New Principal Heather Gorrie believes there is room to grow engagement between the college, its students and the wider New Principal Heather Gorrie Believes there is room to grow engagement between the college, its students and tcommunity.Heather,who was previously Principal at Gisborne Girls High School for six and a half years, Principal at Rodney College for one year and Deputy Principal at Kawarau College for eight years, says her initial focus will be building on the things the college does well over the next few years. In a press release she said: The retiring Principals ab-solute commitment to his students was what particularly attracted me to apply for the position at Te Aroha College. I have spent my teaching and school leadership career focused on developing success for all students and this aligned with what Te Aroha College valued in its vision for success. Interviewed for the Advertiser she said: The next five years will see considerable change nationally as school-ing moves ahead and we aim to be keeping our students at the cutting edge. This college has programmes that would make other schools in New Zealand envious. I cant say enough for the work that has been done here. We just want to keep growing a great school.Heather said her aim was to support students to grow as well rounded resilient young people who appreciate the importance of community involvement alongside personal success. There is room for further developing engagement within the community, she said. I want our students to be able to contribute as part of the wider community as they work toward their future goals. Aroha ObservationsI'd like to start the year by saying a big THANK YOU to everyone who has dropped in, sent emails, called (this is starting to sound like a bereavement thank you)...into the office over the past month. Your support has been invaluable. Great to know you care about the Advertiser and you back us. As I am typing this, I'm looking at light rain falling outside. Good stuff. Then I thought "it's just not enough" which then got me thinking that quite often we are just never happy. Nothing's ever enough and we can get caught up in the cycle of moaning and complaining. I have had several people tell me that our beautiful, scenic, spa town is "dying'...(lack of rain perhaps?)...because there is 'nothing here'....variety of shops are limited and there are empty shops in the main street etc...they invariably hark back to the days when Farmers was here and the town was 'thriving'. Well, fair enough. It's ok to remember better times. We all do it. But don't live back there. You can't wish us back to those times...because frankly, flares and the 'bowl cut' just wouldn't cut it with me. We cannot change the past, but we can do something about the future. Shop local..! (don't roll your eyes). It's really simple. AA says it costs you .75 cents per km to run your car, so a trip to the Red Shed in Morrinsville...add another $30 bucks then add your time getting there and back..it's not looking so cheap now is it? We need to drop the 'Grass is greener' attitude and start watering our own grass...which brings me back to the rain...it's stopped...it wasn't enough. But at least we got some!!!!

Heather has four kids of her own Julian 11, Hannah 8, Michael 6 and Olivia who will be 3 in March. Heather lost her husband to cancer at the end of 2013. My kids keep me very real, she says. Parenting isnt an easy job as kids go through many highs and lows as they grow up but I believe all parents try their best and want the best for their kids.After a month in Te Aroha, the whole family believes they have landed in a little piece of paradise and are settling in within the Te Aroha community. We are also looking forward to being closer to family and friends in Hamilton. Among the list of things to do she made with her late husband was start again. We couldnt have found a more perfect place for it, she says.

Keeping the news that Te Arohas Colin Hallett had been nominated for a Queens Service Medal for services to Search and Rescue in the New Years Honours list a secret was not too much of a problem, the former footwear retailer says.He received the news in September but tried to put it out of his mind because it hadnt been confirmed, so it might not happen. It did happen, however, and Colin shared the news with his wife Ina on Christmas morning.She had helped me during my 27 years with Venturer Scouts and I helped her out with Girl Guides which she took, so it was a team effort, he said. Those days with the Venturers and Guides were the most enjoyable part of my life. I got a huge amount of pleasure taking them canoing, tramping and rafting - Id recommend it to anybody.A keen tramper Colin has been with Search and Rescue since 1966. It was formed shortly after a DC3 crashed in the Kaimai Range with the loss of all 23 aboard.In the early days Search and Rescue, which was about 90-strong, was required frequently with people getting lost in the bush on the mountain in the dark. It was hard yakka, but you didnt think of that, he said. And boy were they pleased to see you when you located them. The introduction of mobile phones has reduced the number of callouts considerably and Civil Defence has taken over rescue work with a heavy rescue team and a light rescue team. Colin was in the light rescue team handling storm damage problems, blown-off roofs and the like. But unexpectedly and unannounced the teams were replaced by the Fire BrigadeNews of Colins award has brought a great deal of response. Ive been hearing from Venturers mums , ex-Venturers even a girl I went to primary school with, he said.How does he celebrate the award? He went tramping, of course.

