What a wonderful privilege to end yet another year with hearts filled with gratitude because so many hopes that we had a year ago became a joyful reality. It was only possible with the immense dedication of staff, the unselfish caring of individuals, congregations and businesses who supported us financially, as well as the involvement of volunteers who helped to hold our hands high with their serve-with-love attitudes.
This annual report provides a summary of the way in which the NID family wholeheartedly lives the mission of the organization with hearts filled with a passion to make the vision a reality. Living the values of NID helps the organization to stay true to the rich history that was established over the last 137 years. This history entails a strong trust relationship between all the parties involved with the organization, including management, staff, donors, the government and co-workers, but especially the beneficiaries, the Deaf community and persons with a diversity of hearing loss.
NID succeeds to remain relevant in a world where change is at the order of the day. The board of directors and management embrace positive change through the ongoing challenge of existing structures in the quest for constant improvement. It is our passion to move forward and to research and apply innovative initiatives with energetic diligence to the benefit of the organization and its beneficiaries.Above all it is our testimony that God is blessing this organization. We stand together to live out His plan for NID.

At NID Care the lives of adult Deaf persons with multiple disabilities are developed by means of Bio-Psycho-Social and Spiritual Care and Development programmes. These programmes take place in Residential Care facilities and protective workshops. Here residents are stimulated and empowered to reach their full potential. This is made possible with the help and support of dedicated, expert staff who provide services of the highest standard in a caring, loving atmosphere.
From the hearts of the staff ...
I often hear the following remarks from staff:• “It is a privilege for me to work here”;• “I like to be here”;• “I love the people here”;• “I want to use my gifts and talents”, and• “I want to serve these people for the Kingdom
of God”.
It is a pleasure for staff when:• They see and hear the spontaneous greetings
of the residents!• They see the beautiful and well-kept rooms
of the residents.• They see how hard the residents work in the
workshops and how carefully and proudly they manufacture their products.
• They hear from the numerous visitors how wonderful the work is that is being done here.
• They see how clean and tidy the grounds are.• They hear how co-workers laugh and also see
and experience the loving interaction with the residents.
Support is more than just things that can be seen – it is also the constructive words and actions that enrich a person, for example when parents express their gratitude with regard to the services NID provides to their multiple disabled child. It is also when residents testify that NID provides a caring home for them as well as experiencing the mutual affection of residents and staff when they give and receive spontaneous hugs. At NID Care we not only sow seeds in people’s lives, but also invest in the development of a diverse group of people. Here a little seed becomes a flower when basic skills begin to develop.Here, we live the words respect, patience, hope, care, gratitude, joy and love.

Mr Kobus van den Bergh, Head of NID Care, bade farewell to NID on his retirement on 31 March 2018. His heartfelt farewell words will live on at NID Care for a long time to come: “It is difficult to say goodbye where it is a true joy to work, where it is an immeasurable pleasure to be part of a group of people who make a difference by filling each and everyone’s life with a truly caring love.” - Kobus van den Bergh

ELDERLY DEAF
2009...
Many visitors to Shalom have testified about the calmness and peace that prevails here. Some of the stories and events are so precious that it warms the hearts of the staff:
“We experience the love in so many different ways and we are so grateful for it. Shalom and Kiewiet are beautiful homes, the area is peaceful and our residents feel safe and secure. It is a place to belong.“
Shortly after she moved in, one lady wrote a letter to Die Burger describing Shalom as “her own piece of heaven.”
An older male resident who was losing his sight, insisted on starting the sprinklers even though he had to go down on his knees to find and turn on the taps.
A compassionate lady patiently taught one of the residents how to use her cell phone.
One of the male residents bought a box of chocolates (even though he had only a little pension money) to show his grati-tude to someone. An elderly lady who was transferred from Cape Town to Shalom was very sad but the loving care she received here changed her into a cheerful person.
It is however, the Carers who look after the residents with love, compassion and a lot of patience. Especially towards the end of their lives.
Carers shared: “Our residents are like family to me – my own mother asks me every night how this or that person is ...”
The Carers are special people who do their work with love and care.
Love is a universal language that does not need words...
From the heart of Shalom

