Showcase Concert Feedback We would like to get parent feedback regarding last Thursday’s Showcase Concert at the Glasshouse. Please take a couple of minutes to complete the survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/79BVK2Y We appreciate your thoughts. Congratulations to Everyone on a Very Successful Term! It has been a jam packed term of great learning, special events and success stories. This comes about through commitment, great team work and combined effort. These are qualities that are in abundance here at Hastings. I continue to be amazed by our students and their enthusiasm for learning. Thank you to all of our students and teachers for a great term. I hope that you all have a very well earned break! Guest Speaker Congratulations to Brooke Hodge-O’Brien (5H) who was invited to deliver the Acknowledgement of Country at a Department of Education’s professional learning session for school leaders last week. Brooke was praised for her confident presentation in front of a room full of executive school staff.

Brooke is pictured with Mr Graham Small, Director of Education, Port Macquarie Term 4 There are lots of exciting programs running in Term 4 so make sure you keep your eye on information coming home in the newsletter and reminders on the school’s Facebook page. I’m sure our ‘Colour Me, Hastings!’ Fun Run will undoubtedly be a huge hit with everyone, Year 4 students are excited about their Point Wolstoncroft camp in November, Year 2 have an opportunity to participate in an Intensive Swimming program and Christmas school discos are planned. Plus lots, lots more! 2019 Transition Planning Planning for 2019 is underway. Year 6 to 7 transition plans are taking place with a high level of communication and planning occurring between our teachers and Hastings Secondary College staff. The College is implementing excellent strategies to support this process and promote success for our Year 6 students.

Transition programs will also take place during next term for pre-schoolers coming to Kindergarten in 2019. These sessions are vital for both parents and children in creating special bonds and familiarity with the school. This helps to make the transition into ‘big school’ a happy and positive one. If any families are yet to complete enrolment applications, this needs to be done as soon as possible. Beecroft Public School Band I very big thankyou to the Beecroft Public School Band who entertained our K-2 children this week. We were very lucky to be included in their band tour. It is always a treat to see the great things happening in other schools. Save the Date A reminder to all parents to keep Monday, 22nd October 6:00 to 8:00pm free. Hastings Secondary College are coordinating another Safe on Social Media parent session for the Hastings Valley Community of Schools families. This is essential learning for all those wanting to keep themselves and their children protected online.

HOCKEY GALA DAY Last Wednesday students from Year 4 & Year 5 participated in a Hockey NSW gala day. The day was designed to introduce the game to interested students and hone the skills of current players. At the end of the day teams played each other in a modified hockey game. All the students had fun and enjoyed the day. The favourite activity by far was hitting the hockey ball through a moving tyre. Thank you to all the parents who helped with transport. STUDENT BANKING Our School Banking coordinators are volunteer parents (not employed by the Commonwealth Bank) and to help their weekly processing easier they ask for a couple of small requests be followed. Please ensure your child’s name, student

number, date and the correct amount being deposited is clearly written on the deposit slip. Branch details & the account number are not required. We know your child loves to complete slips but at times they are very hard to read.

As parent coordinators, they do not have access to balances. These can be found by downloading the Commonwealth Bank Student Banking app. The app also shows the tally of tokens collected.

Rewards have to be ordered in so please allow up to two weeks for orders to be delivered. We thank Jorja Thompson and her mum, Frances (mum & grandma to Alyssa and Tahlia) for giving their time to process student banking each week. ICAS ENGLISH Results for the recent ICAS English competition are back and we congratulate:- Year 2 Distinction Josie Hoffman, Addison Rolfe Year 3 Distinction Harper Rice Year 4 Distinction Isaac Lavis Year 5 High Distinction Stephanie Dun Distinction Sofia Mansfield Year 6 Distinction Amelia Cuckson, Charlie Ford, Matilda Stewart

DEBATING - PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGE “Debateinaters”, Imogen Lunn, Julian Reed, Matilda Stewart and Charlie Ford competed in the Quarter Final of the North Coast draw of the NSW Premier’s Debating Challenge at Laurieton Public School last week. At the topic selection both teams chose “That Australia should ban all beauty contests”. The flip of the coin determined the Hastings team to be the affirmative. Our team did a fantastic job of detailing clear and obvious reasons as to why the ban should come into place discussing such complicated ideas as weight loss and body image, corporate pressure, lack of information as well as personal choice. While Laurieton presented some interesting ideas about Multiculturalism and the ability to socialise, our talented team outwitted their opponents with well-structured and methodical rebuttal. The adjudicator declared the affirmative team from Hastings as the winners.

