Dear Madam/Sir,

We are pleased to present you the Hengstenhouderij Landzicht brochure. Hengstenhouderij Landzicht specializes in both the breeding and showing of KWPN Dutch Harness Horses. We also buy and sell a variety of quality horses.

BreedingHengstenhouderij Landzicht invested in the future with its acquisition of the stallions Unieko and Plain’s Liberator, the Hackney that received the keur predicate at the end of 2008. We are proud of their offspring, and several have won championships. Furthermore, our stallion Stuurboord proved his worth last year by becoming the Dutch national stallion champion in harness. In 2008, our collection of breeding stallions grew to five with the approval of our promising youngsters Aquarel and Zepplin. This brochure contains extensive information about our stallions. In

addition, general information about the KWPN (the Royal Dutch Sporthorse) and the KWPN Dutch Harness Horse appears on pages 14 and 15.

ShowingHengstenhouderij Landzicht also specializes in showing, and we have been very successful over the years. In 2008, Stuurboord won the Dutch National Stallion Championship as well as the 2008 Young Riders Championship with Mark de Groot. Our other top horses include Tasman Landzicht (2004 competition winner), Toronto Landzicht (2006 Young Riders Champion), and Van Oranje Landzicht (2006 competition winner). In addition to showing our own horses, we also show those belonging to our clients. A good example is the elite mare Wendelrose, owned by Mr. Vink. The talented mare won the 2008/2009 Staal Service Zuidbroek Trophy.

Stuurboord

Stuurboord: Champion in harness & unique bloodlines!

Stuurboord also plays a surprising role in the fight against in-breeding. In many instances, he lowers the average in-breeding percentage because his sire Jonker and grandsire Factor (s.Vulcaan) carry somewhat different blood than the influential stallion Fabricius and his offspring.

PerformanceThe Dutch National Stallion Championship was a wonderful way to end a fantastic season in which Stuurboord bested his competition on several occasions. His show record proves that he is one of the few Dutch harness horse stallions that competes throughout the season and wins.

LineageStuurboord clearly descends from quality lineage! He inherited the best from both his sire Jonker and his dam Kendini: Jonker’s beautiful front end and front leg use coupled with Kendini’s great desire to work, will to perform, and powerful hind leg use. Jonker was the 1999 Dutch National Stallion Champion, and Kendini - with her spectacular trot - was the 1995 and 1996 National Selection Champion.

For years, Jonker has ranked at the top of the sport index and is one of Renovo’s most successful sons with respect to passing on sport talent. Kendini comes out of a strong dam-line with established sport talent, founded by the Poppen family, the 1999 Breeders of the year. Her granddam Zendrini won Sport Mare of the Year.

Reflections on 2008

In 2008, Stuurboord won two champion ships. At the World Championships in Beesd, he captured the title Dutch National Stallion Champion; and in Hoogland, he and Mark de Groot won the 2008 Young Riders competition. At the end of the year, the KWPN evaluated Stuurboord for his three-year-old and four-year-old offspring and upheld his approved stallion status.

BreedingStuurboord’s first offspring are now actively competing. Among these are B.J. Brommer’s Zandro and J.C. van de Endt’s Zuidwester, a selected stallion. Zuidwester (ds.Fabricius), the 2007 KWPN Stallion Selection Reserve Champion, performed brilliantly and won the Novice Class at Hippisch Hengelo with driver Marcel Ritsma.

Stuurboord’s offspring also advanced to the national selections in 2008. Two-year-old Barola (ds.Fabricius), bred by A. Meijerhof and owned by K. de Jong, as well as the three-year-old ster mare Aranda (ds.Fabricius), bred by H. Meijering and owned by G.W. van Norel, were invited to the National Harness Horse Day event. Due to her outstanding performance in the IBOP, Aranda was promoted to keur mare in the fall.

Doortje (ds.Fabricius, breeder: A. den Boer), Danser (ds.Manno, breeder: H.T. Leeuwis, Jr.), and Diana (ds.Waterman, breeder: A.J.G. Mulder) were all chosen for the National Foal Selection.

Stuurboord’s fans adore him. We hope that his win in the Dutch Breeding Stallion Championship will lead to even more breeders choosing this performance stallion this season. He deserves it!