Te Aroha Business Association Promotional FilmA promotional film, a year in the planning, was finally given 'lift off' when filming started a couple of weeks ago. To completely capture the 'essence' of Te Aroha a drone was used to film a lot of the scenes, which were filmed on the mountain and around our tourist hot spots. The drone is an unmanned aircraft with a camera attached, for filming at great angles and distances. The five minute long DVD will be available for viewing on You Tube, on the DoC website and at i-Site. Local children were brought in for the domain and railway scenes, and Shaun O'Neill and his wife, Jillian were the bikers and trampers in the DVD. Advertiser has had a sneak peek at the first edit version. It will be a great promo DVD for the town. Mary Massey from the Te Aroha Miniature Mountain Railway was at the railway station for the filming and opened up the railway for the children and others who came to help with and view the filming. There is an awesome miniature display there. We have so many wonderful places to walk, places to visit and things to do, hopefully this DVD will help bring more people to Te Aroha. Wouldn't it be great if other people discovered what we already know we have.

The Cost of Education and Health by Catherine Delahunty, Green Party MP

It's been a beautiful if dry summer on the Coromandel and its hard to contemplate going back to the city and spending hours and hours in a building with windows which don't open. However I am not complaining about having the security of a job that pays well. I am only too aware that many families in the area, whether in paid work or not are struggling to cover the bills, and right now the costs of education. The state education system is not free and many families face uniform and equipment costs which compete with food on the table and petrol in the car. Some schools might even expect students to have ipads or laptops but for many I have met paying off an IT device for several children is just completely impossible. I recently attended a seminar about a health and education system which was like another world. The Cuban health system provides a doctor for every 180 people and all medical care is free. They send doctors all over the world including to Pacific nations and Africa to help communities. All dental care is free and all education is free. Everyone learns to dance and everyone grows local food to supplement an allocation of rice and beans. This sounds so alien to us but according to my friend who went there it was a country which genuinely puts people before profit despite a US blockade that has prevented trade with nearby countries. Its not perfect but its interesting to reflect on the possibility of a country where all children are fed and educated and get the health care and dental care they need as a matter of course.

This is not an impossible dream, its a decision we could make. We would have to decide that people are the most important thing and commit resources to those values. Or we can keep on allowing the Government to implement policies that entrench inequality. Communities thrive when inequality is reduced, its not rocket science, its just a decision that we should be discussing. I am not suggesting we imitate Latin America as we have a different history but I think we should consider what a collective Kiwi dream might look like based on the common good.

Is this the Country's worst intersection?You know the one...people from out of town stop when turning left past the Palace Hotel, there's constant tooting from drivers not stopping at the Compulsory Stop sign. Others stop at the Give Way sign, giving way to the people at the Compulsory Stop sign. Drivers coming up Kenrick Street and down from the clock where nobody seems to know who to give way to so you stop, waiting politely hoping that the driver in the other car knows the road rules, then after that long and uncomfortable pause, you both decide to go at once causing the embarassing "I'm sorry" mouthing and hand waving. Or worse, being waved at by the middle finger with shouting. The Advertiser spoke to one retailer who said that by his reckoning, almost 80% of traffic does NOT stop at the Compulsory Stop sign and every day there are several incidents of 'near misses'. Dont you hate it when youre adamant that youre absolutely right only to discover subsequently youd got it wrong? The car was in need of re-registering shortly after Christmas and remembering a hassle Id run into previously I checked to make sure the WOF was not due as well. Unfortunately the mechanics handwrit-ing was not exactly copperplate and try as I might I couldnt decipher what date he had written on the label. I did notice, however, studying it from the comfort of my drivers seat, that the hole punched around the side of the label indicated the month due was 1 and the hole at the bottom indicated 15. So with the wisdom of all my years, which are far too great to punch a hole in, I deduced that the warrant was due on January 15. So I marched into the Post Shop and slapped my regis-tration form on the counter. Into the computer it went and You need a warrant of fitness first, I was told. It doesnt expire until the 15th I replied.If its less than a week away they wont do it, sug-gested the woman behind the counter.

