Planning is in full swing for our church’s 2015 UNITED FALL FEST – September 12, 2015 from 3pm to 10pm This year will mark our 5th Annual event, which unites our church with the local subdivision (Fox Mill) and our local village (Campton Hills) in a family-friendly festival that promotes fellowship within our congregation and our community.  The United Fall Fest directly benefits our Mission budget and is run entirely by our church volunteers.  It is quite a sight to see so many members of this church come together to bring the Fest to life. The day starts with the Fox Mill 5k in the morning.  Then the Festival kicks off at 3pm with music from “Disbard” to be followed that evening with music from “Red Woody,” both local favorites.  Returning highlights from past years include – Kid’s Corner; Bags Tournament; Classic Car Show; Medevac Helicopter Arrival; The Best Food & Beer Tent in the area and more. We want to ask 3 things from every church member:Mark your calendars now and join us for the day.

Pop Tabs for Ronald McDonald House

Men’s Fellowship Walking Group 3rd Saturday of each month, 8am

Contact George Mohn for information and location. 847-488-9179 [email protected]

Keep on saving the pop tabs! Thanks so much for saving pop tabs for the St. Charles Golden K Kiwanis Club’s project. The pop tabs are taken to Delnor Hospi-tal.  They, in turn, give them to Ronald McDonald House Chari-ties. The Ronald McDonald House provides a home for families of seriously ill children who receive treatment at nearby hospitals.  There are several in the Chicago area but the one most recently completed is in Winfield, near Central DuPage Hospital.  Amazing how all those little pop tabs together can raise enough cash to help build and maintain needed housing.  You can bring pop tabs to the church at anytime – if you have just a few, put them in the little green bag in the hutch outside the office.  Or if you have a bunch, put them in my mailbox in the office.  They are always welcome, and this is a never-ending project, reaching to infinity and beyond...thank you!  -Pat Kitner

Save the Date!As you know, John Rodgers will be retiring later in the year. Please mark these two upcoming dates on your calendar for our congre-gation to honor John:Sunday, October 11, will be John Rodgers’ Sunday with an all-church brunch following the service.Sunday, November 8, there will be an evening dinner and celebra-tion of his career at EagleBrook Country Club.

More details on both events will be made available in the coming months.

Our Pastoral Search Committee has been coordinating busy summer calendars as we move closer to our goal of recommending a candidate to our congregation to be “Called” as the next Senior Pastor for our church.  Though we still have personal interviews to complete with our finalists, we hope to realize our decision by early September.  It is difficult not to be more specific, but we also know nothing can or should be shared until mutual agreement is reached.  The deliberation we will experience will be the result of our faith in God and the considerable responsibilities we have to ALL of you.  Please, keep us in your personal prayers.

Respectfully,

Bob GrahamChair, Pastoral Search Committee

Suzy’s Storytelling SundayThere are many websites, subscription services and resources for ministers to find stories or sermon illustra-tions for ministers to turn to when writing sermons, look-ing for the right story that connects the bible verse or idea to real life. Over the years I have heard many snippets or stories from your lives about faith experiences. You are a fantastic resource for me. On August 23rd I would like to showcase your stories in the sermon time. You can send me an email or drop off your story in the office and let me know if you want your name included or not. I will do my best to share those illustrations but I might have to save some for a future preaching date!

At the May gathering of Novel Approaches the group chose the books for 2015 and 2016. Titles, Dates and Locations are listed below. Please sign up on the Congregational Life bulletin board. Hope you will join us!

September 18 – “All the Light We Cannot See” Anthony DoerrFrom the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning An-thony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, a National Book Award finalist, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times). We are invited to Denise Djoka’s home at 41W845 Bow-gren Drive, Elburn.

November 13 – “All Our Names” Dinaw MengestuA sweeping, continent-spanning story about the love between men and women, between friends, and between citizens and their countries, All Our Names is a transfix-ing exploration of the relationships that define us. Fleeing war-torn Uganda for the American Midwest, Isaac begins a passionate affair with the social worker assigned to him. But the couple’s bond is inescapably darkened by the secrets of Isaac’s past: the country and the conflict he left behind and the beloved friend who changed the course of his life—and sacrificed everything to ensure his freedom. From acclaimed author Dinaw Mengestu, here is a love story for our time. You are invited to Susan & John Rodgers’ home at 2018 Bridle Court, St. Charles.

January 22 – “Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit” Jeanette WintersonWinner of the Whitbread Prize for best first fiction, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is a coming-out novel from Winterson, the acclaimed author of The Passion and

2015-2016Novel Approaches

Sexing the Cherry. The narrator, Jeanette, cuts her teeth on the knowledge that she is one of God’s elect, but as this budding evangelical comes of age, and comes to terms with her preference for her own sex, the peculiar balance of her God-fearing household crumbles. Our discussion will be held at the home of Rich & Nancy Doerr. They live at 4206 Prestwick Court, St. Charles.