Plain’s Liberator (keur Hackney)

AfstammingPlain’s Liberator is of course interesting because of the new blood he brings to breeding. After all, the fight against in-breeding must continue. In addition, he is a proven performer and a handsome black stallion. Plain’s Liberator passes on his black color well, which is desirable from a sales perspective.

Breeding is ultimately about a stallion’s ability to produce performance horses. Indeed Wervelwind (ds. Droomwals), owned by Clevering /Veenstra, is truly a top horse. Seldom beated by his competition, he has shown at the highest level of the Category 4 North - the

honor class - and he won the Championship. The active horse Zigemma (ds.Fortissimo), owned by the Kimenai brothers, easily won the Category 3 South competition. Remarkable horses in the Category 3 Central competition include Wodan K, owned by Wim Jansen; Zabrina, owned by W. Vierhouten; and Zilverling, owned by Johan de Heul.

Plain’s Liberator offspring were also successful in last year’s selections. The following two-year-old mares were invited to the National Harness Horse Day: Beyoncë (ds.Balmoral, breeder: K. Kwarten) and Briljant (ds.

Reflections on 2008

The year 2008 ended on a high note. The Dutch Hackney Studbook awarded the keur predicate to Plain’s Liberator based on his offspring, making him the first Hackney keur stallion! His offspring are successful Dutch harness horses. For example, Zepplin is his first son to receive KWPN approval, and other of his offspring took home champion sashes in 2008, including Wervelwind with Harm Jan Veenstra, the winners of the Category 4 North Honor Class and Zigemma with Cees Kimenai, winners of the Category 3 South competition.

Fabricius, breeder: W. Poppeliers). They finished in 4th and 7th place, respectively.Among two-year-old stallions, three Plain’s Liberator sons finished in the top 10! Be My King (ds.Manno, breeder: C.H. van Dijk) placed 4th, Bicker T (ds.Jonker, breeder: H.H.J. Tonnaer) came in 7th, and Barracuda (ds.Farao, breeder: A. Bonhof) finished 9th. Incidentally, Bicker T was the National Foal Selection Champion.

The filly Dasjkalina (ds.Manno, breeder: A. Snellens) placed 7th in the 2008 National Foal Selection final.

Our stallion Zepplin (ds.Fabricius, breeder: R. Tewis) was selected for the performance test last year after successfully completing a retest. He was subsequently registered in the studbook with outstanding scores. In 2009, Plain’s Liberator led the Stallion Selection with ten sons; among these, three became ster, and four were selected for the second round viewing. In the end, Be my King (ds.Manno, breeder: C.H.van Dijk; owners: HBC Stal, W. Prikken, F. & M. Huizinga, U. Haarsma, and N. van Maaswaal) and Black-Beauty (ds.Heineke, breeder: S.J. Verweij; owners: H.C. Vonk, H.J. van Oort, and U. Haarsma) were selected for Ermelo.

Hackney OffspringThe quality of Hackney breeding does not require much explanation - the keur predicate says it all. Plain’s Liberator has sired numerous 1st premium foals, champions, and reserve champions. Currently, he boasts four approved sons: Courage, Charming Daylight, Sam van Semarang, and Sterreljocht Suprise.

If you want to help reduce in-breeding and increase your chances of getting a black foal, then choose the proven performance stallion Plain´s Liberator!

Zepplin

Zepplin: Climbs to great heights!

Another important mare in this dam-line is the Brigadire daughter Irenie, dam to Nicolien (s.Jonkheer) and granddam to Zicolien. Irenie belonged to the Borkent family, the 1995 Breeders of the Year. She produced offspring including the honor class horse Urban (s.Navigator) and the show horses Ancie, Borg, and Zeldam, all descendants of the Borkent family’s stallion Storie. The show mare Melga keur (s.Heineke) is related to Irenie through another line.

PerformanceAt age three, Zepplin participated in the performance test but needed another year to mature. We believed in his talent as a show horse, and when he debuted in the Novice Class at the Utrecht Horse Days, he performed very well and placed fourth.

LineageZepplin is a Hackney-cross, as his sire Plain’s Liberator is a full Hackney. Because of his lineage, Zepplin brings fresh blood to breeding.

