Early Life FactsHarriet was born in 1820.Her parents worked as slaves.When she was 15, she tried to help a runaway slave. She was hit on the head, which put her in a coma.For the rest of her life, Harriet suffered from blackouts. http://www.incwell.com/Biographies/

Later Life FactsIn 1849, her owner died and many of the slaves were going to be sold, but Harriet escaped.One year later, she helped her sister’s family escape.She made 19 more trips to help others escape.Harriet died on March 10, 1913. She was 93 years old.

How did Harriet Tubman make a difference?

Harriet Tubman freed herself and many other people when she helped the Underground Railroad.

She encouraged others to search for their freedoms.

She still helps girls feel proud about being girls.

The Underground RailroadThe Underground Railroad wasn’t really underground – it was just kept secret.It also wasn’t really a train – it did have “stations” where people helped hide the “passengers.”

People think that she is the greatest “conductor” in the history of the Underground Railroad.She helped more than 300 people escape slavery.

Actions:She helped others even when she was harmed.She joined the Underground Railroad.

Character:She had lots of courage and wanted to help others.She was smart.

to make a difference?She had to be a strong person to fight against slavery.

She had to be a smart person to outsmart the slave owners and people who chased them.

She had to care about others to risk her own life to help theirs.

Does it matter where (or when) she was to make a difference to

me? It doesn’t matter where she was because there has been slavery in other places.It doesn’t matter where she was because many people move around and helping them could still help people I know or care about.It doesn’t matter when she was alive because we always need someone as strong, smart, and courageous as her to fight for us.
