President’s Message
Happy Fall! Ok, it’s still not quite Fall but it is getting close and we are getting ready to kickoff our 2017-2018 year! And while the beginning of our year (the September meeting) is still about a week away, many HQU members have already been hard at work this summer. We have been wrapping up the wonderful year we just finished and getting ready for this coming year. It is hard to follow such a great team, but we will do our best to keep the momentum and great activities going strong. The HQU Board and incoming leads have filled all our team lead positions and met to develop the proposed budget. We have also been working on retreats and commu-nity service ideas and preparation. Our programs and workshops are all set. So, let the year begin! Have you been busy this summer? Hopefully you have had time to make your Sum-mer Challenge Mug Rug. You still can make one before the meeting. It will be fun to see what everyone came up with! And are you getting your UFO list together? I keep wondering how I manage to have such a long list when I know I am finishing things! What are your goals for the quilting year? I hope one of them is to make at least one Community Service project. We are working on making it easier to participate and pick a project that appeals to you. And if you start it just a little, then you can add it to your UFO list! I am excited about the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) project we are rolling out where members can make quilts for teenagers who could use a little extra love and caring. What a great cause! We will talk more about that at the September meeting. So, as you can tell, there is lots going on and more to come during the year. With all the plans we have and the amazing members in HQU, I know we will have a great time. See you in September! Take care, Sue
Editor’s Corner Quilters, Sewists, Friends,
I am so excited about this position as the Newsletter Editor. I want to take this opportunity to
refresh and change up the newsletter. I would like to try something new and have one page
dedicated to featuring our members’ work each month. Not all members are able to make
every meeting or stay to see show and tell. I encourage ANYONE interested in sharing your
work to send me a picture with a short caption (the quilt name and your name) to my email
[email protected] . I really hope everyone will consider sharing their beautiful work. I’d love to
hear any and all suggestions or comments, feel free to email me at [email protected]
Happy Sewing! Your Editor, Emily Lockhart

Please be aware that sometimes
people will send you emails pretend-
ing to be someone they are not,

had a number of issues across big QU

see an email that looks odd or asks
for money and you're not sure what

Vice President’s Message
It’s very exciting getting ready to begin a new year of meetings and learn how to be
helpful in this new role. I am so lucky to be following Linda Bowlin in this position;
she has given me such great information to get the year started. I am going to keep
this short and sweet and give my notes in bullet point style. If anyone needs more
details or has questions, I can be reached at [email protected]
- Our membership in the Prince William County Arts Council has been renewed for
the year; this allows us to get a greatly reduced rate for renting the space at Alvey
Our meeting dates (first Thursdays of each month Sept. – Jun.) have all been entered
into the calendar through the PWCAC and Alvey has approved and confirmed them
(Yay!!)
- Table Space….I will be working with members, committee chairs, and anyone else
who needs table space at the monthly business meetings. If you are planning on
setting up at a table during our Early Bird and/or meeting time, please let me know
one week prior to our meeting. Space will be reserved for you with a request only.
NO REQUEST……NO TABLE SPACE. Membership, Early Bird, Free Table, and Programs
have a standing request-no contact needed.
- Signs on Tables! There will be signs on the back tables and those along the far side
of the room. Please use the table for your committee that has your corresponding
sign; easy to see and easy to find.
- Social Media and HQU: Ladies we are going to bring our guild and amazing work
into the digital world. There is so much fun and excitement waiting not only on Face-
book, but on Instagram as well. I will speak at the September meeting about this, so
bring your Smart Phones and let’s join the fun. #HaymarketQuiltersUnlimited
Thanks for always inspiring me and for giving me this great opportunity.
- Kathi Cappellini

Editorial: Honoring Our Military Service Members
There is a new “Boutique Bee” that is being formed to work on items
that will be donated to the HQU Boutique at the Quilt Show in the
spring of 2018. We will be meeting at the Piedmont Country Club on
the third Thursday of each month beginning in September from 10:00
am till 4:00 pm. Please join us on September 21st as we kick off this
new Bee. Any questions please contact Susan Arbogast at 703-981-
3589.
“Today, August 19, I had the distinctive honor of presenting two of our
quilts to Service Members nominated by Nancy Seymour. Both were
so appreciative and expressed curiosity about the entire quilting pro-
cess. As I was getting ready to leave, one of the recipients came up to
me with something I'd like to share with you. He said that he is look-
ing forward to sharing the story of the quilt with his fellow Service
Members and that, while it is difficult for them to be away from family
and loved ones for extended periods of time, knowing that there are
people like our group of quilters who are spending time and effort for
them means so much more than even the quilt itself.
Thank you, HQU, from me, for the opportunity to be a part of such a
humbling experience.” -Liz Sampson