His dam, the ster mare Theodora, descends from proven bloodlines. She is by the foundation stallion Fabricius preferent, an influential sire. Theodora was evaluated by the Stallion Selection Committee and received an excellent report.

Her dam Ficolien ster preferent carries the blood of the keur stallion Wouter and the black stallion Monarch. The Wouter x Monarch combination, which was tested in the 1980s, has produced approved stallions such as Donau, Edelman, and Farao. Wouter performed well in harness and proved to be the best classically bred sire of recent times.

Because he developed wonderfully over time, we decided to present him again for the performance test. Throughout the entire retest, he impressed the judges. His test report describes him as a stallion with good uphill movement and very good neck carriage. In addition, he demonstrated a great deal of knee action with abundant stride length and good to very good bend in the joints of his hind legs, which he brings under his body well. His scores are impressive: 8 for desire to work; 8½ for carriage, suspension, hind leg use, and general impression as a Dutch harness horse; and 9½ for front leg action. Furthermore, the judges deemed him as having “great to very great talent as a Dutch harness horse.”

We had planned to show Zepplin last year in the national competition, but unfortunately an injury side-lined those plans. We are now preparing him for the 2009 competition.

Are you looking for new blood but not through a full Hackney? Then Zepplin is for you!

PerformanceLast year, we were impressed with Unieko’s progress in training. Therefore, we looked forward to the show season with complete confidence. Unieko didn’t disappoint us because Mark de Groot always finishes in the top group, and he even led the victory rounds in Doornspijk and Marum.

BreedingUnieko is more than an impressive show horse: he is also an excellent breeding stallion. In 2008, his offspring were noted for their outstanding performances. Unieko’s son Aquarel (ds.Koblenz, breeder: H.H.J. Tonnaer), the 2007 National Harness Horse Day Champion, was registered in the studbook with very good scores. At the National Harness Horse Day competition, the lovely mare Anca (ds.Waterman, Breeder/Owner: W.L. Ruinemans) showed her best and captured the Dutch Ster Mare Championship, scoring 84 points for

Unieko: Manno’s most athletic son!

LineageUnieko’s lineage includes top sires such as Manno, Cambridge Cole, Fabricius, Renovo, and Indiaan - an interesting mix of Manno’s unique Dutch harness horse qualities and Cambridge Cole’s outstanding athleticism. Unieko’s dam Colinda is a half-sister to the stallion Harmonie (s. Wilhelmus), who was exported to the U.S. Unieko’s granddam Osina is also the granddam of the show horse Sandokan (s. Lorton), who was the 2003 Category 3 South Champion.

Reflections on 2008

We look back with pride on Unieko’s good show season. However, we’re even more proud of his performance as a breeding stallion. His son Aquarel was registered in the studbook, and two of his daughters proved to be especially talented: Anca (Breeder/Owner: W. Ruinemans) was Dutch Ster Mare Champion at the National Harness Horse Day, and Aurose (Breeder/Owner: Th. Postma) finished number one in the 2008 IBOP.

conformation and 87 points for carriage and movement. In addition, she won the Central Selection West Championship for the second time, In the same class at the National Harness Horse Day, Aurose (ds.Fabricius, Breeder/Owner: Th. Postma of Kollumerpomp) placed 7th with 80 and 82 points, respectively. In the fall, Aurose showed in harness, earned 89 points in the IBOP, and received the keur predicate.

Furthermore, two-year-old Bimone (ds.Indurain, breeder: L. Hollander) was invited to the National Harness Horse Day. Her full sister Dimone competed in the National Foal Selection final, as did Dareda (ds.Hilbert, breeder: S. Daniëls) the Nijkerk Breeding Day Champion. Daminde (ds.Saffraan, breeder: E. Sneller) was also chosen for the National Foal Selection.

PerformanceCompeting under the name Afred at age two, Aquarel was the National Harness Horse Day Champion. At age three, he was easily selected for the performance test and subsequently was registered in the studbook with a good report. He proved himself an honest and reliable stallion with a strong desire to work. In his work, he demonstrated a great deal of knee action and stride length in his front legs. His hind legs flexed actively and came well under his body. He earned 8s for suspension, front leg action, desire to work, and general impression as a Dutch harness horse. Furthermore, he was deemed as having “a great deal of talent as a Dutch harness horse.”

