“I believe anyone can

learn from any other

person as long as you

are looking at the positive side of

their character. You see, it is eas-

ier to find the negatives in any

situation or person, but the key is

to keep looking for something

good, grasp the same and incul-

cate it in your own personal life

and character. Anyone can in-

spire you to succeed; be it

some celebrity, a great

scholar or even someone

from your family or your

group of friends. For me, it

was my chemistry teacher

who inspired and motivated

me to keep moving forward,

no matter how tough I found

the situation. His relaxed

and calm attitude towards

exams and his mantra of

not worrying about the

end result worked

magic on the students.

He would often ask us,

“What’s the worst that

could happen?” That is

one lesson I took to heart and it

got stuck in my head. It eventu-

ally motivated me to study hard

and keep going without worrying

about anything else. Of course,

there is no substitute to hard

work and will never be. So, my

sole focus was to do things to the

best of my capability and capac-

ities and perform well.

Eventually it only

worked because I

worked really hard

to make my dream

a reality. I am very

proud of what I

have been able to

achieve.”

“Studying in IIT Bom-

bay or IIT Delhi has

always been my

dream. In fact, I have wanted this

more than anything else. Even

though, I am not totally satisfied

with my rank, but I am certain

that it will fetch me a place in my

dream institution. The journey to

this point hasn’t been easy.

I faced a lot of setbacks, which

are inevitable if you are aspiring

for something great. But, every

time I faced a problem I didn’t sit

back and feel bad about it. What

kept me going through these

times is a piece of advice that I’d

once received. Whenever you are

in the middle of a problem and it

feels like the problem will win,

stop thinking about the problem

for a moment, take a breath or

maybe drink some water, then

look for a solution. And so I kept

going. Of course, this was only

possible because of the constant

support of my parents. I never

stopped believing in myself be-

cause they never did.”

All good things in life stem

from a common source –

a hope, a belief that they

will happen. And if AIR 3 in JEE

Advanced is not a good thing,

then we don’t know what is.

Basking in this glory is Archit

Bubna, a student of AIS Pushp

Vihar. He believed and here’s

what he thinks you should be-

lieve in, if you want to repeat the

feat, that is!

Believe in your dream Scoring a high rank in JEE exam

has always been my biggest dream.

I always believed in my dream, even

if it seemed tough at times. Remem-

ber three words: passion, aptitude and

determination. If a person has these

three qualities, there is no exam in the

world that you cannot crack; no dream

you can’t achieve.

Believe in your capabilities I always believed in the fact that I had

the capability to fulfill my dream. Sure, the belief

was guided by practical ground work: I analysed

all my strengths and weaknesses, and made a

study schedule which was flexible according to

my requirements.

Believe in your passion

If you are passionate about something, believe in

it and chase it till the very end. I was always pas-

sionate about studying science from a very young

age. It was a subject which fascinated me deeply,

and I always had a deep interest and curiosity in

gaining deeper knowledge of the field, and ulti-

mately making a career in it.

Believe in your family

My parents always had full faith in me and my

abilities. They were standing with me through

every step of this rollercoaster journey; they have

seen every high and low with me over the years.

It is their belief and their unwavering love for me

that I am standing where I am today. Believe me,

when I say this: Your family will always be your

biggest cheerleader.”

Believe in your alma mater My school has been a great support. Principal

ma’am, my teachers and my peers have always

provided a lot of support and guidance to me that

has motivated me to move forward. The teachers

were always there for me, round the clock.

Believe in your interests

“For all the students who wish to appear for

competitive exams, I suggest that you start as

early as possible, maybe even start young. I de-

veloped an interest in Science and competitive

exams when I started giving SOF Olympiads

when I was in Class II and Class III. Knowing

my interests this early in life helped me plan out

my process, so I utilised my time towards mak-

ing my dream a reality. G T

Once You Begin To Believe In Yourself, Success Follows

Ananya Grover, AIS Noida, XII B

SAT scores. Letter of recommen-

dations. Essays…foreign admis-

sion struggles. But a struggle

that ends sweet once you land your

choice of university ashore, and diabet-

ically sweet if the landing comes free

of cost aka scholarship. Well, then let’s

just say Arnav Misra, a student of AIS

Noida, has too much of a sweet tooth.

Arnav is one of the select 20 people

from across the world to have received

the Boston University Trustees Schol-

arship. The scholarship, worth 2 Crore

INR will cover the full cost of under-

graduate tuition and more. In a candid

interview, Arnav shares the sweet story

of his dream come true.

The dream takes root Ever since I was in Class XI, I wanted

to pursue higher education abroad. In

fact, both my brother and I had the

same dream of studying in a prestigious

institution overseas. But unfortunately,

my brother could not achieve the same

due to certain circumstances. It was

then that I decided that I needed to do

what he could not. That’s when I firmly

began working towards my aim.

