Men’s Basketball Season Preview

There is no truth to the rumor that Stetson men’s basketball head coach Corey Williams asked his team to wear name tags to the first practice of the season . But one could hardly blame him if he had . The Hatters welcome eight new players to the roster this season, including seven scholarship freshmen . There are actually nine eligible first-year Hatters on the roster if you count sophomore Cameron Harvey, who sat out last season under NCAA rules after transferring from Eastern Illinois . “I know these guys are young, but I want to see how quick they can learn the information we give to them and give it back to us,” said Williams . “When you’re dealing with young players, there are a lot of mistakes that will be made, and they’ll continue to make them, but hopefully by the time we start playing games we will have refined them a lot more and they’ll be more complete basketball players .” While much of the emphasis throughout the season will be on Stetson’s significant youth, the Hatters return a strong nucleus of veterans . Seniors Kentwan Smith and

Kyle Sikora, along with sophomores B .J . Glasford and Brian Pegg, form a strong core of leadership and veteran presence for Williams and the Hatters . “Kentwan and Brian – along with Kyle Sikora -- are the catalysts for our team,” said Williams . “They are the guys who are going to make sure we are doing what we are supposed to be doing . There’s a lot of pressure and a lot of weight on their shoulders, but they have big shoulders, and they can carry that load .” Smith is Stetson’s leading returning scorer at 9 .4 points per game . The 6-8 forward ranked second on the squad last season with 5 .1 rebounds . With the loss of Willie Green to graduation, Smith will slide over one spot and serve as Stetson’s power forward this season . Pegg served in somewhat of a utility role for the Hatters last season, filling in where needed along the front line . And he was rewarded for his efforts with a spot on the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman team . He averaged 8 .3 points and a team-leading 6 .3 rebounds per game as a rookie . continued on Page 5

Glasford and Sikora also provide the Hatters with depth, versatility and experience . Sikora averaged 2 .4 points and 2 .5 rebounds last year while shooting nearly 60 percent from the field. Glasford, who can play both guard positions and small forward, appeared in all 31 games as a freshman and averaged 3 .4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. He finished the season strong, scoring 24 points in his final two contests. The list of freshmen is a long one, and each will impact the 2014-15 Hatters in his own way . Point guards Divine Myles and Angel Rivera give the Hatters what Williams believes will be a strong tandem for years to come . Two guards Grant Lozoya and Corey Mendez offer the Hatters a combination of outstanding shooting ability and

athleticism . Forward Jonathan Joseph is perhaps the Hatters’ best athlete, and his basketball skills are developing faster than anticipated . Wyatt Sikora – Kyle’s brother – gives the Hatters a European-style big man, a 6-11 shooter who also has skills down on the block . Kevin Ndahiro is a post player in the more traditional sense . He likes to bang in the paint, grab rebounds and block shots . “My expectations are for us to play hard every night and give ourselves a chance to win every game,” said Williams . “We have to play together as a unit . Everybody has to play their role . If we put ourselves in position to win basketball games, in the end we’ll be right where we need to be .” The regular season opens on Nov . 14 when the Hatters host Edward Waters at 8 p .m . in the Edmunds Center .

Women’s Basketball Season Preview

continued on Page 9

Throughout the past four seasons, the Stetson women’s basketball team has established itself as a powerhouse in the Atlantic Sun Conference . The Hatters have posted four straight 20+ win seasons, two conference championships, and four postseason appearances, including two in the NCAA tournament . The team has raised the bar year-after-year, breaking the school record for victories in each of the past three seasons, including a 27-win season last year . Stetson’s 2014-15 squad will feature seven returners, including a veteran corps of four seniors. Added to the mix are five newcomers, who have all hit the ground running during fall practice . “We have had a great preseason,” Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said . “In all my years of coaching, I don’t think I have ever had a team play so hard . They really get after it . We are a bit sloppy right now, but I think that is expected this early, that you are going to be a little bit sloppy . But I love our effort . I love our progress at this time .”

The senior class of Cherisse Burris, C .J . Coddington, Myeisha Hall and Jama Sharp have combined for 330 games of experience in the Stetson program . “When you recruit them and they are in your program and running your system for four years, it makes a big difference,” Bria said about the seniors . “They all play at a high level . They really help you a lot with the other players . You can’t say enough about playing together . The only way you do that is with time and reps . These (seniors) have had a lot of time, and a lot of reps together .” Jama Sharp flourished as the team’s point guard last season, averaging 11 .7 points, 5 .2 assists, and 2 .4 steals per game en route to first team all-conference honors . She helped quarterback an offense that averaged nearly 80 points per game and ranked 19th in the nation in the scoring . Sharp says she expects this year’s team to be as good if not better offensively . “We don’t like to be boring,” Sharp said .