Team building activities keep the ISS team motivated to do innovative planning through interactive team work. These activities are aimed at helping the team to learn about each other’s strong points, weak points and interests. In such an informal and competitive way, productivity is increased, and outcome is improved.
NID supports the Deaf through a holistic approach. The focus is placed on development of potential rather than on what is not possible. Included in this approach is the provision of speech therapy using supportive assistive devices such as speech visualisers. With the help of a joint partnership project, speech therapy students in their final year at Stellenbosch University’s Ukwanda campus are utilised to facilitate the process, during which they assist persons with hearing loss to maximize their potential.
“Laat die voetspore wat ons in mense se lewens laat, ‘n storie van liefde,
hoop en bemagtiging vertel”
- Ilse Bloem
Students are facilitated to develop life skills through the “Life at the Cross Roads” programme. It focuses on the holistic whole person and emphasizes the balance between growth and sustained life skills in the five personal dimensions namely Physical, Social, Mental, Emotional and Spiritual. It provides
practical solutions to everyday challenges experienced by youth and equips them to become pro-active and independent therefore increasing their opportunities to take ownership in decision making processes.

South African Sign Language (SASL) has, for the first time, been officially recognised as a home language in the curriculum of the National Senior Certificate. In celebration of this life changing occasion a NID YouTube channel with free SASL content was established. The videos that are loaded on the channel are actual do-it-yourself (DIY) topics. The aim is to motivate prospective SASL students to learn SASL as a new language.
The visual material can also be used in schools where there are Deaf learners as a free resource for classroom activities. It can also be used by hearing parents of Deaf children to help them learn SASL.

NID participated in the fly over competition that was presented as part of the ABSA Cape Epic Mountain Bike Race in the Breede Valley on 21 & 22 March 2018. The design for this exciting competition was created by Deaf multimedia designers. It is based on how they would like the world to view the Deaf and persons with hearing loss. The decision on the final design was unanimous. They wanted to send out a definite message that would portray them as “Deaf and able”.
This competition created a platform from which to send this message in order to sensitise the broader community and make them aware of the fact that Deaf people are able. The participants, who depicted the design, represented the broad spectrum of the community, including the Deaf, persons with hearing loss, those with cochlear implants as well as hearing people.

The central business district is frequently visited by the community of Worcester which also includes Deaf people. Hearing people are used to the cashier asking what account option they would prefer in regard to the card they are using. It is also common to ask where the bakery in the supermarket is. This type of general communication is not possible for Deaf persons. This project has enabled the Deaf to make it easier to do their shopping.
NID provides integrated support services to Deaf beneficiaries on the NID campus as well as to the broader Deaf community through a systematic, holistic approach. The focus is on the removal of barriers with regard to access and participation and the provision of support for sustainable integration into community life. Services include the provision of South African Sign Language (SASL) training, the production of posters and much more.

NID Training currently offers training in a variety of programmes to over 900 students throughout the country. Our Deaf students experience all aspects of student life, from sport and culture activities, to recreation and accommodation – all in line with the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) strategic policy framework. NID ensures that Deaf beneficiaries have equal access to available resources that will improve their future and give them a more positive outlook on life.
NID Training’s programmes are aimed at specific career paths with Deaf accessible employment possibilities. Programmes
are supported by our training business units that serve as platforms for students to gain self-confidence and to learn skills under the supervision of experienced business unit managers.
NID Training has a proven track record of Deaf-accessible training which is aimed at preparing Deaf beneficiaries for the open labour market. It enables students after graduation to become economically sustainable and to contribute to South Africa’s economy. In 2017, NID Training’s pass rate was 97%.
TRAINING