Pursuing the dream As Class XI progressed, I began focus-

ing on one subject: Economics. I was

drawn towards the subject, because of

the immense scope it offers in the con-

temporary scenario and the financial

stability that comes with it. I researched

and wrote four papers on different eco-

nomic topics. I completed two intern-

ships, both of which were relevant to

Economics. Moreover, I participated in

the NASA ISSDC competition, han-

dling the ‘Costs and Scheduling’ de-

partment where I would analyse the

economic efficiency of the space set-

tlement plans made by my teammates.

Not only did I learn a lot in the process,

but I was also able to demonstrate my

intellectual rigour beyond the class-

room. As a result, my application re-

flected my passion, and that truly

worked in my favour.

Giving wings to dreams I cannot thank Chairperson ma’am

enough, as it is because of her that we

have been provided with such opportu-

nities at school, like NASA Space Set-

tlement Design Competition. My

teachers understood that I had a lot on

my plate, and went out of their way to

help me keep up my academic per-

formance. With the support of my par-

ents, teachers and principal, I was able

to balance my studies and

extracurricular activities, and become a

well-rounded individual.

On achieving the dream I wasn’t expecting to receive the schol-

arship because it’s so selective. Only

twenty people across the globe are

awarded this honour. I would never

have thought I’d be one of them.

Continuing the dream Boston University is in New England

and has a great Economics department.

It’ll give me exposure to quality educa-

tion, research opportunities and intern-

ships. I’ll also be able to cross-register

and attend classes at nearby institutions

such as Harvard and MIT.

Dream on My advice to junior Amitians would be

to not be too stressed. You don’t have

to be a genius to achieve your ambi-

tions and your dreams; you just need to

have the will to work hard towards it

and the passion to get ahead in

the field. Everything works out

in the end! G T

5Youth Power 2018-19 Panel Discussion

Youth Power is an annual social leadership programme organised by The Global Times.

It witnesses ten teams from Amity schools engage in varied social causes in several stages. One of them is‘Panel Discussion’ where experts from varied walks of life discuss several aspects of the chosen social cause. Here’s presenting Part 1 of this exclusive eight-part series, based on the panel discussions organised by YP teams, and a host of opinions as experts debate on ‘Food Wastage’, cause chosen by YP team of

The bite of the bite Hunger Bites, And So Does The Food Wastage. Bytes From The Experts…

“Food wastage is

definitely not a

problem stemming

from illiteracy or poverty. The

main reason is indifference. We

are simply indifferent to wasting

food. For example, when we are

buying food, barely do we

acknowledge the fact that we are

perhaps buying in surplus and we

may not be able to consume all that we are

buying. Yet, we tend to overstock products,

which is primarily a result of choosing

from an abundance of aesthetically

pleasing products, lined on the

shelves of supermarkets.

The focus should

primarily be on

what we need and not

what we want.”

It is indifference and not ignorance

“Being a

restaurant

owner, I

witness food wastage daily.

People order in excess and

then tend to waste it as they

are unable to finish it. To

avoid it, we request our

customers to take their

leftovers. If they don't wish

to consume it, we request

them to give it to someone

in need. I think the food

mitigation initiative by the

YP team of AIS Gurugram

43 is truly a wonderful one.

If this is how responsible

they are at a young age, then

India is headed towards a

productive revolution.”

“As a nutritionist, I feel

that the root cause for

food wastage is

‘variety’. When we are served with

an array of anything, we tend to

grab more, even if we do not want

it. And exactly the same thing

happens with food. When we are

provided with a variety of food

items, we end up wasting more.

Thus, it is crucial that we stick to

serving not more than 2-3 dishes

at a time. This is even more

relevant for weddings where a

large amount of food is wasted, simply

because of the humongous variety that is

served on such occasions.”

Less is never a mess

“Our NGO

adheres to

a strict no

waste policy. If you give

a couple of oranges to a

man who barely gets to

eat anything, he will be happy and grateful.

However, a privileged person will never be

satisfied and would always want more in greed.

So, instead of organising parties for your

family and friends, we should focus more on

the ones who are in need. We can organise a

food donation drive for those who are actually

in need. If that seems difficult, we can atleast

not waste food. Try and utilise the leftover food

to the maximum, or feed to the ones who need

it. I highly appreciate the effort of Youth Power

team, because it is very rare that young kids are

willing to step out of their comfort zones and

do something for the society. I am sure that

these students are getting the right kind of

exposure. It is not just a student who wins, but

the whole society.”

*Earth Saviours Foundation is an internationally acclaimed non-government organisation dedicated to work for the less-fortunate people and also for the betterment of the society. The foundation is also a proud recipient of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Prestigious Award for Excellence in Humanitarian Services.