At the last Stallion Selection in Den Bosch, Aquarel performed in harness for the first time. He has developed exceptionally well, and his performance was greatly praised.

Aquarel: A clear choice!

LineageAquarel is Unieko’s (s.Manno) first approved son and a product of his first year at stud. Aquarel’s dam is Petra ster, a daughter of the classically bred sire Koblenz (s.Fortissimo) who died prematurely. Koblenz blood, which proved itself in harness, is rare. This lineage makes Aquarel especially interesting for breeding. Undoubtedly, Koblenz passed on his harness horse qualities to Aquarel. Koblenz also sired the dams of two top show horses: Stal Schep’s Tobias and Stal Haarsma’s Vlo. Aquarel inherited his sport genes from Manno’s son Unieko as well as from the preferent stallions Waterman and Cambridge Cole from Aquarel’s dam-line.

Aquarel’s dam Petra also produced Stal Veerman’s show horse Victorie (s.Cinovo). In 2006, Victorie won the Category 3 Central competition and earned 61 points in the singles. He also proved himself in the pairs division last season. Aquarel’s great-granddam Difria ster preferent foaled the show horse Iwan ster (s. Zakerno), who earned 44 points.

The KWPN Dutch Harness HorseThe KWPN Dutch Harness Horse is one of the three breeding directions of the Royal Dutch Sporthorse (KWPN). One of the most succesfull studbooks in the world.

The unique KWPN Dutch Harness Horse is bred to perform in driving competitions and in harness horse classes. This harness horse displays a long moment of suspension in the trot, a broadly moving foreleg with high knee action and a powerfully carrying hindleg, in combination with a proud, high carriage, enhanced by the long, vertically set neck.

Show horseThe Dutch harness horse is in principle harnessed in front of a light show carriage. Light, because too much weight might have a negative effect on its action, and the Dutch harness horse is, above all, a show horse! The aim is to enhance its natural talent through training in order to produce a horse that displays a spectacular trot in front of the show carriage. Ideally, it should ‘sink’ behind, because it brings the hindquarters fully under, which causes the front to rise and makes the horse appear taller and taller. Carrying most of its weight behind, generating forward and upward power from its hindquarters, the harness horse gets more ‘air’ in front to be able to display its remarkable front action. It lifts the foreleg high from the shoulder and then places it well forwards. The broad moment of suspension, good balance and rhythm and fine coordination between fore- and hindquarters complement this ideal action, which, in combination with the lifted front, create an unforgettable sight. Expert juries assess the performance shown on both hands to decide on the individual placings

Driving horseThe Dutch harness horse holds a unique position in the world as a show horse but in recent years has gained immense international popularity as a driving horse.

The success of Dutch breeding was more than evident at the World Four-in-Hand Driving Championship 2008 in Beesd, where almost one-half of the entries were KWPN-bred, and more than half of those (a total of more than 25%) were harness horses! The Championship can easily be considered the major breakthrough event of the Dutch harness horse into the world of inter national driving. The entries were impressive for both their quantity and quality, which immediately became clear the first day in the dressage phase. Led by American Chester Weber, the dressage winner, the first five finishers were drivers whose teams included harness horses. The cones phase was won by another major proponent of Dutch harness horses, Australian Boyd Exell.

In the final standings of the Championship, Chardon won the gold, Weber the silver, and Exell the bronze, in turn making the KWPN the most successful studbook of the Championship due in large part to its harness horses. Chardon used three KWPN riding horses in the Championship. Weber’s carriage was headed by the Dutch harness horses Rolex W (s.Larix), Para (s.Harmonie), Boy W (s.Manno), and Jamaica (s.Cambridge Cole. Recently, Jamaica was honored as the 2008 USEF Horse of the Year. Exell’s team included Lordminster (s.Fabricius), Scampolo (s.Larix), and Selleen (s.Fabricius).

Finishing in fourth, fifth, and sixth place respectively were Joszef Dobrovitz of Hungary, Chistoph Sandmann of Germany, and Daniel Würgler of Switzerland. All three drivers used several harness horses in the Championship.
