Henry David Thoreau was born in 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts. He grew very close to his older brother John. He graduated from Harbor University in 1837. After he graduated he caught two illnesses. He was a very complex man and he had many talents. He always looked “for the truth of nature.”

Henry had a brother named John. He taught school with Henry so they could pay for the twitch Henry developed after his illnesses.

In 1842 a tragic thing happened. John cut himself while shaving. A day later John died of lock jaw. John was on the floor when Henry came. Henry picked up John and he died slowly in Henry’s arms.

After the accident Henry worked several more years at his father's pencil factory. In 1847 Henry published his first book about nature, and then went to Walden's pond.

Henry relates to our project because he studied nature and he probably saw and studied falcons. He must have known a lot about peregrine falcons. Sam Gribly, in Frightful's Mountain ~ the novel we read ~ is a lot like Henry because Sam loved nature too.