Feed those who need it

“Food wastage can be elimi-

nated to a great extent if

we shop smart. Since we

have to prepare food in large quanti-

ties on a daily basis, I ensure that we

are buying the right quantity. I have

switched to weekly shopping rather than on a monthly basis.

I make sure that we don’t cook extra food than neccessary.

“Our organisa-

tion aims at

mitigating

food wastage that takes

places abundantly. We

act as mediators between

the fortunate and less

privileged. However, the

biggest hurdle for us is

ensuring the quality of

food being donated. If each one of

us tries to bridge this gap, hunger

will no longer be an issue. The key

is to create a balance between the

haves and the have-nots

to solve the purpose.”

*The Robin Hood Army is a non-funded organisa-tion run by volunteers. It collects good quality sur-

plus food from restaurants and so-cial gatherings with an aim to serve the underprivileged sections of the society.

Prerna Diwas Celebrating A Mother’s Birthday With Endeavours To Save ‘Mother Earth’

We all are born with some dreams,

some aspirations and some

passions. And then there are some

of us, who are born with dreams, strive for our

aspirations, and live for our passions, and thus

gradually transform into ‘Prerna – An

Inspiration’. Dr (Mrs) Amita Chauhan,

Chairperson, Amity Group of Schools and

RBEF is one of them.

With her dream to nurture young minds

through education woven with values and a

passion to change the world, Chairperson

ma’am has become an inspiration for

countless Amitians. Ergo, her birthday is

celebrated across all Amity Group of Schools

as ‘Prerna Diwas’.

The celebrations this year across all Amity

schools were even more special, for they

marked the culmination of a week long ‘Earth

Day’ celebrations organised in the school. As

Amitians commemorated the birthday of their

beloved Chairperson, a mother figure to all,

they vowed to save mother Earth. The

celebrations saw students engage in a myriad

of activities- badge making, poster making,

bookmarks, essay writing, slogan writing,

dance performances, skits, tree plantation, etc;

each aimed at disseminating the message:

‘Save Earth’. A havan was also organised in

the respective schools, wherein students

prayed for the well-being of Chairperson.

Avyaan Talwar & Ridhaan Talwar, AIS Gur 46, III pose with their copy of The

Global Times in front of the Tower Bridge of London. Known for its bascule and

suspension bridge on River Thames, the tower got its name from Tower of London.

Initially, people disliked its Victorian Gothic design but over time the bridge

became one of London’s iconic emblems.

celebrating the myriad tastes it has offered to the world. Capture these sumptuous flavours

Nandini Sukhija, AIS MV, Alumnus

Every generation comes with its own set

values. The successive generation follows

suit, but of course, with a few tweaks here

and there. While some of these ammends are

made for the sake of sheer convenience, others are

aimed at overcoming embarrassments and rather

horrific moments. We have similar hopes of

change pinned on to our generation. Read on to

know why.

Guest = God

No, no, no, we don’t wish to get rid of the “please,

have some tea”. After all, we live in the land of

atithi devo bhav. What irks our bones is the whole

bag of shenanigans that comes with this ‘one cup

of tea’: “Beta, uncle ko dance karke dikhaiyo” or

“Beta, sing a song for auntie!” Don’t you think

the time has come to stop pestering children and

to stop pretending that the same uncles and aun-

ties wouldn’t be offended if these kids grow up

wanting to become an artist rather than a doctor or

even an engineer?

The snake dance

If there is one thing all Indian men are truly

skilled at (no, it’s not chivalry, you starry-eyed op-

timist!), it is the profound art of ‘Nagin Dance’

- a feature omnipresent in all Indian weddings.

More than the desire to abolish this ritual is the

curiosity to trace its origin. Who, after all, was the

bright genius who came up with the idea of for-

mally-dressed grown men acting like a wannabe

snake as a decent way of celebrating someone’s

big day?

To take or not to take

The culmination of every family gathering is des-

tined to be the same: elders offering us money, us

politely declining the offer even though we are

more than willing to accept it, and our mothers in

the background silently warning us not to dare

utter a ‘yes’. It always feels like an eternity of

being in a deadlock until we are forcefully handed

the notes. After all the quirks of a family function,

the young ones truly deserve a reward for all their

troubles, so stop making them go through such a

dilemma over and over again.

Although your names won’t be able to make it to

the fine pages of a history book, trust me, you will

earn everyone’s respect for your valuable contri-

bution to the discontinuation of these customs.

Nandini Sukhija is currently pursuing Bachelor of Arts degree from Mithibai College, Mumbai.

For the next generation Here’s Looking At You Starry Eyed Millennials To Drive Away What We Lived With
