Hello, Eastern Star Church Family and Friends!
Another year has come where we take time to hear from God as a church
family. Annually, we use the Lent season to spend 40 days fasting and
praying for God to reveal Himself to us and for us to be transformed. As
Christians, our goal is to bring glory to God by becoming more like Christ
in our actions, attitudes, and abilities to attract unbelievers to Him. This
dedicated period of fasting helps us to refocus our hearts and minds for
this ultimate goal.
As a church family, we will walk through this fasting devotional
together. This year, we will concentrate on the majestic character of God.
I pray this devotional will help you gain new strength for the year ahead.
I hope that it will reveal new truths about who God is and how you should
respond to Him. It is my hope that each day will provide insightful
reflections and solutions to challenges.
I am excited about how God will speak to you during this time. Do not
miss this opportunity to grow in your faith.

INTRODUCTIONFasting brings us closer to God. Our hearts and minds must be focused
towards God so that He becomes the full source of our strength during the
fasting period. As Christians, we are strengthened and renewed.
“...Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being
renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16).
The fast at Eastern Star Church will follow these guidelines:
FAST TYPE
From Ash Wednesday, March 1 – Palm Sunday, April 9, we will follow a
modified Daniel Fast. We will primarily only eat fruits, vegetables, nuts,
and grains. We will only drink water and 100% juices. We will refrain
from eating meats, dairy, and sweets. (A sample menu is provided to give
you ideas on how to structure your meals. There is also a sample menu for
those who are diabetic or require an insulin resistant dietary plan).
One day every week, select a day when you will participate in a liquid fast
by only drinking liquids such as water and 100% fruit juices.
Alternative: For those of you who cannot fast because of medical reasons,
consider fasting certain types of food (sweets, soft drinks, etc.) or leisure
activities such as your favorite TV program and/or social media
(i.e. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
If you have any health conditions, please seek medical advice from
your physician before beginning any corporate food fast at Eastern Star
Church.

FAST PURPOSE
The purpose of fasting is to grow closer to Christ by removing something
from your routine that will prompt you to lean on Christ. While Jesus was
fasting 40 days in the wilderness, he stated, “It is written: ‘Man does not
live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’”
(Matthew 4:4). Often times, we can lose sight of this truth in our daily lives
so fasting helps us to remember this perspective.
This year, the emphasis of our devotional time is on God’s Majesty. In John
4:23, Jesus states that we are to worship God in spirit and in truth. Many
of us miss opportunities to worship God because we are not clear on who
He is. We reflect on what our parents, friends, and family say about Him
but we have not discovered the truths in God’s Word for ourselves. This
devotional will help every member reflect on various scriptures that reveal
God’s majestic character. We hope that spending time reflecting on these
truths will strengthen our relationship with God and therefore cause us to
be better disciples.
Each devotional will provide the following components: Scripture
(all scripture is taken from New American Standard Bible (NASB),
Comments, Further Reflections, and space for you to write your thoughts.
Although the fast lasts 40 days (March 1-April 9), this devotional will allow
you to focus for 47 days ending on Easter Sunday (March 1- April 16).

FASTING CONCLUSION
On Easter Sunday (April 16), we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus
Christ. We will also wear the God’s Majesty T-shirts as a church family.

MARCH 1 (Ash Wednesday)

I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. - Luke 5:32
Today is recognized as Ash Wednesday in the Christian community. On this day, believers all over the world take time to acknowledge their sinfulness by putting burned ashes on their foreheads in the shape of the cross. It is a time to reflect and repent (change your mind) of those sins. As the scripture above states, Jesus came to save those who recognized their sinfulness, therefore, acknowledging their need for salvation through Jesus Christ. The reality is we do not have to be afraid of acknowledging that we sin. God wants us to acknowledge our sins and confess them to Him for forgiveness (Psalm 51, 1 John 1:9). Sin separates us from a relationship with God, but praise God that He loved us enough to send His Son to die for our sins and restore our relationship with Him.
FURTHER REFLECTION We want to be perfect but God
wants us to recognize our sinfulness
so that we can receive His
forgiveness. Living for Christ, we can
often times forget the sins that we
commit daily that offend Him. Take
some time to reflect on how you miss
the mark daily. Be specific. Once you
have completed this list, repent of
those things and thank God for His
forgiveness.

MARCH 2
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was
tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them He was hungry. - Luke 4:1-2
Ash Wednesday (yesterday) marks the beginning of the Lent season. Lent is traditionally recognized as a 40 day fast where believers abstain from certain foods or other luxuries to commemorate the 40 days and nights that Christ fasted before His earthly ministry. At Eastern Star Church, we participate in a modified Daniel Fast during this season. The guidelines for the Daniel Fast are taken from Daniel 1:8-16, where Daniel and his friends only ate vegetables and drank water while training to serve in King Nebuchadnezzar’s service.
FURTHER REFLECTION Read the entire account of Jesus’ fast
and temptation (Luke 4:1-13). Jesus
was tempted in every way, but
without sin. We are tempted to sin in
a variety of areas such as sex
outside of marriage, gossip, over
eating, laziness, etc. Everyone is
tempted in different ways. Reflect on
the areas in your life where you are
tempted. List them and pray for God
to give you strength not to give in to
those temptations.

