“From the beginning, Jesus associated his disciples with his own life, revealed the mystery of the Kingdom to them, and gave them a share in his mission, joy, and sufferings” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 787).

During these midsummer days, taking a break and relaxing becomes a more and more attractive idea. Even Jesus, it seems, wants to give to us rest from our labors and burdens. Gathering today at God’s invitation in the middle of the summer, let us take the time to

learn of God’s great love as revealed to us in Jesus Christ, God’s Son.

In Jesus’ time, plow animals always worked in pairs. The yokes they used were specifically fitted to each animal to ease their burden so the they could work together more easily and share the load. So, when Jesus says to take up his yoke, he offers to share our burdens,

and to help carry our load as a partner on the journey from this Guard –

“…a pastoral council is to be established in each parish, over which the pastor presides and in which the Christian faithful, together with those who share in pastoral care by virtue of their office in the parish, assist in fostering pastoral activity…A pastoral council

possesses a consultative vote only and is governed by the norms established by the diocesan bishop.” (Code of Canon Law, can. 536, §1 & §2).

The beginning of a new fiscal year brings about changes in parish councils such as our Trustees and Advisory Board. As new Trustees, I welcome Monica Lennie and Austin McBride who will serve as Trustees for a term for five-year terms. I thank our outgoing Trustees, Loretta Gragnani and Mike Santo for their service to the parish in general and for their guidance and suggestions when I first arrived in

the parish a year ago.

As for the Advisory Board, I welcome new members Michael Arcaro, Geri Catala, and Sheryl Granet as they begin their three-year commitment to the Board. On behalf of the parish I extend heartfelt thanks to the outgoing Board members, Kathy Del Guercio,

Michele Hughes, and Ron Prosperi for their years of service to the parish.

I look forward to working with our new Trustees and Advisory Board members as we plan for the future while maintaining our mission to “proclaim joyfully the presence of Jesus to the whole comm.

The Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Only faith can embrace the mysterious ways of God’s almighty power. This faith glories in its weakness in order to draw to itself Christ’s power.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 273).

For the past few Sundays, we heard Jesus defining discipleship for us. Today our attention is drawn to the focus of our work as disciples, the Kingdom of Heaven. For the next two Sundays, we hear parables about what the Kingdom of Heaven is like, but it will not always be easy for us to grasp the meaning of these parables. In today’s Gospel, we see that our merciful God allows plenty of time for the weeds and wheat to grow together, so that the wheat is not pulled up accidentally. Perhaps our prayer today can be for clarity and understanding, so that we will be able to discern what God wants for us.

Maintenance Matters – Church Doorstops and Parish Tool Shed

Last Saturday, July 15th, we experienced a busy Saturday here at St. Ann Church. We started the day with a Men’s Group meeting in the Holy Spirit Room. Following the meeting, members of the Snowmen Ministry replaced the old doorstops on the twelve front doors of the church with new doorstops. These new stops have foot levers so we can raise the stops with a tap of a toe instead of bending down. Meanwhile, members of Girl Scouts Troop 95735 from All Saints Academy took on the task of painting our parish tool/storage shed which was in dire need of fresh paint. Assisted by a few parents, the girls did a magnificent job restoring the shed. I know I thanked the Snowmen and the Girl Scouts at the Masses last weekend, but I feel that a written “Thanks” is in order. I appreciate that people are willing to give up some time on a summer Saturday to beautify parish facilities.

Summer Vacation – July 28th through August 3rd

I will be away from the parish for my annual summer vacation, leaving on Friday, July 28th, and returning on Thursday, August 3rd. This is the only trip during the year when I am away for a period of time that includes a weekend. Brother priests will fill in for me, so our Mass schedule remains the same. This year’s adventure takes me to North Dakota and South Dakota as part of my “Visit All 50 States” bucket list initiative. I fly from Newark to Chicago to Rapid City, South Dakota, driving straight to Bismarck, North Dakota. After three nights in North Dakota, plans call for three nights in South Dakota. My primary objective is to visit Mount Rushmore. Following this trip, the remaining states to visit are: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Alaska. As for my own Mass attendance, I shall rely on the masstimes.org app to locate local churches.

Peace, Fr. David

Sacred Summertime: The Splendors of Creation

Camping in the wilderness of a National Park, or just walking in the “wilderness” of your backyard? The long, hazy days of summer are an ideal time to look for and appreciate the glories of God’s creation.

The pace of life is a little slower, and we find ourselves taking pleasure in simple things: warm sunlight or cool breeze on your face, a cold glass of lemonade, resting in the shade of a tree, or enjoying a dip in a lake or a pool. In these simple pleasures, we find an invitation from God to discover him through the beauty of the created world.

Where do you find God in creation? What are some ways you and your family can “read” the book of creation? What are everyday sacred moments you experience? Here are some ideas to help sharpen your spiritual vision:

Ø Go for long walks, hikes and bike rides as a family, talk about what you see, smell, hear and feel (read Sir 17:1-23d). Ø Take a Rosary Walk, or recite the Divine Mercy Chaplet or your evening prayers under the stars. Ø Make a special garden with your children for which they can be responsible, perhaps planting wildflowers to attract

honeybees or butterflies (read Ps 19:1-8b). Ø Take a rain walk (not during thunderstorms) to reflect and discuss on the importance of “gloomy” days for nature

and how things look different (read Is 55:10-11). Ø Read and discuss parts of Pope Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home”

and/or from the book of Genesis chapter 1, and chapter 2 verses 1-7.
