Volleyball Primed For Another Strong Year

A dramatic and at times heart-stopping 2013 season saw the Stetson volleyball team win 18 games and advance to postseason play for the first time since 1995 . With a strong corps returning and several talented newcomers joining the program, the Hatters are primed to contend for an A-Sun Championship in 2014 . First-year head coach Kristina Hernandez says preseason practice has proceeded exceptionally well . “I have been real excited about the team and how much energy we have had,” Hernandez said . “They have been real receptive to learning because it is new for everyone . We have a new coaching staff, several new players, and it is just new having to learn what we want to do offensively and defensively .” Senior middle hitters Erika White and Morgan Pautsch will look to lead a relatively young squad through a schedule that features four road tournaments in the first four weeks of the season. The Hatters will get their first opportunity to play in front of their home crowd on Sept . 24 against Bethune-Cookman .

Junior setter Kayla Weller returns to help direct the offense . The Marietta, Ga ., native set a school record last season with 1,269 assists . She also led the team with 39 aces . Junior libero Michelle Kastner will help anchor the back row . Kastner led the team with 421 digs a season ago, which included four matches with over 20 digs . Sophomore Tiffany Creamer earned Atlantic Sun preseason all-conference honors after averaging 2 .89 kills and 1 .31 digs per set from her outside hitter position last season . Fellow sophomore Madison Akins averaged 1 .72 kills per set from the right side . “Our serving is consistently aggressive, which is exciting because it is a trait that I like my teams to have,” Hernandez said . “They are also starting to click offensively and doing some really fast things . I think they were a strong defensive group last year, and you can tell that right now from the competitive rallies we have been having in practice .” The Hatters open the season Aug . 29 at the FAU Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla .

Ernie Yarborough Leads Men’s Soccer

Florida native and three-time national champion Ernie Yarborough was named men’s soccer coach at Stetson University on July 31 . He replaces the late T . Logan Fleck as head coach at Stetson . Fleck passed away in late July . “Coach Yarborough came to our attention from multiple recommendations, including several Stetson alums,” Stetson Director of Athletics Jeff Altier said . “The search committee members, along with these former Hatters players, were extremely impressed with Coach Yarborough’s experience, work ethic, organization, integrity and commitment to the development of student-athletes .” Yarborough comes to Stetson after spending the past four seasons at national power Indiana . “It is with great excitement and a heavy heart that I accept the position of head men’s soccer coach at Stetson University,” Yarborough said . “While I’m truly excited for this opportunity, I want to first pay my respects to the late coach Fleck and all he has done, not only for Stetson University, but also for all of college soccer .

“I’d also like to thank Stetson University President Dr . Wendy Libby, Athletic Director Jeff Altier and Associate Athletic Director Alicia Queally for providing me with the opportunity and confidence to guide Stetson men’s soccer going forward . It has been a dream of mine for some time to lead a Division I program, and I look forward to using my depth of knowledge and skill to help take Stetson to new heights both on the field and in the classroom .” Yarborough has served as an assistant coach at his alma mater since 2009 . His other stops over more than 17 years as a collegiate coach have included the University of Wisconsin, the University of Michigan and UAB . Yarborough, who played at Indiana University for legendary coach Jerry Yeagley from 1991 to 1995, helped the Hoosiers to four Big Ten titles and made two Final Four appearances as a goalkeeper . He played professionally for one year before launching full time into his coaching career .

Women’s Soccer Looks to Move Up in 2014

The first season with a new program is always a learning experience for a head coach, even a veteran one like Manoj Khettry . And the Hatters and Khettry learned quickly, exceeding preseason expectations by finishing fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference and reaching the conference tournament for the first time in three seasons in 2013 . While year two should be a little easier for Khettry and the Hatters from a familiarity standpoint, the 2014 season won’t be without its challenges . The Hatters face a grueling nonconference schedule, while at the same time welcoming 14 freshmen into the program . Khettry says it’s all part of his plan to turn Stetson women’s soccer into a consistently strong program . “I think putting your stamp on a program takes time,” he said . “I think it takes 3-5 years to do it effectively . We are now in year two . It’s exciting, but I’m sure we will continue to have growing pains . The most important thing for us as we move forward is to make sure that we keep our focus

on what our long-term goals are while still getting after it in the short term .” Considering they were picked ninth in the preseason poll, the Hatters enjoyed a successful year in 2013 . The six total victories were the most in three seasons, while Stetson’s four conference wins tied for the most in four years . Needless to say, the expectations for this season are higher . “We want to continue to move up the standings in conference play,” said Khettry . “We finished fifth last year. Had we finished fourth, we would have hosted a conference tournament game, so one of our goals for this year is to finish in the top four. We have a much tougher nonconference schedule this year, so we’re going to have to manage expectations due to how tough that portion of our schedule is .” This season, Stetson faces non-conference challenges against the likes of Miami (Fla .), Florida State, Navy, Minnesota and Florida Atlantic, among others .

Busy Fall on Tap for Cross Country

The Stetson University men’s and women’s cross country teams might feel like they are running from one meet to the next during the upcoming fall campaign . With seven events in the first seven weeks of the season and eight meets overall, the Hatters will have plenty of opportunity to showcase their fleet-of-foot skills in 2014. To begin the season, Stetson will host the Hatter Invitational Aug . 30 at River City Nature Park in DeBary . The women will run a 5K at 7:30 am, while the men will run an 8K at 8 am . The Hatters will then compete at the UNF Invitational in Jacksonville on Sept . 6 . The following week, Stetson will participate in the UCF Invitational in Orlando . On Sept . 20, the Hatters will head to Gainesville to run at the Mountain Dew Invitational hosted by the University of Florida . The second half of the season will begin in Daytona Beach at the Embry-Riddle Invitational on Sept . 27 . The annual FLRunners .com meet will take place on Oct . 3 in Titusville, and the FSU Invitational will be held Oct . 10 in Tallahassee .