As we begin this fasting season, it will be easy to focus on the physical aspects of abstaining from food or whatever luxury you are choosing to remove from your daily routine. We will want to spend time with our friends talking about how difficult it is not to eat this or that or try to discover what recipes you can make to fill fuller each meal. It is important to understand that God is not looking at what foods you are choosing to eat but He is looking at your character. As the passage above states, God will not recognize our actions in fasting, if our behavior has not changed. He wants our attitudes and actions to reflect time spent with Him.
FURTHER REFLECTION In Isaiah 58, God lists various ways the children of Israel could demonstrate time spent with Him during their fast, “Loose the bonds of wickedness and undo the heavy burdens and let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke.” (Read Isaiah 58:6-9). List ways that you will demonstrate your time spent with Christ through your actions. For example, while you are fasting from food, you could commit to stopping behaviors that are disrespectful to others such as interrupting others when they are talking, talking over your spouse or complaining about your job to others.

MARCH 3Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed? Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all
your workers. Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high. - Isaiah 58:3-4

MARCH 4 When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they
disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your
Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. - Matthew 6:16-18
Although done as a church, fasting is a private experience. It is easy to get caught up in the need to be seen so others can perceive you as “SPIRITUAL” and therefore noble or honorable. There is some value in allowing others to know that you are fasting to help them to grow or even to expose them to this practice. We have to check our motives to ensure that we are not sharing this experience with others for the wrong reason. Commit to only sharing your experience with others when it is necessary or beneficial for the person receiving the information.
FURTHER REFLECTION We are fasting for the purpose of
drawing closer to Christ. Instead
of sharing with others that you are
fasting or if you find it necessary to
share, find a way to share Christ with
those in your family, on your job, or
any place where you have influence.
Sharing Jesus Christ with others will
do more good than telling people
that you are fasting.

MARCH 5Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father
of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any
affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
This scripture reminds us that God is our comforter. Many think when God comforts us, our troubles should go away. But if that were so, people would turn to God only out of a desire to be relieved of pain, not out of love for Him. We must understand that being comforted can also mean receiving strength, encouragement, and hope to deal with our challenges. The more we suffer, the more God gives us comfort. When we feel overwhelmed, we must allow God to comfort us. Remember every trial we endure will help us comfort others who may experience similar trials in the future.
FURTHER REFLECTION In suffering we learn things about
God that we can’t learn any other
way. Problems force us to look at
God and depend on Him instead of
ourselves. We will never know that
God is ALL we need, until He is ALL
we have. Reflect on challenges that
have occurred in your life that have
produced the greatest growth.

MARCH 6Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for
the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. - Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble…” This is a perfect verse to reflect on when we are staring at a new challenge or opportunity that God is directing in our life. We all will have doubts and fears when facing the unknown, but we must remember God’s promise, “He is the one who goes with us (v. 6). In this passage, God comforts the Israelites as they proceed to cross over the Jordan into the Promised Land; He will cross over ahead of you. When we face challenges that God has allowed, we can be confident that He will take care of us. He has already resolved the challenges ahead of us. Therefore, TODAY, be strong and courageous!
FURTHER REFLECTION When we are walking with God,
there will be times when He asks us
to do things that are uncomfortable
and cause us to feel fearful. Reflect
on areas in your life where you are
fearful because you are not sure of
the outcome. List those fears and
then write, “The Lord your God is the
one who goes with me. He will not
fail you or forsake me” Pray that the
Lord will help you remember this
truth and give you confidence in Him
to do what He has asked.

MARCH 7This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
- 1 John 1:5
In this passage, we are reminded that God is Light. When God is present, He reveals and pushes out darkness (evil). For example, when you are in a dark room and then turn on the light, darkness disappears. In the same way, where God is (the Light), darkness must disappear. John, the author of 1 John, states that if we walk with God, then we must walk in the light also (vs. 6). Wherever we are, darkness must be cast out around us and within us. Therefore, we must feel empowered to expose and eliminate evil in this world. Our fellowship with God, the Light, will give us strength to address it in our personal lives and this world.
FURTHER REFLECTION Reflect on the evil that is in this
world. Because of our relationship
with God, we are to be the light of
the world (Matthew 5:14). Ask God
to show you how you might help to
bring light to a dark world. God could
be calling you to advocate for
community centers or youth
programs, join a civic organization
that works to improve neighborhoods,
or write encouraging letters to those
in prison. There is much to be done.
Be open to His call.

MARCH 8Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God,
the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth. Does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable.
- Isaiah 40:28
The prophet Isaiah is describing God’s greatness to the people of Israel. He wants to remind them that nothing can be compared to the greatness of God, not physical idols (vs. 18-20), not rulers or judges (vs. 23-24), not people (vs. 7-8). NO ONE can compare to God. Even when we try to de-scribe Him, we are limited in our experience and vocabulary. The awesome truth about His greatness should humble us because God is all-powerful and all-knowing and yet cares for each of us personally. He is our advocate, and according to this verse, He never gets tired and He understands everything. Do not limit God and His work in your life by underestimating His power. He’s never too busy to listen and help.
FURTHER REFLECTION Life gets heavy at times and we
feel overwhelmed by our
circumstances, yet we must
remember we have an Advocate, God,
the creator of the earth!
Isaiah 40:31 tells us that, “Those who
hope in the Lord will renew their
strength.” When you feel life getting
heavy, take a deep breath and
remember you can depend on God to
renew your strength.

MARCH 9Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of
lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. - James 1:17
In chapter 1, James wants believers to not just hear the truth, but also put it into action. He contrasts empty faith with faith that works. As Christians, we will endure trials and tribulations, but successfully overcoming these adversities produces maturity and strong character. James 1:2 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.” James reminds us in 1:17, “Every good and perfect thing comes from above.” Everything from God is good and perfect. The challenges we face are either God allowed or God designed which makes them good and perfect.
FURTHER REFLECTION Don’t resent troubles when they
come. Pray for wisdom. God will
supply all you need to face adversity.
He will give you patience and keep
you strong in times of trials. List
three (3) things you can do to stay
focused on God’s presence when in
the midst of a storm.

