrote in March about fi nding coupons, rebates, discount codes and alerts for good bargains. I would have discovered that Jet Blue was offering excellent prices for one day only on Cyber Monday for one-way travel. The best Cyber Monday deals may have been hidden from the masses of on-line shoppers, whereas those insider bargain-hunt-er websites would have been a better choice than a Google or Bing search.

All this brings me to the topics I will be covering this week and next. I’m taking a second look at all the websites I’ve mentioned here since January, and I’m picking my favorites from each month’s listings. (All of the listings are archived by month at http://cyberscribbles.wordpress.com).

Just one thing I want to do before getting into this week’s site reviews. I need to apologize to those of you who used Care2.com to send cards, based on my recommendations. Actually, the site is fi ne and the e-cards are great. But unless you want an emailbox full of messages from Care2, use a dummy email address before signing up for their free ser-vice. Okay. Let’s get on with this week’s reviews.

February 2009Two websites I mentioned popped out at me right

away. The extremely useful Gasbuddy.com is a money saver, if you don’t mind driving a few more blocks to fi nd the lowest gas prices in your area. Bless those local spotters who take the time to log their fi ndings on Gasbuddy for the rest of us to use.

Another site that I use frequently, and that you will like if you are an avid newspaper junkie—is ThePaperboy.com. If I want to know what’s hap-pening in another part of the country, I can have The Paperboy lead me to links to local papers just about anywhere. And by the way, The Beacher is listed there.

March 2009If I had remembered to check BargainBriana.

com, I would have known about that Jet Blue of-fer on Cyber Monday only. But for as long as I have been writing this column, I have visited thousands of websites and just cannot remember all of them (nor do I bookmark that many of them). That’s why having the archive on the CyberScribbles blog is so useful.

StillTasty.com is another useful site that I had forgotten. It tells you how long it’s safe to keep cer-tain foodstuffs before they go bad.. Another site that fi ts the usefulness category is CriminalSearches.com, if you are an employer or are perhaps think-ing about pursuing a relationship with someone you just met. Be warned that this is a bare bones effort, in beta. It’s free, and that’s nice. But if you are real-ly serious, you’ll probably need to dig much deeper, or use a fee-based background check service.

We didn’t get too far this week. I see that I’m out of room. Next week I will continue with what I con-sider the Best of 2009 sites mentioned in this col-umn this year.

Famly Film Series Presents “Elf”Westchester Public Library’s Family Film series

takes place on the second Saturday of the month at Hageman Library, 100 Francis St., Porter, at 2 p.m. from September through May. The fi lm on Decem-ber 12 is “Elf.” Films shown by the library are free of charge and open to the public.

When he was a baby, Buddy (Will Farrell) acci-dentally crawled into Santa’s bag and was taken to the North Pole and raised as an elf. As a grown-up, Buddy realizes that he is different from the other elves, and sets out for New York to meet his real father.

Unfortunately, the spirit of Christmas seems to be missing from those he meets, including his own family. Buddy works successfully to bring the Christmas spirit back.

“Elf” is rated PG and has a running time of 97 minutes. The family fi lm for January will be “Up,” rated PG. For more information, phone Hageman Library at 219/926-9080.

Travels with Charley:Getting Down to Downtown Elkhart for the 31st Elkhart Juried Regional

by Charles McKelvy

Top off your holiday festivities with a feast for the eyes at the Midwest Museum of American Art in downtown Elkhart where the 31st Elkhart Jur-ied Regional Exhibition continues through Sunday, January 3, 2010.

That’s right, the largest awards show in Indiana continues through all the holidays and into the New Year. And Sundays are free, compliments of Peggy Weed in memory of her late husband and corporate art patron, Robert Weed.

Natalie and I naturally took advantage of Mrs. Weed’s kind offer on a recent Sunday and so saw 163 amazing works of art by 123 totally talented artists from Indiana and Michigan.

Where to begin?Well, how about with the bronze wall relief sculp-

ture titled: Gaia by Dora Natella of Granger, Indi-ana. Dora’s day was defi nitely made at the show’s opening when the jury selected her haunting study of—well—of Gaia herself as the Alice Skoglund Me-morial Best of Show Award.

wonder you won the Mary Feddersen Memorial Award for Photography for your appropriately titled Love Creek.

