The Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Church dedicates the month of June to the special honor

of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. While this devotion has long been

part of Church practice, it received a new and richer meaning

through private revelations made to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was a member of a religious community called

the Sisters of the Visitation. Since the Visitation Sisters are a cloistered

community, this holy woman had the great joy of spending countless hours in

prayer and devotion before Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. During her

prayer before the Tabernacle at the Visitation Convent in Paray-le-Monial, France,

she began to experience visions of Jesus. A series of these visions began on

December 27, 1673, and lasted for approximately eighteen months. Through

these visions, Jesus made known to her His great desire to have her spread

devotion to His Sacred Heart throughout the universal Church. Pope Clement XIII

approved this devotion to the Sacred Heart in 1765. Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque

was canonized a Saint in 1920.

During her private revelations, the Lord made twelve promises to St. Margaret Mary

about graces and blessings those who had devotion to His Most Sacred Heart

would receive. Those promises are:

1. I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.

2. I will establish peace in their families.

3. I will console them in all their difficulties.

4. I will be their secure refuge during life, and especially at the hour of death.

5. I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.

6. Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.

7. Tepid souls shall grow fervent.

8. Fervent souls shall quickly grow to high perfection.

9. I will bless every place in which a picture of My Heart shall be exposed and

honored.

10. I will give to Priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.

11. Those who promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart,

never to be blotted out.

12. I promise in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will

grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on First Friday in nine

consecutive months the grace of final repentance; they shall not die in My

displeasure nor without receiving the Sacraments; My Divine Heart shall

be their safe refuge in this last moment.

dear Padre Why do Peter and Paul share a feast day?

This week is the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. Why doesn’t each have his own feast day?

Actually, they do. Saints Peter and Paul are united in a solemnity on June 29th to honor their martyrdom, but each has his own feast: the Chair of Saint Peter (February 22nd) and the Conversion of Saint Paul (January 25th).

St. Peter’s primacy is evident in the prominence given to him in the Gospel and in the position of authority entrusted to him by Jesus and the infant Church. Jesus promised Peter that he alone would be the Foundation Stone, Keeper of the Keys, and Head Shepherd of His Church (see the Gospel of Matthew 16:18-19 and John 21:15-17), and Peter also oversaw Judas Iscariot’s replacement (see Acts of the Apostles 1:15-26).

St. Paul holds a position of honor for his transformation from Church persecutor to “a slave of Christ Jesus” (Romans 1:1).

Saint Augustine wrote that they share a solemnity because even though they didn’t suffer on the same day, they suffered as one. On different days of presumably the same year, 67AD, Peter was crucified and Paul beheaded.

Their esteem coupled them in the early Church’s devotion. Hence, the Preface of the Mass of the Solemnity states that “each in a different way gathered together the one family of Christ; and revered together throughout the world, they share one Martyr’s crown.”