MARCH 10I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of
Yours can be thwarted. - Job 42:1-2
Job was devastated after losing his family, wealth, and health. He began to wish that he was dead and became angry with God because he felt he was being treated unjustly by Him. God ultimately told Job that he didn’t have the right to tell Him what to do or how to handle any situation. God is all-powerful, and He can do whatever He pleases; He is sovereign. After being instructed by God (Job 38-41), Job finally surrenders and confesses that nothing can stop the plans of God, not even our complaints. We must come to the same conclusion.
FURTHER REFLECTION There is an old saying that goes, “Our
arms are too short to box with God.”
There has to come a time in our lives,
we surrender to the plan God has for
our lives even when it involves
difficult situations. We must trust
that He loves us and is doing all
things for our good. Pray about areas
in your life where you are resisting
His control. Ask God to help you trust
Him and graciously surrender to
His plans.

MARCH 11As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former
lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY,
FOR I AM HOLY.” - 1 Peter 1:14-16
When we think of being holy, we think of committing ourselves to Christ through our actions and attitudes. Those in relationship with God should not act like the world; we were set apart from the world to represent Christ in all things. We can’t straddle the fence, acting like Christ one day and then choosing to act like the world another day. God wants us to strive to be kind, forgiving, and self-controlled all the time. When we strive to be holy, we will experience a more exciting and fulfilled life.
FURTHER REFLECTION Living a holy life can be difficult if
we have not developed relationships
with others who are trying to live in
the same way. Make a list of people
in your life who are helping you to
pursue holiness. Today, thank them
for their positive influence in your
life. If you do not have this kind of
support, step out on faith and join a
ministry, attend Sunday School class
or Bible Study to help you develop
relationships with those who are
trying to live holy lives.

MARCH 12For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of
lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe. - Deuteronomy 10:17
In this passage, Moses is preparing the children of Israel to enter the Promised Land. He is encouraging them to fear the Lord, walk in His ways and not begin worshipping the gods of the land to which they are going. He reminds them that the God that they serve is the God of gods and the Lord of lords. Although we do not have the same gods that the Israelites had in Moses’ time, we can be enticed to worship people, material things (cars, jewelry, homes, clothing), popularity, and power. We have to ask ourselves, can these gods save us, give us good health, or are there when needed? These gods are temporary and only have earthly value. Our God is unchanging. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
FURTHER REFLECTION What gods are keeping you from
God? Make a list of those gods and
ask God to help you desire Him more
than those gods. Although it’s alright
to experience good friendships,
material things, popularity, and
power, when we desire them above
our relationship with God, we are out
of order.

MARCH 13 Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father
is perfect. - Matthew 5:48
Jesus is encouraging His disciples to be mature/complete as God is mature/complete. In this particular passage, Jesus is telling them to love their enemies, as this act demonstrates the perfecting process in their lives. Sinners will greet those that they like, but only those who follow Christ will also greet those who do not like them. Jesus demonstrated His love for His enemies when He died on the cross. “God demonstrated His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:9). When we think of being perfect as our Father is perfect, we often discover how selfish and worldly we are especially in our relationships with others. Our heavenly Father wants us to be perfect like Him by walking, talking, and living the life of Christ. He wants us to continually grow into a life that is loving, merciful, and forgiving.
FURTHER REFLECTION Has someone shown you kindness
when you didn’t deserve it? How did
that make you feel? We are to
mature daily into people that love
our enemies. This is the example that
Christ provided for us and expects
from us. Determine that you will
show kindness when someone is
unkind to you. Be an example of our
perfect heavenly Father!

MARCH 14“The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness,
forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the
third and the fourth generations.’ – Numbers 14:18
Stop and think about how we try to please people and yet, they get angry over the simple things in life. God is so loving and forgiving, but He will hold you accountable for your actions. Our God is a jealous God and doesn’t want anyone, or anything put before Him. God wants us to be His examples and live our lives like Christ while teaching our children to do the same. God wants us to be earthly examples so that our children don’t follow an ungodly example from generation to generation.
FURTHER REFLECTION When we do not correct sin in our
lives, God will allow that sin to trickle
down from generation to generation.
Reflect on the sin in your life that
may have been passed down from
your parents, grandparents, or other
older family members. Ask God to
help you break this stronghold in
your life so that you can be a better
example for the younger generation.

MARCH 15My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself
is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. - 1 John 2:1-2
It says in Roman 3:23 (ASV), “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.” John is writing this particular passage to let us know that when we sin, we have someone who will come alongside us, Jesus Christ. Sin requires death, “For the wages of sin is death,” (Romans 6:23); Christ’s death on the cross satisfies God’s need to punish sin. As the scripture states, this awesome gift is not only for those who believe. It is available to everyone who believes that the death of Jesus Christ will save them from the guilt of their sin. We need to pray that those who do not believe in Jesus Christ will come to accept His sacrifice on the cross.
FURTHER REFLECTION God desires to develop a relationship
with everyone. Write down people in
your home, on your job, and in your
neighborhood that do not have a
relationship with God through Jesus
Christ. Take some time to pray for
those on your list.