At this stage I expostu-lated, or at least I would have done if Id known what it meant. Hmph!I left giving a very good impression of a grumpy old man.When I next saw the mechanic I raised the vexatious issue with him. When did the warrant expire? I asked.On the 7th, he said. So why did it have 15 punched? I asked.They.ve changed it now, thats the year 2015.Ooops.

I had a phone call from a lady a few weeks ago who insisted on coming along to tell me her story in per-son. It seems she, too, hated it when shed been adamant she was right only to discover she was anything but. Seems shed been driving up Kenrick Street to that well-known location that shall be nameless, signalling to turn right into Whitakers Street south. At the inter-section she noticed a young woman driving down past the clock tower from Church Street. She waited for the woman to come through but no she waited. My visitor gesticulated to her to come on through - but no she waited. The standoff persisted for some time until finally, greatly exasperated by the turn of events, she drove on through taking pains to make her feelings for the driver of the other car abundantly clear with some choice words that would make a shearer blush. In high dudgeon she finally found a parking space and paused to gather her thoughts. Then it struck her - she was the one with right of way. My embarrassed visitor pleaded with me to mention that the realisation had filled her with misgivings about her behaviour. Please apologise to the young lady whoever she was, she asked.It might be difficult, its my guess that it probably happens a couple of dozen times a day EVERY DAY.

This point of difference is what won Tony Lauder of Te Aroha Tyrepower the Personality of the Year at the recent Goodyear National Conference, held in Vietnam. Tony and his partner Lou Beer, had a great time in Vietnam, soaking up all the culture, sights and entertainment that Ho Chi Minh city had to offer. accident occurred. Another man named Edward Burton was standing on top of the stone breaker at the time it fell, but escaped with only a slight wound in the leg. Mr McKay, the manager in charge of the erection of the machinery was also employed at the timo near where the stone breaker fell, and had a very narrow escape. The tackle was well tied when raising the mass off the floor, and was thought to be sufficiently strong and perfectly safe, and no one apprehended that anything would give way, however the hawser, which was an eight-inch one, made of coir, snapped as already stated, although it appeared to be solid and strong. The deceased at the time of the accident was in" the act of assisting Burton to take up a portion of the weights by hauling in an endless chain tackle fixed to abeam immediately above, and hooked on to a strop at the lower end of the stone breaker. When the accident occurred, Robinson was apparently about three feet from the skids, and no doubt would have escaped serious injuries if the stone breaker had lain where it had landed, but the foot of the breaker was on the opposite side to where Robinson was standing, and being considerably longer than the other side it landed on the longest part first, and immediately canted over about two foot, thus striking Robinson before he could get away. The news of the sad occurrence threw a great gloom over the whole place, as deceased was widely known and highly respected. Mr Dobsun, of Te Aroha, brother-inlaw of the deceased, proceeded to Waiorongomai immediately on hearing of the accident, and took all necessary steps towards disposing of the remains until an inquest could be held.THE INQUEST An inquest was held on Monday, the 21th, in the Premier Hotel, "Waiorongomui, before Harry Iveuriek, Esq Coroner, and a jury consisting of Messrs Samuel L. Hirst (Foreman), David Wallace, Charles Fugill, Samuel T. Sinardon, Wm. Roycroffc, John Borrie, and James Forsman. Alexander T. Me Kay millwright and engineer, Edward Burton and Johane Myers were examined relative to the accident and the evidence went to prove that the cause of death was accidental and a verdict was returned to that effect and that no one was to blame.FUNERAL: At 3 o'clock on Monday the remains were conveyed from the residence of Mr Thomas Scott at Waiorongomai to Mr Dobsons at Te Aroha. A large number of the inhabitants of Waiorongomai and Te Aroha attended and followed the body to Mr Dobsons house, and expressed the utmost sympathy with the relatives on their loss. The coffin was conveyed on Tuesday morning by train to Ellerslie, and the remains buried at Howick, at which place the father and mother of the deceased are still living. Thomas Robinson was aged 42 and unmarried.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT WAIORONGOMAI."In tbe midst of life we are in death These words are often lightly spoken by many who do not pause to consider their solemn meaning. The truism was terribly exemplified in our rniust on Saturday last. In the forenoon of that day Thomas Robinson, a well-known resident of Waiorongomai, met with his death whilst employed at the works now in progress r.t the New Era Battery. Deceased and several others were engaged in assisting 1 to raise the stone breaker (a large iron casting weighing upwards of three tons) from the floor of the battery to a place where it is to be fixed a little above the newly-erected furnace, and about fifty feet above the battery site. After the stone breaker had been raised about four feet, the hawser to which the tackle was attached, suddenly parted with the strain, and the large mass of iron fell to the bottom of the skids with a fearful crash, and, canting a little to one side, struck Robinson, crushing part of his chest, breaking fire 'of his ribs, and injuring him so severely that he died within ten minutes from the time the

