The Tie Dye workshop will be held from 9:30- 11:30 a.m. and the Cat and Dog Care workshop will be held from 1:00 p.m. -3:00 p.m. All supplies will be provided. Attend either or both workshops, but please contact the Ms. Abby or Mr. Shawn to reserve your spot as soon as possible. A headcount will be needed in order to provide supplies. Scholarship Time for Seniors Although going off to college is an exciting time in life, it can also be very expensive. 4-H is here to help with your financial needs through parish and state scholarship opportunities. All high school seniors in East Baton Rouge Parish must complete their 4-H Scholarship forms and turn them into the Parish Office by Friday, February 28, 2014. Scholarship forms can be found and downloaded at: http://www.lsuagcenter.com/en/4H/4h_foundation/ We encourage senior 4-H members to take advantage of the scholarships available. This is your opportunity to showcase your involvement and get awarded for it! All questions can be directed to Ms. Abby.

The Tie Dye workshop will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and the Cat and Dog Care workshop will be held from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. All supplies will be provided. Attend either or both workshops, but please contact the Ms. Abby or Mr. Shawn to reserve your spot as soon as possible. A headcount will be needed in order to provide supplies.

News from Horse Club Horse Club is up and moving in 2014! We would like to

remind our members and new members of the

upcoming meetings. This month will focus on

horsemanship and Team Sorting. We encourage you

to pack up the trailer and bring your horse for this very

informative meeting.

Junior Leadership Conference JLC – Where Dreams Come True will take place March 7-9, 2014 at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, LA. This is open to all 4-H’ers aged 14-18 who have a desire to bring their leadership skills to the next level, but there are a limited amount of spaces available so reserve your spots as soon as possible. Please contact Mr. Shawn to register.

Livestock Club The East Baton Rouge Livestock Club will meet again on Janu-ary 15 at 6:30PM at the Gas Utility Building in Zachary, LA. This month’s meeting will focus on showmanship and ethics. As we move forward with livestock show season, we’d like to remind all of our exhibitors and their families to take special care of those animals with the changing temperatures and time at the shows. Calling All Artists and Creatives — This Contest is for YOU! Each year 4-H hosts the Beef and Dairy Poster contests to promote each industry and educate people about the benefits of the beef and dairy industries. We are excited to provide this opportunity to you all again this year. This contests allows for you to showcase your creative talents and put together something really fun and different. For the past two years, East Baton Rouge has had winners go on to win on the State Level, and we know this year won’t be any different. Here’s the info:

All EBR Beef Poster entries are due to the Parish Office by February 28, 2014. All entries must be on an 11” x 14” piece of white poster board. Place your name, address, age, grade in school and parish on the upper right corner on the back of your poster. Posters should generate positive images of beef and beef products and not portray negative image of other food products (i.e. chicken, pork, etc). Copy written images are prohibited. Please be sure to contact Mr. Shawn for more information.

All EBR Dairy Poster entries are due to the Parish Office by February 28, 2014. All entries must be on a 22” x 28” piece of poster board. Place your name, address, age, grade in school and parish on the upper right corner on the back of your poster. Posters should generate positive images of the dairy industry and dairy products and not portray negative image of other food products (i.e. chicken, pork, beef, etc). Buzz on the Bees 4-H’ers, please don’t forget about this great opportunity! The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc. will once again host its annual Honey Bee Essay Contest open to all 4-H youth. This year’s essay will be:

This year’s essay will be: “Beekeeping in Colonial Times”

1. Contest is only open to active 4-H Members. 2. Essay must be 750-1,000 words in length written

on the designated topic with factual statements. 3. A biographical sketch must accompany each

essay. Sketch should include the essayist’s date of birth, age, gender, complete mailing address, and telephone number.

4. Essays will be judged on (1) research– 40% (2) accuracy– 30% (3) creativity– 10% (4) logical development–10%

5. National winners will be announce by May 1, 2013

ALL ESSAYS ARE DUE TO THE EBR 4-H OFFICE BY JAN. 31, 2014. No late entries will be accepted.

National Winners will be awarded: 1st Place -- $750.00, 2nd Place -- $500.00,

3rd Place -- $250.00

Summer Fun Coming Your Way

For those of you who are unfamiliar with 4-H U, it is a 3 day experience on LSU’s campus for any 4-H’ers between the ages of 13-18. Participants will choose one contest out of over 30 possibilities to train for during the spring and com-pete in at the event. 4-H’ers also have the opportunity to stay in the dorms with participants from all over Louisiana, tour campus facilities, and get their groove on at the dance each night! This year, 4-H U is scheduled for June 17-20, 2014. If you are interested in learning about more infor-mation please contact Ms. Abby.

What is a summer without going to camp? It is a truly mem-orable experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. East Baton Rouge Parish will be attending 2014 Summer Camp at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, Louisiana July 7-11, 2013. Camp is open to any 9-12 year old 4-H’ers in East Baton Rouge Parish. Camp cost this year is $225.00. This includes camp fees, a parish picture, a camp t-shirt, $20.00 to be spent at the Camp Store, and transportation and food costs. .