Had we had the money, we would have purchased Mr. Liechty’s photograph on the spot, but we were on the look-don’t-buy budget plan, so we browsed on up to the second fl oor galleries where we loved ev-erything we saw, particularly Brooks Cashbaugh’s oil on canvas titled: There Will be a Short Intermis-sion Between Reels. In the Elkhart painter’s world, shadowy movie goers are shown exiting a magical theater with the word “GARDEN” on the marquee. It made me think of James Dean for some reason, and Natalie just liked it because it was a wonderful painting.

Hey, we liked everything we saw, and we would have photographed everything we saw for your viewing pleasure, but that was not allowed, out of deference to the artists.

So, out of deference to those talented neighbors of ours, why not take time out of your busy holiday schedule for some really great art. And be sure and spend some time looking at the museum’s perma-nent collection, particularly that which is securely housed in the Paul D. Keefe Gallery. All right, the Midwest Museum of American Art occupies what was once a bank, and the aforementioned gallery artfully displays its treasures in—you guessed it—the bank vault. Built by the York Safe and Lock Company of York, Pennsylvania, the vault was found to be too heavy to move, so the museum turned it into the most unusual gallery anywhere.

A curator said I could photograph Dora Natella’s gorgeous Gaia for the Beacher, and I hope I did Madam Natella justice with my humble effort.

So enjoy my image of her sculpture on these pages, but, better yet, motor east and south over to Elkhart and spend some time contemplating the state of our planet as you commune with Dora Na-tella’s bronze wall relief.

And then spend the morning or afternoon with each and every one of the other 162 works of awe-some art.

Being birders, Natalie and I naturally enjoyed Elkhart photographer Roderick Liechty’s represen-tation of our beloved Love Creek which he present-ed as an archival digital color photograph mounted on a curved armature. Way cool, Roderick, and no

And, they had the good sense, or cents, to display a portion of the late Dr. William Luther’s collection of rare coins and bills under lock and key in the

Show Award.

How many art museums have a gallery in a safe? The Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart does.

vault. There are also photographs and paintings of the American West as captured by various artists in the 19th and 20th centuries. A must see at any price, and on Sundays, it’s all free.

And by all, I do mean that the Midwest Museum of American Art has some works in their permanent collection that are worthy of any major art museum. The Midwest Museum is in the major leagues, and their dazzling annual Juried Regional is proof of that.

And it’s all there for you to see until January 3.

The sign of a wonderful art exhibition in Elkhart.

And so is all of downtown Elkhart, which is defi -nitely on the rebound. We took a post-art walk and discovered a bustling night spot right down South Main Street from the Midwest Museum. Beyond that, there was the National New York Central Railroad Museum across the tracks at 721 S. Main Street, and back the other way we were happy to see that the celebrated Elco Performing Arts Center at 410 S. Main Street is undergoing a major renova-tion and is scheduled to reopen for children’s the-atre, concerts, and entertainment in late 2010. In time, we hope, for the 32nd Elkhart Juried Regional Exhibition.

Celebrate Elkhart’s railroad

heritage by visiting the

National New York Central

Railroad Museum next to these

tracks. Phone: 574-294-3001.

We’ll be there for sure, and we hope you’ll make time to take in the 31st Elkhart Juried Regional, which, again, is on view through Sunday, January 3, 2010.

The Midwest Museum of American Art is open from 10 AM to 4 PM (Eastern), Tuesday through Friday; Saturday and Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens, $2 for college students, and $1 for students 5 to 18. Family admission for groups of three or more is $7. Sundays, again, are free thanks to Peggy Weed.

For more information, please contact the museum in care of: 574-293-6660 or on-line at: www.MID-WESTMUSEUM.US. And for all the holiday events in downtown Elkhart, visit: DowntownElkhart.org.

Art abounds in downtown Elkhart. Visit Downtown Elkhart.org for all that’s happening in that happening place.

Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton

Shades of Errol Flynn! Remember him in his dashing best swinging across the deck of a giant wooden ship, cutlass in hand, knife in teeth, women swoon-ing in the audience? Well, that’s what reading this book is like: a giant Tech-nicolor fi lm in your mind’s eye.

Author Crichton passed away last year, and apparently, this manuscript was found on his computer. Whether it was just written, or put aside years ago for whatever reason, we will never know. I, for one, am glad it was found and released...

The setting for this story is 1665 Port Royal, is-land of Jamaica: held by the British and home to an assortment of seafaring men and the merchants hoping to make their fortune on what the privateers bring in. You see, privateers were basically pirates with a legal loophole--they were allowed to attack ships from foreign countries as long as they had a “letter of marque.” Privateers were allowed this practice (supposedly) only during wartime with any given country, but in faraway colonies like Jamaica, heads were turned the other way as long as the cap-tain of the privateer ship gave a share to the Crown and to the governor of the local outpost. A pretty neat set-up.

Enter our hero (?) Captain Charles Hunter. He was born in the New World, the second son of Major Edward Hunter of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and educated at Harvard. Not your common mon-grel, indeed! But obviously a man looking for a more exciting life than keeping books for his father.

Mistress Anne Sharpe, lately of London, had just arrived in Port Royal on a ship with other women bound to be wives to men in the New World. She told Governor Almont how after a storm, the ship passed by an island with a fortress and a harbor with a Spanish warship in it. Almont couldn’t be-lieve that they weren’t followed and attacked.

Almont calls for Hunter and they ascertain the island must be Matanceros, just east of Puerto Rico and held by the Spanish. The ship Anne and the others saw had to have been a treasure galleon, not a warship, or it would have pursued the English.

This is too good to pass up and a deal is quickly fi xed between Almont and Hunter, he gets his letter of marque, and Hunter goes in search of a crew...

And what a bunch of characters! As Hunter goes around the taverns and back alleys collecting his best crew we meet -- Whisper (“no one knew his real name”) who lost his voice when a Spaniard cut his

throat and left him for dead. He knew the island of Matanceros and Hunter paid him for a map. then there was Don Diego de Ramano (“known also as Black Eye or simply the Jew”), near-sighted and missing fi ngers from previous for-ays who worked in powder and was a munitions expert. Mr. Enders was a barber-surgeon and sea artist; his tal-ent as a surgeon was necessary on board a ship. Then there was Lazue, the Frenchman (“the name was a bastard-ization of Les Yeux, for this sailor’s eyes were large, and bright, and legendary.”). Lazue could see in the dark better than anyone and was an expert marksman...

oh, and did I mention? this sailor is a she.The Moor, also called Bassa, was a giant of a man

with no voice, for his tongue has been cut out by a Spanish plantation owner.

Sanson was the last to be chosen. Hunter didn’t trust the man, but he was a ruthless killer, probably because he came from a family of French execution-ers.

Now with his inner circle chosen and ready to go, Hunter gathered together the rest of the necessary crew and Hunter’s ship, the Cassandra, set sail...

There’s one more important person yet to men-tion: Cazalla, the Spanish commander of the gar-rison at Matanceros. He’s not about to give up the prize ship El Trinidad that easily, so Hunter and company must fi nd a way to enter the harbor secret-ly--not directly, but quietly in a sneak attack over the mountain behind the garrison...but a few things happen that Hunter didn’t count on.

If you want excitement, adventure, the splash of sea water in your face and the warm winds of the Caribbean at your back, this is the story for you. Pi-rates, cannibals, sharks, a hurricane, and even the legendary kraken march across the pages taking your breath away with the non-stop action.

If Errol Flynn were still alive, he’d love it! I did...Michael Crichton is one of the most popular writ-

ers in the world with over 150 million books sold and translated into thirty-six languages. That’s pretty impressive. But when you add that thirteen of his books have been made into movies -- well, that’s just mind boggling. And, I almost forgot, he’s also the creator of the wildly popular TV series, “ER.” One more exciting fact: he is the only author who has had the number one book, movie and TV show at the same time!

Two more weeks to Christmas--happy reading and happy shopping!