HQU Workshops
Boutique Bee
HQU has nine exciting workshops planned for the 2017-2018 program
year -- learning new techniques, refining techniques you already know,
making interesting quilts from patterns. Weaving fabric, dying fabric,
serging, English paper piecing, beading, weaving fabric, and more! For
your convenience, the entire packet is attached to this news-
letter. Download and keep for future reference. If you have other
questions, contact Beverly Fine ([email protected]) or Bonnie An-
derson ([email protected])
CHECK OUT PAGE 8 for the ENTIRE HQU CALENDAR
We're looking forward to a road trip to
Berkeley Springs, WV to learn "Fun
Ways to Color Fabric" from Jane Fren-
ke. We will be dye printing, stamping,
over-stamping, and discharging. The
workshop is filled. Contact Mary Anne
Sykes ([email protected]) to get
your name on the wait list. Details are
in the attached flyer. If you have other
questions, contact Beverly Fine
([email protected]) or Bonnie
Anderson ([email protected])
Ready to make a dent in the pile of unfinished projects you have?
Want to do that AND possibly win some money?
Then the UFO Challenge is for YOU!
Here is what you need to do . . .
Go through your sewing room, closets, bins and
bags and find ALL the unfinished projects you
have.
Decide which ones you want to try and finish
by June 2018. Be bold and put as many as you
want on your list.
You will need to turn in $1 for each UFO you
submit. You don’t have to submit any and you
don’t have to submit all your UFO’s. If you put
10 UFO’s on your list, you pay $10 (must do this
at the November meeting).
Each completed UFO (by the June meeting) will
give you a chance to win. So if you had 10 on
your list (and paid $10) and then finished 5,
your name would go in the drawing 5 times.
The more you finish from your list, the more chances you get to win!

Community Service
Our Community Service Bee has
been working on making it easier
for members to use some of the
Community Service stash and
decide what projects they are
interested in making. We will be
rolling out information at the
September meeting and up-
dating our webpage with new
content designed to help you
pick a project. And we will talk
more during the meeting about
all the options available. There
are so many great ways to give
back by doing what we love –
making quilts. So be sure and
stop by the Community Service
table before the meeting and
check out the kits and Bee Crea-
tive bags. You can take one (or
more) of these home with you
and get started right away.
Thank you to all who will show their quilts at the Haymarket Museum Quilt
show. If you haven't done yet, please remember to send me your form as soon
as possible. We still need volunteers to work at the museum!! Please send me 3
choices of time slots that will work for you. I will do my best to coordinate all
volunteers. Since we are expecting many more visitors on Haymarket Day right
after the parade, we added more shifts but shortened the time. See below for a
list of times.

Mystery Quilt
Did you do last year’s Mystery Quilt? It was great- we all loved how it turned out. Well, Doreen Johnson
has designed another mystery quilt for us this year. I can’t wait for it!
If you have never done one (or you have and didn’t love it)- you will LOVE this one! It is a fun project
that works well with a wide range of fabric types- batiks, brights, traditional, reproduction- you name it,
it works….
Beginning this month and running through April, there will be a monthly step published in the news-
letter. You don’t know what the quilt will look like until the last month! You can work along each month
(the most fun way to do it), or do it later if you don’t have time each month. At the May and June
meetings, people bring in their finished tops (or quilts if you are really ambitious) and share them with
the group. It is lots of fun to see how the Mystery turns out.
The first step starts this month, so check it out on page 12 We are also putting each step as an attach-
ment in the newsletter email if that is easier for you to print out. If you have any questions, Contact Sue
Heisler, [email protected].

Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and take on another Scrap Happy Challenge?
Our 2017-2018 Mystery Quilt is called Scrap Happy 2 and finishes at 60" x 60".
This year's approach on fabrics is a little bit different so please pay attention to your options. And YES, you can still use up fabrics you have on hand.
The assignment for our first month is to gather up your fabrics. (sometimes that's the hardest part). This time
around I'm going to share with you up front, the actual fabrics that I'm using to create my own Scrap Hap-py 2 mystery quilt. And I'm also going to share with you exactly how I am cutting up my fabrics.
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS: Background - I recommend 3 yards in total. This will give you nearly 1/4 yard of extra fabric. Your background fab-ric can be a scrappy mix of fabric if you like - but should all pretty much read the same. For example, white on whites, small shirtings, white with various newsprint, gray backgrounds with small prints etc. I am using a solid white fabric for my background fabric. Prints or Main fabrics - Here is where you need to be mindful of your choices....You can use: 1 Layer Cake of fab-rics (you'll have 1/3 of the squares left over to enlarge your quilt or use for another project) OR ….. 15 Fat Quar-ters ….. OR ….. 4¾ yards of asst prints. Please note: when considering your scrap fabrics… to successfully finish one of the quilt components you will need 12 fabrics that EACH yield (2) 5" squares, (2) 3 ¾” squares, (1) 3 and 3/8” square. I am using a Layer Cake of fab-rics – Kate Spain “Canyon” by Moda. Contrast Fabric - 1/2 yard of fabric in total I recommend using a solid fabric, or batik or tonal print that reads as a solid. This fabric can be dark, bright or pastel but should either compliment or contrast against all your other print fabrics. You can use just ONE fabric or you can use a variety. 12 sets of (4) 3” squares are needed in total. I’ve pulled out 6 pastel solids, I might use all or just a few of these. Binding: if you wish to think ahead about binding - you will need 1/2 yard of fabric to finish this at 60" x 60". Pictured Below: My fabrics laid out for this Mystery Quilt.
