Scriptures• Valley of Achor

• One of the greatest miracles – Jericho• Battle for Ai• Sin of Achan

• Joshua 7:24-25 (King James Version)•  24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah,

and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

•  25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.

• Today’s illustration – lots of “Achans” have cause troubles in the world due to sins such as greed, exploitation of natural resources, pollution, materialism, etc.

Scriptures

• Hosea 2:15 ( KJV) a story of redemption and restoration

• 15 And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

• Today’s illustration• From troubles to a door of hope, God can use us

to bring restoration to hopeless people

Background/History

• September 1989 started BSE program• January 1990 Dr. William Zuspan from Drexel

University gave a presentation on Appropriate Technology to the Intro to Engineering class

• Students asked for more! In 1992 Dr. Zuspan gave a semester long course.

• In 1994 started teaching a STW course every year as well as an ENGR 495 elective every 3 or 4 years

“Hog” Statistics

USA has 310 Million people ( as of Sep 2010)• Note: < 4.5% of world’s population• We use more than 35% of industrialized

countries’ energy production and 24% of all countries’ (world’s) energy production!

• In world• 5% of people have 75% of its income• 95% of people have 25% of its income

Why Energy?

• “. …[There is ] a growing consensus among policy-makers that energy is central to reducing poverty and hunger and improving health, increasing literacy and education, and improving the lives of women and children. Energy pervades all aspects of development- it creates healthier cooking environments, extends work and study hours through the provision of electric light, provides power in remote regions to drive cellular communication equipment, and increases labor productivity and agricultural output by making mechanization possible.“

Solar Statistics

• It’s abundant! • It’s renewable!• It does not pollute!• Enough sunlight falls on the Earth’s surface each

minute to meet the world ‘s energy demand for an entire year!

Potential Future Projects

• School for the Physically Challenged in Ethiopia with Joni and Friends

• African School of the Future in Liberia

• All of these could use Solar PV, Solar Heating, and Biofuels to meet their energy needs bringing HOPE to the people in these countries.

Another Miracle at Jericho• One part of the wall was left standing!• Rahab’s house• A Scarlet thread let down from her window saved her

and everyone in her house! Why?• She believed in the God who performed miracles for the

Israelites escaping from Egypt and the reports of the spies she protected.

• This was a foreshadowing of Christ’s redemption plan for all who believe.

• A hopeless woman (Ephesians 2:12) before the spies came to Jericho became a “door of hope” by being part of the lineage of Christ, our Hope of glory ( Colossians 1:27)

Conclusion

• Will you be Doors of Hope that will open this year for the Collaboratory to reach many people without hope, no matter what Collab group you are in? Here in Grantham, the USA, and the World!