March 18 – “How Green Was My Valley” Richard LlewellynWinner of the National Book Award in 1940 and the basis for the Academy Award Best Picture film of the same name, How Green Was My Valley is full of memorable characters, richly crafted language, and surprising humor. Huw Morgan remembers the days when his home valley was prosperous, verdant, and beautiful—before the mines came to town. The youngest son of a respectable mining family in South Wales, he is now the only one left in the valley, and his reminiscences tell the story of a family and a town both defined and ruined by the mines. Huw’s story is both joyful and heartrending—a portrait of a place and a people existing now only in memory. The Ball’s have invited us to their home this evening, 43W213 Whirlaway Court, Elburn.

May 13 or 20 – “The Blind Assassin” Margaret AtwoodThe Blind Assassin opens with these simple, resonant words: “Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge.” They are spoken by Iris, whose terse ac-count of her sister’s death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental. But just as the reader expects to settle into Laura’s story, Atwood intro-duces a novel-within-a-novel. Entitled The Blind Assassin, it is a science fiction story told by two unnamed lovers who meet in dingy backstreet rooms. When we return to Iris, it is through a 1947 newspaper article announcing the dis-covery of a sailboat carrying the dead body of her husband, a distinguished industrialist. Brilliantly weaving together such seemingly disparate elements, Atwood creates a world of astonishing vision and unforgettable impact. Our last gathering for the year will be at Ken & Debby Graham’s home, 509 15th Court, St. Charles.

To All Women of the Church,  Happy summer! Hope you are enjoying our beautiful, warm weather.  On Wednesday, September 2, Women’s Fellowship will be having our first meeting of the new year.  We will gather in the Parlor around 9:00 to meet friends, old and new, and enjoy some coffee and refreshments. Our meeting will begin at 9:30.  We will have many things to discuss, mainly our annual Rummage Sale, which will be held October 12 thru 17.

WALK THIS WAYYou don’t have to be a marathon runner or even slightly ath-letic to reap the rewards of exercise. We were made to walk and walking is one of the most effective ways to keep your heart strong. I feel like I could end this article now. What else do you need to know? OK, here’s a little more information in case you’re not lacing up your walking shoes quite yet.

Studies that track people’s behavior for years see healthier brains in more-active people. Older people who walk a mile to two miles a day tend to have about a 35% lower rate of devel-oping Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Can I end this article NOW? Really, if a medicine was on the market that claimed to lower the risk of developing dementia by 35%, we would all be asking our doctors for a prescription!

Americans typically spend two-thirds of their day sitting and it can have a really negative effect on our health. Replacing just one hour of sitting each day with walking can significantly improve your health.

Mobility is really key as we age. When you lose your mobil-ity, you lose your independence. Walking can reduce the pain of arthritic knees by about 30%. If you combine walking with weight loss, the reduction in pain can be up to 50%.

Walking for exercise can help people who have been diagnosed with mild or moderate depression. Exercise appears to work in a way similar to antidepressant medications by increasing levels of serotonin, a chemical messenger that helps keep mood bal-anced. Exercise also helps people feel that they have regained some control over their lives. Individuals who have depres-sion and who exercise report feeling greater self-efficacy and empowerment.

If you still need another reason, how about this one? People who are more physically active, including those who walk for exercise, appear to be less likely to develop cancer. Regular physical activity also reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, sudden cardiac death, atrial fibrillation, and congestive heart failure. Don’t worry if you can’t do too much at one time. It’s the total amount that matters. If you have time for a 30 minute walk at lunch and another at the end of the day, you’ll essen-tially get the same benefit as taking an hour-long walk.

Before you lace up, make sure your boots shoes are made for walking. They should be lightweight, breath-able and provide support. Test the shoe’s flexibility by trying to bend it with your hands. A bendable shoe allows your foot to easily roll forward and push off with the toes. Try on walking shoes with the socks you plan to wear with them.

If you haven’t exercised in a while, don’t let that stop you. Take it slow and make sure the speed and length of your walk match your fitness level. Set clear and realistic goals and write them down. Keep a personal walking log. Simply writing down how long you walked and at what pace (slow, moderate, brisk) can help you track your progress and reach your goals. Keep it simple and develop a walking plan that works for you.