MARCH 16God is a righteous judge, And a God who has indignation
every day. - Psalm 7:11
The Living Bible states, “God is a judge who is perfectly fair, and he is angry with the wicked every day.” David wrote this verse when he was experiencing persecution by his enemies. He is crying out to God to justify him before his enemies. We also can be confident that God will vindicate us when we are falsely accused or persecuted for doing right. He will fight our battles, declaring us innocent before our accusers.
FURTHER REFLECTION Although His timing is not our time,
God will always declare innocence to
those who are innocent and punish
those who are wicked. Thank God
knowing that He will judge rightly
those who are wicked and will
vindicate those who have been done
unjustly. Do not wonder where He
is in all the injustice in this world.
Thank Him that in His time,
according to His purpose, He will
rightly judge.

MARCH 17“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes
away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. - John 15:1-2
Christ is the vine, and God is the gardener. In gardening, when one trims or prunes the branches, the branches will be more productive or fruitful. In this passage, the branches are followers of Christ. When Christians bear fruit, it shows that the believer is in close relationship with Christ. As our relationship with Christ (the vine) grows, God will remove people, places, and things that hinder our fruitfulness. This process, although painful, strengthens our character and faith in God.
FURTHER REFLECTION According to this passage, God acts
as the gardener for our lives
pruning us so that we are more
fruitful. Think about the word “fruit,”
what does it mean to you? In what
ways are you more fruitful as you
grow closer to Christ? Thank God
for the things and people He has
removed from your life so that you
can be more fruitful.

MARCH 18 I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, ‘Your eyes have
seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings; so the LORD shall do to all the kingdoms into which you are about to cross. Do not fear them, for the LORD your
God is the one fighting for you. - Deuteronomy 3:21-22
Joshua, Moses’ successor, led the children of Israel against persistent forces of evil into the Promised Land because of God. God pledged to help Joshua win every battle against the kingdoms that they would encounter on the journey; he was to fear nothing. Just like Joshua, our battle to accomplish the plans God has purposed for our lives may be met with persistent opposition. It can feel overwhelming at times. However, God promised to fight with and for us as we resist opposition. We can put our hope and confidence in Him. When our eyes stay focused on God and His ability to fight for us, we will not fear.
FURTHER REFLECTION Moses told Joshua to think about the
times when God fought for Israel in
the past so he would gain
confidence that He would fight for
them in the future. Think about ways
God has fought for you in the past.
Get strength from these past
experiences so that you will pursue
whatever He is calling you to do now
despite the opposition that may arise.

MARCH 19Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works
within us. - Ephesians 3:20
Ephesians 3:20 is Paul’s conclusion to the dynamic prayer for Christians living in the city of Ephesus. In proceeding verses, Paul discusses the infinite Depth, Length, Width and Height of God’s Love. In verse 20, Paul assures us that God “is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think.” Our thoughts on what we consider to be the best outcome to any situation, the perfect answer to any prayer, any expression of abundance we request cannot compare to what God has in store for us. Paul assures us that God’s Storehouse of “inexhaustible” blessings is available to those who “walk” with Him and glorify Him.
FURTHER REFLECTION The fast is an opportunity to have a
closer walk with Christ. We are at the
midway point in the fast and it may
be getting difficult. However, we must
remember Ephesians 3:20.
Whatever we have been asking God
for during this fast, He is able to
answer “abundantly beyond all that
we ask or think.” Remain committed
to this journey and thank God for
how He will answer your prayers.

MARCH 20“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?
- Numbers 23:19
Balak, king of Moab, summoned the prophet Balaam to place a curse on the Israelites who were camping in Moab on their way to the Promised Land. King Balak was very afraid that the Israelites would possess their land due to Israel’s prior victories. Despite King Balak’s insistence that Balaam curse the Israelites, God told Balaam to bless them. King Balak continues to pressure Balaam to curse them, and Balaam reminds him that God is not a liar; what He says He will do. We can rest assured that whatever God said He will do, He will do! We are accustomed to people changing their minds and breaking promises. However, God will “make good” on every one of His promises.
FURTHER REFLECTION What promises are you standing on
right now? To stand on the promises
of God you must know His promises.
He promised Eternal Life in Christ
Jesus (John 10:27-28). He promised
that all things work together for good
(Romans 8:28). He promised to
supply every need we have
(Philippians 4:19). There are many
others that will give you the power to
live for him. Search God’s promises in

the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. - 1 Corinthians 10:13
This verse speaks to the faithfulness of God during times of testing. No temptation is unique; it is common to all of mankind. We must flee temptation as soon as we are tempted. With every temptation, God has provided a way out. Temptation is not sin; however, it can lead to sin. Evil is ever present, and we have the free will to either accept and act out the temptation or ask God for guidance. After the tempting, God has promised strength to stand and a way of escape.
FURTHER REFLECTION List the areas in your life where you
are tempted. Will you trust God to
give you the strength to flee so that
you will be able to endure it? God is
able. Trust Him and see victory.

Not to us, O LORD, not to us, But to Your name give glory Because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth. Why should the nations say, “Where, now, is their God?” But our God is in the
heavens; He does whatever He pleases. - Psalms 115: 1-3
This is a Psalm of praise and complete trust in God. Israel was facing difficult times. Surrounding idolatrous nations were mocking the God of Israel. The Pagan enemies began to question, “Where is their God?” and to boast that their gods were too powerful for the God of Israel. The Psalmist starts with total praise and confidence in God, in the midst of distressed times. The Psalm recognizes God’s glory, His mercy, His faithfulness, and His sovereignty. “Not to us, O LORD, not to us, But to Your name give glory.” We must constantly praise God and never forget that God is our only refuge during difficult times.
FURTHER REFLECTION Have you ever questioned where
God is when you really need help? It
appears problems are surrounding
you and there is no way out. Difficult
times can be followed by despair or
maybe hopelessness. You may say,
“What is the use in fasting?” This is
the moment we must remember that
God is our refuge and begin to praise
Him. God’s grace and mercy will
guide us to joy when we trust and
glorify Him.

