Speed, precision and efficiency are important for all the processes that keep your airport running smoothly.

Among the most critical challenges you face is the closely-regulated function of screening checked baggage. The goal is to transport baggage from check-in, through effective security screening and then to the aircraft as quickly as possible with the least amount of manual handling and intervention—and to do it in the most cost-effective manner.

With the introduction of the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT, Smiths Detection now offers you superior scanner technologies and a thoroughly engineered approach to operational efficiency. The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT explosives detection system can optimize the overall performance and cost-effectiveness at your facility by delivering:

• Fast belt speed

• High throughput

• Large tunnel opening

• Advanced detection

• Low false alarm rate

• Best-in-class imagery

FAST BELT SPEED FOR HIGH THROUGHPUTWith a belt speed of 98.5 feet per minute, the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT is the fastest available automated explosives detection system (EDS).

The fast belt speed, combined with other features, enables the XCT to process up to 1800 bags per hour, which is a significantly higher throughput than any other compliant automated EDS from other manufacturers.

The XCT easily integrates into newly implemented hold baggage system configurations or as a replacement in current baggage handling systems.

What this means to you

Fewer EDS units for your overall checked baggage handling system.

Depending upon your current configuration, you may also need fewer conveyors and less additional hardware such as cost intensive queuing conveyors and diverters.

Since you’ll require fewer EDS units, you will save on the initial costs of the hardware. You will also save on both short- and long-term maintenance, not only because there are fewer machines, but also because of Smiths Detection’s reputation for high reliability and durability.

You can significantly reduce the space required for the explosives detection function. With a smaller footprint, you lower operating costs and make premium space available for other uses.

For customers currently using legacy EDS systems operating an XCT provides a cost-effective direct replacement, requiring little or no re-engineering.

Ultimately, the combination of high belt speed with large tunnel size, low false alarm rates and image quality can deliver a level of throughput that will streamline your baggage handling processes to new levels of performance and efficiency.

LARGE TUNNEL OPENING IMPROVES THROUGHPUTThe HI-SCAN 10080 XCT provides a tunnel opening that is 42.1 x 31.9in.

This tunnel opening accommodates bags that are 39.4 x 31.5 x 63in—the largest luggage size of any automated EDS.

What this means to you

Screen more checked bags through the automated Level 1.

There will be far fewer out-of-gauge bags that require manual handling and less potential for bag jams, which slow down processing.

Less manual handling means fewer staff members are needed to tend the baggage line and perform manual searches, so you can realize significant workforce savings. It also means you’ll have higher utilization of the advanced scanner techniques that offer very precise identification of threats.

You will also reduce the need of expensive alignment devices as used with systems from some other manufacturers.

The net result: faster processing, more effective detection, cost savings.

The 42.1 x 31.9in rectangular tunnel of the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT enables bags up to 39.4 x 31.5in to be screened at the automated Level 1. The large tunnel size reduces the number of out-of-gauge bags and minimizes the potential for bag jams.

ADVANCED DETECTION & LOW FALSE ALARM RATE

The heart of the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT system is Smiths Detection’s superior scanner system, which utilizes two technologies for material discrimination and density. The system includes:

• Dual-view, dual energy high resolution X-ray line scanner, which provides material discrimination

• Volumetric computed tomography (CT) scanner with 3D image reconstruction that provides material density

Based on data from these high-speed scanners, our proprietary automated detection algorithms very quickly distinguish between baggage with safe contents and baggage that contains a possible threat.

The high level of accuracy achieved by the dual technologies results in superior detection and in a minimal number of false alarms.

What this means to you

Because it provides both material discrimination and density, our sophisticated EDS can detect all current explosive threats specified by regulatory authorities. It also has the capacity to detect new threats that may become prominent in the future, such as homemade explosives. These broad capabilities help ensure the long life span of your equipment, thus protecting your investment.

The low false alarm rate results in fewer bags isolated for on-screen examination and manual inspection. The tangible benefits are savings on operational costs, including fewer on-screen resolution (OSR) stations, less space required for manual inspections and fewer staff members needed for both roles.

BEST-IN-CLASS IMAGERY

High image resolution is essential for OSR operators to work both quickly and accurately.

Our X-ray line scanner provides 2-dimensional (2D) images with the smallest pixel size for the highest resolution available, along with true color imagery for material discrimination. Extremely sharp, full color, high resolution images make it easier to clearly see even the most difficult-to-discern items such as wires and detonators.

Our volumetric computed tomography scanner features the smallest voxel size available in security CT scanners, for optimal image resolution. The 3-dimensional (3D) image can be manipulated and rotated to enable operators to more easily identify suspect objects.

What this means to you

With the highest resolution 2D and 3D imagery, OSR operators receive more information which enables them to perform faster and more complete evaluation of suspect items.

Rapid evaluation of potential threats minimizes the number of manual searches and re-checks that are required. The result is fewer operators needed for on-screen resolution, fewer workstations and reduced staff for manual bag searches.