The Te Aroha News was the first newspaper published in Te Aroha, in the Waikato. The town was relatively late in getting its own newspaper, as it was well served by papers published nearby in Thames.

The first issue was published by HE Whitaker, on 9 June 1883, under the title Te Aroha News and Upper Thames Advocate. The paper was issued weekly. In 1884 ownership passed to John Ilott and the name changed to the Te Aroha and Ohinemuri News.

Over the next 40 years various other newspapers were published in Te Aroha; however none posed a serious threat to the News. The paper absorbed its main competitor, the Te Aroha Mail (1907-1918), in 1918.

In 1913 the Te Aroha News Company acquired the News and continued to publish the paper until 1982. In July that year the company went into receivership and the last issue of the paper came out on 17 September 1982. However, at the end of that month, a new paper with the same name began publishing in Te Aroha. This newspaper merged with the Piako Post in 1986.

In March 2012 Jim Lucy owner of Te Aroha Print set up and started publishing the Aroha Advertiser. There was a gap for local news, and local advertisers needed a local forum.This has grown and is now a well loved publication. The Aroha Advertiser was purchased by Linda Forsman and Ron House in December 2014 and will continue to develop and grow with the wonderful support of the Te Aroha community.

They Also Serve looks at a part of our history which has been largely overlooked in the current Centenary commemorations of the Great World War of 1914-1918. Some 700 women left New Zealand to serve as nurses, and in similar roles, with the NZ Forces overseas and those from allied countries. Sadly some never returned. Their stories are thankfully not neglected. Ilona and Cathie will bring you the tales and the music of the women who stayed in NZ and helped their men from the other side of the world in some very unusual and sometimes amusing ways. Te Aroha Shows Festive SpiritPeople who were alone on Christmas Day not only had a place to go to enjoy the fellowship of other residents, they also had a feast fit for a King at St Josephs Church Hall..The Annual Te Aroha Community Christmas Day Dinner now in its 18th year, was held at St Josephs Catholic Hall and attracted 150 people who sat down to a beautiful two course meal, comprising Turkey & Ham, eight salads, plus potatoes peas, and many different puddings. Punch (kindly donated by Te Aroha Super Liquor) & Nibbles were served before the meal.While the volunteer organised event, originally started by Te Aroha residents Tom and Corolyn Stephenson, increases in popularity each year, we are still overwhelmed by the generosity of the churches, business and surrounding com-munity. People donated hams, turkeys, potatoes, pavlova rolls, meringues and punch with many donations of money from individuals as well as trusts, and with the help from the 28 volunteers everything went without a hitch.The dinner is free but many people donated generously. Food that was left was given to people who attended the din-ner to take home. Nothing was wasted.In December, we were astounded by the generosity and sup-port of the Te Aroha and surrounding community, and we wish to thank the Rotary Club of Te Aroha for setting up the hall and the many volunteers for their help to prepare and serve the dinner and clean up. It would have been a big a huge task without their help. YOUTH EMPOWERMENT SERVICESThe Youth Empowerment Service are seeking new recruits for the Youth Development Program.The program known as 'YES Factor' provides opportunities to gain skills in event coordination, communication and team work while increasing confidence through the organisation and delivery of Youth Events.We already have funding for two events for 2015; The first will be slime party in March and the second will be another quiz night.The Youth Leader-ship Development Program has been in operation for 3 years with some of our original crew still involved. When not work-ing on events the YES Factor Crew participate in fundraising initiatives. Money raised is used