MARCH 23The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count
slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. - 2 Peter 3:9
Holding back judgment for the sake of souls being saved is not only a sign of maturity, but of love. As we become imitators of our Heavenly Father, we too will find ourselves being patient. When we could pronounce judgment on a person, we extend mercy by not giving up on those who challenge our moral fiber, pushing us to what we feel is our limit. In the natural perhaps we have met our limit, but when we humble ourselves, look to God for strength and empowerment, we find that we have supernatural ability to love the unlovable to life.
FURTHER REFLECTION Today, let us focus on imitating our
heavenly Father by the way we
behave and treat non-Christians.
God is love. His love flows through
us to be released to others. God is
patient. Let us exercise patience with
our loved-ones who don’t know Christ
and to others outside our home. Read
Ephesians 5:1-2 and 1 John 4:7-8.

This scripture encourages us to have an intense and passionate love for God. When we consider the love that we have for a spouse, child, or family member, we are careful not to hurt or harm that relationship. Love causes us to place value on a person and to hold them in high-esteem. This also applies to our Heavenly Father. Our love for God develops into maturity as we obey His Word and hold His teachings and instructions in high-esteem. Obeying God’s Word by following His instructions and commands is proof that we love and honor Him (1 John 2:4-6; John 14:15).
FURTHER REFLECTION When you look at your actions and
attitude, do you hold the Lord and
His teachings in high-esteem or is He
just someone you visit on Sunday?
If you love God, you will keep His
commandments. Pray that God will
help you honor Him daily.

This scripture is the most comprehensive of all scriptures. It fully explains the requirements and conditions specific to connecting with God. Everything we need to know about God can be found in Jesus. He is the expressed image of the Father. Not only is Jesus the way, truth, and life, but He is the door. He is living water, the bread of life; He is the light of the world. He is the word made flesh and He is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. He is God all by Himself! (John 10:9; John 10:30; John 6:35; John 8:12; John 1:14; John 1:29)
FURTHER REFLECTION Throughout our Christian walk, the
Holy Spirit will reveal areas in our
heart, behavior, and thinking that
need to change. He requires that we
grow up. Therefore, whatever He tells
you to do, just do it. No more excuses,
blaming, or complaining. Lost
humanity is waiting to see mature
sons of God (Romans 8:19; John 2:5;
Hebrews 12:1; 1Corinthians 13:11).

MARCH 26A jealous and avenging God is the Lord; the Lord is
avenging and wrathful. The Lord takes vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserves wrath for
His enemies. - Nahum 1:2
God’s jealousy does not look like our jealousy that consist of being envious or wanting what another person has. God is jealous when we take what rightfully belongs to Him and give it to someone else. In this case, it is worship, more specifically the worship of idols. Idol worship is idolatry; anything we place above God. Anything we offer adoration and worship to becomes a god. Everything we have and think that we are must be submitted to God, including our talents, ideologies, jobs, family, and money. God said, “You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3)

MARCH 27But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true
worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. - John 4:23-24
This passage lays out the qualifications for worship. Worshipping God is not something we will do in the future, but right now in spirit and truth. We are spiritual beings living in an earthly body. Our worship is not earned by works or fleshly good deeds. Worshipping in the spirit requires faith; knowing who we are as children of God. No room for condemnation, we simply worship on the premise of being justified by faith through the blood of Jesus and not because we have it all together. Flesh doesn’t get the glory in His presence. It’s truly a spirit thing.
FURTHER REFLECTION When and where we worship doesn’t
matter. Worshipping God is a lifestyle
based on the condition and
sincerity of the heart. True
worship can be seen in how we love
people and obey God. This honors
God and is the perfect example of

has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” God said to Moses,
“I AM WHO I AM,” and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, I AM has sent me to you. - Exodus 3:13-14
God called Moses to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt. Moses felt inadequate about doing this great task and was afraid that the people would not accept him as their leader. As he thinks about what he will say when he tells the people about God’s plan to deliver them from Egyptian bondage, he wonders how to answer when they ask who sent him. God says, “say I AM WHO I AM.” He is everything they need Him to be. He proved to be everything they needed Him to be as He protected them from Pharaoh’s army, fed them in the desert, and guided them into the Promised Land. God is the I AM in our lives as well. God is all that we need.
FURTHER REFLECTION Too often we can lose focus on the
fact that God is our everything. The
circumstances of life can cause us to
look to other people or other things
as the source of our happiness,
provision, direction, and peace.
Knowing that God is all that we need
helps us realize that we do not have
to be overly concerned about
changing jobs, friends, or health
diagnoses. What have you been

MARCH 29“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God,

God is the Beginning (Alpha) and the End (Omega) of all things. He was before us and He will be after us, when we are gone. He started this world, and He will end this world. When we think about God, we must remember how wonderful He is in this way. We know nobody else who can say this about themselves. Only God is eternal. God is in a class all by Himself, and we should be humbled to be in His presence.
FURTHER REFLECTION Thank God for the opportunity to be
in relationship with Him. When we
are in the presence of great people
who have accomplished great things,
we are in awe of being able to hear
them speak or watch them perform
their craft. Spend time in awe of
His eternity.