The Business Training Units have multiple purposes. They are utilised as development and training facilities for the Deaf, they offer good employment opportunities and can thus also generate income in order to present sustainable programmes at NID.
The Eight Business Training Units are:
What do the Business Training Units mean to the Deaf?
• Woodwork, Joinery and Upholstery: This combined business unit offers work environment exposure to Deaf students who are enrolled in the Upholstery and Joinery programmes;
• A Nursery working in conjunction with the Agriculture programme produces seedlings and plants, as well as other garden products to sell to the public;
• A Tea Garden serves as a realistic working environment where Professional Cookery students can gain practical experience in food preparation and serving skills;
• NID Laundry renders services to the departments on campus as well as to the public. The practical component of the Laundry Assistant programme is presented at the laundry on campus;
• The Building Block Manufacturing unit provides the Construction students with the opportunity to gain practical experience, including the production of economical building blocks which are made available to the public;
• The Beauty salon offers a variety of beauty treatments to the public by qualified and experienced Deaf therapists. Students who are registered on the National Certificate: Nail and Beauty Therapy, gain valuable practical experience here;
• Accommodation units where comfortable accommoda-tion is offered to the public and are linked to the practi-cal training for the National Certificate: Accommodation Services; and
• Care, Training & Production Workshops where adults with multiple disabilities participate in various therapeutic development programmes. These beneficiaries manufacture a variety of products for the open market according to their ability.

The Deaf Family Church is a spacious house where all Deaf and hearing people are welcome, regardless of background, culture or language. Our language may well be Sign Language, but NO, our LANGUAGE is love.
In 2017 we celebrated 30 years with a Veteran Motor Show and Ford rally, the unveiling of our new logo and name as well as a weekend festival in October.
This congregation is a place where everyone (the elderly from Shalom, toddlers, young people from De la Bat School, NID Training’s students, NID Care’s residents and working Deaf and families of the Deaf), can feel at home and belong. Love, relationships, being of service, acceptance and patience are very important to us. Our care for each other comes to life here!
De la Bat school is an outstanding school with a warm heart for its learners. The school has already provided 137 years of specialised Deaf-accessible teaching to Deaf learners as well as learners with hearing loss. The school stands out as an excellent academic institution due to the following qualities and characteristics:

On 8 October, Festival Sunday, we unveiled a story wall (photo wall), that tells the story of the congregation. It is a story of God’s care and mutual love that nothing can destroy, because we know who we belong to.
Together with Deaf Christian Ministry Africa (DCMA), courses are being developed to further empower church members and Deaf people to better their understanding of the Bible and to grow in faith. We realise that emotional maturity and spiritual maturity cannot be separated from one other.
DCMA in partnership with Huguenot College also offers further education to full-time Deaf students who are preparing themselves for ministry. We praise God for this merciful space where we as a church, can be.

NID realised a Net Loss of R8.6 million over the reporting period. Income from Grants have declined with nearly R16 million in this year. As a result of this, securing funds to meet the needs of our service departments was a challenge. NID have a strategy in place to diversify sources of income even more. The streamlining of the Elderly Care services from two units to one, had a positive outcome. Care services shortfall has declined with R630 000 in the implementation year.
Despite the loss of this year NID is optimistic about the future and strategies to keep on delivering services of excellence, by building partnerships which will benefit both parties, diversify income, grow NID’s sustainability fund and mitigating risks with the input, hard work and support of highly dedicated human recourses.

At NID’s Development Department we work with our hearts, because every friend we have and each new friend we make become precious heart-friends.
Our heart-friends do not only make our task of 137 years possible, but also help to make our services sustainable. In this way everyone makes a difference in the lives of the Deaf and people with hearing loss who make use of NID’s services. Every one of these special heart-friends, whether through personal contributions, church offerings, participation in NID projects, contributions from businesses and companies, or that last act of care when a bequest is received, touches the lives of NID’s beneficiaries. People who continue to give although they are no longer with us. People with big hearts. Caring hearts.
Our thanks and great appreciation to every heart-friend who during the past year, and also everyone over the years, opened their hands; touched lives; touched hearts. Thank you for every contribution that made our work possible. Every single contribution is the proverbial drop in the bucket that creates a stream, feeds a river and fills a dam. Thank you that in this way you do the work “with us”.