“We don’t like to walk the ball up the court . We want to push the ball, even if people press us, and get as many points as we can . The team that scores the most wins . We just want to score and be an exciting team to watch .” Another player who may have a big impact on both ends of the court is 6-foot-3 sophomore Amber Porter . Offensively, Porter averaged 13 .8 points per game and shot 54.8 percent from the floor. She also earned first team all-conference honors and was named the league’s Freshman of the Year . Porter was a huge force defensively as well, blocking a school-record 129 shots on the season . That also marked the second-highest total in conference history and the fifth-highest total by a freshman in NCAA history . “She is 6-3, and she runs the floor,” Bria said . “She is effective on both ends .

Offensively, she can post-up with her back to the basket and score . Defensively, if she is not blocking the shot, she is altering the shot of our opponents . She has gotten a lot stronger (since last year), and she is much improved .” Three of Stetson’s five newcomers will be eligible to compete in 2014-15, including Austria native Sarah Sagerer . The 6-foot-3 wing player will add a new dimension to the Hatters’ offense . “Her versatility is unbelievable,” Bria said . “She can go inside, she can go outside, she can shoot the 3, she is big, and she can handle the ball . I think she is going to help us on both ends of the floor.” Bria says the Hatters will be successful this year if the team can stick together through adversity . Stetson will be seeking its third conference title in a five-year span, and the season gets started at home on Nov . 14 against Bethune-Cookman .Season Tickets start at just $75. Payne Named Student-Athlete of the Month

Even if you are not a die-hard Hatter football fan, odds are you have heard the name Donald Payne . One of four team captains for 2014, Payne returns as the 2013 Pioneer Football League Defensive Freshman of the Year and a first team All-Conference selection . He also received national recognition as a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award, which goes to the national Freshman of the Year . What you may not know about Donald, however, is that he is just as successful off the field. As a Finance major, he currently holds a 3 .58 in the School of Business and a 3 .409 cumulative GPA . “I was drawn to Finance because I love numbers,” said Payne . “I’m an organized person, and this has helped me both in football and in my studies . I would like to be a financial manager one day, so my job would essentially be reading numbers and helping others interpret what they mean .” Dr . Luis Paris, assistant professor in the Department of International Business, described Donald as a reserved but natural leader .

“Donald is quiet, but after seeing his work, I knew I had someone special,” said Paris . “His performance spoke for itself . When he did speak, [his classmates] paid attention to what he said .” Dr . Bonnie Holloway, a visiting lecturer in the Department of Accounting, identified the natural link between finance and football . “The discipline required in athletics absolutely carries over to classwork,” Holloway said . “Athletes understand that to get better at something, you have to practice it . They understand what it means to put in the work .” Head football coach Roger Hughes noted that Donald, like many football players, has pleasantly surprised the Stetson faculty . “[Donald] is the epitome of what we look for,” Hughes said. “The person that fits well here has to be someone blessed with two gifts . They have to want to be challenged both as a student and as an athlete .” Thus, Payne is named the Stetson Student-Athlete of the Month for October .

Men’s Soccer Looks To Finish Strong

As the Stetson men’s soccer team reaches the home stretch of the 2014 season, first-year head coach Ernie Yarborough has the Hatters playing their best soccer in years . With two regular-season games remaining, the Hatters owned a 7-5-2 overall record and sat in first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 4-1-0 mark . A revitalized offense is leading the way . Stetson leads the A-Sun and ranks 10th nationally with 30 goals, more than double the two previous seasons combined . Senior JJ Bostic is tied for the A-Sun lead with seven goals, while juniors Lucas Diniz and Eli Beates and freshman Jared Huber have scored five goals apiece. “One of the things we talked about when I arrived was being able to compete in every match,” said Yarborough . “We’ve spent a lot of time talking about being a team that is difficult to play against, and certainly being in every match and having the opportunity to win the game . There’s been a very good buy-in to the way things should be done .”

Stetson is looking for its first winning season since 2011 and has already clinched its first A-Sun Tournament appearance since that same season . Stetson still has an outside chance to win the conference regular-season title as its only conference loss was a 1-0 setback in the double overtime at Florida Gulf Coast . The Hatters began to roll when the offense clicked. In a five-game span from Sept . 27 to Oct . 18, the Hatters scored 17 goals, including 11 in back-to-back home wins over North Florida (6-0) and Georgia Southern (5-2) . “We are a team that works extremely hard, a team that stays pretty well connected to find a way to stop the other team,” said Yarborough . “And when the opportunities come, we’ve been able to take care of those chances and score some goals .” The A-Sun Tournament begins on Nov . 12. The semifinals and championship will be played on Nov . 14 and 16 at the site of the No . 1 seed .

Volleyball Heads Down the Stretch

With just a few weeks remaining in the 2014 volleyball season, the Hatters are looking to wrap up a spot in the Atlantic Sun Championship for the second year in a row . This year’s championship will be hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida, Nov . 20-22 . The champion will earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament . Here is a quick late-season recap: Stetson’s school-record 5-1 start included a second-place finish at the FAU Invitational and a first-place finish at The Citadel Invitational . After dropping the next four matches, Stetson outlasted UT-Martin in a grueling five-set victory, which began a three-game winning streak heading into conference play . The Atlantic Sun season began with a loss at FGCU, but the Hatters took off from there, winning five straight league matches to vault into a tie for second place in the standings . Included in that stretch was a come-from-behind 3-2 victory at USC Upstate, marking Stetson’s fourth fifth-set win of the year.