MARCH 30If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could
stand? But there is forgiveness with You, that You may be feared. - Psalm 130:3-4
God is a forgiving God. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12). Unlike people, He will not bring up past sins and make us feel ashamed and unworthy. Understanding that God forgives will help us rebound more quickly when we sin against Him. Scripture is clear that when we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us of all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). When we confess our sins, agreeing with God that our actions were wrong, He will help us to live the right way. What an awesome God we serve!
FURTHER REFLECTION Many of us have accepted the fact
that God forgives us but we have not
forgiven ourselves for the things that
we have done. Yet, if a holy and
righteous God can forgive us of our
sins, who are we that we cannot
forgive ourselves? We are not
greater than Him. Take some time
to reflect on areas in your life where
you have not forgiven yourself.

We do not have the power to keep ourselves committed to faith in Jesus Christ. God, through the power of His Holy Spirit, will keep us steadfast in our faith. He will work with us and help us to grow. It’s good to know that nobody can snatch us out of the His hand (John 10:27-29). Nothing can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8: 37-39). God will patiently chase after us leading us to righteous living so we can stand before Him blameless.
FURTHER REFLECTION Think about a time in your life when
you wanted to give up on following
Christ. How did you experience God
keeping you during that time?

God is our protector. He helps to keep us safe from people or things that could cause us harm. In this passage, David is reminding himself that God is his helper when he is being pursued by his enemies. Understanding that God was his protector and would preserve his life gave him great comfort. Although generally, we don’t have enemies physically chasing after us as David did, we may have people in our lives who mean to cause us harm. We do not have to get anxious and fearful; we just need to rest in the fact that God is our helper.
FURTHER REFLECTION Do you fear the actions of people in
your life? Is this fear causing you to
act in ways that are not pleasing to
God? Examine yourself and commit
to believing that God will protect
and aid you. Correct your behavior.

APRIL 2Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and

The word “love” in this passage of scripture is translated in the Greek as agape love. Wikipedia describes agape love as “the highest form of love.” It goes on to say that this type of love, “embraces a universal, unconditional love that transcends, that serves regardless of circumstance.” This same type of love described not only shows how God loves us, but who He is. Verse 10 in The Message Version says, “This is how God showed his love for us: God sent His only Son into the world so we might live through Him.” To fully understand God’s love, we must strive to love one another unconditionally, in a way that serves regardless of circumstance.
FURTHER REFLECTION As you pray, reflect on ways you can
show more agape love. Write down
how you plan to do this and to whom
you can show this type of love in a
better way.

I once heard someone say, “I am happiest when I am holiest.” Many times we find ourselves living in defeat due to our sin or the sin that surrounds us. The enemy wants to keep you bound in fear of going to God, rather than having reverence for the grace of God. The Amplified Version of this passage says, “He will be quiet in His love [making no mention of your past sins].” God is calling us to repentance. He is a loving God, and His grace is abundant. We must live a life of righteousness, even in the midst of a chaotic world. Because He is such a forgiving God, He gives the sinner what they do not deserve. Don’t let the enemy keep you bound in a war that God has already won.

Myles Munroe, a pastor and author, once said “All things must be maintained by the source from which it comes. The instant it is removed from the source, it dies, but the evidence of death is not immediate.” The moment you pull a flower from the ground, it begins to die, but it does not begin to wither right away. It still looks pretty on the outside, but something is going on inside that’s causing it to die. Living without Christ looks a lot like that flower. When you accept Christ as your personal savior, you no longer have to fear death because Christ already conquered it. Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” Be steadfast and immovable, remaining in Christ, our source.
FURTHER REFLECTION If your life is beginning to look like a
withering flower, it’s time to go back
to the source. Jesus can give life to
any dead situation you are facing.

Justice is a concept we all desire. In Isaiah chapter 10, the Prophet speaks on proud oppressors who abuse their power to pervert justice. But as you continue into chapter 12, God brings His judgment. There will come a day when justice will be served once and for all. Many times we put too much faith in man to bring justice when God says He is our salvation. We serve a just, fair God. So if God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31) It’s easy to become troubled looking at the events that occur in today’s society. But when injustice consumes us, we risk perpetuating the cycle of hate. We must put our faith in God. Just as He delivered His people from the hand of Pharaoh, He can deliver us from any situation we may face.
FURTHER REFLECTION In your personal study time, go back
and read Isaiah chapters 10-12. Ask
God to give you peace and remember
that He is your salvation.

Paul reminds the saints at Ephesus that at one time they were not a part of God’s family because they were not Jews (the circumcised). The saints were not allowed to participate in the relationship that the Jews had with God. In Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female; we are all one in Christ (Galatians 3:28). God is our peace by making all who believe in Jesus Christ, ONE big family. Despite our ethnicity, backgrounds, and other factors that could divide us, God wants us to relate to one another in unity.

segregated time of the week.

We’ve heard the phrase, “loose lips sink ships.” This scripture reminds us of the importance of being aware of our thoughts and words when speaking to God. Although God knows our hearts and intentions when we speak to Him, we must always be aware that we are talking to the maker of heaven and earth. It is a privilege to be in His presence and we need to be humble when we speak with Him. He wants us to reflect righteousness in thought, choice of words, and action.
FURTHER REFLECTION Reflect on your thoughts and how
you direct your words. Then see
what your choice of words
and conversation are revealing
concerning your heart. For the mouth
speaks what the heart is full of
(Luke 6:45). Pray and ask God to help

David, the author of this passage, personally knew the importance of shepherding. He tended to, fed, and guarded his flock as a child. Sheep must be aware of the shepherd’s presence and follow his lead. They are weak and defenseless without their shepherd. We too, are weak and defenseless without God’s shepherding. If we allow Him to guide us, He will lead us into a life of great peace; beside quiet waters, lying down by green pastures. How amazing!
FURTHER REFLECTION Philippians 4:7 tells us that if we let
our requests be made known to God,
He would give us a peace that
surpasses all understanding. If you
are not living in peace, could it be
that you are not remembering that
God is your shepherd? What
concerns have you chosen not to
share with Him? He will guide you
and give you peace.