There is a walking group that meets at church every Thursday morning at 8:00am. They walk on the path in the Fox Mill Subdivision for about 30 minutes. If the weather is bad, they walk inside the church. Everyone walks at his/her own pace so there is no need to feel intimidated if you are just getting started. To be included in the walker group email, send an email to Carol Ludemann at [email protected]

So, the only thing left to say is (as I channel my inner Nancy Sinatra) “Start Walking”! I found this little gem I thought I’d share with you. Enjoy!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbyAZQ45uww

Who’s in the Pews?Donna and Ken Burg

By Sue PetersonYou may know a little about Donna and Ken Burg - Donna, the Yoga teacher; Ken, the almost anything, fix it person. I enjoyed learning so much more about their lives. Read on to see why. They joined our church in 1998 when we had just moved to the Campton Hills area. When searching for a church home, Donna was working for the St. Charles School District so she knew Wyonne Hegland, Bob Graham, Ken Graham, Dee Stribling James and others in the school district who were members of our church.  Donna and Ken were also married in 1986 by Rev. Bill Nagy in our down-town church building, but then moved away to Bartlett. So when they later settled in Geneva, and were looking for a church in 1998, they came to visit. They knew their search was over. It felt like home. Donna lived and grew up in Barrington, Illinois. Donna went to Illinois State for an undergraduate in psychol-ogy and graduate degree in school psychology. She worked as a School Psychologist for 25 years (St. Charles, Burlington, and West Chicago) with her favorite experi-ences in Early Childhood settings. When the West Chi-cago school district laid off a great deal of their staff during the recession, Donna found herself needing a new job. She was already teaching yoga and wondered if she could make it her full time work. Donna had indeed found her passion - being a gentle Yoga Instructor and Yoga Therapist.  Her yoga journey began 20 years earlier when she began taking yoga at the Geneva Park District, which led her to get her certificate from the Himalayan Institute in Glenview in 1998. Donna shared that she began yoga for her bad back, but fell in love with yoga for her body, mind and spirit!  She now works at Tranquility Spa and Wellness center (next to Townhouse Books) where Ken built her a beautiful stu-dio, and also teaches at our church, the Holmstad, Geneva Methodist Church, Bowes Creek clubhouse (where they live) and the Geneva Park District. She also loves to pro-vide a gentle experience to small groups or one-on-one, if desired. Ken was born in Upper Michigan but his family migrated to the north side of Chicago and then to the south side to Riverdale. Yes, he is a Cubs and Sox fan. He has a degree from Illinois State in Industrial Technology which included studies in computer programming, electronics, metals, woods and automotive. His first real job however was

manager at Zales Jewelers in Bloomingdale, but when his mother and grandmother were killed in a car accident, he quit that job and went to take care of his stepfather. He then left retail and worked for a fastener manufactur-er. He worked his way up to Director of Purchasing and Materials Controller.  He then went on to work in West Chicago for a British air compressor company until they wanted to move his family to Quincy, Illinois. Donna and Ken did not want to move their family there, so he quit and now Ken was also without a job. In searching, Ken too found his real passion and a way to help others. He decided to have his own business, Ken’s Quality Home Repair, and has been in home repair and remodeling ever since 2002.  When trying to decide if this small busi-ness was really for him, Pastor Rodgers said “This is your gift!  What do you need…a burning bush?” Donna and Ken met at a bar/dancing club when both were following the music group, Kool Ray and the Pola-roids. It must have been some mighty good music!! As I mentioned, they married in 1986, but finding a place to marry was a challenge. They grew up Catholic but could not find a Catholic Church who would marry them since they had not been attending. After talking to several people and hearing about the Congregational Church and Rev. Bill Nagy, they knew it was the place for their wedding. As it turned out, it became their church family and church home! Donna and Ken have two children. Kyle was born in 1989 and Chris in 1991. When their family joined our church, the boys both became active in Sunday school and later in GF. Chris is now one of the adult leaders for our GF high school youth group. He works for Simple Logistics in the sales area selling freight space on refrigerated trucks. Kyle works for Hyundai in Aurora selling cars, but he also has his dad’s talent for fixing things. When introducing his girlfriend to his parents one time he said, “My Dad fixes ‘things’. My Mom fixes ‘bodies and souls’.” Ken has been on the Mission Committee, and this fall you will see him at the Fall Fest again as the physical logistics (especially electrical) person. It is quite a setup to get ready for the fest. Please plan to come on September 12(and 11th to help set up). Donna has taught Sunday school and attends the afternoon Bible study. Also as I mentioned, Donna has 2 yoga gentle classes at our church. You are welcome to attend, as it is for all abilities and ages. Come and see what it’s all about!  They both also attend a couple’s Bible Study at the First Baptist Church of Geneva. There are plenty of stories and interesting events sur-rounding their lives. When you get a chance, talk with them to find out more.
