Expanding Junior School

Hebron Happenings

Welcome

Newsletter No.31 Friday 19th October 2012 Dear Parents Welcome back to Hebron Christian College for the last term of the year. This term is only 8 weeks long so Christmas will be upon us before we know it!

We welcome 8 new children to our New Entrant class. They are (from left to right): OracleTukatelata, Jacob-Ave Brown, Connie Yang , Emily He , Emily Just, Sienna Stanaway and twins Charis & Necia Abrahams. Our school roll is 252.

Our Junior School department has expanded to the point that a new Year 1 class has been started this term. Mrs Debbie Smith is the new teacher and the class consists of 15 Year 1 children all of whom have spent at least 1 or 2 terms in Mrs Seah’s New Entrant room. The classroom was the old staffroom before it was turned into a classroom about 5 years ago. The Year 13 students have been using it as their common room for 3 years but have now been relocated to a room in the Rahiri mansion.

World Vision Scholarship Day by Emily-Anne Muli The Sanitarium World Vision Scholarship Week was an informative and eye-opening event that educated me in the likes of poverty, advocacy, and what I can do as a young person in order to make a change in the world. Because Hebron Christian College won both the Intermediate Scholarship and the Senior Scholarship, I had the privilege of attending the week with 33 other students across the nation. On the first day, we were met with a simulation activity, which consisted of us getting into pairs, walking to the end of the (very long and windy) road to fetch water in buckets, sell individual oranges to neighbouring businesses and pound millet – the staple food in many developing countries such as Mali and Niger. At first it was very tiring and tedious, and complaints were definitely heard! However, we realised what this activity was trying to portray, and the awful feeling of knowing that this is what many people have to endure hit us like a tonne of bricks. Going on the Tanzania Mission Trip in 2011 also made me feel even more connected to the issue.

Coming Up…

Throughout the week we were graced with many amazing speakers including Michael Duncan, who spent 10 years living with his family in the slums of Brazil, International Coordinators of World Vision and other organisations, and also speakers from the Auckland City Mission, Sanitarium, Royal Oak Baptist and other facilities that we had visited. Everyone got along well, and in the beginning of the week the chaperones had told us we would be a family by the end – they were most certainly correct! We were all emotionally and physically tired, but hearing the testimonies of people doing work out in the field encouraged us to continue this outside the scholarship week. It was an amazing experience and was made better by the award Hebron Christian College won – Highest amount raised for the 40 Hour Famine per person! Well done Hebron students! Next Wednesday, 3 intermediate students, Sun Jin Kim and the twins Lauren & Sophia Nobbs will spend the day at the South Auckland Life Church undertaking similar activities to those undertaken by Emily-Anne.

Science Extension Sue Breen from The Gifted Education Centre, spent the day with children from the Junior School undertaking science experiments centred around magnets. The children were asked to predict outcomes and then given the opportunity to experiment with the magnets to verify the accuracy of their predictions. The older students used magnets to build 3 dimensional shapes such as tetrahedrons, hexahedrons, icosahedrons, dodectenhedrons and, wait for it…an icosadoecahedron! The children worked as a group making their own magnet and turning it into a compass

Wastewise Programme Underway Mrs Scott, Middle School Leader and the “Wastewise” Club have been continue to implement an Auckland City council Wastewise programme in the school, minimising waste and doing everything possible to recycle waste. Food waste bins are now scattered throughout the school where food waste can be deposited and then fed to our worm farms. Classes are now collecting all their paper and cardboard waste and depositing it in a newly supplied “Paper from Homes” waste bin which will be emptied twice a week and from which we will earn $50/tonne. Children will be encouraged to bring their paper and cardboard from home to put in the bin to increase our payments.

Musical DVD & Photos

Primary Uniform Inspection Primary children will have their uniform inspected on Tuesday morning for compliance and parents informed on any deficiencies. Please ensure your child is correctly attired in the summer uniform AND ALL ITEMS ARE NAMED, including shoes and sandals. Junior Flower Show Children in the Junior classes (Rooms 6,7,8 & 18) will be spending next Wednesday preparing their items for the annual school Flower Show. Each child has been asked to create a miniature garden or a vegetable critter or a flower arrangement in their home and bring to school on the Wednesday morning. Each child will also make a sand saucer flower arrangement during school time also. Sports Teams & Cultural group Photos Next Thursday, the PhotoLife photographers will be along at school taking photos of all our sports teams and cultural groups. Children involved in these teams and groups will need to bring along relevant uniforms and we would ask if volunteer parent coaches, etc come along for the photos also. A schedule will be devised so that parent helpers don’t have to wait around too long for their snap! Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Handover Hebron Christian College will, once again, be participating in the annual Samaritan’s Purse “Operation Christmas Child” Shoebox appeal. A brochure has been given to every child in the school explaining the appeal and providing information on how to fill their shoe box, the money needed to help freight the boxes to Cambodia, etc. We have now deferred the Operation Christmas Child “Handover” to Friday 2nd November at lunchtime. If your child cannot obtain an empty shoebox for their gifts, kitset shoeboxes will be available in the foyer.

The Esther – Star of Persia DVD has now been produced and orders are now being taken. Cost $15. Go to: http://www.hebron.ac.nz/News++Events/Star+of+Persia+Photos.html The order form can be downloaded and your orders emailed to the school office ready for pickup early next term.