to fund outings such as trips to performances and Rainbows end. A portion of any profits goes back to the members to assist them in obtaining their driving licences.Meetings are on Wednesdays at 3.30pm. The View From ThePALACE WINDOWLooking south from the Palace there's a ray of shining light coming from 132 Whitaker St where the Aroha Advertiser and Pittsy's Radio (it will always be Pittsy's to me) have a new lease of life and the promise of future continuation. Thanks Ron and Linda for keeping an integral part of the community going.My wife and I recently helped form Keep Te Aroha Beautiful, a branch of Keep NZ Beautiful. Apart from sorting out some graffiti in town there hasnt been a lot to do. Our community does a pretty good job already.When talking to visitors to town, we hear phrases like Piece of Paradise Hidden Gem Step back in time, and it makes me proud to be part of this town.Like all towns we have our under belly. Our villains, drugs, vandals and political bureaucrats, but these are over shadowed by the real people.We have a uniqueness and individuality about us. Were a destination town on the side of a mountain playground, yet supported by a large rural and commercial industry that sees low unemployment and mostly owner operated businesses.As you can tell Im pretty passionate about our Village and for those of you who get fed up with not having Fast-food or being unable to buy smokes and alcohol after 9 or buy shoes or white wear etc, take some time away and on your return you may also see that Little Piece of Paradise.TE AROHA..YOU ROCK

A Resident'sRamblings

To Berm or not to Berm.that is the question!According to the recurring observations of the numerous visitors to our town we, as residents ot Te Aroha, are privileged to live in what is arguably one of New Zealands prettiest and well-kept small towns. However one of the detracting sights to be seen around this lovely town of ours has to be the odd unkempt berm which, at this time of year it is not only unsightly but could also be deemed to be a fire hazard. The question needs to be asked if leaving them unmown is acceptable and if not, then whose responsibility is it to maintain these bermsCouncil? The adjoining section owner?I presume that local Council legally owns these berms, but a number of years ago relinquished responsibility in regards to the maintenance of them. Their plausible argument would be that the cost of continuing to maintain these berms would be expensive and would need to be covered by increasing rates, thus a cost to all rate payers. But is this fair to those who diligently maintain their own berms? Should we then place the onus on those residents in the adjoining property? Some of these are elderly and are not capable of maintaining them and/or would struggle to afford the extra cost. Others are tenants or owners who simply believe it is not their responsibility. Should Council maintain them and then charge the adjoining ratepayer?It would not be an unreasonable assumption to presume that if Council started to mow just the unmown Berms, then very few of us would be mowing them. So logic therefore depicts that it is an all or nothing scenarioInteresting to note was that last week some property owners in town received a letter from Council informing them that the property owned by you may have become overgrown and could potentially becom a fire hazard. The letter goes on to state when weather conditions exist that require the restriction to be imposed (December 20) there is a higher likelihood of vegetation posing a fire hazard and Council request that you remedy the situation at your earliest convenienceIs this not somewhat hypocritical on Councils part considering the amount of land that they own which could be considered a hazard and which has not been remedied at their earliest convenience. Tut tut council.This issue needs to be resolved, if not for the hazard factor, then to maintain Towns high standards and beauty. The decision on who you perceive to be responsible I will leave to the reader but it would be nice if someone stepped up and sorted the problem.