APRIL 9 (PALM SUNDAY)
On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even
the King of Israel.” - John 12:12-13
Palm Sunday occurs the Sunday before Easter and represents Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem before His crucifixion and subsequent resurrection. Upon entering Jerusalem, the people laid palm branches at His feet and cried out Hosanna! Days later, the same people who praised Him cried out for Jesus to be crucified. They were looking for a savior to save them politically and missed that He was sent to save them spiritually. We can’t look to man to “save us” or to bring us peace from the trouble of this world. John 14:27 reminds us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.”
FURTHER REFLECTION Reflect on what our lives would look
like if we laid our lives at the feet
of Jesus just like the spectators laid
their palms down before Him as He
rode into Jerusalem. What is
preventing you from giving Him all
of your life? Identify your barriers
and pray for God to strengthen you
in those areas.

APRIL 10And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that
always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed; - 2 Corinthians 9:8
Paul was writing to the Corinthian Church at this time concerning generous giving. He encourages them that as they give to other churches, God will give to them even more so that they can continue to do good deeds. Take notice of how many times the word “all” is used. Paul wanted us to understand the fullness of God’s grace, which is the unmerited favor of God. Because of His grace, we are instructed to give and you will receive. Your gift will be returned to you pressed down, shaken together, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back (Luke 7:38).
FURTHER REFLECTION What are you doing with the
abundant grace God has given you?
Pray and ask God to show you how
to be a better steward of these
blessings. Matthew 25:29 tells us,
“To those who use well what they are
given, even more will be given, and
they will have abundance. But from

In the New Living Translation, verse 20 states, “Our God is a God who saves! The Sovereign Lord rescues us from death.” Through Calvary, we were given the opportunity to put to death shame, fear, doubt, and anything else that hinders us from being who He has called us to be. Romans 6:6 reminds us, we are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ, we were set free from the power of sin. Once we accept the Lord into our heart, that old thinking should change, and we should remind ourselves of how God sees us. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
FURTHER REFLECTION Reflect on what things you’re still
holding onto that belong to Christ?
Is it guilt, shame, condemnation, etc.

APRIL 12Opening his mouth, Peter said: “I most certainly understand now
that God is not one to show partiality.” - Acts 10:34
In this passage, Peter shares that salvation is not only for the Jews (God’s chosen people) but also for the Gentiles (those who were not Jews). The Jews were very prideful about their exclusive relationship with Him and struggled with the understanding that God wanted to save all of mankind, even the Gentiles. Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13). Understanding that God is not partial to any one person is freeing. Unlike people in this world, God doesn’t look at the outward appearance (clothes, group affiliations, background, money, etc.), God looks at the heart. What He does for one person, He will do for another.
FURTHER REFLECTION Thank God for His impartiality. God
is not partial to any one person and
He responds to our hearts. Thank
God that you do not have to be like
anybody else. He loves you just the
way you are!

APRIL 13Therefore the Lord longs to be gracious to you. And therefore He waits on high to have compassion on
you. For the Lord is a God of justice; How blessed are all those who long for Him. - Isaiah 30:18
Pastor Theron Williams says that justice flows naturally unless it is dammed up. And since God is a God of justice, it takes God Himself to interfere with that flow. Chapter 30 starts with the attitudes, the behaviors, and the plight of those of us who are obstinate, disobedient, and in opposition to God. It speaks of how God’s justice befalls each of us. But by verse 18, we see God’s attitude toward us. God doesn’t say, “Good riddance!” Instead, He longs to see us turn and return to Him so that He can lavish us with good things that accompany His unmerited favor (grace). And He can hardly wait to do it!
FURTHER REFLECTION The fact that God longs to be
gracious to us indicates that He loves
us very much! God is a God of justice.
He must punish the sin in our lives
yet He chooses to be patient with
us. In fact, He sent Jesus Christ to
take the punishment for our sins of
yesterday, today, and in the future.

APRIL 14 (GOOD FRIDAY)
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear
again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” - Romans 8:14-15
God is our Father! Everyone has different experiences with their earthly father, positive and negative. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, He becomes our big brother, and God becomes our spiritual Father. We no longer have to live in fear of God’s judgement, but we can now live in peace and closeness with Him because He is our Father. Just like with an earthly father, God’s DNA is now in us, His kindness, goodness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). We can be confident that He will walk with us as we live out His character in our lives.

God is the creator of the world. Although we learn about the Big Bang Theory in school, where all that is created is a result of a random explosion in the sky, those who believe in God know that God created all that is in the world (Colossians 1:16). He took nothing and made something beautiful. We can be confident that the same God that made something out of nothing in this world, is the same God that can take our nothing and make it something. We do not need to feel inadequate about our lives because the creator of the world is our Father. Despite our shortcomings, He can make our lives purposeful.
FURTHER REFLECTION Think about your life before meeting
Christ. How did you feel? Now, think
about your life after Christ. How has
your life changed? When we are in
Christ, we become a new creation
(2 Corinthians 5:17). Write out your
testimony and be prepared to share
with others how the Creator has
made you a new creation.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.”