Finally, after a couple of weeks off, the Hatters will return to River City Nature Park in DeBary for the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship . Sophomore Amanda Spring led the Hatter women in last year’s championship, completing the 5K course in 19:43 . Meanwhile, sophomore Joe Beery led the Hatter men through the 8K course in a time of 27:56 . Head coach Joe Matuszczak returns for his fourth season .

Tentler Looking For Improvement in 2014

It seems like a random number – 252 . But there is nothing random about it . It is a number the Stetson football players have had on their minds since July 22 . That was the day USA Today released the preseason Sagarin Computer rankings for 2014 . There are 252 teams in Division I (FBS and FCS) . That was the number next to the name Stetson at the bottom of the ranking . For sophomore quarterback Ryan Tentler and the rest of the returning Hatters, coming off a disappointing 2-9 inaugural campaign, the number 252 hit them squarely between the eyes . “Right now, the only thing we are thinking is 252,” Tentler said less than two

weeks before the Hatters open the 2014 season . “That is our ranking going into the season . That is last in Division I . Behind Davidson even though we beat them .” Tentler, who is the unquestioned leader of the Hatters, said the ranking was a shock, but it shouldn’t have come as a surprise . “We weren’t surprised because of the way the season ended up, but it was a reality check,” Tentler said . “We thought we were better than what we were . Now, everyone on the team knows what the rest of the world thinks of us . It was a blow to our pride .” Tentler carried the bulk of the offensive load last year, passing for 1,774 yards and

12 touchdowns while running for 375 yards and three scores . He expects to see that load spread more in 2014, and he expects the Hatters to be more productive . “We have to do a lot better job, even if we aren’t scoring,” Tentler said of the offense . “The reason the defense got hurt sometimes was that they were just so tired because they were on the field all the time .” Doing that means being more efficient in the passing game and more effective on the ground . Tentler expects that having a healthy cast of receivers as well as bruising backs and an improved offensive line will lead to better production .

Tentler also said he has grown as a leader, something that should help . “I had to take a different role from last year . Last year, I was just a guy who just yelled at everyone . Now I am picking everyone up because we need them all working together .” He noticed a difference the very first day of camp . “Our maturity is a lot higher,” Tentler said . “We are not acting like we are better than everyone else . Last year, we kind of acted like we deserved something . Now we know we have to take anything we get .” The first opportunity to take control of the season is on Aug . 30 .

5 Questions With ... Nolan Behrns

Hatters Extra: What are some of your game day responsibilities?Nolan Behrns: On the day of a home game, I make sure we have our pre-game and postgame meals organized, that our transportation to and from Spec Martin Stadium is reserved and on time, and I organize our unofficial recruiting visits with prospective student-athletes that we have attending the game . In addition, I coordinate all the visiting alumni (especially former players) who are interested in being close to the football program . When we travel at home, we have to move roughly 140 people at a time, which requires the integration of numerous departments both on and off campus .

What are some of your responsibilities when the team is on the road?Similar to a home game in the sense that I oversee our entire travel logistics, which includes meals, hotels, buses and flights. I start planning and organizing our road trips seven months in advance to make sure we have space reserved for a travel party between 80 and 100 people .

How did you get your start in football coaching and operations? My uncle gave me a chance to be a student assistant while I worked toward my bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where I helped with coaching the receivers and was in charge of video . Upon graduating, I was fortunate enough to get on the staff at UNO as the director of football operations and have been involved with operations ever since .

What was your experience like working for the UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks? It was a great but short experience, as I was only there for four months . I was surrounded by a lot of people who have spent numerous years around the game of football, both at the college and professional level, and our head coach was a former CEO of a Fortune 1000 company . Being around these successful individuals provided me a great atmosphere to learn different ideas and opened my eyes to how things were done at other places .

Having been with the Hatters program from its start, what has been your favorite moment so far?Pregame of the inaugural Warner game was by far the best moment . The former players were back on the sideline after 56 years, our guys spent a year practicing building to that game, the student section was packed, and Stetson and the DeLand communities’ efforts over the previous two years to get the program restarted were all meeting a plateau, and it was very cool to be a small part of it .

Nolan Behrns begins his fourth year as director of football operations. Hatters Extra caught up with Behrns for a behind the scenes look at his role.

Stetson Athletics Partner Spotlight

In each edition of Hatters Extra, one of Stetson Athletics’ valued partners will be featured in the Partner Spotlight.

Jersey Mike’s Subs, a partner of Stetson Athletics since December of 2013, has been the “go-to” sub shop for many Stetson community folks since the doors opened nine months ago . “The Stetson football coaches seem to be in here almost daily,” owner Jeff Padgett said . “(Head Coach) Roger Hughes and many of the assistant coaches seem to make this place come alive when they’re here .” The partnership with Stetson Athletics has been key for the fledgling sub shop to capture the attention of the student population with promotions at basketball

and baseball games . Again this basketball season, when the Hatters score at least 70 points in a home basketball game, the next day Jersey Mike’s will offer a Buy One, Get One Free sub special to anyone showing their ticket from the game . “We had a tremendous response last season during that promotion, and with the Hatters basketball team really on the rise, we expect to exceed last year’s numbers,” Padgett said . Opening Jersey Mike’s on Mainstreet DeLand was a natural for the Padgetts, since Tracie is a graduate of DeLand High School . “We love this town and are thrilled to be a part of it,” Jeff Padgett said . “The Stetson community has been very welcoming .”

The Padgett family (L to R) Tracie, Jax (baby), Carson, Delaney and Jeff . Tracie is a graduate of DeLand High School .