Regular walking track users will be aware of the work done to improve accessibility to the Tutumangao Falls, which has made it an easy and beautiful walk for locals and visitors. We hope everyone had a relaxing Christmas and New-Year. The Association has been busy, and we are looking forward to an even busier 2015.Christmas PromotionThanks to our committee Allison Ward, Kay Russell, Sarah Matafeo-Ross, Tara Werder and Ron House, for organising another successful promotion and congratulations to all the winners.Promotional ClipWe obtained funding from Grassroots Trust to complete a promotional clip for the town. The final result will be a 30second and a 60 second add suitable for broadcast and the web. We will also receive a 4 5 minute clip, which will be suitable for the web, promotion and information display, with an additional cut specifically for DOC who agreed to waive fees to film on their land for access to the footage. DOC have advised that they may be interested to display it their website and/or at their visitor centres.The brief to Central TV was movie trailer quality production. With the Drone footage captured by Virtuoso on Monday 20th January we are well on our way to having some good media collateral that we can help promote our fantastic Town. Thanks to Kaimai Valley Services, Lance and Jim who helped with access to the mountain and Council staff at the domain, pools and spas. It is surprising how much time and effort goes into such a short production. However, provided the quality is as expected this will be a valuable tool in promoting our Town and the District, thanks to all those involved.Mountain RadioThanks to Linda and her team for getting the music back in the streets. This is an iconic part of Te Aroha and we are all keen to see it remain part of town for years to come. Water LevelsWith all this hot weather our water supplies have been under some pressure. Little Dripper has been pop-ping up around the district to bring you up to date with water restrictions. Keep an eye out for the billboards and posters around town and in the paper or check out our website and Facebook page for updates and handy tips on how you can save water. Be on the lookout for our cool water saving competition starting soon and you could win a family pass to the pools.

Restricted Fire SeasonPredictions of more dry weather mean a restricted fire season is in place for the Matamata-Piako District, including Department of Conservation land. All open fires must have a permit before be-ing lit and currently no permits are being issued. Though some areas of the district are still reasonably green the risk of fire is continuing to rise.

Croquet club members dressed in their new uniforms that are the envy of the other croquet clubs. Croquet is played Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 10.00am. "The club is keen for new members who will be made very welcome" said Club President Maurice Hight. Croquet is an easy game to play and the club will lend you mallets.

The Community Choir, an exciting innovation on the Te Aroha Arts Scene had an amazing 2014 growing in both sound and repertoire. The vocal group performed at the Te Aroha Arts Festival - Music Mix in May, Morrinsville Art Festival in September and again at the Open Art Show in December. Amazing workshops delivered by international backing vocalist Sharlene Hector ( Basement Jaxx, Stevie Wonder ) in March plus an ongoing series with British/Caribbean recording artist, music producer and song writer Kevin Mark Trail raised the bar. An original song 'Aroha Aroha' written by the group with Kevin's direction will be recorded shortly and had its world premiere at the Open Art Show in December.The 2015 Season kicks off with rehearsals and workshops every Wednesday 6:15pm at the Senior Citizens Hall. All voices are very welcome to join this expanding group. An exciting programme is being developed for this year with Festivals, Performances and Recordings. We are looking forall voices aged 12 upwards and especially welcome male voices.