Jesus told His disciples that He would be crucified and raised on the third day (Matthew 16:21-23). In this passage, the angel reminded the women of this truth when they visited the tomb and did not find Jesus there. In John 20:29, Jesus taught His disciple, Thomas, stating, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Thomas would not believe that Christ had risen until he saw Jesus’ pierced hands and feet. God wants us to believe Him first and then see what we have believed come to pass.
FURTHER REFLECTION As we celebrate Easter, think about
the many promises that God has
made true in your life. For example,
He said that He would be raised from
the dead and He was raised on the
third day. He said that He would
provide all of your needs according
to His riches in glory (Phil 4:19) and
He has provided for your needs.
Take some time to praise Him for all
the many promises He has kept in
your life.
Congratulations! You have completed our 2017 Fast. As a church family,
I pray we have been strengthened during this time of focused meditation
and listening to God. Our God is awesome, majestic, and able to do
exceedingly more than we can imagine. Don’t stop with the fast.
Continue to set aside time every day to connect with God through prayer.

Brown Rice Stir-Fry with Vegetables
INGREDIENTS
• ½ cup brown rice
• 1 cup red cabbage
• ½ head of broccoli
• ½ red bell pepper
• ½ zucchini
• 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
• 4 cloves of garlic
• 1 handful fresh parsley
• 1 red chili pepper
• 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce
• Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Cook the brown rice according to package directions.
2. Boil water in a wok or a sauce pan and add the veggies
(chopped).
Cook for 1 or 2 minutes. Drain the veggies and set aside.
3. Heat the oil in the wok or a skillet and add the garlic, chili
pepper and parsley (finely chopped). Cook over high heat for
1 or 2 minutes stirring occasionally.
4. Add the vegetables, the rice, and the tamari. Cook for about
1 or 2 minutes.
5. Add some sesame seeds for garnish (optional).

Southwest Quinoa Salad
INGREDIENTS
• 1 cup quinoa cooked according to package directions
(you can cook quinoa in either water or vegetable stock to add a
little more flavor)
• 14 ounce can black beans, drained and rinsed
• 14 ounce can corn, drained
• 1/2 of a large red bell pepper
• 4 green onions, diced
• 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
• Juice from 2 limes
• 1/3 cup olive oil
• 1 teaspoon ground cumin
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 1 teaspoon salt
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Cook 1 cup quinoa according to package directions. I like to cook
my quinoa in vegetable stock to add a little flavor. I also like to rinse
it before I cook it. To do this, just place the quinoa in a fine mesh
strainer and rinse it under water for a few minutes.
2. When the quinoa has finished cooking, fluff it with a fork, transfer it
to a large bowl, and allow it to cool completely (about 15 minutes).
3. In a small bowl whisk together lime juice, olive oil, ground cumin,
black pepper, and salt.
4. When the quinoa has cooled, add in black beans, corn, red bell
pepper, chopped green onions, and cilantro.
5. Stir in dressing and toss to coat.
6. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour before serving. Leftovers
the next day are even better!

Upside – Down Apple Pecan Pie-less
INGREDIENTS
• 1 cup chopped pecans
• ½ cup corn syrup
• ¼ cup maple syrup
• 2 Tbsp. honey
• 1/3 olive oil
• 1 tbsp. cornstarch
• 1 (14.5 oz) can sliced apples or 6 cups granny smith apples,
cored, peeled, and sliced
• ½ tsp. ground cinnamon
• ½ tsp. ground nutmeg
• 1 tsp. vanilla extract
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 375°F. In a 9-inch deep dish pie pan, combine
pecans, maple syrup, cornstarch and oil; place on bottom of
pan. In a large bowl combine apples, corn syrup, cinnamon,
vanilla and nutmeg. Mix well to coat apples. Place on top of
pecan mixture. Bake in an oven for 30 – 40 minutes or until
apples are soft and tender. When serving flip over so that
pecans will be on top.

Clean Eating Caramel Popcorn
INGREDIENTS
• 1/4 cup almond butter or peanut butter
• 1/2 cup honey
• 8-10 cups popped popcorn
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Read through the steps first so you know what you to. You’ll
need to work quickly.
2. In a small pot, warm the honey on high heat. Bring it to a
boil.
3. Let it boil up in the pot about 1-inch and then quickly
remove from heat.
4. Stir in nut butter with a whisk and whisk until smooth.
Should be “pourable.”
5. Pour over the popcorn and mix with a spoon. The mixture is
hot, so don’t be tempted to mix with your hands.
6. Let it all sit and cool.

Turnip and Mustard Greens
INGREDIENTS
• 2 ½ lb. mustard greens
• 2 ½ lbs. turnip greens
• ½ cup yellow onions, diced
• ¼ cup olive oil
• 2 cups vegetable stock
• Water as needed
• Salt and pepper to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
Wash and clean greens. Cut or tear into small pieces. Place oil
in large frying pan over low to medium heat. Sauté onions for
3 to 4 minutes. Add greens to pan. Fry greens for about 15 to
20 minutes, until tender, stirring frequently. Add salt and
pepper to taste. Add vegetable stock and cook for another
45 minutes or longer, until desired tenderness is reached. Add
water as needed (Greens naturally will make their own water).

Vegetarian Tuscan Kale and White Bean Soup
INGREDIENTS
• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 yellow onion, diced
• 4 large garlic cloves, thinly sliced
• 1 (32-ounce) box low-sodium vegetable broth
• 4 cups packed chopped kale
• 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes with Italian herbs
• 1 (14.5-ounce) can no-salt-added cannellini beans, drained
and rinsed
• 2 large carrots cut into coins
INSTRUCTIONS
1. In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat.
Add onion and carrots and cook 3 minutes.
2. Add garlic and cook 2 minutes longer.
3. Add broth, kale and tomatoes and cover.
4. Cook 5 minutes or until kale is tender.
5. Add beans and heat thoroughly.
6. Serve hot.