On Tuesday, the Debateinaters competed against Macksville Public School. The team from Macksville had won their zone and quarterfinal debates in convincing fashion so the team from Hastings knew they would be up against a formidable opponent in this North Coast semi-final. The topic chosen by each of the teams was “That parents should provide a pet for their children”. The coin toss saw Hastings argue the negative. Macksville started strongly that pets do provide companionship, happiness and an opportunity to exercise. Unfortunately, that’s where the success ended as the Debateinaters, in a very comprehensive, convincing and entertaining method managed to convince the adjudicator that in fact, fish don’t provide any companionship, guinea pigs do not improve the wellbeing of kids and cats will not improve exercise opportunities. Moreover, being kids they won’t look after a pet properly so that responsibility will fall to parents who do not need the additional stress or time taken out of their already very busy schedules having to provide opportunities for their children.

Once again, very intelligent, well-structured argument coupled with witty and logical rebuttal handed the team from Hastings the win. This qualifies the team for the North Coast final which will be held in the first week of term 4. and MORE DEBATING NEWS!! On Wednesday, Imogen Lunn and Matilda Stewart, who are the 1st and 3rd speakers for the Debateinaters, travelled to Sawtell Public School for the North Coast Debating trials. A day of rigorous debating was had where students had to team up with fellow debaters from across the North Coast. They were asked to communicate and collaborate with students they had never met before to form a cohesive team and perform in two debates. Couple that with a general knowledge quiz to ensure the students in our North Coast team have a sound knowledge of current affairs and the coaches had a decision to make. The NSW debating and public speaking “guru” commented that he had never experienced a field so strong from our region and that they could have made a second team who could have won the state championship in the past!

Having said that, we must be extremely proud of Imogen Lunn who was selected for the North Coast debating team. Imogen will now represent the North Coast region as they vie for the title of NSW Champions at the Primary Schools State Debating Championships in Collaroy from 4th – 7th November. Congratulations, Imogen! TELL THEM FROM ME PARENT SURVEY The school is collecting information on the opinions of the community through the Tell Them From Me online survey as part of our evaluation process. The survey is anonymous, voluntary, and easy-to-use. It is based on a comprehensive questionnaire covering parents’ perceptions of their child’s experiences at home and at school. Insights into parent and staff communication, activities and practices at home, and parent voice on the school’s support of learning and behaviour all build an accurate and timely picture that schools can use for practical improvements. To participate in the survey you can log in from home on your computer or you can come to the school to use one of the computers in the computer lab. The computer lab will be open from 1:40- 3:00pm on the 15th and 22nd October. Please check in at the office and the staff will direct you towards the computer lab.

HELP US SCARE THE CROWS AWAY!

The birds are driving us crazy!! They are eating our food, spreading rubbish from the bins and most of all, THEY’RE NOISY!!!! Luckily, 5B has come up with a solution. 5B will be holding a scarecrow making competition and they’re hoping your class will join in the fun! Entries will be accepted up until Wednesday Week 5 (14th of November).

5B will be the judges and the winning class will get to choose where they place their scarecrow. The winners will be announced on Monday, Week 6.

Each class can enter up to 3 scarecrows. You can choose if you want to be in a group or enter individually.

5B would love it if you could use recycled products so it will be environmentally friendly. 5B will come and visit your class to inspect your finished scarecrow. Your class needs to fill out a form so it will make the judging easier. This competition is NOT compulsory so don’t stress.

When you have time, go to your teacher and start to discuss your scarecrow plans. No matter what, make sure you have fun!
