Dear Parents/Caregivers

Welcome to the first newsletter for Term 2 and a warm welcome to the following children who have started

with us recently; Courtney Lillicrapp (Rm 12), Lucas Hepworth (Rm 15), Shaddix Harris (Rm 3), Ruby Ching (Rm 4),

Romano Smith (Rm 4), Dominic Quayle (Rm 17), Zachary Redpath (Rm 6), Ryan Singleton (Rm 2),

Isla Thomas (Rm 3), Annalise Torrance (Rm 3), Ryder Gestro (Rm 4) and Amelie Jensen (Rm 6).

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend and maybe managed to get along to an ANZAC Day service. Here at school we took part with the

placing of a number of crosses in memory of the fallen outside our Office. This was part of the Fields of Remembrance initiative and

thirty crosses were placed in the garden to honour the New Zealanders who fell during World War One. A service was held by the

Senior Syndicate that incorporated reading the famous Flanders Field poem, a moments silence and the singing of the National

Anthem.

Those of you that use the Gilbert Street entrance may have noticed that work has been done to improve the pedestrian crossing. A

request from the school to the Tasman District Council has now seen this upgraded to a Kea Crossing. The crossing will be fully

operational once the Police Education Officer has trained the Road Patrol students. This crossing has become significantly busier in the

last few years – please be patient while our Road Patrol students are familiarising themselves with the operation of the new crossing.

Thanks to the Tasman District Council (Krista Hobday, Zane Mirfin and Steve Elkington) and NZ Police Education Officer (Evan Garland)

for supporting this development that will enhance the safety of our students.

Included in this week’s newsletter is a calendar of events that we produce at the beginning of each term. Although we try and plot

most of the events that occur over the term there are bound to be additions through opportunities that arise – we will endeavour to

keep you informed of these via the newsletter. This is another full and busy term with written student reports and parent interviews

as well.

Finally, don’t forget Mother’s Day is coming

up on May 10th. At school we see mums

involved in helping on trips and in

classrooms, looking after sick children,

providing healthy lunches, encouraging

their children and helping with homework

as well as giving their children love and

attention.

Entertainment book info??

Fractions

Use the language of fractions – halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths etc in everyday situations so it is meaningful.

Emphasise a fraction is part of a ‘whole’ – less than 1.

Cut string, paper, and food into fractions.

Colour shapes in fractions.

Share out sets of objects into fractions. Eg We have 24 blueberries for our lunch today. If Jack was allowed ¼ of them, how many will he

get?

¼ of 24 = ? Divide 24 into quarters (6 + 6 + 6 + 6)

So ¼ would equal 6.

Depending on where your child is at, use equal sharing, repeating addition or multiplication and division

strategies to solve the problem.

Maths Magic Fundraiser

This term, Friends of the School and the Maths Team have organised a Maths fundraiser which will raise money for the refit of our newly built Learning Centre as well as improve student’s basic facts knowledge. Information will come home in Week 3 (4th May). This is one of our big fundraisers for the year so we appreciate your support.

I feel the blood pumping into my wings as I hang upside

down awkwardly.

I wonder which garden I will end up in…. I hope it will be

magnificent.

I think it will feel amazing hovering along with the wind

power.

The stimulus for this writing was the emergence of monarch

butterflies from their chrysalises. The children were asked to write as

though they were the butterfly.

Memo from the Board of Trustees

For the safety and well-being of the students at

our school the Board of Trustees strongly

discourages dogs being brought into the school

grounds. Please bear in mind that many children

are frightened and intimidated by dogs. The

Board strives to make the school a safe and

supportive place for all students.

The board continues to meet regularly to

monitor the progress of the school and plan

strategically for the future. At the last meeting

we had an interesting presentation from Jeff

Johnstone from the AsiaNZ foundation on the

importance of equipping our children to thrive in

the approaching ‘Asian century’

We wish all students and staff all best for a

successful term.