“I feel like we are very comfortable in fifth sets, so hopefully that is something we can keep in our pocket as we continue through the rest of conference,” Stetson head coach Kristina Hernandez said . “That will be a very good confidence booster for us if we know we are really good in fifth sets.” Sophomore Madison Akins and redshirt freshman McKenna Foster have helped lead the offense as each averages over 3 .0 kills-per-set . Foster earned the league’s Player of the Week honors on Oct . 6, and she has twice earned the league’s Freshman of the Week award . Junior setter Kayla Weller runs the offense for the Hatters . She ranks third in the league in assists-per-set and has surpassed 2,500 assists for her career . Middle blockers Shelby Connors and Erika White have helped solidify Stetson’s front-row defense . Junior Alexa Drost anchors the back row with an average of nearly 4 .0 digs-per-set . The Hatters have already posted their third-highest win total in the past 18 years .

Seven Inductees To Athletics Hall of Fame

The Stetson University Athletics Hall of Fame will grow by seven on Friday, Nov . 7, as the newest members take their place as Class of 2014 . The group will include four former student-athletes – two each from the sports of baseball and softball – one current head coach and two very special gentlemen who are being recognized for their many contributions to Stetson Athletics, and the entire DeLand community . “This Hall of Fame class represents the very best of what Stetson University, and Stetson Athletics, is all about,” Director of Athletics Jeff Altier said . “To have four highly decorated and successful student-athletes, one of the most successful sport coaches in school history and two of the finest gentlemen I have ever known, whose contributions to the university, its athletic programs and to the community in general go far beyond wins and losses, makes this a very special class .”

The Class of 2014 includes two former student athletes – Melissa Wiggins Mangino (softball) and Chris Johnson (baseball) – who were elected to the Hall of Fame in 2012 but were unable to attend the induction ceremony . The five newest members of the Hall are Erica Demers Crews (softball), Corey Kluber (baseball), coach Frank Griffin (softball), as well as the late Dick Westervelt and Roger Gilmore as special contributors . The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Nov . 7 at 5 p .m . at the new Wayne G . Sanborn Activity Center at 815 S . Alabama Ave . In addition to the dinner and induction ceremony, the Hall of Fame Class of 2014 will be honored at halftime of the Stetson football game against Marist on Saturday, Nov . 8 .

Dedication If you’re looking for a wealth manager who is as dedicated to achieving your goals

as you are, it’s time we talked.

There is a lot of misinformation related

to wealth management. That is why it is important to ask yourself questions like:

"Are we on track to achieve our goals, or could we run out of money during re-tirement?”

Has my success created a "ceiling of

complexity" and lack of time to ad-

life?

Do I have a coordinated strategy for

my investments, tax issues, asset

protection and estate planning ?

Sometimes people just don’t know what

they don’t know about their own goals and what it’s really going to take to achieve them. Give us a call, and we will put our knowledge and dedication to work for you.

Wilkes To Enter Collegiate Hall of Fame

Already a member of the Stetson University Sports Hall of Fame, legendary men’s basketball coach Glenn Wilkes will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in November . Wilkes roamed the Stetson sidelines for 36 years, leading the Hatters to an unparalleled era of success . During his 36-year coaching career, which came entirely at Stetson, Wilkes won 552 games and achieved 27 winning seasons . Joining Wilkes in the Class of 2014 are Grant Hill, Darrell Griffith, Shaquille O’Neal, Zelmo Beaty, Dale Brown, Gary Williams and Howard Garfinkel. The group will be inducted Sunday, Nov . 23, in Kansas City, Missouri ., as part of a three-day celebration of college basketball . The Wilkes era began in DeLand during the 1957-58 season and ran consecutively through the 1992-93 campaign . He led the Hatters to a school-record 22-win season first in 1969-70 and then again in 1974-75. Wilkes also took Stetson basketball from the NAIA ranks to the NCAA Division I level .

In addition to his accomplishments on the court, Wilkes served the basketball community by sponsoring the first coaching clinic in the South, the first basketball clinic for boys, the first basketball clinic for girls, and the first officials’ clinic. He is also the author of seven basketball-related books, including Fundamentals of Basketball Coaching and Basketball’s 3-Point Shot . Wilkes’ experience and expertise were not just coveted at the collegiate level, as from 1994 to 1998, he worked as an advance scout for the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers . The longtime Hatter head coach is also a member of the Florida and Central Florida Sports Hall of Fame and in 2000 was given the Central Florida Amateur Athlete Lifetime Achievement Award . The National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame is located in the College Basketball Experience, next to the Sprint Center in Kansas City. In 2006, the first class was inducted into the newly formed Hall of Fame . That class included the game’s inventor, James Naismith, and possibly its greatest coach in John Wooden .
